Inside The Orange Box: Favorite White and Light Neutral Paint Colors

Inside The Orange Box this week, we’re talking about paint colors! Choosing a paint color seems to give most people more anxiety than almost anything when it comes to interior design! Our designers weigh in on their favorite white and neutral paint colors to hopefully help reduce the stress commonly associated with the topic!

SummerHouse Designers' favorite white and neutral paint colors // www.alwayssummerblog.com

DESIGNER LISA PALMER

“My go to white is Benjamin Moore Linen White. SummerHouse is painted Linen White and our customers always ask what the wall color is. It is an ivory with not too much yellow in it. It is fresh and light and simply beautiful.”

DESIGNER TODD PRINCE

“My favorite “go to” white is Ben Moore White Dove.  It’s crisp and clean and has no weird undertone.”

DESIGNER ELISH PHARES MOON

“My go to neutral paint colors are Moonlight White or Dune White, both by Benjamin Moore. They almost universally compliment and are the perfect backdrop for any design.”

Inside The Orange Box: How To Make A Bed, Part 2

21
AUGUST
2015

We gave you part one last week, so today we give you part two of this Orange Box topic: Our designers’ favorite ways to make a bed!

DESIGNER TODD PRINCE

“I think bedding should be super practical. You have to be able to clean it! I love a coverlet with a duvet folded at the foot of the bed. That allows your bedding to be changed out with the seasons, since we need to be able to do that here in the South! On a king bed, I love doing two king size pillows against the headboard with 3 euroshams in front. I’m all about practicality, texture, and color. I love a pretty and functional bed!”

SummerHouse Designers' Favorite Ways to Make A Bed // www.alwayssummerblog.com

DESIGNER CAMILLE HOLLAND

“My favorite way to make a bed usually starts with crisp white bedding and a white coverlet, while using a neutral soft patterned fabric for euros or accent pillows! Simple and classic!”

SummerHouse Designers' Favorite Ways to Make A Bed // www.alwayssummerblog.com

DESIGNER LINDSEY TOWNSEND

“I like to keep an overall clean and simplistic look, definitely not too over done.  I love accent fabrics, so if I use a really bold pattern fabric as a large lumbar across the front, I will use fairly simple euro shams behind the lumbar to balance it out. I tend to use euro shams most often because I like the height they give (unless the headboard is very low, then I will use standard shams.) Also, I like always having something at the foot of the bed. It can be a folded duvet, throw, or bed scarf. Layers of texture and soft pattern can help create a most inviting environment!”

SummerHouse Designers' Favorite Ways to Make A Bed // www.alwayssummerblog.com

SummerHouse Designers' Favorite Ways to Make A Bed // www.alwayssummerblog.com

DESIGNER KATY HINES

“I always start with whites for the basics like coverlets, sheets, etc. It’s fresh, crisp, and relaxing. Then I layer color and texture in the accent pillows and throws to tie in with the paint, art, and accessories.”

Inside The Orange Box: Nontraditional Neutrals, Part 2

31
JULY
2015

You might remember seeing from our last Orange Box post about nontraditional neutrals! Today, more of our designers are getting in on the discussion! Let’s see what they have to say!

DESIGNER LINDSEY TOWNSEND

One of my favorite non-traditional neutrals is dark slate blue-greys. I love how it can really ground a space while also balancing well with many other color schemes.  It can be used within a traditional design palette or contemporary.  It is a very versatile non-traditional neutral!

SummerHouse designers' favorite nontraditional neutrals // www.alwayssummerblog.com

SummerHouse designers' favorite nontraditional neutrals // www.alwayssummerblog.com

DESIGNER CAMILLE HOLLAND

My favorite non-traditional neutral is black, it is usually thought of as an accent to white or grey neutrals, but it is amazing standing on its own as the main color in a space! It pairs great with all colors and can make any room stand out as a show stopper or can tone down a space for subtle elegance!

DESIGNER KATY HINES

I have really been drawn to blush tones lately!  When paired with creams and ivory, it creates a soft, sophisticated palette.  And it is a beautiful accent to darker neutrals like charcoal and taupe.  Here are a few blush accents you can find in our showroom now!

Designer of the Week: Lindsey Townsend

24
JULY
2015

We’re excited to have Lindsey Townsend as our designer of the week! We had a great chat with her about a fun project she’s working on, where she finds her best inspiration, and more!

Designer of the Week: Lindsey Townsend // www.alwayssummerblog.com

1. As a designer, what has most been grabbing your attention lately? A certain color, type of pattern, decor style…?

I love mixing antique pieces with contemporary. I like how collected it can make a home feel. I have also been drawn to anything antique brass, hammered metal, stone table tops, organic patterns, and small touches of acrylic. I have been very inspired lately by emerald greens and deep blue grays.

Designer of the Week: Lindsey Townsend // www.alwayssummerblog.com

2. Tell us about your favorite project you’ve worked on as a SummerHouse designer. What was it that you loved about that project?

I have to say there are many projects and clients I have truly loved working with here at Summerhouse. My favorite project at the moment is a new construction project I am working on. It is on the water in Lost Rabbit. The clients and I have been working together on everything from the ground up. A unique feature of this home is that it has a twenty-two foot Nanawall. This wall will have the capability of opening completely, so that the great room can lead right onto the covered balcony. My clients like to spend a lot of there time outside, so there will be 4 beautiful outdoor areas for them to spend their time lounging and entertaining. The style of this home is a beautiful mix of timeless and contemporary. I can’t wait to see this project completed and installed at the end of the year!

Designer of the Week: Lindsey Townsend // www.alwayssummerblog.com

3. What inspires you most as a designer?

I can find inspiration in anything most times. It can come from a certain fabric, a rug, wall covering, or even a light fixture. But art may inspire me most. A beautiful piece of art can really become an integral part of my entire design scheme. I also draw a lot of inspiration from what other designers around the country are doing, from such publications as Atlanta Homes and Elle Decor.

Designer of the Week: Lindsey Townsend // www.alwayssummerblog.com
4. We’re getting excited about your new home! What project to you plan to tackle first when you get into your new house? Give us a teaser of a future project that you’ll eventually get to if you can!!

Well we are buying a 31 year old home, so having said that… it has amazing character and potential. It just needs a little TLC first! We first plan to update all paint, lighting, and freshen up the landscaping. After that we plan to completely remodel the kitchen and all bathrooms! Finally, once we make it through all that, I plan to redesign our master bedroom. We are very excited to get started.

Inside The Orange Box: The Right Light

05
DECEMBER
2014

Inside The Orange Box this week, we talk about getting the right light! Three designers share their secrets of perfecting the ambient lighting in whatever room they are designing… So let’s see what they have to say!

Interior Designer Elish Phares
I don’t have a hard and fast rule when choosing lighting for a space. Unless you are starting from scratch, each room comes with it’s own deciding factors: ceiling height, paint colors, natural light, size, etc. I love a pair of matching lamps in a room, but I usually avoid more than one pair. If I need another matching pair I usually start varying height. For example, a pair of table lamps and a pair of floor lamps look great together but aren’t too repetitive. A beautiful ceiling fixture can go a long way, but I like it to be a focal point and not fight with the rest of the room. If there is already a lot going on, I may think twice about adding a large hanging fixture. Lastly, remember who you are designing for! How do they use the space? What are they drawn to? The room should always be a reflection of those living in it.
SummerHouse Designers share tips on getting the right light // www.alwayssummerblog.com
SummerHouse Designers share tips on getting the right light // www.alwayssummerblog.com
Interior Designer Lindsey Townsend
When designing lighting for a space, I always take into consideration how the space is going to be used, the amount of natural light, the paint color, the ceiling height, and the size of the room. When starting from scratch, I like to have evenly dispersed can lighting along with a ceiling fixture in the center of the room.  In most cases I will select a decorative ceiling fixture, but not in all cases, because again, it depends on the function, size, furniture, and overall design style of the room.
If the space already has many interesting design aspects then I will select a very simple light fixture, but in other spaces I do the opposite! I will select a light fixture to be the focal point and the rest of the space is designed to compliment it, not compete!  I always put separate dimmers on the light fixture and the can lighting when possible.  Dimmers are always nice to have when entertaining!
SummerHouse Designers share tips on getting the right light // www.alwayssummerblog.com
Interior Designer Molly Ferguson
You should have a mix of light sources at all different levels to create a flattering ambiance. You also need appropriate task lighting for whatever you do in that space. I try to stay away from fluorescent lights if at all possible. In some instances, fluorescent lights will accent blue tones and make reds look colder, and they often are very harsh. Incandescent lighting gives off a warmer, more flattering glow. The most ideal light source is natural light. I believe if the sun is up, your drapery should be open!
Every house is so different, so there are many factors to take into consideration when selecting lighting for a space. It’s always good to hire a professional for guidance in tricky areas such as lighting!

Inside The Orange Box: Finding The Perfect Rug Size

05
SEPTEMBER
2014

Today on Inside The Orange Box, our designers dish on how to find the right rug size for your space! There are several things to consider when taking on the daunting task of picking a rug size, so our staff is here to lend their expertise!

>> DESIGNER TODD PRINCE <<

SummerHouse Interior Designers' tips on finding the perfect rug size // www.alwayssummerblog.com

“If I’m doing a room that is in isolation, my tendency is to have the rug larger and all the furniture on the rug. If I’m doing a space that is open, like a keeping area that’s open to a kitchen, my tendency is to do half of the furniture on the rug, meaning front legs on and back legs off, so the whole room doesn’t feel swallowed up by the rug. But if it’s a room all by itself, I kind of like that swallowed up feeling.”

>> DESIGNER ELISH PHARES <<

SummerHouse Interior Designers' tips on finding the perfect rug size // www.alwayssummerblog.com

“When determining rug size, my ideal is to draw out my furniture plan and then select a rug that has about 3″ clearance on all sides of the furniture. I try to avoid having pieces half on/half off if possible. Often, walkways, other furniture pieces, or architectural details limit creativity on rug sizes. Traffic patterns play a large part as well. I always recommend drawing everything out… Seeing a plan on paper makes all the difference!”

SummerHouse Interior Designers' tips on finding the perfect rug size // www.alwayssummerblog.com

>> DESIGNER LINDSEY TOWNSEND <<

SummerHouse Interior Designers' tips on finding the perfect rug size // www.alwayssummerblog.com

“If you have a beautiful antique Moroccan or Oushak rug that is not large enough for your space, you can always order a thinly woven sisal large enough and layer your antique on top!”

SummerHouse Interior Designers' tips on finding the perfect rug size // www.alwayssummerblog.com

>> DESIGNER SUNNY HOLLIDAY <<

SummerHouse Interior Designers' tips on finding the perfect rug size // www.alwayssummerblog.com

“It’s super important to get your rug size accurate. Having the wrong rug size can ruin the whole design of the room. Sketch out your room (to scale) with all of your furniture in it. From there, determine what size rug is needed by this: If it’s a main living area, make sure tables (mainly side tables) are all the way on the rug. As long as the main upholstery pieces have at least their front legs on the rug, you should be good to go! Different rules apply with differing spaces, though.”

SummerHouse Interior Designers' tips on finding the perfect rug size // www.alwayssummerblog.com

>> DESIGNER MOLLY FERGUSON <<

SummerHouse Interior Designers' tips on finding the perfect rug size // www.alwayssummerblog.com

“In a dining room, make sure your rug is 3 feet larger than the table on every side. This way when the chairs are pulled out, all four feet are still on the rug instead of two on and two off.”

While we’re on the topic of framing, here are a few quick tips to keep in mind when you’re thinking about getting a piece framed!

“Art is an investment. It needs to have a finished look. Investing a little more in a frame to get the look right for the space in which it is going is crucial!” – Designer Sunny Holliday

“You always have to frame anything that’s on paper. The only time you have the option not to frame is when you’re working with a canvas.” – Designer Lisa Palmer

“I always like to keep a balance of framed and unframed canvas pieces throughout a space.” – Designer Lindsey Townsend

Pretty Presentation

20
AUGUST
2014

Designer Lindsey Townsend has been working extra hard to get her project load organized before she goes on maternity leave at the end of this week. We are SO excited for her!

Last week, she gave a beautiful presentation that her clients absolutely loved, so we got her to tell us a little bit about it! This project is for a cabin being built in Port Gibson, MS, and construction is expected to be completed around Thanksgiving!

Project Presentation by SummerHouse Interior Designer Lindsey Townsend // www.alwayssummerblog.com

“We approached this project with a rustic modern idea in mind. Almost a little mid-century modern, actually. They gave me a set of inspiration images, and one of the images was one I had pinned in a cabin file for them on Pinterest, so we were already sort of on the same page. But I basically just went by those images for my inspiration and it ended up being exactly what they wanted!”

Project Presentation by SummerHouse Interior Designer Lindsey Townsend // www.alwayssummerblog.com

Project Presentation by SummerHouse Interior Designer Lindsey Townsend // www.alwayssummerblog.com

“They wanted lots of mixtures of materials. We did a mohair sectional, a concrete coffee table, leather chairs with linen pillows, sheer drapery… So there is a lot of interest. There isn’t a lot of furniture in the house, so each piece is very unique on its own. Nothing ordinary! They also wanted all of their light fixtures to be focal points so those are all very different as well.”

Project Presentation by SummerHouse Interior Designer Lindsey Townsend // www.alwayssummerblog.com

“This couple was really easy to work with.  They came in a while ago and bought a sofa for their house off the showroom floor and when they were in, they mentioned that they were building this cabin. I mentioned that we do the style that they were looking for really well so they just called me when they were ready. We only met twice before their first order! We have almost everything on order, but we still have a few things we need to add.”

“They loved everything!”

We think you did a great job, Lindsey! Can’t wait to see how the completed project turns out!

Inside The Orange Box: Gallery Walls & Art Collections

08
AUGUST
2014

This week Inside the Orange Box is a quick set of tips on how to properly hang an art collection or gallery wall! These can be very tricky and difficult to make look organized, so our designers have come to the rescue! Let’s see what they have to say on the matter!

“Try to vary your frame styles. It is a great idea to keep the color tones of your frames the same but it makes it more interesting to change up your framing; modern to vintage, from large to thin. Also, I lay my artwork on the ground first to make sure I like the way it looks and it gives me the option of changing it around without putting holes in my wall first. Lastly, If you feel that hanging art in a collection is a daunting task, call in a professional hanger. That may be the best advice of all!”

“Draw imaginary vertical and horizontal lines on the wall in a grid. When hanging, make sure the center of each piece is on a grid intersection. The frames can be any size you want, but vertically and horizontally, the middle of the picture has to be centered on a grid point. Make sure the centers of your pictures all line up. You’re not worried about frame size or where it falls on the wall– You’re simply working from center of picture to center of picture.”

“I always strive for a monochromatic color scheme when designing a gallery wall. By sticking with tones and hues in the same family, the end result will be uniform, tasteful and stylish.”

“Although I do often rely on a professional hanger, I like to start with a center point. The center point may have a piece of art on it or be the center of negative space, but I still like to know what I am using as my guideline. For a collage, I like to already have the layout drawn out to work out any kinks before I start.”

” I like to start with the largest piece as my center point and work around it with smaller pieces, varying in size and shape. I keep the framing style consistent but not the exact same frame on all pieces. You can even mix in a few canvas pieces so that not every piece is a framed piece!”

“Remember to think of your art collection as one total composition. The colors, sizes and shapes of your art and your frames should all compliment each other.”

“Measure your space. Once this is done, you can come up with a layout by making a template of each piece to be hung. Just trace around the outside of the frame on kraft paper, cut out the shape, and label it. Secure the templates to the wall with a reusable adhesive. Take into consideration the picture wire located on the back of art. This measurement will be for your fastener placement. Locate your studs and make sure you have the proper hardware for the job. When all else fails, call a professional!”
