A Little Lamp Lovin’

13
JUNE
2013

Lovely lamps are the key to creating just the right ambiance in a space. In many cases, a lamp can make or break a space, adding the perfect finishing touch to an otherwise incomplete room.

Because lamps are SO important, our staff is chiming in on which ones top their lists of favorites!

Lisa Palmer :: Pipa Lamp by Oly Studio

“I love the shape, resin texture, and retro vibe. It works great in a rustic modern space as well as a thoroughly modern one. Great scale too!”

SUMMERHOUSE LAMP LOVIN

Todd Prince :: Herst Lamp by Arteriors

“I love the combo of marble and brass. It’s chic and modern with a great retro feel.”

Herst Lamp by Arteriors :: The SummerHouse staff's favorite lamps

Elish Phares :: Ananas Lamp by Ro Sham Beaux

“My favorite lamp has been the Ananas Lamp from Ro Sham Beaux for several years now. This little lamp makes a statement and screams glamour! I hope to one day have a pair for my bedroom!”

Ananas Lamp by Ro Sham Beaux :: The SummerHouse staff's favorite lamps

Lindsey Townsend :: Cabochon Lamp & Triton Lamp, both by Emporium Home

“Ok, it’s too difficult for me to only choose one! I love lamps so much, I picked two… I love the detail work of the Cabochon Lamp for casual rustic/modern spaces. The stones inlayed in the carved wood frame is so unique!

Cabochon Lamp by Emporium Home :: The SummerHouse staff's favorite lamps

The Triton Lamp is very chic and sophisticated. I love the added detail of the lucite accent on the base. Makes the perfect statement!”

Triton Lamp by Emporium Home :: The SummerHouse staff's favorite lamps

Chelsea Sirmons :: Mya Lamp by Barbara Barry for Arteriors

“It’s got a very feminine silhouette, I love that it’s glass, and I love the color. It’s a perfect delicate little accent!”

Mya Lamp by Arteriors :: The SummerHouse staff's favorite lamps

Patricia Robbins :: Dagan Lamp by Arteriors

“I love this lamp because of the mixture of textures it has. The middle strip reminds me of snake skin, which I love (faux of course), so it is the perfect item for adding an edgy feel to your space!”

Dagan Lamp by Arteriors :: The SummerHouse staff's favorite lamps

Laurel Donahoo :: Mandarin Lamp by Barry Dixon for Arteriors

“This lamp takes my breath away every time I walk past it on the showroom floor! It’s a really neat combo of old school + modern, especially with the white finish. I will have this lamp in my house one day!”

Mandarin Lamp by Arteriors :: The SummerHouse staff's favorite lamps

Casey Jenkins :: Aqua Crackle Lamp Waylande Gregory

“I love the clean lines I love the crispness of the square base with the stark white paper shade. It’s a vibrant teal and I think it’s the perfect accent!”

Aqua Crackle Lamp by Waylande Gregory :: The SummerHouse staff's favorite lamps

Ashley Wooten (our intern!) :: Gilded Driftwood Lamp by Regina Andrew

“I always like to bring nature into the interior of a home when I can. I love how this lamp is dipped in gold because it makes it so fab! I also like the oversized linen shade because it pairs well with just about anything.”

Gilded Driftwood Lamp by Regina Andrew :: The SummerHouse staff's favorite lamps

And there you have it! Current lamp obsessions from a handful of our talented staff! Do you have a favorite lamp?

Before & After: Kitchen Update Plus Some!

06
JUNE
2013

Today’s Before and After is outstanding! Designer Lindsey Townsend completed a project a couple of months ago that we’re very excited to tell you about.

We’ve been calling this project “The Kansas Kitchen,” although it’s more than just the kitchen! It also included a powder room and a laundry room/butler’s pantry. The transformation is remarkable!

The homeowner is originally from Mississippi but has lived in Kansas the past couple of years, so she was familiar with SummerHouse. After following us for a while on social media, she turned to us for the long-distance project! After a preliminary meeting at SummerHouse, Lindsey took a trip to Kansas to measure the space (there were no house plans!) and take pictures. They met in person two more times, and the rest was done via phone calls and email! Isn’t technology amazing??

The black and white pictures will give you an idea of what the spaces looked like before Lindsey got in on the project. Let’s start with the main room…

before-1

Lindsey said the client was a joy to work with because she already had an idea of what she wanted. She had been collecting magazine pages and pinning photos on Pinterest, so Lindsey was able to get a real sense of the style this client wanted to achieve.

The client wanted something lighter, brighter, and simply more functional. She wanted to get rid of the Santa Fe-esque medallion behind her cooktop and open up what was somewhat of a crowded space with only eight foot ceilings. The home is a bit older, built in the 1960’s, so the floor plan was rather choppy.

After knocking out a few walls and moving things around, Lindsey was able to open things up, make the space seem bigger, and bring a lot more life and personality in to the rooms.

One of Lindsey’s favorite parts of the kitchen is the island. She modeled it after a piece of furniture that she and the client both loved, pictured below. They picked out the quartzite island top together while Lindsey was in Kansas, but many of the other materials were bought locally in Jackson then drop-shipped to the home in Kansas.

Before and After | Kansas Kitchen | Designer Lindsey Townsend at SummerHouseThe finish on the base of the island is the result of a multi-step process of staining and white washing. It turned out perfectly, and brings in a rustic element, which the client wanted.

Another way Lindsey created the illusion of taller ceilings was by choosing ceiling mount light fixtures. She also took the backsplash behind the cooktop all the way up to the ceiling, which made things seem more open. “I did a lot of research because I’d never worked with such low ceilings before,” Lindsey said.

Off of the kitchen is the laundry room, which is now also used as a butler’s pantry as well.

After adding shelving at one end of the laundry room, a door on a hinge would’ve been cumbersome, so the sliding door was perfect for this spot, and a great way to save space. It also added to the style of the kitchen.

Lindsey used the same quartz here that she used on the perimiter countertops in the kitchen, as well as the same backsplash and paint colors, making the flow into the laundry room seamless. (The paint colors, by the way, are Smoke Embers and Simply White, both by Benjamin Moore.)

The powder room was also in need of an update, so Lindsey used a remnant piece of quartzite from the island, painted the sink base, and wallpapered with the always gorgeous Kelly Wearstler Imperial Trellis pattern in charcoal.

“The whole thing with this client was getting more function and more storage because she has a large family,” said Lindsey. “She also wanted to incorporate more of a SummerHouse-y feel into her home (which was predominately filled with dark woods and finishes) without any of the update feeling out of place with the style of the rest of her home.”

We love how it turned out, and most importantly, the client is very happy with the result, too, which is the best news of all!

Yesterday, we had a great time at a dear client’s beautiful home getting set up for a photo shoot for the Mistletoe Marketplace Steering Committee!

Photo Shoot at a Beautiful House

Talented photographer Allison Muirhead got some great shots of the fun Junior League gals (and talking to all of them got us excited about Mistletoe Marketplace even though it’s not until November!)

While the photo session was going on, we walked around the rest of the house and snapped a few shots of this GORGEOUS home. Here are a few teasers… More photos to come in the very near future!

Welcome To The Jungle

29
APRIL
2013

Designer Elizabeth Gullett and her fabulous assistat Patricia Robbins completed the install of a cute little boy’s room last week that we are dying to share with you!

Keep in mind, this is only a peek at the room, as the room dweller was very excited about his new hang out space and wasn’t in the mood to let us take a whole bunch of pictures!

Elizabeth was told by the boy’s parents that they wanted there to be a little bit of a theme in the room, and that it had to be kid friendly (of course!), so Elizabeth went with a loose jungle theme!

It turned out beautifully, and is the perfect combo of little boy + clean, timeless design.

Meet New Designer Casey Jenkins!

26
APRIL
2013

SummerHouse designer Casey Jenkins

SummerHouse Interior Designer Casey Jenkins is brand new to our little family up here and she’s doing a great job of fitting right in!

We’ve loved getting to know her, so now is your turn to learn all about Casey with this little Q&A!

Q: Tell us a little about yourself! Where you’re from, where you went to school, what you majored in…

A: I grew up in Brandon, MS in a home my mom designed and dad built! I attended Mississippi State University, majored in Interior Design, and was a Chi Omega! Go STATE!

Q: When did you first realize that you wanted to be an interior designer?

A: Growing up I always knew I enjoyed the idea of having my own business one day, and in fact, it took a year of classes in General Business to realize my love was Interior Design! After touring the studio I transferred and squeezed 4 years of design in 3! Absolutely love what I do!

Q: We hear you have some four-legged friends running around at your house! Tell us about them! 🙂

A: The divas are Millie Mae (too cool for anybody!) , Mollie Moo (we aren’t even sure what she is?), and Little Bit (our main most diva)!

Q: What is your favorite thing do on a day or weekend off?

A: I absolutely LOVE to travel! Colorado last week to hit the slopes and D.C. next weekend for Ball on the Mall! When I am home, I crank up the push lawn mower and absolutely love edging my yard?! No really. Anything outdoors!

Q: What’s the best movie you’ve seen recently?

A: Olympus Has Fallen! Gave me nightmares and I believe I was fighting off terrorists that night in my sleep. Gerald Butler was an amazing actor! Proud to be an American.

Q: Where is the coolest/best/most awesome place you’ve ever visited?

A: To this day, the cruise to Alaska we took as a family has remained to be one of my fondest memories. Words simply can not describe seeing enormous glaciers falling into the ocean, the wildlife, and swimming in heated pools in the middle of icey waters!

Q: In your short time here so far, have you developed any major crushes on any pieces on the showroom floor?!

A: Easy question! I am in love with Barry Dixon’s antique screens displayed so beautiful! Looking forward to having him here with us May 9th!

[{ Find out more on our upcoming Barry Dixon event here! }]

Q: How would you describe your personal style as far as interiors?

A: Hard to narrow down, but generally speaking, I love layers! Depending on the client’s space, I enjoy keeping things clean but cozy! Todd Prince would laugh, but I tend to over use the word “transitional”.

Q: What’s an interesting fact about you that your co-workers may not know about you yet?! 🙂

A: I did competitive swimming for 8 years and traveled most of the Southeast for weekly competitions! It taught me a lot of self discipline and time management. I love the friendships I have to this day from those interactions!

Meet Our Fabric Librarian, Jaclyn!

17
APRIL
2013

JACLYN PETTYMeet one of the newest members of our ever-growing SummerHouse family!

Jaclyn Petty, our outstanding part-time Fabric Librarian, answers a few questions for us so we can get to know her just a little better!

Q: In a nutshell, tell us what you do up here at SummerHouse!
A: I am the Fabric Organizer/Librarian! In a nutshell, I maintain the fabric library by organizing samples and reference materials, adding new information as needed, and deleting dated info.

Q: Where did you to go college and what did you major in?
A: I graduated from Mississippi State University in May 2012 with a Bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts with an emphasis in Graphic Design.

Q: What’s your favorite spring trend this year?
A: All the new spring colors and patterns. Bright florals and polka dots are so adorable.

Q: What’s your favorite movie these days?
A: Oooh My favorite recent movie would have to be Life of Pi. It was such a great book and the movie was just unforgettable. The 227 days at sea are a test of physique, mental adaptation and faith, and Suraj Sharma makes Pi’s spiritual journey as convincing as his nautical one. So beautiful!

A sample of Jac's mad organization skills!
A sample of Jac’s mad organization skills!

Q: If you could choose one artist to listen to 24/7, who would it be?
A: Beyonce, of course

Q: What’s your favorite way to enjoy caffeine?
A: Coffee! Isn’t that the only way?

Q: Got any fun trips planned for the summer?
A: I actually recently bought Beyonce tickets for her concert in July. You have no idea how excited I am!

Q: What else do we need to know about you?! Spill it!!
A: I love painting in my spare time. Abstract landscapes is one of my favorite things to paint!

Thank you, Jaclyn, for coming in every day and tackling the sometimes-daunting (actually, often-daunting!) resource library with a smile on your face! We love having you up here!

“Home Away From Home” Master Bedroom Design

15
APRIL
2013

Lisa and Elish have a beautiful ongoing project with a very dear client who lives in a fantastic Fondren home, and the master bedroom in this home has recently been completed!

HOME AWAY FROM HOME // SUMMERHOUSE // RIDGELAND, MS

Lisa on this bedroom:

“When I first met with my client, the first thing I noticed about this room was that the original furnishings were out of scale. The bed was too small for the space, the side tables were too small, and the rug was too small. So my challenge was to make sure that the pieces I selected would fit in this very large room with large walls and tall ceilings.”

Fondren Residence by Lisa Palmer | SummerHouse, Ridgeland, MS

“My client wanted a sitting area where they could watch television, but they also wanted to be able to watch television from their bed, so I had that challenge too.”

Fondren Residence by Lisa Palmer | SummerHouse, Ridgeland, MS

“The client wanted the bedroom to be a “home away from home.” My design approach was to make it light and airy and soft so I chose fabrics that were a mixture of natural linen, velvet, and even a washable velvet on the swivel chairs and ottoman in the sitting area. When you’re going white on upholstery, that kind of thing is important!”

Fondren Residence by Lisa Palmer | SummerHouse, Ridgeland, MS

Fondren Residence by Lisa Palmer | SummerHouse, Ridgeland, MS

“There’s a lot of custom work in this space as well. The bed, the etagere, the desk, and the side tables were all custom made. In fact, the desk was touched by four different artisans!”

Fondren Residence by Lisa Palmer | SummerHouse, Ridgeland, MS

Fondren Residence by Lisa Palmer | SummerHouse, Ridgeland, MS

“There was some renovation in the space as well. We changed an old, low cased archway by raising it and adding old beams. We redesigned the fireplace, mantle, and stonework to give it a fresh look. And we repainted all the walls.”

Oxford Condo Before and After

11
APRIL
2013

Here’s a great BEFORE and AFTER to get your day started off on the right foot!

This Oxford, MS condo, designed by Todd Prince, is the perfect example of how to do a LOT in a small space!

Here’s what Todd was working with:

BEFORE AND AFTER // SUMMERHOUSE

And here is how Todd transformed this space

SummerHouse Before & After
AFTER

According to Todd, the client wanted to fit as much seating as possible into the small living room since they do a good bit of entertaining, particularly during football season. The client’s personal style is a little bit dressy, but things also needed to be family friendly, so Todd incorporated a pair of tight back sofas, some durable linen chairs (which you can’t see), and some movable Hickory Chair benches that are just as beautiful as they are purposeful. These can be moved all over the condo to provide extra seating wherever needed!

The client’s artwork was the starting point for what turned out to be a beautiful space! Kudos on a great job, Todd!
