Inside The Orange Box: Common Design Mistakes

27
FEBRUARY
2015

This week’s Inside The Orange Box is about common design mistakes that are easy to make if a professional designer is not involved in a design! Besides not looking very good, these mistakes can be costly, time-consuming, and frustrating!

Designer Sunny Holliday says, “one of the biggest mistakes I see in design gone wrong is SCALE!!! Scale is crucial to a great design!”

Designer Molly Ferguson elaborates on the same thing, saying, “I see a lot of furniture that is not the correct scale for the room, either too big or too small. This includes casegoods, upholstery, rugs, art and even accessories. Using a designer would be an easy fix to this issue. We meet with our clients and take dimensions of the space and then put it all into CAD to scale out each piece. By scaling out your pieces, the design will not only look great, but it will also give you optimal space and function!”

Common Design Mistakes addressed by SummerHouse designers // www.alwayssummerblog.com

Designer Elish Phares continues by saying, “two of the biggest mistakes I see people make actually are rugs too small, or not thinking of the bigger picture when designing. Too often, clients piecemeal their rooms without thinking about the overall design concept. Then when an item doesn’t work, they compromise the rest of the design of the space to try to make that one oddball design element make sense. Have a game plan, do it right, and take your time if you have to!”

Designer Katy Hines agrees. “Not having a plan in place before making purchases is a big mistake.  Seeking professional help and developing short-term or long-term plans for your space ahead of time will save you a lot of stress in the end.”

When scale is done properly and a design is mapped out, projects turn out beautifully!

Inside The Orange Box: Placing Pillows On A Sofa

02
JANUARY
2015

This week’s Inside The Orange Box deals with the issue of pillow placement on a sofa! There are multiple things to consider when picking out what your pillow arrangement needs to look like, so our designers give a few great pointers!

Inside The Orange Box - Design tips from SummerHouse's Interior Designers // www.alwayssummerblog.com

Interior Designer Todd Prince

On a sectional, there always need to be three pillows in the corner – one larger and two smaller. On each end of the sofa, you need a minimum of two 22” pillows on one end and a minimum of one 22” on the other end. There should be a variety of styles, as well. For a sofa, you have tons of options! You can always do a 24” and a 22” on each end, but what I really love are two pillows on one end (one larger and one slightly smaller) and a throw with one pillow on the other so it’s not so matchy matchy.

Interior Designer Sunny Holliday

It really depends on the size and cushion style of your sofa. Sometimes I like to do three lumbars across if there are three back cushions and three seat cushions. If the sofa is 85 or so inches long, and has two back cushions over two seat cushions, I will do two 22” pillows with a lumbar in between them. If the sofa comes standard with throw pillows, it’s fun to change the fabric for the throw pillows with a different fabric from the company.

Inside The Orange Box: Placing Pillows On A Sofa // www.alwayssummerblog.com

Interior Designer Katy Hines

Keep the height of your accent pillows and back cushions on the sofa within one or two inches of each other. If the back cushions are 20″ high, a 22″ pillow is a great choice.

Interior Designer Jacque Moor

Decorative pillows need to reflect the style of not only the sofa, but the room! On a long, deep sofa, I would have four pillows total. 24″ pillows at each end with 22″ pillows in front of each. This will allow the sofa to not seem overbearing in a room, and a comfortable place to lounge!

Inside The Orange Box: What I Didn’t Learn In Design School

14
NOVEMBER
2014

Happy Friday!

Today, we bring you part three in our mini Inside the Orange Box series called “What I Didn’t Learn In Design School.

There is so much about interior design that is not taught in a classroom, so our designers lend advice and encouragement to design students and aspiring designers through this column! Today, Interior Designer Sunny Holliday shares a little bit of what she wishes she’d learned in her schooling.

"What I didn't learn in design school" - a new series where SummerHouse interior designers talk about what they were never taught in their interior design classes // www.alwayssummerblog.com

Sunny says, “One thing I have learned along the way is this: When having my first initial meeting with my client, I find that the “interview” part is super important. I wish I could have worked with real clients in college to gain this experience.”

Lisa always emphasizes the importance of the interview process as well! “Finding out how your clients live is so important to being able to determine their needs in a design. Interior Design isn’t just for looks. It’s about functionality, too, and every family lives life differently!”

Inside The Orange Box: Our Favorite Graphics

31
OCTOBER
2014

Today’s Orange Box gets a little graphic! We asked our designers to pick their favorite graphic patterns to share with you guys, and we’re so in love with every single one they picked!

There are so many great graphics out there that it couldn’t have been easy to pick just one, but they all rose to the challenge! Let’s see what they selected…

>> LEAD DESIGNER LISA PALMER <<

“My favorite graphic is a wallpaper by Dedar. It is called Alhambra Quasi Nero, and it comes in 6 colors.”

Dedar – Alhambra Quasi Nero

SummerHouse Designers' Favorite Graphic Prints // www.alwayssummerblog.com

“I actually used this, in a sense, for a beautiful bathroom that my client had renovated. I took this pattern, blew it up to a larger scale, changed up the pattern slightly and stenciled it on the walls in a metallic gold and umber. It was stunning. On its own, I truly love it, but the pattern was too small and the color they offered wasn’t what I wanted. So I customized it!”

>> INTERIOR DESIGNER ELISH PHARES <<

“I am a sucker for an animal print and apparently the rest of the design world is too! They are constantly being produced in fresh and innovative ways and this graphic is a great example!”

Inside The Orange Box: Detailing A Custom Pillow

03
OCTOBER
2014

Our Inside The Orange Box topic for today is all about detailing your pillows! Pillows make such an impact, even if they aren’t the biggest, most expensive items in the room. They are of utmost importance!

Pillows are a place where designers can get a little creative with fabric and all of the fabulous trims that are available to them today!

There are so many ways to take a pillow up a few notches with simple tweaks or additions, so our designers share some of their favorite ways to do so!

“My favorite pillow detail is, hands down, a butterflied corner on a sheer flange!”

>>> DESIGNER ELISH PHARES <<<

SummerHouse interior designers on custom pillow detailing // www.alwayssummerblog.com

“There are so many ways to make one pillow go a long way. One of my favorite details is to add a sheer flange. Another under-used detail is the boxed pillow. You can also reverse the fabric application or add banding… just a subtle something extra can go a long way!”

>>> DESIGNER SUNNY HOLLIDAY <<<

“If the design is right, railroading a fabric (or running it the opposite way from how it comes off the bolt) on a lumbar pillow or long accent pillow is a nice change up. I like to do a contrasting fabric for the backs of pillows as well! And usually I order my pillow forms one inch bigger than the actual size of the pillow to make sure they’re nice and full!”

“I commissioned the late artist Lynn Green Root to do an art piece for me, and I had her custom art piece embroidered onto silk for these pillows. The client kept the original pen and ink drawing that she did and he framed it for his walls. It became a really, really special project for many reasons.”

Inside The Orange Box: Finding The Perfect Rug Size

05
SEPTEMBER
2014

Today on Inside The Orange Box, our designers dish on how to find the right rug size for your space! There are several things to consider when taking on the daunting task of picking a rug size, so our staff is here to lend their expertise!

>> DESIGNER TODD PRINCE <<

SummerHouse Interior Designers' tips on finding the perfect rug size // www.alwayssummerblog.com

“If I’m doing a room that is in isolation, my tendency is to have the rug larger and all the furniture on the rug. If I’m doing a space that is open, like a keeping area that’s open to a kitchen, my tendency is to do half of the furniture on the rug, meaning front legs on and back legs off, so the whole room doesn’t feel swallowed up by the rug. But if it’s a room all by itself, I kind of like that swallowed up feeling.”

>> DESIGNER ELISH PHARES <<

SummerHouse Interior Designers' tips on finding the perfect rug size // www.alwayssummerblog.com

“When determining rug size, my ideal is to draw out my furniture plan and then select a rug that has about 3″ clearance on all sides of the furniture. I try to avoid having pieces half on/half off if possible. Often, walkways, other furniture pieces, or architectural details limit creativity on rug sizes. Traffic patterns play a large part as well. I always recommend drawing everything out… Seeing a plan on paper makes all the difference!”

SummerHouse Interior Designers' tips on finding the perfect rug size // www.alwayssummerblog.com

>> DESIGNER LINDSEY TOWNSEND <<

SummerHouse Interior Designers' tips on finding the perfect rug size // www.alwayssummerblog.com

“If you have a beautiful antique Moroccan or Oushak rug that is not large enough for your space, you can always order a thinly woven sisal large enough and layer your antique on top!”

SummerHouse Interior Designers' tips on finding the perfect rug size // www.alwayssummerblog.com

>> DESIGNER SUNNY HOLLIDAY <<

SummerHouse Interior Designers' tips on finding the perfect rug size // www.alwayssummerblog.com

“It’s super important to get your rug size accurate. Having the wrong rug size can ruin the whole design of the room. Sketch out your room (to scale) with all of your furniture in it. From there, determine what size rug is needed by this: If it’s a main living area, make sure tables (mainly side tables) are all the way on the rug. As long as the main upholstery pieces have at least their front legs on the rug, you should be good to go! Different rules apply with differing spaces, though.”

SummerHouse Interior Designers' tips on finding the perfect rug size // www.alwayssummerblog.com

>> DESIGNER MOLLY FERGUSON <<

SummerHouse Interior Designers' tips on finding the perfect rug size // www.alwayssummerblog.com

“In a dining room, make sure your rug is 3 feet larger than the table on every side. This way when the chairs are pulled out, all four feet are still on the rug instead of two on and two off.”

While we’re on the topic of framing, here are a few quick tips to keep in mind when you’re thinking about getting a piece framed!

“Art is an investment. It needs to have a finished look. Investing a little more in a frame to get the look right for the space in which it is going is crucial!” – Designer Sunny Holliday

“You always have to frame anything that’s on paper. The only time you have the option not to frame is when you’re working with a canvas.” – Designer Lisa Palmer

“I always like to keep a balance of framed and unframed canvas pieces throughout a space.” – Designer Lindsey Townsend

Inside The Orange Box: Gallery Walls & Art Collections

08
AUGUST
2014

This week Inside the Orange Box is a quick set of tips on how to properly hang an art collection or gallery wall! These can be very tricky and difficult to make look organized, so our designers have come to the rescue! Let’s see what they have to say on the matter!

>> LEAD DESIGNER LISA PALMER <<

“Try to vary your frame styles. It is a great idea to keep the color tones of your frames the same but it makes it more interesting to change up your framing; modern to vintage, from large to thin. Also, I lay my artwork on the ground first to make sure I like the way it looks and it gives me the option of changing it around without putting holes in my wall first. Lastly, If you feel that hanging art in a collection is a daunting task, call in a professional hanger. That may be the best advice of all!”

Interior Designer tips on how to hang a gallery wall // www.summerhousestyle.com

>> DESIGNER TODD PRINCE <<

“Draw imaginary vertical and horizontal lines on the wall in a grid. When hanging, make sure the center of each piece is on a grid intersection. The frames can be any size you want, but vertically and horizontally, the middle of the picture has to be centered on a grid point. Make sure the centers of your pictures all line up. You’re not worried about frame size or where it falls on the wall– You’re simply working from center of picture to center of picture.”

Interior Designer tips on how to hang a gallery wall // www.summerhousestyle.com

>> DESIGNER SUNNY HOLLIDAY <<

“I always strive for a monochromatic color scheme when designing a gallery wall. By sticking with tones and hues in the same family, the end result will be uniform, tasteful and stylish.”

Interior Designer tips on how to hang a gallery wall // www.summerhousestyle.com

Interior Designer tips on how to hang a gallery wall // www.summerhousestyle.com

>> DESIGNER ELISH PHARES <<

“Although I do often rely on a professional hanger, I like to start with a center point. The center point may have a piece of art on it or be the center of negative space, but I still like to know what I am using as my guideline. For a collage, I like to already have the layout drawn out to work out any kinks before I start.”

Interior Designer tips on how to hang a gallery wall // www.summerhousestyle.com

>> DESIGNER LINDSEY TOWNSEND <<

” I like to start with the largest piece as my center point and work around it with smaller pieces, varying in size and shape. I keep the framing style consistent but not the exact same frame on all pieces. You can even mix in a few canvas pieces so that not every piece is a framed piece!”

Interior Designer tips on how to hang a gallery wall // www.summerhousestyle.com

>> DESIGNER KATY HINES <<

“Remember to think of your art collection as one total composition. The colors, sizes and shapes of your art and your frames should all compliment each other.”

Interior Designer tips on how to hang a gallery wall // www.summerhousestyle.com

>> DESIGNER MOLLY FERGUSON <<

“Measure your space. Once this is done, you can come up with a layout by making a template of each piece to be hung. Just trace around the outside of the frame on kraft paper, cut out the shape, and label it. Secure the templates to the wall with a reusable adhesive. Take into consideration the picture wire located on the back of art. This measurement will be for your fastener placement. Locate your studs and make sure you have the proper hardware for the job. When all else fails, call a professional!”

Inside The Orange Box: Outdoor Favorites

25
JULY
2014

Today’s Orange Box is all about outdoor favorites. There are so many beautiful lines of outdoor furniture and fabrics these days that it’s hard to know where to begin even thinking! Since a southern fall sticks around a little bit longer than fall in other parts of the country, we think now is as good a time as any to spruce up your outdoor and still have plenty of time (and great evening temperatures) to enjoy it!

Let’s see what our designers are loving as far as outdoor right now!

Always use 100% acrylic fabrics of course. They are colorfast, washable and bleachable and take the abuse our southern weather can dish out. A comfortable swivel chair is a must. Maybe several! Somehow human beings love to move, and I find that swivel chairs, expecially outdoor when we are at our most relaxed, are the perfect chair. The Lee Industries Outdoor Collection has several very comfortable upholstered swivel options and tons of 100% acrylic fabrics to choose from. Four grouped together facing each other with a great round cocktail table is functional and super fun!

I love the Brown Jordan Drift collection. Look how pretty. That’s so me! Inspired by the 1950’s… So sleek and pretty… That is so Todd!

There are so many more options for outdoor furniture now that it is becoming just as important in design as interior pieces! For a designer, that is very exciting. I love LEE outdoor for upholstered, and any clubcu concrete piece for casegoods. There’s nothing better than a great marriage between style and function!

Outdoor fabrics have come such a long way in the past few years, both in look and in feel, that we actually use them for interior design just as much as we do in our outdoor designs! Most of the time, you can’t even tell if a fabric is acrylic or not. One of my favorite lines is Link Outdoor. Great textures and patterns!

I love all of our outdoor lines for many different reasons, but currently I am loving the “Mood Daybed” by Janus et Cie. It has a very unique and updated look.  It would be amazing under a covered area near the pool.  Great place for napping!

Currently, my favorite outdoor collection is the Brown Jordan Marin collection by designer Michael Berman. This is truly a stunning collection! The threading details on the gorgeous teak frames are of a UV-resistant yacht cord. The pieces are very welcoming and cozy, and can even be used indoors!
