We have a precious new face in the House that y’all need to get familiar with! This cute face belongs to Bethany Sootheran, our brand new Saturday receptionist/part time Fabric Librarian! We are beyond thrilled to have this girl around here helping us out! She’s currently an Interior Design student at Mississippi College, but of course there’s so much more to her! Let’s get to know her just a little better! 🙂
Tell us a little bit about yourself!
I grew up in rural New York. A few weeks after getting married, my husband and I moved to this area so that I could train with a professional ballet company in Jackson. Two years later, I enrolled at Mississippi College and discovered my love for design soon after! We’ve now lived in the area for eight years, so we like to call ourselves transplants! I often miss my amazing family, the snow, and the gorgeous fall leaves of Upstate New York but I’ve happily embraced this as my second home.
Why did you pick Interior Design as your major?
I view Interior Design as a way to not only explore my love of art and aesthetics but also as a way to connect with people. There’s something very deeply personal about the space we live life in. I feel that it’s a great privilege that another person would invite me into that part of their world and allow me to use my skills and creativity to make it a safer and happier place for them to be.
What is the best movie you’ve seen recently?
The Secret Life of Walter Mitty…I instantly fell in love with this movie because being the Type A person that I am, I could relate to Walter. His story was a beautiful reminder to embrace life for what it is…to enjoy the simple, everyday things and live life to the fullest!…And it also gave me a bad case of wanderlust!
What is your favorite design blog or magazine and why do you love it?
You mean other than “Always Summer” right?! Wink wink… I seem to always have a copy of Interior Design Magazine lying around. I love it for its variety…It never fails to inspire me!
What’s your favorite local restaurant in the Jackson area?
The sushi counter at Kroger?!… They have sushi… even at 2 AM! Just kidding! It’s nearly impossible to choose one, but if I had to I would say Aladdin. If I had to live off one type of food from now until the day I die, it would be Mediterranean.
What is your favorite way to spend a day away from school and work?
Resting, enjoying the quiet, spending time with my husband, catching up with the people I love…
Tell us a little bit about your current involvement in ballet!
I’ve been dancing for as long as I can remember… and even before I was born as my mom likes to tell me! It’s a gift from God that brings me true joy! Currently, I’m not performing but I love taking class and training as often as I can.
How would you describe your personal style, as far as interiors go?
I like to balance a variety of elements when I design. I would describe my style as chic yet approachable, laid back, crisp and clean, textured, eclectic… I want people to walk into the spaces I create, breath a sign of relief and let go of their troubles for a moment.
How do you take your caffeine?
Mocha Mint flavored coffee… freshly ground and brewed in my French press travel mug… Mmmm! One sip and all is good in the world!
Quick lightening round! Which do you most prefer out of…
– beach or mountains? …Beach!
– coke or diet coke? …Diet!…But I try to avoid both.
– dogs or cats?…Dogs!
– books or magazines?…Hmmm…Do I really have to choose one?!
– weekend road trip or staycation?…It depends on what kind of a week I had!
– cabin in the woods or big city boutique hotel?…big city boutique hotel
– Skittles or MnM’s? …M&M’s for sure!
Thank you Bethany for telling us a little more about yourself! We are thrilled to have this girl around keeping us just a tad more organized! 🙂
