Say Hello to Bethany!

18
FEBRUARY
2014

Meet Bethany! We have a precious new face in the House that y’all need to get familiar with! This cute face belongs to Bethany Sootheran, our brand new Saturday receptionist/part time Fabric Librarian! We are beyond thrilled to have this girl around here helping us out! She’s currently an Interior Design student at Mississippi College, but of course there’s so much more to her! Let’s get to know her just a little better! 🙂

Tell us a little bit about yourself!

I grew up in rural New York. A few weeks after getting married, my husband and I moved to this area so that I could train with a professional ballet company in Jackson.  Two years later, I enrolled at Mississippi College and discovered my love for design soon after!  We’ve now lived in the area for eight years, so we like to call ourselves transplants! I often miss my amazing family, the snow, and the gorgeous fall leaves of Upstate New York but I’ve happily embraced this as my second home.

Why did you pick Interior Design as your major?

I view Interior Design as a way to not only explore my love of art and aesthetics but also as a way to connect with people. There’s something very deeply personal about the space we live life in. I feel that it’s a great privilege that another person would invite me into that part of their world and allow me to use my skills and creativity to make it a safer and happier place for them to be.

What is the best movie you’ve seen recently?

The Secret Life of Walter Mitty…I instantly fell in love with this movie because being the Type A person that I am, I could relate to Walter. His story was a beautiful reminder to embrace life for what it is…to enjoy the simple, everyday things and live life to the fullest!…And it also gave me a bad case of wanderlust!

What is your favorite design blog or magazine and why do you love it?

You mean other than “Always Summer” right?! Wink wink… I seem to always have a copy of Interior Design Magazine lying around. I love it for its variety…It never fails to inspire me!

What’s your favorite local restaurant in the Jackson area?

The sushi counter at Kroger?!… They have sushi… even at 2 AM! Just kidding!  It’s nearly impossible to choose one, but if I had to I would say Aladdin. If I had to live off one type of food from now until the day I die, it would be Mediterranean.

What is your favorite way to spend a day away from school and work?

Resting, enjoying the quiet, spending time with my husband, catching up with the people I love…

Tell us a little bit about your current involvement in ballet!

I’ve been dancing for as long as I can remember… and even before I was born as my mom likes to tell me! It’s a gift from God that brings me true joy! Currently, I’m not performing but I love taking class and training as often as I can.

How would you describe your personal style, as far as interiors go?

I like to balance a variety of elements when I design. I would describe my style as chic yet approachable, laid back, crisp and clean, textured, eclectic… I want people to walk into the spaces I create, breath a sign of relief and let go of their troubles for a moment.

How do you take your caffeine?

Mocha Mint flavored coffee… freshly ground and brewed in my French press travel mug… Mmmm! One sip and all is good in the world!

Quick lightening round! Which do you most prefer out of…

– beach or mountains? …Beach!
– coke or diet coke? …Diet!…But I try to avoid both.
– dogs or cats?…Dogs!
– books or magazines?…Hmmm…Do I really have to choose one?!
– weekend road trip or staycation?…It depends on what kind of a week I had!
– cabin in the woods or big city boutique hotel?…big city boutique hotel
– Skittles or MnM’s? …M&M’s for sure!

Thank you Bethany for telling us a little more about yourself! We are thrilled to have this girl around keeping us just a tad more organized! 🙂

Risky Business

12
FEBRUARY
2014

A few of us overheard a conversation a few days ago between Lisa and Todd where Todd was running some renovation ideas for his own home past Lisa. Although the selections that were holding him up were all beautiful, one of the options was something a little more daring, a little outside-of-the-box, and a little more… well, “Todd!”

That’s when we heard Lisa ask the most thought provoking question…

What are you if you're not taking a risk?

What are you if you’re not taking a risk?

Think about it!

Clean and Inviting

02
JANUARY
2014

Today we have a beautiful project by designer Casey Jenkins to show you! This Master Bedroom turned out exactly how Casey and her clients wanted it, which is always the best outcome! We’ll let Casey tell you a little more about the project!

Bedroom by designer Casey Jenkins // SummerHouse

“The clients started off needing a desk for their office. They were very particular about color finishes and function for their everyday use. Then focus shifted to completing the Living Room.

When I proposed the Living Room, they were so inspired that we decided to complete other rooms as well! This is where we decided to do the Master Bedroom, which is always my favorite room to design! In a Master Bedroom, it is easy to lock down purpose for furniture pieces as well as comfort for the client.”

Master Bedroom by Interior Designer Casey Jenkins | SummerHouse

“These two young clients loved the color palette that was presented to them, and we got started right away! It may be hard to capture by photograph, but the back wall is lined with a Schumacher ivory and matte gold Greek key design. The drapery fabric has an embroidered linen abstract vertical design providing movement and color. The bed was custom made by a local artisan with a light cream linen insert.

We went with all custom pillows and went between slight variations of fabric colors ranging from ivory to light and charcoal blue. The Moore Council Washed Oak Chests are fabulous with a secret door at the top!”

Master Bedroom by Interior Designer Casey Jenkins | SummerHouse

“My favorite wall in this room houses 9 Lauren LaChance botanicals. They bring such a warmth to the space and sense of nature into this serene room! The small slip-covered Lee chairs allow for a small reading area with custom Hodsoll McKenzie embroidered pillows.”

“I so enjoy working with these clients that allow me to present to them what I believe is best for them in their everyday environment. The home’s interior now feels so clean and inviting, just the way we wanted it!”

Fenwick Residence

26
NOVEMBER
2013

Designer Elizabeth Gullett recently completed a FABULOUS project that we wanted to share with you! We got Elizabeth to tell us a little about this beautiful kitchen and bathroom, and a little about her thought process, while working on the Fenwick Residence…

{ KITCHEN }

“This kitchen was designed for a young, hip, growing family. It needed to be modern and crisp, but still warm and approachable. The creamy white cabinets and wall color make one of my favorite combos: Benjamin Moore Moonlight White and Simply White. The touches of warm brass on the lighting and hardware give a touch of the past, but in a fresh new way. The dark walnut island adds a big shot of warmth and richness- without it, I think this kitchen would have felt cold and boring. Sunbrella slipcovers on the island barstools will hold up to lots of spaghetti- just bleach these babies!”

Design by Elizabeth Gullett

{ BATHROOM }

“This bathroom is one of my favorite parts of the house. A sculptural soaking tub makes a strong focal point immediately as you enter, grounded by the silk pendant overhead. The marble is everywhere- the floors, the walls, and then detailed on the shower floor and ceiling. Huge glass shower doors on each side keep it clean and open. The same Moonlight White and Simply White paint that was used in the kitchen is repeated here. The hardware color changed to polished nickel, giving a clean, crisp feeling. (Note: mixing metals in a house can be great- it gives depth and interest from room to room! I used soft satin brass, polished nickel, and bronzed iron in this house.)”

New From Studio Bon!

12
NOVEMBER
2013

We have some exciting posts to bring you later this week recapping a super fun staff party we had over the weekend, Christmas plans, and some beautiful projects by our talented design staff! But since those aren’t ready yet, we wanted to show you a few new intros we’re kind of going crazy over right now…. 🙂

One of our favorite fabric lines, Studio Bon, has come out with some new patterns that we’re just in love with! (And not only do they offer fabrics, but wallcoverings too!!)

The goldy tones get us in the holiday mood for some reason, and the patterns are so fun and different (which Stuio Bon is always good at introducing!)

SUMMERHOUSE LOVES STUDIO BON!

We could see the wallcovering in a powder room or as an accent wall, and the fabrics would be great for headboards, pillow, or anything in between!

Do you love these as much as we do?!

One Fantastic Nursery, Complete!

31
OCTOBER
2013

A few months ago, we showed you a beautiful presentation of one fantastic nursery by SummerHouse designers Lindsey and Chelsea… Everything about the presentation was perfect, and as we mentioned in that original post, the items in this room were carefully chosen so the space could be every bit as functional as it is pretty.

Now that everything in this room as been installed, we’re happy to be able to share with you the finished product!

Lindsey and Chelsea did an impeccable job of detailing out the room (we love the contrast buttons used on the tufted ottoman!) and making it unique and feminine without it being over-the-top girly.

The client is happy with the result, which is of course, the best outcome of all! We know she and her baby girl will be able to enjoy this peaceful room to the fullest! 🙂

Meet Anna!

18
OCTOBER
2013

annaWe’ve got a new face around SummerHouse! (Two actually, but we’re only introducing you to one today. You’ll meet the other in the next week or two!)

This newbie is Anna Goodson, and she is our official house photographer and web store manager! (The web store is still in the startup phase, but Anna’s going to get it up and rolling as soon as she can!)

Here’s a quick little Q&A with Anna so you can get to know her a little better!

1. Tell us where you’re from and something unique about your family and/or pets!

I grew up in Florence, Mississippi with my mom, dad, and older brother. Something interesting about us is that both my brother and I were adopted as newborns, and I have never had a day in my life (that I remember, at least) where I haven’t had a dog.

2. What is your favorite thing about SummerHouse (so far!)

Oh man, there are so many great things about SummerHouse (and I’m not just saying that!)! If I MUST choose my favorite thing, though, it would be the other people I work with. I’m surrounded by fun, creative, and driven people. It is a very positive and happy environment where people are having fun, but also working hard doing what they love. It’s only been a couple of week, but they made me feel like a part of the team since I stepped in the door on day one. (Did I mention there’s wine?)

3. What is one of your favorite things about being a photograher?

3. Again, SO many good things!! I really love being able to capture the beauty in people and things. I enjoy being able to travel, being able to meet so many new people, and see so many new places while I’m on jobs. I like being able to take something that people see so often that they overlook it, and then photograph it and make them really see it again.

4. How do you take your caffeine?

Any and every way I can. As far as coffee, though, I’ll take a large white mocha with soy milk, an extra shot, and no whip, please and thanks.

5. What’s your favorite local restaurant in the Jackson metro area?

That would have to be Taqueria La Guadalupe. It’s this tiny little mexican restaurant at the corner of County Line and Old Canton that is to DIE for. If you haven’t been yet, you should probably just go ahead and cancel all other plans. Yes, it’s that good.

6. What song are you obsessed with right now?

I have this really bad habit of getting into a song/artist and then listening to them so much I am half crazy by the time I remember there is other music out there. Right now one of those songs is Three Months by Local Natives. (In case you’re curious, the artist(s) I am religiously into right now is Macklemore & Ryan Lewis. Next time you want to feel like the baddest of the bad just listen to “Make the Money”. Best listened to on LOUD.)

7. How would you describe your personal style, as far as interiors?

Pretty much anything cozy. If I could just have blankets and pillows everywhere, I would. Oh! I’ve got it! – My style: Blanket fort 😉
In all seriousness, though, that’s another hard one. I love old wood (especially old wood floors), faux fur rugs and throws, BIG windows, exposed brick (love it when it’s painted white!), neutrals, fresh flowers, and SO MUCH MORE.

8. What is your #1 go-to piece in your wardrobe?

I have a pair of black heeled lace up ankle boots that I couldn’t live without. They basically look like a chic heeled version of a combat boot, and I wear them pretty much every day. I’m almost positive that everyone at SummerHouse thinks they’re the only shoes I own.

9. What character on TV do you most identify with?

This one took some thinking. I’m not a huge tv watcher unless it’s one of my few “shows”, but the person I could think of that I think I relate to most would be Robin from How I Met Your Mother. She is a tom boy, but can still be feminine, she enjoys sports, she can be super awkward (my life), and at times has a wickedly sarcastic sense of humor, which I love.

Thanks, Anna, for taking the time to share a little about yourself with us! We’re loving having this girl up here so far and look forward to sharing more of her work with all of you!!

Heaven Is This Guest Room

16
OCTOBER
2013

Lisa recently completed a guest room project that is pretty much perfection…

Heaven is this Guest Room // SummerHouse

Lisa on the project:

“I’ve worked with this client for years so I’m familiar with her style. I kind of had a blank slate in this room.

My client loves a mix of modern and vintage. She also loves white. She owned a bowfront antique chest that had beautiful walnut veneer and also an old gold leaf caned bench. So those were the two vintage pieces. We also added a reproduction bergere that I had painted.”

Bedroom by Lisa Palmer // SummerHouse // Ridgeland, MS

Bedroom by Lisa Palmer // SummerHouse // Ridgeland, MS

“Everything in the room is airy, light, white, and cream. But the trick in a all white and cream room is mixing textures. Because if you don’t, you get boring. In this space, you’ve got cottons, you’ve got silk, silk velvet, wool and sisal, white resin on the side table, with a little gold leaf… Just lots of texture.”

Bedroom by Lisa Palmer // SummerHouse // Ridgeland, MS

“We also mixed high priced items with lower priced items. We did a high low thing. The fuzzy throw at the end of the bed is from Pottery Barn! And the rug wasn’t expensive. But the silk velvet pillow… That cost a little bit!”

Bedroom by Lisa Palmer // SummerHouse // Ridgeland, MS

“The end result is a guest room that is calming, light, comfortable, refined, and refreshing!”
