A Few Moments With Artist Carol Sneed

We recently got the opportunity to chat with local artist Carol Sneed about her work, her family, her inspirations, and how she got into art in the first place! Keep reading to find out more about this talented woman whose work we could not adore any more!

Original Oil on Canvas Art by Carol Sneed // www.alwayssummerblog.comCan you tell us a little about yourself? Where you’re from, about your family, how you like to spend a lazy weekend…

I am from Canton, MS. I met my husband, Bill, at Ole Miss, and we married after his first year of Medical School. After my graduation from The University of MS with a Bachelor of Arts degree, and later earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree at The University of Houston in design, I practiced Interior Design in Jackson, MS.

We have one daughter, Katherine, who is married to Hunter Worley, and they live in Birmingham, AL.

On a lazy weekend, believe it or not, I like to get some painting in. It is therapy- sometimes, that is! I also like to read & practice sketching. If I am in the mountains where the summer weather is cool, I like to hike or bike.

How long have you been painting, and what got you into painting?

Well, my mother’s favorite piece from the fourth grade, a crayon & watercolor, entitled “Cotton Picking” still adorns her walls. My teacher entered it in an art contest and it won first place.

Original Oil on Canvas Art by Carol Sneed // www.alwayssummerblog.comI have been designing and painting a good deal of my life. At Ole Miss, I took art electives for fun. After Ole Miss graduation, I studied painting from a local instructor for fun. My fine Arts degree included every form of art. After retiring from Interior Design, I knew I had to focus my artistic energy in some direction, and painting was a natural creative outlet. I began sketching and painting seriously in 1999.

How do you describe your style?

That is a hard question! It may not have a name. ha! My goal, however, is to take what is complex and paint it simply. When painting abstractly and experimenting with different color combinations, I try to keep the composition fresh, spontaneous, and appearing effortless.

What do you most enjoy about creating art?

I love an eclectic mix. I enjoy creating art that is very much at home with antiques as well as contemporary pieces. I am always keeping “art for interior design” in mind, and I paint the types of pieces that I searched for to place in client’s spaces.

Original Oil on Canvas Art by Carol Sneed // www.alwayssummerblog.comWhat would you say inspires you most as an artist?

I love the inspiration I receive through travel- to drink it all in. There is nothing like being there to capture the essence of the place. My city scenes and Aspen landscapes are drawn as much from memory as through photo references and sketches. Matisse, Cézanne, Bonnard, and Monet are just a few of my current influences.

I am especially fascinated by nature as a whole, the most awesome masterpiece of all, created by the only perfect artist.

What else do we need to know about you?!

Every day is a gift, and I am thankful for the opportunity to do something I enjoy- and hopefully bring pleasure to other people.

Meet Our Intern Emily Simmering

Last week you met Katie Coit, our summer intern from Mississippi State University. Today we want you to meet Emily Simmering from Mississippi College! Emily is so much fun! We hope you get the chance to meet her before her stint with us is complete!

Let’s get on to a quick Q&A with her.SummerHouse Interior Design Intern Emily Simmering

Tell us about yourself!

I’m Emily Simmering and I am from Gulf Breeze, FL which is a small town next to Pensacola Beach. I currently go to Mississippi College. I am the youngest of three with an older brother and older sister. My family and I are really close and family is everything to me. I absolutely love art, and painting with watercolor is my favorite.

What made you want to go into Interior Design?

Growing up I always loved art but never thought about interior design until my senior year of high school. That year, my mom and dad bought their dream home but it was an older home and needed to be redone. During that time I was able to see the design process and help with the finish selections and that is when I fell in love with the Interior Design process.

What place in the world have you visited that left you most inspired to design?

A place that has inspired me most in design is actually my hometown. Gulf Breeze is located in between Pensacola and Pensacola Beach, which have two completely different styles. Downtown Pensacola is influenced by the French culture with a lot of exposed brick and restored wood. I love how Gulf Breeze goes from the French influence of Pensacola to the beachy design of Pensacola Beach to everything in between. It is a good showcase of the many different design styles out there.

What Interior Design class has been your favorite and why?

It is hard to determine which class has been my favorite so far… It is between hand rendering or Interior Design Two. Hand rendering really made me think outside the box and let me use my artist background. Interior Design Two focused on residential design and I was able to see the whole process and take a project from beginning to the end. Both were really fun.

Where do you see yourself ten years from now?

I have no idea where I’ll be in ten years but I do know I want to be in residential design. I would love to work with a company like SummerHouse and eventually have my own firm. But I do know I want to be on the coast somewhere! Not positive where just yet, but I know I can’t be away from the beach for too long!

/ / / / / / / / / /

Emily, you are making us want to plan a trip to Gulf Breeze and go back to design school all at once! Thank you so much for sharing! We love having ya around 😉

Long Distance Design

This design project was done without the clients and the designer ever meeting face to face! Incredible! // alwayssummerblog.com

Designer Elish Phares Moon recently wrapped up a design project in Texas after a long distance working relationship with her clients, whom she has never before met face to face! This project is so interesting because it shows us what fabulous designers, understanding clients, great communication, and a great delivery team can accomplish! We asked Elish to share a little more about the project and how it worked because we are just so darn impressed with how it all turned out!

“In December of 2016, I had an inquiry about design services and potential work with some clients in Spring Valley, Texas. This young couple had just purchased their dream home and had budgeted for working with a designer to nail down the look they wanted in their main rooms. Focusing on the dining room, living room, and master bedroom, we discussed design direction in depth and committed to a tight timeline. Because the couple wanted to be able to move in to completely furnished rooms by their closing date, I brainstormed the initial design scheme with Lisa Palmer, SummerHouse’s owner and principal designer, to speed up the process. (I got my start at SummerHouse as her assistant before moving on to a full time designer.) She and I work well together and were able to streamline the couple’s vision into a beautiful and functional design for their young family quickly.”

The key to working with a client long-distance is transparency and communication. We put together a detailed presentation packet complete with samples and swatches that were clearly labeled. Two of my strengths are organization and communication, so I actually really enjoy working on out-of-
state projects! Our clients asked detailed questions and gave us great feedback. After a few minor changes we got everything on order and began our countdown until the install! Thanks to understanding clients dedicated to quality design, trusted vendors, an experienced delivery team, and a little patience, this project evolved into a finished design that I take pride in and that my clients enjoy!”

Beautiful job, Elish! Such a great result. We love seeing a good, challenging design project come to completion! 🙂

Q&A With April Shelby Crowell

April Shelby Crowell of A. Shelby Pottery via alwayssummerblog.com

As you might have noticed from social media and from our web store, we have a new local potter represented at SummerHouse and we are EXCITED!

Our friend April Shelby Crowell, the mastermind behind A. Shelby Pottery, was kind enough to take the time to answer a few questions for us so we could all get to know her better! Lisa and Marty fell in love with her pottery at our Lee Loves Local event (along with Traditional Home Magazine, in which she was just featured!) and it’s been true love ever since. Let’s get on with our chat with April!

April Shelby Crowell of A. Shelby Pottery via alwayssummerblog.comTell us a little about yourself, please ma’am!

I grew up in Florence, MS with my parents and older brother. I’m really fond of that small town childhood!  I’ve always had a passion for the arts and my parents have always been super supportive of that. Now I live in Flowood with my husband, Jon Richard. He is the best encourager, and his let’s-make-it-happen attitude is one of my biggest inspirations. And we’re pretty obsessed with our dog, Potter. Yes, we named him after my profession!

How long have you been creating pottery?

I took my first pottery class in the first semester of my freshman year of college (2008), and seriously I was in love with it before class even started! I continued to take pottery classes all throughout college, graduated from Miss. State University in 2013 with a BFA, emphasis in ceramics, and have been making pottery on my own ever since!

April Shelby Crowell of A. Shelby Pottery via alwayssummerblog.comWhat inspires your style? It’s so fun and different!

That’s a tough one because I’m inspired by so much.  Specifically, this Gold Collection came to life from my love for handmade, functional objects mixed with the simple, chic style I admire in interior design and home decor.  I feel like in our area when people think “pottery” they think “country” or “rustic.” While I do admire and appreciate that look, it just isn’t my personal style.  So I started to create these minimalist forms using a monotone color scheme. Even though I am my own worst critic, I really liked the pottery I was making so I just rolled with it!

April Shelby Crowell of A. Shelby Pottery via alwayssummerblog.comWhat is your favorite thing about creating pottery?

Again, so many inspirations and so many reasons why. I just love the whole process of working with my hands to make stuff. Anything, really! I just stick with clay most of the time! It’s crafty and challenging. Pottery is a long process so when products are finally complete it’s really quite satisfying!

What else do we need to know about you and your pottery?!

Recently someone told me, “I see your pottery when I walk into my living room and it just makes me so happy.” I don’t say that to sound boastful, I say it because that’s one of the many reasons I love doing what I do.  If my pottery makes someone happy then I’m happy too.  When you purchase a piece of A. Shelby Pottery you’re not just picking up any ordinary object off the shelf, you’re getting a piece of art that is very special to me because a lot of time and craftsmanship goes into each piece. I hope you enjoy my pottery just as much as I enjoy making it for you!

Thank you so much, April! Your work is inspiring and we are honored to carry it 🙂

Be sure to stop by either SummerHouse location to shop April’s work, or you can check some of it out on our web store!

We hope you’re having a great week!

Happening in Atlanta

Lisa Palmer in the Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles Southeastern Designer Showhouse

We told y’all a few weeks ago about Lisa’s involvement in the Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles Southeastern Showhouse & Gardens. Remember seeing that here? Well, the time has come for the showhouse to actually HAPPEN!

Lisa Palmer in the Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles Southeastern Designer ShowhouseWe are SO proud of Lisa and the beautiful room she has crafted for the stunning home in which this year’s showhouse takes place. Lisa created a beautiful, inspired space that we hope all of you will get to see in person!

The showhouse starts April 20 and is open Thursdays through Sundays until May 14.

Lisa told us a little about her room and what inspired her design!

“My space is on the second level of the home. It’s a study/reading room. I loved the space when I first saw it because of the fantastic natural light that the space gets! It’s not a very big space – It’s about 17 feet by 13 feet- but I had a good amount of space to work. It’s on the second level, which houses several bedrooms, and I’m right off of a gorgeous staircase.

Our inspiration for the space was springtime! I also took inspiration from the architecture of the home which had a real traditional feel, so I couldn’t go super modern. We wallpapered the space in a gorgeous Philip Jeffries ivory raffia wallcovering that has a little sheen to it. And because it was spring, my color scheme was ivory, black, and fern green. The Pantone color of the year is this particular fern green so I went with that because it reminded me of springtime!

I have some comfortable seating in there as well as some interesting pattern. I also wanted to showcase Mississippi artists. I wanted the people of the region to see how talented the artists in our area are. So I used one of the walls as a showcase for our Mississippi artists. I love how that art wall turned out!

Lisa Palmer in the Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles Southeastern Designer Showhouse

The room overall has sort of my signature look with high contrast. My drapery is an ivory linen when a beautiful quarter inch glazed black linen flange all the way around. We did this beautiful ivory armless Hickory Chair sofa in an ivory linen velvet, and I did a really cool armless chair in a Zak and Fox pattern of deep charcoal and ivory with a very gardeny pattern. Then there’s this fern green chair by Lee Industries with this really cool braid that brings in the black and ivory around the bottom.

All of this is sitting on top of this sisal and wool greek key rug by Patterson Flynn Martin. And to top it all off, I’ve got this really killer, semi modern yet earthy light fixture in a bronze and gold that came from the showroom of Paul Plus at ADAC.

So this room is bright, it’s fun, it has a little traditional spin and a little modern spin, and it’s very springy.

This showhouse is really something to see. People need to come over and tour it! Mississippi is represented in this house, so we are really excited to be a part of it.”

/ / / / / / / / / /

Be sure to keep up with all things showhouse related by following them on Instagram! We really hope you get a chance to get over to Atlanta to see all of the prettiness for yourself! The proceeds benefit the Atlanta History Center!

AND! Don’t forget that Lisa and Marty are headed to High Point Market this weekend, too, so keep up with all of their market fun by following our hashtag #SHGoesToMarket 🙂 We can’t wait to see what all they find!

Meet Maddie from SummerHouse | Oxford

We have a new face at SummerHouse | Oxford that we want to introduce to you! Meet Maddie Ertle 🙂 Maddie is a fabulously talented design assistant who fits perfectly with our Oxford team! You’ll want to stop in and say hi next time you’re in the area…

Meet Maddie Ertle at SummerHouse | Oxford Tell us a little bit about yourself!

I am 22 and from St. Louis, MO. My major is Art with emphasis in Graphic Design and I have a double minor in Art History and Italian. I went to an all girls Catholic College Preparatory high school called St. Joseph’s Academy in St. Louis and Ole Miss for undergrad -GO REBS! I am the oldest of 4, 3 girls and 1 boy and my family lives in St. Louis.

When did you realize you were interested in working in design?

I have always (from the minute I could draw) loved art and design and throughout my education have been pushed (in a good way) towards a design career. I worked for a well known designer in St. Louis from 2013-2017, learning all the ways of a registered designer and the tricks of the trade. I knew from the first day of my job with her that I will always pursue my career in design and was absolutely thrilled to be accepted as a new member of the SummerHouse team!

What is your favorite source of design inspiration?

One of my favorite designers to follow is Celerie Kemble and the Domino Design books are my favorite books.

When you have a little free time, what is your favorite way to spend it?!

When I have free time I like to be outdoors, I love to be around animals and I love to paint and draw.

What’s the best movie you’ve seen lately and why?

I haven’t seen many movies I love lately but my favorite movies are The Help and Ratatouille.

Meet Maddie Ertle at SummerHouse | Oxford What is your favorite thing about Oxford?!

My favorite thing about Oxford is how community oriented it is. Everyone who lives here loves to be here and everyone is so happy and nice.

What’s your favorite local restaurant in the Oxford area?

My favorite restaurant in Oxford is probably Boure.

Is there a certain piece on the SHOX showroom floor that you could take home with you right now if the stars were to perfectly align for ya?!

If I could take anything on the floor I would take the Vanguard King bed in Tish Ivory because it is so beautiful and elegant and looks like it is made of clouds.

In your recent years of working in the design world, what has been the most surprising thing you’ve learned about the business/industry of design?

I’m surprised by the business every day and constantly excited to see the new material presented by vendors. I’m blown away by all the amazing designs they can consistently reveal season after season. I just love the interior design field.

What else do we need to know about you?!

What else you need to know about me is I LOVE this company already and everything it has to offer. The people are incredible, so welcoming and so fun to be around, the merchandise is so beautiful and the designers are so talented. I am so blessed to be included!

THIS SATURDAY!

via Always Summer Blog Our Lee Loves Local event is THIS SATURDAY! We can hardly believe it! We are getting really, really excited. It’s going to be incredible!

Traditional Home and Lee Industries have worked hard with us to bring you a top notch celebration of local Mississippi love and craftsmanship.

The day will start at 11 with a makers market featuring these fabulous small/local businesses, artists, and creatives.  (MADCAAP, our event beneficiary, will also have a booth set up with their handmade jewelry for sale!)

We’ll have plenty to sip on, some fantastic little nibblers, and some live blues music by Scott Albert Johnson to set the Mississippi mood! And if the weather ends up as it is currently forecasted, we are in for one seriously gorgeous day!

At 1:30, our designer panel will take place! Shaun Smith, Julia Reed, and our own Lisa Palmer will discuss entertaining in the South! The moderator will be Krissa Rossbund of Traditional Home. There will be some beautiful visuals, as well as some incredible swag bags for the first thirty people to join us for the panel. If you want in on a swag bag, you do NOT want to be late! (They’ll be filled with goodies from our market vendors+ panelists + MUCH more!)

After the panel discussion, Julia will be signing her newest cookbook, Julia Reed’s South!

The market, food, drinks, and music will resume until 4 when we wind things down.

You can plan on doing a lot of your Valentine’s shopping on Saturday, so if you’re a last minute shopper, we totally have you covered! AND, if you’ve been eyeing a piece of Lee Industries furniture at all, then now is the time to get that. We’re offering 20% off, on stock AND special order, now through the 15th!

Ignite The Night: London Calling!

Ignite The Night: London Calling

So you guys have heard about our Lee Loves Local event coming up on February 11th, right?! It’s going to be incredible… We can’t tell you how excited we are about it! (More about that here!)

Well, since Lee Loves Local ends at 4, but you’ll be having so much fun that you won’t want the excitement to end… We have an idea of what you could do starting at 7!

Ignite The Night: London Calling is a big, grownups-only fundraiser event at the Mississippi Children’s Museum that is always such a highlight! This is their biggest fundraiser every year, so the people who plan it go all out. And each year the theme is different. This year, it’s all about exciting London-town! Think Spice Girls, the Underground, all things Buckingham and Royal, tea with the Queen, fish and chips, Austin Powers, Beefeaters (both people and gin) and SO much more!

Alicen Blanchard, one of our favorite people ever, is heading this event up this year, so it can’t help but be great! She has Kendall Poole, our favorite event planner, executing the details. And 4Top Catering, which we have used before at our own events, is doing the food! Killer team, if you ask us! 🙂

To assist in taking this event to the next level, our very own Lisa Palmer is going to be Amy Winehouse at the event! Yes, Amy Winehouse is back and sounding better than ever! Two of Lisa’s sons will be getting in on a set, too, so you can’t miss this!

Here’s a sampling of the fun had at past events. This year, it’ll be even better!!

Get your tickets here and secure your spot at the most exciting English event Mississippi has ever seen! It’s seriously going to be great. We are thrilled to be involved!

Find out more about the fun here. And don’t hesitate to ask us any questions! If we don’t know the answers, we can get them! 🙂

Ignite The Night: London Calling

Have a great week! As always, thanks for stopping by!
