Space Transformed

SummerHouse Interior Designer Lisa Palmer took a completely empty home and turned it into a cozy, masculine bachelor pad // www.alwayssummerblog.com

There is a brand new magazine out in Mississippi called VERVE, and one of Lisa’s projects landed on the cover of the current issue! Having one of our designers’ projects featured is always such an honor, especially when it winds up on the cover of the publication!

This space was designed by our leading lady Lisa Palmer. It was a complete and total transformation, as this client started with an entirely blank slate. “The first time I went to this client’s house, he had one rug and four or five pieces of furniture. That was it!”

Lisa took his empty house and made it a rich, cozy, masculine home. Neither Lisa nor her client could have been more pleased with the result!

Meet Jordan Carter!

Meet Jordan Carter // www.alwayssummerblog.comWe have a new face on our design team that we are so excited to introduce to y’all! Meet Jordan Carter, our newest interior design assistant! This girl is smart, organized, and super fun! So naturally, she fits right in up here 😉

We think you’ll enjoy getting to know Jordan as much as we have! Here’s our traditional Q&A with the newbie… 🙂

1. Tell us about yourself!

I feel blessed to have grown up in Daphne, Alabama, on the Eastern Shore of Mobile Bay. I loved growing up on the water and experiencing the scenic Alabama outdoors with family and friends.

I earned my degree in architecture from Auburn University (War Eagle!) and have worked in that field for five years. I recently decided to transition to interior design, and I am excited to begin this new chapter!

My husband and I moved to Jackson last year for his residency at UMMC. We have enjoyed getting acquainted with our new city and making our lovely house a home.

2. Tell us a little about how you became interested in design! Did you always know you loved design, or did you discover your interest some other way?

I have always known that I was interested in design. I remember my father and me touring houses that were under construction and I would tell him all about my design strategies. I would explain what each room would be and show him the way I would lay each room out.

3. What was your first impression of SummerHouse?

My first impression of SummerHouse was the charm. From the sweet southern women to the beautiful design of the showroom floor, I was immediately drawn to it all. To say I am excited to be working at SummerHouse is an understatement!

4. Are you an early bird or a night owl? Feel free to let us in on a snippet of your early bird or night owl routine! 🙂

I feel like I get asked this question a lot and I have decided that I am neither an early bird nor a night owl. I don’t drink coffee (Weird, I know.) so it takes me a little bit of time to wake up in mornings and I don’t like staying up too late. I am more of a middle of the day person so this job is perfect for me!

5. What is your favorite source of visual/design inspiration?

My favorite source of design inspiration is Instagram. A daily source of new, stylish designs are literally at your fingertips. The designers and brands you can follow are endless. I always find myself scrolling through Instagram when I have a minute of time to spare and bookmarking my favorite designs.

6. We’ve noticed you have great style! Where do you like to shop?

My favorite place to shop is in my mother’s closet! She has such great style and has dressed me my entire life. She has spoiled me so much that I don’t even like shopping without her. When I am in need of new clothes, Ann Taylor Loft is a go to since they have petite sizes for my 5’-2” frame.

7. If you could eat anything in the world for supper tonight, what would you eat?!

My favorite meal on earth has to be surf and turf. A filet mignon with a lobster tail on top is mouth watering good. There is nothing better than a meal from the land and sea!

Give Back To Byron

Hello, friends!

We hope all of you had a wonderful weekend! We are starting our Monday off with a bit of a heavy heart for our dear friend Byron Green. Byron, who owns and runs Classic Upholstery, experienced some misfortune last week as his shop burned completely to the ground. He lost everything. Every piece of furniture, every bolt of fabric, every nail gun. EVERYTHING. Byron has been a friend to SummerHouse for a long, long, long time and has done so much beautiful custom work for us. Not only does he do custom reupholstery, but he can build furniture pieces from scratch. And not only is he wildly talented, but he is patient with us. We as designers tend to change our minds from time to time (especially when it comes to a custom piece) and Byron has never once gotten frustrated with any of us. He just laughs, makes a note, and delivers exactly what we ask for.

And we know we aren’t the only designers who work with him. Byron is well known throughout all of Mississippi! He’s simply the best!

Give Back to Byron // alwayssummerblog.com

Bryon is truly a gem, so we want to be there for him during this tough time. We want to give back and help him rebuild his business. Will you help him, too? Please consider donating to the GoFundMe page we started for him. We can’t wait to surprise him with a big ol check! 🙂

Thanks in advance for supporting our friend. Y’all mean so much to us!

Yesterday, we talked about our friends from WithCo Cocktails joining us on Saturday for our Lee Loves Local event. Today, we’re talking about our friends from VIEW GALLERY!

Whit Geary, VIEW GALLERY owner and a dear friend to SummerHouse, has an incredible eye for unique original art, so we are thrilled that she agreed to be a part of our big LLL day with a VIEW GALLERY pop-up shop! She couldn’t bring her whole shop with her, so she’s hitting the high notes with a scaled down selection of pieces. We are dying over the gorgeousness of what she’s shown us so far! Lee Loves Local Vendor Spotlight: WithCo Cocktails

WithCo Cocktails at SummerHouse's Lee Loves Local event // www.alwayssummerblog.com

We are absolutely thrilled to have the brand WithCo Cocktails joining us THIS COMING SATURDAY (2/10) at our Lee Loves Local event in Oxford!

WithCo is an incredible, brand new Nashville-based company whose passion is for beautifully crafted cocktails and community. WithCo is an abbreviation of “With Company,” which is what their mission is: to make it easier for you to spend time with your company over a lovely drink. They don’t want you to have to fool with squeezing lemons, muddling herbs, and measuring out juices. So they’ve done all the legwork for you. They use all fresh, natural ingredients to make their three different cocktail mixes. All you have to do is add your booze of choice, add ice, and sit down with your company for a craft cocktail that took 30 seconds to make.

Not only are the cocktails delicious, but their packaging is beautiful. And, the people behind the brand are just really cool people.

Stay tuned as the week goes on for more on our other event affiliates!

We can’t wait to see you Saturday!

Q&A With Interior Designer Jenni Hilbun

We are so excited to have Interior Designer Jenni Hilbun join the SummerHouse team in our Oxford location! Jenni is so much fun, is beyond talented, and keeps us laughing! We are thankful to have her as a part of our family. We think you’ll enjoy getting to know her just as much as we have!

SummerHouse | Oxford Interior Designer Jenni Hilbun // www.alwayssummerblog.comCan you tell us a little bit about your background?

I grew up across the south – North Carolina, Georgia, and Mississippi. I spent lots of time with my grandparents in Columbia, MS learning everything from needlepoint (which eventually lead to sewing) to Canasta and of course, spoons!  I finished college at MSU with a Bachelor of Arts in Communication Theory. I fueled my creative side with all types of sewing projects and poured through books and magazines learning interior specialty sewing and loving it, often sewing into the wee hours of the morning. This love and ability has grown into a 20 year career in Interior Design.

I live on a farm in Pontotoc County with my husband, Benton, three children, three dogs, one crazy cat, two beautiful horses and five hens! Life is full and rewarding.

At what point did you realize you were interested in interior design?

Pretty early actually. One of my grandmothers always let us cousins decorate her house for Christmas and that was such a treat. She bought whatever “supplies” we wanted and we went to town with it! We even caught her piano on fire one year with a candle! Never even got in trouble, although I’m sure she was clenching her jaw!
She also fostered my love of sewing and fabrics.

If you could travel anywhere in the world for a week, where would you go?

I am really a homebody. I love being at home!

What is the best movie you’ve seen recently? Why’d you like it?

I don’t really go to movies… They’re too loud! But I have been watching The Crown and Reign and loving both. Of course the costumes and drapery details are fantastic.

What’s your favorite local restaurant and why?

I have lots of favorite restaurants because I don’t like to cook. My very favorites are the ones that get a “to go” order correct consistently! And have a pickup lane.

What is your favorite design publication?

This oscillates between Veranda and Traditional Home. Such good publications. I have difficulty parting with back issues.

If Hollywood wanted to make a movie about you, what actress would you want playing you? Why?

Reese Witherspoon because she catches my attention. She is about my size (a.k.a. “short”) and she is already Southern.

Give us the number one reason you’re excited to be a part of the SummerHouse team!

Absolutely because it is a part of a team. Also, positively: Lisa Palmer!

What is your favorite thing about being an interior designer?

My favorite thing about being a designer is helping families and clients fall in love with their home and special keepsakes all over again.

Who is your favorite character on a TV show and why?

Loreli Gilmore. I SO relate!

What else do we need to know about you?

I am part time at SummerHouse and am primarily there on Monday, Thursday, and Friday, but will always make an appointment convenient for my client.

Well Framed

Framed // www.alwayssummerblog.com

We have noticed that many of our designers have been placing exposed wood frame sofas and settees in their projects lately, which got us thinking about how much we love the versatility of this style!

Carved exposed wood adds a touch of old world charm to a space, where sleek wood adds a slightly more modern touch. Either way, we love the element that this type of seating brings into a space!  We rounded up a few of our favorite exposed wood framed pieces for your viewing pleasure. Which one is your favorite?!

All Recliners Are Not Created Equal

Recliners.

That word will divide a room in a heartbeat! Half the world hates the oversized, overstuffed picture that pops into mind, while the other half of the world lives for evenings spent laid out watching tv.

Over the past several years, furniture manufacturers have really grasped onto the concept that, in so many cases, the men need comfy recliners while the women need sleek, clean-lined furniture.  And we as designers are loving it!! In decades past, there has been very little middle ground on this matter. Either the woman sacrifices style for a big puffy recliner, or the man sacrifices comfort for a sleek, yet non-reclinable chair.

Thankfully all of that has changed. Many of our favorite manufacturers continue to introduce beautiful, comfortable recliners each market, and we love it! When the husband and the wife can be equally excited about a recliner, that makes for a happy designer who can pull together a beautiful yet functional room!

Here are six of our top recliner picks that meet all the requirements for the style seekers AND the comfort seekers.

Our Designers' Favorite Recliners // www.alwayssummerblog.com

Are these not beautiful!? These all blend beautifully into a chic room while providing the comfort and function desired of a recliner.

Shop one, four, and five on our online shop, then give us a call about the other three. Our designers can get you all the info you need! Also, keep in mind that this is just a tiny sampling of the recliners we have access to. If you’re looking for something different, we can help! Contact us here.

If you could have dinner with anyone in the whole world, who would it be and why?

If I could have dinner with anyone in the world, right now it would be with Jeff Lewis from Flipping Out on Bravo. I think he is so funny and little bit cray cray. It would be a very entertaining dinner!

What is your favorite thing about Oxford, MS?

My favorite thing about Oxford is the Square. It has a certain vibe to it that is so fun!

Mark Edge Trunk Show

Mark Edge Trunk Show at SummerHouse | Ridgeland

If you follow us on all the social channels, you probably have heard us talking about this already, but we are getting SO EXCITED about our upcoming Mark Edge trunk show at the Ridgeland shop! Mark himself will be here all day (10a – 6p) on Tuesday, October 24th with tons of jewelry (over 1,000 pieces if we heard him correctly!) PLUS he will be taking appointments for custom crafted jewelry made from your keepsakes (like coins, pocket watches, medals, etc.)  If you would like a one-on-one meeting with him to discuss creating some jewelry around your personal items, please call 601-853-4445 to schedule a time!

To make sure Mark feels extra welcome to Ridgeland, we’re hosting a cocktail reception for him on Monday night (the 23rd) at the Ridgeland shop from 5 until 7. We hope you’ll join us!

Here are some more glimpses at things he’ll be bringing with him!
