Christmas at the Cabin

Have you picked up the latest issue of Social South Magazine? The most beautiful cabin designed by SummerHouse Interior Designer Lindsey Townsend was featured in all of its Christmas glory and it could not be more stunning!! We love the simplicity and charm. Lindsey worked with the homeowners in the beginning stages of construction, and completed the project not only with furniture, soft goods, and accessories, but with Christmas decorations so their home would be holiday party ready!

White on White

We absolutely love all white spaces. White on white is crisp, neutral, both modern AND traditional, and simply soothing. All white spaces start with all white walls and trim, so we hit up our design staff for their favorite white + white combos. We love what they’ve picked!

The SummerHouse designers weigh in on their favorite white on white paint color combinations! // www.alwayssummerblog.com

Design Assistant Anabel Webb prefers the Benjamin Moore combo Decorator’s White with Simply White on the trim. Design Assistant Camille Holland Parker likes White Dove on White Dove! Design Assistant Krystle Short’s pick is Ben Moore’s Navajo White on the walls with Farrow & Ball James White on the trim. Designer Katy Sanders likes all Ben Moore Ivory White on both walls AND trim! Lindsey Townsend loves Ben Moore Moonlight White with Simply White on the trim. Katy Carone’s pick is Ben Moore Glacier White on the wall with White Dove on the trim.

Designer Elish Phares Moon likes the monochromatic Ben Moore Moonlight White on both walls and trim and tells us why it’s so beautiful!

“One color? For the walls AND trim? It may sound too good to be true, but in this case, less is more. Although it’s a little too much restraint for some personalities, an all white house is incredibly inviting. It took me a while to get on board. I thought “all white? and stifle my creativity? Leave a huge canvas… blank? NEVER! ” I first tried this combo with a client in Oxford… when I finally saw the finished product it was love at first sight. I loved it so much I did it in my own home- and I fall a little more in love with it each day.”

Great picks, designers. Do YOU have a favorite white on white combo? Tell us in the comments below!

Designer of the Week: Lindsey Townsend

SummerHouse Interior Designer of the Week Lindsey Townsend Our current Designer of the Week is Lindsey Townsend! This talented, beautiful, hard-working chick keeps us constantly inspired with her amazing projects! We love being able to work alongside Lindsey! Get to know her a little better as a designer in this Q&A!

1 – Tell us about a few of your favorite details in a project you’re currently working on!

I am very excited to be working on a new construction project with a renowned architect. The home is just in its beginning phase and will take about 18 months from start to finish to complete. The architecture and landscape plan is absolutely beautiful. I can’t wait to add my touches to the interior design. The style of the home is French Caribbean. It will be flooded with natural light, beautiful antique beams, oak floors, Limestone fireplaces and oyster Firerock concrete pavers throughout the exterior. I plan to devote much detail and attention to everything in the interior from the cabinetry, ceilings, doors styles, hardware, stone selections, lighting, and color palette throughout.

2 – Is there a publication, book, blog, website, magazine that has just really inspired you lately? Tell us about it!

I have really been inspired lately by Luxe Interiors + Design Magazine. Luxe has a strong focus on the architecture of a home and how it relates to the interior. Which I feel is so important. The interior design of a home should flow seamlessly with the architecture and surroundings of the space. I am in the middle of a few projects I have been working on from the ground up. Luxe has been very helpful with inspiration for new flooring designs and door and cabinetry details, along with wood stains and ceiling details.

SummerHouse Interior Designer of the Week Lindsey Townsend

3 – What’s your favorite room in a home to design? Why?

My favorite space to design in a home would be the Living Room. It is where most of your time is spent with family and entertaining friends. It usually sets the tone for the design of the rest of the home. It is most often the largest space, so I can be creative with furniture layouts, mixing of pieces, layering of textures and color palettes.

4 – Tell us about your favorite project to date and what you love about that particular project!

I am very proud of a new construction home I completed earlier this year. I spent over 2 years on the project. The architect and builder on the project were great. We all worked very well together. It is absolutely imperative to have a good team behind you, that works well together when completing a project of this scope. The home is on the water at Lost Rabbit. The architecture itself was very inspiring. To list just a few features… It is flooded with natural light, beautiful stone and tile selections, unique lighting, an art collection that is to die for, and a 22′ glass Nano Wall that completely opens up to the main level balcony. The clients were absolutely amazing and really committed to my design plan for the entire house. It turned out beautifully and was recently photographed. Should be up on our website very soon!

What Sets SummerHouse Apart?

What is SummerHouse?

SummerHouse is a beautiful place that acquired its name after owner Lisa Palmer spent a week vacationing in Florida’s renown 30A several years back. The vibes she got while on that sunny stretch of heaven on earth were the vibes she wanted to deliver to the clients of her growing interior design business. She loved the way their rental house for that summer week made her feel.

SummerHouse 🙂

Fast forward several years and not only is SummerHouse a business where Lisa Palmer makes clients happy, or a showroom that inspires its visitors with its unique mix of modern, classic, funky, and soft. It’s also a design family. SummerHouse has grown to employ seven interior designers, and that is what makes us unique! We are not just a store. We’re not just a design group. We are a design HOUSE! We sell directly off the floor. Our design services are free to those who purchase from us. Our designers are all trained designers with degrees in their field!

Inside The Orange Box: Our Favorite Grays

When it comes to paint colors, one of the safest shades you can pick is a beautiful gray. The right gray goes with almost everything! It’s also a great coordinating color to pair with whites, other neutrals, and even some bolder colors! But grays can be tricky, so you’ll want to consult a professional first if you’re even the least bit unsure of your pick!

Our designers and design staff weigh in on their personal favorite gray paint colors! Let’s see what they picked!

The best paint colors with gray undertones // www.alwayssummerblog.com

INTERIOR DESIGNER LISA PALMER’S PICKS:

“My favorite gray paint color is Sherwin Williams Agreeable Gray. I have used it on floors and walls when I need a light warm gray. It is sort of a creamy gray and pairs well with a soft white such as Ben Moore White Dove.”

“My favorite dark gray paint color is Benjamin Moore Iron Mountain. When I need a jolt of rich smokey gray, I turn to this one. It is dark, so be prepared for a moody space.”

Inside The Orange Box: Favorite Local & Regional Artists (Part I)

For this edition of Inside The Orange Box, we asked our designers to share about their favorite local or regional artists! We got some fantastic feedback from them. See if any of their favorites happen to be your favorite as well!

DESIGNER ELISH PHARES MOON

Dick Ford is a local Mississippi artist and my current favorite. His work spans several different styles, but I am always drawn to his more “simplistic” abstracts that explore lines or figures using watercolor. I love Dick Ford’s work because it has a strong impact in groupings or standing alone and pairs well with other artist’s pieces. I often visit Brown’s Fine Art Gallery to see his newest pieces on display whenever I get a chance!

DESIGNER CAMILLE HOLLAND PARKER

My favorite local artist is Liz Nichols, her abstract art is soothing and has a touch of modern that really shines in any space! Her color palettes and texture are beautiful and intriguing!

DESIGNER LINDSEY TOWNSEND

As of late, I have also been really interested in the abstract work of Liz Nichols! I love her color schemes and composition. Her work makes an impact on the space its in. She grew up in Jackson , MS but currently resides in Tennessee.  Her work can be seen at Browns Fine Art Gallery. I also have to agree with Elish; I have always loved Dick Ford’s work. I am so happy to say that I have a piece by each of these artists in my own home!

Inside The Orange Box: Favorite Celebrity Designers, Part 2

A couple of weeks ago, we shared some of our designers’ favorite celebrity designers! If you missed that post, you can get to it here!

Today, a few more designers give their input on which celeb designers they love and why! Let’s see what they have to say!

Interior Designer Todd Prince

I like Thomas O’Brien. His Aero book is one of my favorites. I love how his designs look very “found” and never overly decorated. He is great at mixing old and new and brining in a little bit of eclectic. I think his work is great.

Interior Designer Lindsey Townsend

The interior design community is full of a wealth of talented designers and architects.  I follow the work of so many!  Some of my favorite designers to draw inspiration from are McAlpine Booth & Ferrier Interiors, Beth Webb, Darryl Carter, Melanie Turner, and the always amazing Suzanne Kasler.

Inspiring Celebrity Designers: Melanie Turner // www.alwayssummerblog.com

Inspiring Celebrity Designers: Beth Webb // www.alwayssummerblog.com

Interior Designer Elish Phares Moon

I truly don’t have a favorite designer. To me, the mark of a great designer is one who evolves with their clients, therefore they may not have an easily detectable signature style. Still, there is always that common thread in design that is well-executed that is magnetic. Some designers that I seem to always be drawn to aspects of their projects are Jessica Helgerson, McAlpine Booth & Ferrier Interiors, & almost any designer based out of Atlanta – the talent packed into that city is incredible! Oh and Aerin Lauder’s product design is unparalleled…she can do no wrong.

The SummerHouse Family’s Holiday Traditions, Part 2

Earlier this week we shared a few of our staffs’ favorite holiday traditions/memories! Now it’s time for the rest of them! 🙂

The SummerHouse family's holiday traditions and favorite memories // www.alwayssummerblog.com

RECEPTIONIST / DESIGN ASSISTANT DANIELLE ROONEY

I have different traditions with each of my parents. With my mom, we always make hot chocolate and drive around different Madison neighborhoods looking at lights and listening to Christmas music.

We tend to celebrate typical Irish Christmas traditions on my dad’s side since he is from Belfast. My dad usually brings over holiday “poppers” and candy from Ireland. Around 6 years ago, I created a “Rooney Christmas Book” full of Christmas stories and songs and had dad bring it to my Granny and Granda for Christmas. Ever since then, my family gathers around and reads it together. It’s kinda like a representation of us being present with the rest of the family since we are so far apart during the holidays!

( photo cred )

INTERIOR DESIGNER CAMILLE HOLLAND PARKER

Every year, the week of Christmas, all the women on my mom’s side (we are at 10 now) get together and spend a whole day (sunrise till well into the night) making candies, cookies, and treats like home made chex mix and trail mixes, fudge, and popcorn balls! It is always fun and gets everyone in the family spirit for the holidays!

INTERIOR DESIGNER LINDSEY TOWNSEND

As a child I have memories of our season starting with us all going to pick out the Christmas tree and coming back to decorate together.  I have already continued this tradition in my family: we all went together to find a tree the Sunday after Thanksgiving! And we always ride around on Christmas Eve to see the Christmas lights!

(photo cred)

INTERIOR DESIGNER KATHERINE SHELTON

As a child my Christmas memories are of my family going to pick out our real tree and coming home to decorate it.  My dad always made wassail and it was so much fun pulling out the ornaments to trim the tree.  Mom and I finished by decorating every room of the house with Santas, nutcrackers, and snowmen.  We also always had a Nativity that I helped put out on the coffee table.  Now that I have my own family we also all decorate the tree together. My boys love to help me put ornaments on our tree and figure out where to put all of the Santas!

INTERIOR DESIGN ASSISTANT MARGUERITE JOHNSON

One year my family somehow ended up getting three christmas trees and ever since then we have to have 3 threes! Also, we love the Elf on the Shelf.  We always try and see which family member can come up with the most creative thing for the elf to do!

You can get to Part 1 here in case you missed it!

Inside The Orange Box: Home Bars We Adore

30
OCTOBER
2015

With this time of year ringing in the most festive of seasons, we thought we’d celebrate by sharing some of our designers’ favorite home bar photos! They were asked to submit photos of bars that inspired them and to tell why. We love what they picked!

INTERIOR DESIGNER ELISH PHARES MOON

The bar setup below just makes me so happy! It is fresh, cheerful, and looks like it actually gets used. The clean brass design mixed with the greenery and fresh produce is spot on. Can we say brunch cocktail?

SummerHouse designers' favorite home bars // www.alwayssummerblog.com

INTERIOR DESIGNER CAMILLE HOLLAND PARKER

I love this bar cart because it is ideal for a smaller space or for someone who doesn’t always need a bar accessible. The accessories are clean and do not clutter the bar, giving the essentials plenty of room to shine!

SummerHouse designers' favorite home bars // www.alwayssummerblog.com

INTERIOR DESIGNER TODD PRINCE

I love the bar cart we have in our own home! We use it every night. It’s acrylic, so it’s really cool without having too much visual weight. And who doesn’t love enjoying a cocktail prepared at such a fun “work station?!”

SummerHouse designers' favorite home bars // www.alwayssummerblog.com

INTERIOR DESIGNER LINDSEY TOWNSEND

I love how this beautiful sideboard has been transformed into a functional bar, just by simply topping it with a tray.  This can be done with any console table, buffet, or credenza. Place your bottles, decanters, and a few glasses on the tray.  Store the rest of the essentials inside the piece of furniture.

SummerHouse designers' favorite home bars // www.alwayssummerblog.com

INTERIOR DESIGNER MARY COURTNEY JOHNS

Being that I like my surroundings to be visually clean, I love that with this setup you have the option to close the doors when not imbibing! The glasses and bottles are kept organized and easily accessible. The aqua lacquer and brass base and hardware only add a splash of fun to this inviting piece!

SummerHouse designers' favorite home bars // www.alwayssummerblog.com

INTERIOR DESIGNER KATHERINE SHELTON

What I love most about this home bar is that it does not look like a home bar!  A table and counter stools placed in front of clean custom mill work that is outfitted with a mirrored back and glass shelves to house all of your shiney bar essentials. Then surrounded with built ins that are just filled with a mix of beautiful old and new books. I also really love the stark white and caramel color palate.  Blends perfectly with the color of fine whiskey and scotch!

Inside The Orange Box: Favorite White and Light Neutral Paint Colors

Inside The Orange Box this week, we’re talking about paint colors! Choosing a paint color seems to give most people more anxiety than almost anything when it comes to interior design! Our designers weigh in on their favorite white and neutral paint colors to hopefully help reduce the stress commonly associated with the topic!

SummerHouse Designers' favorite white and neutral paint colors // www.alwayssummerblog.com

DESIGNER LISA PALMER

“My go to white is Benjamin Moore Linen White. SummerHouse is painted Linen White and our customers always ask what the wall color is. It is an ivory with not too much yellow in it. It is fresh and light and simply beautiful.”

LINEN WHITE // SummerHouse Designers' Favorite White and Neutral Paint Colors // www.alwayssummerblog.com

DESIGNER TODD PRINCE

“My favorite “go to” white is Ben Moore White Dove.  It’s crisp and clean and has no weird undertone.”

WHITE DOVE // SummerHouse Designers' Favorite White and Neutral Paint Colors // www.alwayssummerblog.com

DESIGNER ELISH PHARES MOON

“My go to neutral paint colors are Moonlight White or Dune White, both by Benjamin Moore. They almost universally compliment and are the perfect backdrop for any design.”

MOONLIGHT WHITE // SummerHouse Designers' Favorite White and Neutral Paint Colors // www.alwayssummerblog.com

DUNE WHITE // SummerHouse Designers' Favorite White and Neutral Paint Colors // www.alwayssummerblog.com

DESIGNER MARY COURTNEY JOHNS

“I recently used Benjamin Moore Moonshine to refinish a client’s breakfast table and chairs. The color looked fantastic as the backdrop for the charcoal velvet and marble design cotton upholstery that I used. The paint has a blue gray tint while staying light and fresh.”

Inside The Orange Box: How To Make A Bed, Part 2

21
AUGUST
2015

We gave you part one last week, so today we give you part two of this Orange Box topic: Our designers’ favorite ways to make a bed!

DESIGNER TODD PRINCE

“I think bedding should be super practical. You have to be able to clean it! I love a coverlet with a duvet folded at the foot of the bed. That allows your bedding to be changed out with the seasons, since we need to be able to do that here in the South! On a king bed, I love doing two king size pillows against the headboard with 3 euroshams in front. I’m all about practicality, texture, and color. I love a pretty and functional bed!”

DESIGNER CAMILLE HOLLAND

“My favorite way to make a bed usually starts with crisp white bedding and a white coverlet, while using a neutral soft patterned fabric for euros or accent pillows! Simple and classic!”

DESIGNER LINDSEY TOWNSEND

“I like to keep an overall clean and simplistic look, definitely not too over done.  I love accent fabrics, so if I use a really bold pattern fabric as a large lumbar across the front, I will use fairly simple euro shams behind the lumbar to balance it out. I tend to use euro shams most often because I like the height they give (unless the headboard is very low, then I will use standard shams.) Also, I like always having something at the foot of the bed. It can be a folded duvet, throw, or bed scarf. Layers of texture and soft pattern can help create a most inviting environment!”

DESIGNER KATY HINES

“I always start with whites for the basics like coverlets, sheets, etc. It’s fresh, crisp, and relaxing. Then I layer color and texture in the accent pillows and throws to tie in with the paint, art, and accessories.”
