With Christmas and the holidays right here amongst us, we asked our staff to share some of their favorite memories and traditions tied to this time of year! We got some fabulous ideas of things to do with our families and friends and some ideas of new traditions to start!
Let’s see what some of them had to say!
INTERIOR DESIGNER ELISH PHARES MOON
“My parents started a tradition with us where every year we go do some holiday activity like caroling, see a Christmas play, or looking at lights in different neighborhoods, and then each member of the family gets to pick one new ornament as their memory from that year. It was such a fun outing and way to build character and nostalgia when decorating our tree. I’m hoping to continue the custom with my husband!”
INTERIOR DESIGNER MARY COURTNEY JOHNS
“Growing up, my parents always made a birthday cake for Jesus during Christmas. We would light candles on top of the cake, sing Happy Birthday to Him, and all blow them out together. This simple notion really put into perspective for me the reason that we celebrate Christmas. I am going to continue this tradition with my girls and, hopefully, they will find enjoyment in celebrating and honoring his birthday just as much as I have!”
ASSISTANT TO OPERATIONS DIRECTOR STACY BUNCH
“My girls and I spend an entire day baking Christmas cookies and candies. We also love to go to Canton to see the lights! And, of course, SHOP!! Oh, and, we ALWAYS have a REAL tree!!”
WEB STORE MANAGER JEN KADAR-BROWN
“Every Christmas morning, we start off by reading the story of Christ’s birth to put it all into perspective! Then my dad always puts together a scavenger hunt for our “big gift” and sends us looking all over the house with (sometimes very difficult) poem clues! Every year he asks if we are too old for this tradition, and we always say NO! He even does my Scottish husband’s now in Gaelic!!”
LEAD INTERIOR DESIGNER LISA PALMER
“We usually pick one night of Chanukah to fry latkes (traditional holiday potato pancakes) and, in the Palmer kitchen, my husband is king of the fry pan! We then light our Chanukah candles and have a dinner of yummy roast brisket and other traditional jewish foods. When my boys were young for each night of Chanukah, they would bury their heads in the sofa pillows while we rounded up their gifts for the big surprise! Later in the evening, I would then tuck them in bed with the story of the miracle of Chanukah.”
SOCIAL MEDIA DIRECTOR LAUREL DONAHOO
“When I was growing up, my family would always go to our church’s Christmas Eve service, then go straight to my grandparents’ house for a big dinner! My super creative mama would write a little skit or play for my brothers, cousins, and me to perform for everyone, which was always kinda fun! Now that I’m older and married with a little family of my own, my husband and I have started the traditions of working a Christmas puzzle every year and decorating Christmas sugar cookies together on Christmas Eve. I LOVE this time of year and say, the more traditions the better! :)”
INTERIOR DESIGNER KATY HINES SANDERS
“Most of our family lives out of town, so we usually all get together for a couple of days during Christmas. We hang out around the house, listen to Christmas music and eat things we only cook during the holidays, like sausage balls and homemade soups! We designate one night for “Dirty Santa” and another night to play fun games! We always have such a great time, and it’s something we look forward to every year! And we always have a quiet family get together on Christmas Eve when we eat dinner and exchange gifts with my parents, brother, sister-in-law and nephew!”
All such great ideas! Stay tuned for part two, coming soon!
