Sit and Spin

Sit and Spin: Our 7 favorite swivel chairs! // www.alwayssummerblog.com

We love a great swivel chair around here! Adding a swivel to a chair just makes it more fun. Plain and simple! It also makes it more functional in many circumstances! Nurseries, chat groups, keeping rooms, near fire places… The list goes on and on!

Many of the swivel chairs we have access to can also rock, and some even have returns on them, meaning if you spin it, it goes right back to the correct facing position after you get up! Here are a few of our favorite swivel chairs, ranging from more modern to more traditional! Swivel chairs can fit into almost anyone’s aesthetic!

Bedroom on a Budget

SummerHouse Interior Designer Mary Courtney Johns designing a bedroom on a budget // www.alwayssummerblog.comYou might have seen the post we did several weeks ago featuring designer Katie Carone and the living room she put together on a tighter budget! She did a beautiful job, so this time, we put designer Mary Courtney Johns to the test!

Mary Courtney has pulled together a drool-worthy bedroom that looks like it cost about three times what it actually totaled! This room is under $15,000!

Do keep in mind that this is ALL new furniture, so even if $15,000 doesn’t seem low to you, picking just a few new pieces for a certain room can really bring your existing pieces to life by only spending a fraction of this.

Our designers are experts in merging your existing furniture with perfectly selected new pieces to bring the utmost style to your space without breaking the bank!

We think Mary Courtney did a fantastic job of sourcing her specs from our more moderately priced (yet still very good quality) designer lines! Here’s her project!

Designing on a budget... A high end designer's take on a budget bedroom! // www.alwayssummerblog.com

Queen bed // $3530
Queen Coverlet // $455
Pair of Euro Shams // $130 each
Pair of faux fur accent pillows on bed // $210 each
Pair of Bedside Tables // $1370 each
Pair of Lamps // $345 each
8 x 10 Rug // $1865
Pair of Benches // $924 each
Artwork pair // $1500 each
 Room Total // $14,808
“I started this design off with a bed that would make a statement and followed with complimentary, budget friendly options that would only elevate the overall space. These selections, being that they are neutral and transitional, can easily be moved to a guest bedroom years down the road if the homeowner is wanting a change in their own bedroom. I love a portion of high contrast in interiors and used the intensity in the footstools and artwork to play up this feature. The paint color used is Benjamin Moore Intense White, which is an almost white with a tint warm gray; a wonderful backdrop for the deeper tones so they really stand out! It looks much more gray in the image above, but on a wall, it looks whiter!”

Lynn Sanders Art

Meet Artist Lynn Sanders // www.alwayssummerblog.com

We have a brand new artist here at SummerHouse whose art we are just crazy about! Our wonderful clients seem to be just as wild about it as we are because this work sure has garnered LOTS of attention!

Meet Lynn Sanders. This pretty lady sure can create some beautiful work! Get to know her just a little bit better!

Lynn Sanders Portrait2

Tell us a little about yourself! Where you’re from, about your family, etc…

I grew up in Lafayette, LA but after college, and living in various other states for work, my husband and I settled in Alexandria, Louisiana, where we have lived for the past fourteen years.  We have a sixteen year old son, two cats and two dogs.

How long have you been painting? What got you into painting?

I was always your typical creative person growing up; taking art lessons and being in charge of school dance decorations. Prior to my art career I did management and marketing/special events for shopping centers. So there was a history of creativity. Finally, about ten years ago my cousin inspired me to start painting again. She is also an artist and lives in Memphis. I began by creating paintings for children’s rooms which morphed into painting abstractly. Six years ago I quit my day job and have never looked back.

How do you describe your style? It’s so beautiful, whimsy, and unique!! We love it!

I am an abstract expressionist so my style is free flowing. I do not get bogged down in the minute details of painting, but look at the big picture. Although the pieces take a while to complete I think they all reflect my impatience. The acrylic medium and tool I paint with really are reflective of my impatient nature.  Although the pieces may take a while to complete my painting process is fast.   I would love to paint small but my process just does not lend itself to small formats.  Painting large is my real passion.

We have a great selection of your abstract pieces in our showroom. Is this your primary style, or do you have other styles/mediums you use that we don’t show here at SummerHouse?

I am always trying new processes and I feel my strokes and compositions have evolved over the past ten years.  So you never know I may have a new style on the horizon.  Lately I have incorporated linen textures to my canvases and this is something I am currently experimenting with.  In the past, I have painted koi fish and birds.  They are very specific to me and I do not paint the koi fish much anymore (painted them from 2006 – 2012).  I have done birds since 2012 when I retired the koi.  I think there are seven or eight bird paintings hanging in homes across the South. I do a couple of them a year.  It’s good to step away from the abstracts for a bit.

What is the most exciting design project you’ve ever gotten to be a part of?!

Gosh, the best part of my job is going in so many wonderful homes!!! However, my most exciting project was being asked to do Charley G’s restaurant in Lafayette. The restaurant was being remodeled and they wanted a more contemporary feel and used my art to convey that idea.  So all the artwork in the restaurant is mine.  That’s pretty cool.

What would you say inspires your work most?

My mood, music, and my love for beautiful things are the biggest influences on my paintings. Whether it is a beautiful horizon or a lovely home, those are the things that inspire me to create.  It is so humbling to see my work in the context of a beautiful room that has been artfully designed, either by the owner or interior designer. I have always had a passion for decorating so my work goes hand in hand with that.

What else do we need to know about you?!

I spent a month last summer living in an art colony on Nantucket Island. I have many funny stories from that experience.  I had a wonderful time and hope to do it again in the future.  Besides that, I love the beach, animals, tennis, novels by Jane Austen and the South!

/ / / / / / / / / /

Many thanks to Lynn for allowing us to get to know her a little bit better! Stop by the showroom or check out our online shop to see more of Lynn’s work! It’s safe to say that we’re obsessed with her beautiful colors and style! 🙂

Getting The Most For Your Money

How to achieve high design on a low budget! Advice and selections by SummerHouse Interior Designer Katie Carone // www.alwayssummerblog.com

We gave our newest designer Katie Carone the task of putting together a living room with all new furniture but on a somewhat tight budget! She’s put this entire room together for under $15,000! Now keep in mind that this is ALL new furniture, so even if $15,000 doesn’t seem low to you, picking just a few new pieces for a certain room can really bring your existing pieces to life by only spending a fraction of this.

We love the beautiful living room she’s put together using our more well-priced designer lines! Here is more information on each piece!

Art // $1140

Cowhide Rug // $540

Grace Coffee Table // $2245

Callie Lamps // $685 each

Cole Drinking Table // $1085

Albion Sofa with three contrast pillows // $2431

Franco Chairs // $1716 each

Jolene Side Table // $855

Trudy Oval Side Table // $855

8 x 10 Sedona Sisal Rug // $390

Grand total // $14,343

Katie went with one of Lisa’s favorite design M.O.s that she calls “high/low.” This is where, even if most pieces in a space are budget conscious (or “low”), splurging on a couple of items (“high”) can really elevate the level of the entire design. Katie’s splurges were the lamps and the drinking table.

“The lamps are very transitional pieces and could be used throughout the house in several different places. On console tables, on bedside tables… So many places! And I love the acrylic base. It gives it an element of high design.”

“I aboslutely drool over that drinking table. Black and gold is my obsession! I know it’s more expensive, but when you find one piece you absolutely love, you just can’t compromise. It gives the room that wow factor!”

Designer tips on making the most of your furniture purchases // www.alwayssummerblog.com

SummerHouse Interior Designer Katie Carone // www.alwayssummerblog.com
Katie Carone

“I love the idea of ordering a sofa that comes standard with contrast pillows like this one. You can order them in a different fabric and use them somewhere completely different, like on a guest bed or in some side chairs.”

“Revere Pewter is one of my absolute favorite paint colors– it would be really nice in this room. I love that you can use browns and grays with it!”

Thank you so much, Katie! We love what you’ve pulled together! If you have any more questions about these pieces, give Katie a call! 601-853-4445

Meet Anabel

Meet SummerHouse Deisgn Assistant Anabel Wilson! // www.alwayssummerblog.comWe want to introduce you to our newest design assistant, Anabel Wilson, today! This girl is awesome. Let’s get our Q&A on!

1. Tell us about yourself!

I’m originally from Jackson..Belhaven to be exact! I graduated from MSU in Interior Design, but it took a second for me to get to that point. My first year in college I went to Ole Miss and switched my major THREE TIMES because I was so not wanting to leave Ole Miss (who can blame me?): Art History, Nursing (this lasted 3 weeks into the spring semester), and Graphic Design. I finally got the courage to transfer to MSU three weeks before classes started.

My mom is an artist and she has dabbled in just about every kind of creative thing (photography, ceramic design, oil painting, and home renovation) so I think that’s where I got the design-bug. I have an older sister (Madison) and a younger brother (Henley). My mom, (Joy) has two labradoodles, who are now the apples of her eye. Their names are Lucy and Scout.

I am newly engaged and getting married in August to my very best friend, Michael Tate Webb (its a double name, aren’t we the cutest??) Michael Tate and I have one 11 year old cat named Mama Roux (Roux for short)

I am an avid supporter of brunch, all things champagne, craft beer, cats, shrimp and grits, and New Orleans.

2. Why did you go into interior design?

Easily one of the easiest and hardest questions. Why is it so hard to put such a passion into words? I have always wanted to pursue a career in Interior Design and once I got to MSU I knew I made the best choice for myself and my future. Interior Design isn’t just a career path, it is 100% a way of life, seeking out the next big design and creating successful designs that make a client feel their best.

3. What was your first impression of SummerHouse?

I have followed Summerhouse for Lord only knows how long. I think I really started paying attention when I started college, so about 5 years ago? I think one of the many things I love about SH is their mix of modern and traditional styles and how they make “good design” possible for ANYONE. It wasn’t until I started working here a few weeks ago that I not only love that, but the atmosphere and the girls make this more than just a job.

4. If you could take one piece from the showroom floor home with you today, which would it be?!

It would easily be the linen bed sheets we have on one of the beds downstairs and without a doubt the Lauren Lachance pieces. Absolutely dreamy!

Lauren Lachance Love // www.alwayssummerblog.com

5. What’s the best trip you’ve been on lately?

The best trip I’ve been on as of today would be Holmes State Park for Thanksgiving. We always stay in the cabins and fish, hike, and relax! This was also particularly special because it’s when I got engaged! I also just got done camping and kayaking, and I have a giant bruise on my leg to prove it!!

6. What band or type of music are you really into right now?

I’m going to go ahead and say it, my fiance has great taste in music so he introduces me to great music almost every week. But one artist that has my attention right now is Taj Mahal. “Leaving Trunk” and “Lovin’ In My Baby’s Eyes” are something I have to listen to at least once while I’m getting ready for work!

7. What’s your favorite social media platform and why!?

Instagram. Duh. I’m not going to say I take the most artistic pictures. A lot of them are more “in the moment” pictures, but a lot of times my brother, sister, and I communicate through the funny pictures.
Twitter comes in a hard 2nd place though, because I like to think I’m way funnier than I really am… Chrissy Tiegan is the queen of Twitter!

8. What’s your favorite design publication?

I absolutely love Architectural Digest magazine and to this day Nate Berkus and Jeremiah Brent’s pent house in NYC is life changing.

(we totally agree!)

Nate Berkus & Jeremiah Brent NYC Apartment from Architectural Digest // www.alwayssummerblog.com

9. What’s your favorite local hangout?

We love Finian’s Pub! But if it all comes down to it, we love grilling out and either our house or our friends’ houses.

10. What else do we need to know about you?

– I can quote Steel Magnolias and Dumb and Dumber
– I don’t know what my natural hair color is anymore
– My mom is one of my best friends
– I love holding babies
– I am a proud Jacksonian, even the pot holes at times… (Just kidding, I don’t like the pot holes)
– Kitchen and bathroom design make me giddy. Like I love kitchen and bathroom design.
– It is a close call between my dream car: a Volvo SUV or a 1997 Jeep Cherokee, which was my first car.

/ / / / / \ \ \ \ \

Thank you Anabel for allowing all of us to get to know you a little better! You’ve already been a killer addition to our team! 😉 XO!

Rathbuns’ Watch List Space Teaser!

Sneak Peek at Interior Designer LIsa Palmer's space for the 2016 Rathbuns' Watch List event // www.alwayssummerblog.com

As many of you know, Lisa has been selected to participate in the Rathbuns’ Watch List Event, which is part of the Atlanta Food and Wine Festival! She has been paired with chef John Lasater of Nashville’s Hattie B’s restaurant and together they are working on an incredible modern southern experience!

We asked Lisa about being paired with Chef Lasater and she emphasized the influence the South has had on both her design aesthetic and his culinary style. She is hoping that the fusion of his and her modern southern styles in two different areas of art, so to speak, “will make people feel relaxed but intrigued.”

We love the selections Lisa has made so far for their space. The colors, the one of a kind pieces… This is going to be so good! Here’s a sneak peek at the rendering and some of the design elements!

We particularly love blush when paired with shades of white or gold, which is what inspired this week’s Web Store Wish List!
