THIS SATURDAY!

via Always Summer Blog Our Lee Loves Local event is THIS SATURDAY! We can hardly believe it! We are getting really, really excited. It’s going to be incredible!

Traditional Home and Lee Industries have worked hard with us to bring you a top notch celebration of local Mississippi love and craftsmanship.

The day will start at 11 with a makers market featuring these fabulous small/local businesses, artists, and creatives.  (MADCAAP, our event beneficiary, will also have a booth set up with their handmade jewelry for sale!)

We’ll have plenty to sip on, some fantastic little nibblers, and some live blues music by Scott Albert Johnson to set the Mississippi mood! And if the weather ends up as it is currently forecasted, we are in for one seriously gorgeous day!

At 1:30, our designer panel will take place! Shaun Smith, Julia Reed, and our own Lisa Palmer will discuss entertaining in the South! The moderator will be Krissa Rossbund of Traditional Home. There will be some beautiful visuals, as well as some incredible swag bags for the first thirty people to join us for the panel. If you want in on a swag bag, you do NOT want to be late! (They’ll be filled with goodies from our market vendors+ panelists + MUCH more!)

After the panel discussion, Julia will be signing her newest cookbook, Julia Reed’s South!

The market, food, drinks, and music will resume until 4 when we wind things down.

AND, if you’ve been eyeing a piece of Lee Industries furniture at all, then now is the time to get that. We’re offering 20% off, on stock AND special order, now through the 15th!

If you’re thinking you’ll want the fun to continue into the night, why not grab a ticket to Ignite The Night: London Calling?! Lisa will be performing as Amy Winehouse, which is going to be EPIC! Her musically talented sons will also be getting in on the action!

Thank you for dropping by today!  We can’t wait to see all of you on Saturday!

Inside The Orange Box: Favorite Local & Regional Artists (Part 2)

You may remember seeing the Orange Box post about favorite regional/local artists of Elish, Lindsey, and Camille a couple of weeks ago! Today, a few more designers weigh in on whose work they’re currently loving!

DESIGNER TODD PRINCE

I have two… And they create two very different types of art!

The first is Rod Moorhead. Lately I’ve love affair with sculpture. Rod Moorhead’s are amazingly unique and you can’t take your eyes off of them. They’re so complex and unique and emit such a mood in a room. They’re beautiful! The construction is so fragile but the end result looks indescrutable. However, don’t let them fall on the floor! They’re dark and moody, yet uplifting and gorgreous all at the same time. They look like old world relics but they have a great modern twist, so they incorporate well into almost any interior.

SummerHouse Interior Designers share their favorite artists // www.alwayssummerblog.com

The other is Andrew Bucci. I’m drawn to the color and the movement in his work. It’s very active and bright and happy. I love seeing the deep collection of his work at Brown’s and I really enjoy placing them in clients’ homes.

DESIGNER KATY HINES SANDERS

I love Lauren Barksdale.  Her mix of color and the softness and subtlety of her work is beautiful.  Her pieces blend well with many different style interiors making her one of my go-to artists here at the showroom!

DESIGNER MARY COURTNEY JOHNS

Beth Winterburn from Memphis, TN is really grabbing my attention! I have a critical eye when it comes to abstract works of art and hers are my kind of abstract. I can tell there is a lot of thought behind her placement of certain elements in her pieces and I appreciate her decisions. Also, her color choices could not be better!

Inside The Orange Box: Favorite Local & Regional Artists (Part I)

For this edition of Inside The Orange Box, we asked our designers to share about their favorite local or regional artists! We got some fantastic feedback from them. See if any of their favorites happen to be your favorite as well!

DESIGNER ELISH PHARES MOON

Dick Ford is a local Mississippi artist and my current favorite. His work spans several different styles, but I am always drawn to his more “simplistic” abstracts that explore lines or figures using watercolor. I love Dick Ford’s work because it has a strong impact in groupings or standing alone and pairs well with other artist’s pieces. I often visit Brown’s Fine Art Gallery to see his newest pieces on display whenever I get a chance!

DESIGNER CAMILLE HOLLAND PARKER

My favorite local artist is Liz Nichols, her abstract art is soothing and has a touch of modern that really shines in any space! Her color palettes and texture are beautiful and intriguing!

SummerHouse Interior Designers share their favorite artists // www.alwayssummerblog.com

DESIGNER LINDSEY TOWNSEND

As of late, I have also been really interested in the abstract work of Liz Nichols! I love her color schemes and composition. Her work makes an impact on the space its in. She grew up in Jackson , MS but currently resides in Tennessee.  Her work can be seen at Browns Fine Art Gallery. I also have to agree with Elish; I have always loved Dick Ford’s work. I am so happy to say that I have a piece by each of these artists in my own home!

Meet Melissa!

08
JULY
2015

We have a beautiful new face to introduce you to today! Meet Melissa Bryant, our new receptionist! We have had a lot of rearranging going on up here lately (you know we like to keep things from getting boring!), so if you haven’t been in in a few weeks, you’ll find Melissa at the front where Danielle used to be! Danielle is taking Camille’s place as design assistant since Camille has moved up to Designer! We are so proud of our talented and versatile team!

Anyway, enough about that! Let’s get to know the new girl! 😉

Meet Melissa Bryant! // www.alwayssummerblog.com

Tell us about yourself! Where you’re from, where you went to school, what you majored in, if you have any pets… All that good stuff!

Well, I’m from Madison, MS! I graduated from The University of Southern Mississippi in 2014 and received my Bachelor of Fine Arts with emphasis in Graphic Design and I’ve been working with various businesses and private clientele with logos and websites and everything in between including drawings and paintings. At heart, I’m an illustrator through and through: I always have a sketchbook or three and a bag of pencils in my purse. (My purse is heavy.) I have two books that I’ve self-published and I’m always working on new ideas. I’m obsessed with books and publications. And speaking of obsessions, I have three cats! Max, Molly, and Caesar and I absolutely adore them. I also love antiquing, collecting odds and ends, and kayaking with my family.

What was your first impression of SummerHouse?!

PRETTY EVERYTHING. I LOVE being in SummerHouse. Walking into work everyday is refreshing. Maybe because it’s so bright and clean and I’m surrounded by beautiful things and people. Plus, it smells good. We have the best candles.

What is your favorite way to spend a weekend?

If I’m not drawing or cleaning, I’m spending my time with loved ones. If we’re not somewhere eating, we’re at a local music show, a friend’s house, the movies, or doing something else that’s fun. I lay low during the week, so on weekends I like to get outside!

How do you take your caffeine?

Dr. Pepper. Or tea. I should stick to tea. I’m not really a coffee drinker but lately I’ve been exploring the ways of a good cappuccino.

What’s your favorite holiday and why?

Christmas. I love the spirit that comes along with it. All the lights, crisp air, the music, the giving, and food. It’s romantic. So, I don’t mind premature Christmas decorating…

What’s your favorite local restaurant in the Jackson area?

Hardest question ever. It depends on the food! Pizza? Basil’s. Italian? La Finestra. Burgers? Majestic.

What is the most exciting place you’ve ever visited?

I haven’t been to many places but I reallllly loved the Memphis zoo. So many wild cats!

Best movie you’ve seen recently? Why did you like it?

Mad Max. The aesthetic is strange and beautiful and I’m in serious need of some art books from that film.

What else do we need to know about you?!

I’m kind of a quieter person but I warm up quickly (if you’re friendly) though I have a knack for handling distressed people. I love tidiness and organization, I am always early and I’m never late. If I’m late, something happened to me, haha.

/ / / / / \ \ \ \ \

Thank you SO much, Melissa! We are SO glad to have you on the team! We love your punctuality and tidiness– You keep the rest of us sane! 🙂 Welcome to the team!

Meet Danielle!

We have a new face for y’all to get familiar with around here! (And we have several position changes to tell you about, too!)

Danielle Rooney // SummerHouseDanielle Rooney // SummerHouseFirst, the new face. Meet Danielle Rooney, our new receptionist! Danielle is absolutely precious, and the most perfect addition to our fun-loving team up here at SH! Jen, our former receptionist, will now be our web store manager! She’s got a major in photography and is just really good with computers in general, so it was a natural fit. Patty, our former web store manager, is now going to be Lisa’s assistant! Having worked as a design assistant before, and because she and Lisa just gel so well, this too was a natural fit! That means Mary Courtney, Lisa’s former assistant, is now a designer! Yay for Mary Court! We know she’s going to do a killer job and we can’t wait to see all of the gorgeous projects she’ll get to work on with you guys!

Now it’s time for our traditional Q&A with the newbie!

Tell us about yourself!

I am from Madison! I split my time pretty evenly between Ole Miss and Southern. I am finishing up my degree in Public Relations at Southern, and I will be graduating in May. My dad is from Ireland, but he is currently living in Brussels, Belgium! He works for International Paper. My older brother also works for International Paper and is living in Memphis. My mom lives here in Madison, and she works for Lee Hawkins Realty. My step dad, Toby, is my world! He lives in Madison too and he works for Hemphill. He’s wonderful! He’s always treated me like his own daughter. I have an Australian Shepherd named Meeko, and I’m obsessed with her. She’s such a diva!

From where do you think your interest in interior design stems?

I realized that my interest started when I was traveling. I started re-telling my traveling stories by using details of what the place looked like, using very small details. The look and feel of whatever place I was in created the mood and memories for me. I realized that I wanted to be a part of that and help others to have memories of their own. I could learn about different people and their lifestyles. I could create an atmosphere that helps people feel happy and proud of their own space. I just really wanted to be part of that!

What’s your favorite design publication and why?

I would have to say I really love Southern Living. I really love the country/farmhouse/cottage look. It tends to show very light and airy houses with hues of light greens and blues. I love that! My dream house would be a little beach cottage on the South Carolina shore.

Where would your dream vacation be?

Hmm. I have never been to Hawaii, and I have always wanted to. I would also love to go to Greece! I think that is my next stop on my European check list.

What’s your favorite local place to eat in the metro Jackson area and why?

Definitely Babalu! Their guacamole, sangria, and tuna tacos are to die for. Not to mention, I just love the ambiance and outside patio. The best time of year to eat at Babalu is the summer when you can sit outside at night.

What TV show are you currently most obsessed with?!

It’s a little bit cheesy, but I am obsessed with The Vampire Diaries!

How do you take your caffeine?

Always and in any way possible. My favorite coffee shop is Cups! I go probably at least once a day. I either get a cappuccino, or if I’m craving something sweet, I’ll get an iced Blondie Latte with espresso ice cubes!

If you could have any one superpower, what would it be?

This is always such a hard one for me. I think I would love to fly. My favorite thing in the world is traveling, but I have such a fear of planes, even though I’ve been flying since I was 4. It would be perfect if I could fly anywhere in the world!

What’s your favorite way to spend a little free time?

Anytime I can just be outside enjoying the sunshine and running around with my dog. I also love to spend time with my best friend and her two baby boys!

What was the best part about your first day at SummerHouse?

Everyone that works here is just so sweet and welcoming! They made me feel so comfortable and like I was part of the family already. I’m excited to keep learning about design and getting to know everyone!

/ / / / /  \ \ \ \ \

Thank you for allowing us to get to know you a little better, Danielle! Looking forward to having you around! 😉

A Few Minutes With Artist Dyann Gunter

10
SEPTEMBER
2014

We recently had the pleasure of getting to visit with Dyann Gunter, a local artist and personal friend to many of us up here, about her beautiful artwork! Dyann is always so much fun to get to chat with, and this visit was no different! We found out a few more details about how she got started, how she met Lisa, and what her favorite type of music is! Keep reading for the full interview!

Original art by Dyann Gunter // SummerHouse // alwayssummerblog.com

1. How long have you been painting?

My first memory of drawing was at age 4. I drew dogs, horses, and faces my entire childhood, but I never painted until I got to college. I truly don’t remember learning how to paint then, even though I did paint. It was not until I was about 40 that I started to teach myself how to paint in oil, mostly doing portraits. I also started buying every art magazine I could, and I would read them cover to cover!

Original art by Dyann Gunter // SummerHouse // alwayssummerblog.com

2. How did you and Lisa meet and when did she start using your art in her projects?

I first met Lisa Palmer at Olde Town Middle School in the Band Hall. Our sons were both in the band, so that’s where Lisa and I became friends. We had a lot to talk about– especially music and art. Anyway, she asked one day to see some of my sketches. When I showed them to her, she liked a few of them, so she started selling them. Then she started showing me some abstracts that she loved, and I loved them too!!! She got me all fired up about abstract painting. I started trying my hand at abstract, and about a year later, I attended a painting workshop in Ocean Springs, MS with Robert Burridge. The class was called “Big and Loose,” which was just what I needed. I saw painting in a completely different light after that, and it became much more fun.

Original art by Dyann Gunter // SummerHouse // alwayssummerblog.com

3. What is your favorite subject matter?

Rather than painting a visible object, I use elements of texture and I paint colors and shapes and light to express emotion in my work. I play! I experiment, and I have fun! I get the greatest surprises that just seem to work most of the time.

4. What is your ideal creative environment when getting into paint mode? Any certain time of day? And certain type of music you like to have going?

My favorite time to paint is anytime I can! Music is a must, and most any kind will do, but music from the 70’s is my favorite!

Original art by Dyann Gunter // SummerHouse // alwayssummerblog.com

5.  Where do you get most of your inspiration?

I get most of my inspiration from Lisa and the designers at SummerHouse. I’m also very inspired by other artists from Mississippi.

6. What else do we need to know about you?

Lisa introduced me to JohnRichard, a wonderful company out of Greenwood, who I have painted for for about 5 years now. It has been a life changing experience and has enabled me to become a full time painter (as of this October!) I owe so much to Lisa and all of the wonderful designers there. I love for them to call me and say, “Hey, can you come by and help me figure out what kind of painting I need!?” Summerhouse has been a huge blessing to me in my life. HUGE!!!
