Meet Elizabeth at SummerHouse | Ridgeland

Meet our new Fabric Librarian, Elizabeth! // www.alwayssummerblog.com

We have a new face at the Ridgeland shop that you definitely need to get to know! We have loved having Elizabeth Fowlkes on our team and you are going to love her, too! Her bright spirit and happy disposition is just so inspiring!

Elizabeth is our part time fabric librarian during the week (she comes in after her “day job”) and is our receptionist on Saturdays. As per our usual, we did a get-to-know-her Q&A, so here it is!

Tell us a little about yourself!Meet our new Fabric Librarian, Elizabeth! // www.alwayssummerblog.com

I am originally from Oxford, MS. I graduated from Oxford High School and completed my Bachelor’s degree in Communication at Auburn University. War Eagle!  I came back to Ole Miss for graduate school, where I studied School Counseling.  I have been in Jackson for the past two years and I work as a School Counselor at Goodloe Elementary School in Canton.  I have a younger sister, Katherine, who just graduated from Ole Miss and lives in Lubbock, TX.  My parents live in Oxford and I go back to visit as often as I can!

Tell us a bit about your “day job” and what you like about it!

I work as an elementary school counselor during the day and I absolutely love it!!  I love to explore the world through the eyes of children.  I love that my job involves painting, coloring, and puppet shows!  I learn so much from my students. We just finished celebrating “The Great Kindness Challenge” and collected over 900 canned goods for a local food bank, which was all their idea!

What do you like to do on a lazy weekend?

I love to get a pedicure, clean my house, sit on the couch with a good book, and binge watch Friends!

What was your first impression of SummerHouse?!

I fell in love with SummerHouse instantly.  I dream about having a “SummerHouse house.” Everything in the store is so crisp and clean, and every space is beautiful.

Tell us something you’ve learned from your short time at SummerHouse thus far! 🙂

As a counselor I am all about relationships. I can tell that relationships are also very important to the SummerHouse staff also…. relationships with each other and with every customer who walks through the door. That is very special. The coffee is great, too!

What are your currently reading? Do you like it?

I have read three of Liane Moriarty’s books since Christmas and I couldn’t put them down! I loved Big Little Lies, The Husband’s Secret, and Truly Madly Guilty.

What’s your favorite social media platform and why?

I love Instagram….I love to see where everyone is traveling, eating, shopping, etc.

What is your favorite meal in the whole wide world? Tell us a little about it, where it’s from or who cooks it, and why you love it!

My mom’s Chicken Spaghetti! I could eat it for breakfast, lunch, and dinner forever.  It reminds me of growing up and it’s one of the only things I know how to make well!

Favorite magazine or source for inspiration? Why?

I love Southern Living! You can find the answer for anything and everything.

What else do we need to know about you?!

I am so excited to be a part of the SummerHouse team!

Thank you so much, Elizabeth! We are thrilled to have ya here 🙂 Thanks for all you have done so far!

Ask Lisa: All White Rooms

All White Rooms: The DOs and DON'Ts from Lisa Palmer of SummerHouse // #interiordesign

We’ve added a fun new video to our YouTube channel as the first in a new series we’re going to start doing called ASK LISA! We asked for y’all to submit questions to us a few weeks back, and we got some GREAT responses! The one we started with was,

“Can you ever go overboard with white when designing a room?”

Watch the video to see Lisa’s response!

So to recap:

  1. Hire a professional! All white rooms can be hard.
  2. Make sure to mix textures.
  3. Add interesting woods!
  4. You do have to worry about dirt. Make sure to use 100% acrylic or Crypton fabrics when possible.
  5. Get a throw to protect your sofas and chairs from pets.
  6. Again, we reiterate, hire a professional! 🙂 (We love doing all white rooms! Hint, hint!)

We have several questions lined up to get Lisa’s opinion on, but we’d love more! So feel free to submit your own questions for Lisa in the comments below! We’d love to hear what you guys want to know from her!

Thank y’all so much for sopping by today! Have a great week!

Q&A With Interior Designer Jenni Hilbun

We are so excited to have Interior Designer Jenni Hilbun join the SummerHouse team in our Oxford location! Jenni is so much fun, is beyond talented, and keeps us laughing! We are thankful to have her as a part of our family. We think you’ll enjoy getting to know her just as much as we have!

SummerHouse | Oxford Interior Designer Jenni Hilbun // www.alwayssummerblog.comCan you tell us a little bit about your background?

I grew up across the south – North Carolina, Georgia, and Mississippi. I spent lots of time with my grandparents in Columbia, MS learning everything from needlepoint (which eventually lead to sewing) to Canasta and of course, spoons!  I finished college at MSU with a Bachelor of Arts in Communication Theory. I fueled my creative side with all types of sewing projects and poured through books and magazines learning interior specialty sewing and loving it, often sewing into the wee hours of the morning. This love and ability has grown into a 20 year career in Interior Design.

I live on a farm in Pontotoc County with my husband, Benton, three children, three dogs, one crazy cat, two beautiful horses and five hens! Life is full and rewarding.

At what point did you realize you were interested in interior design?

Pretty early actually. One of my grandmothers always let us cousins decorate her house for Christmas and that was such a treat. She bought whatever “supplies” we wanted and we went to town with it! We even caught her piano on fire one year with a candle! Never even got in trouble, although I’m sure she was clenching her jaw!
She also fostered my love of sewing and fabrics.

If you could travel anywhere in the world for a week, where would you go?

I am really a homebody. I love being at home!

What is the best movie you’ve seen recently? Why’d you like it?

I don’t really go to movies… They’re too loud! But I have been watching The Crown and Reign and loving both. Of course the costumes and drapery details are fantastic.

What’s your favorite local restaurant and why?

I have lots of favorite restaurants because I don’t like to cook. My very favorites are the ones that get a “to go” order correct consistently! And have a pickup lane.

What is your favorite design publication?

This oscillates between Veranda and Traditional Home. Such good publications. I have difficulty parting with back issues.

If Hollywood wanted to make a movie about you, what actress would you want playing you? Why?

Reese Witherspoon because she catches my attention. She is about my size (a.k.a. “short”) and she is already Southern.

Give us the number one reason you’re excited to be a part of the SummerHouse team!

Absolutely because it is a part of a team. Also, positively: Lisa Palmer!

What is your favorite thing about being an interior designer?

My favorite thing about being a designer is helping families and clients fall in love with their home and special keepsakes all over again.

Who is your favorite character on a TV show and why?

Loreli Gilmore. I SO relate!

What else do we need to know about you?

I am part time at SummerHouse and am primarily there on Monday, Thursday, and Friday, but will always make an appointment convenient for my client.

Meet Chad at SummerHouse | Oxford

We are thrilled to share the news that we have a couple of new designers at SummerHouse | Oxford! Chad Holman and Jenni Hilbun have officially joined the SHOX squad as Interior Designers, and Maddie Ertle (who you may remember from here) has moved on up to an Interior Designer position as well! Laurie Conway is still killing it as an Oxford designer so we just have a really great team going on up there!

Today, we want to introduce you to Chad! We conducted our usual Q&A with him to get to know him a little better. We think you’re going to love him as much as we do!

SummerHouse Oxford Interior Designer Chad Holman // www.alwayssummerblog.comCan you tell us a little bit about your background? Where you grew up, where you went to school, family, etc…?

I spent most of my formative years in Holly Springs MS where I attended Marshall Academy. After Highschool I attended Memphis College of Art. I am married and in the process of fostering 2 girls. The youngest is one and the oldest is two.

At what point did you realize you were interested in interior design? Elaborate just a tad!

I realized I wanted to be an interior designer at a young age. I remember being no older than ten and much to my parents’ dismay rearranging the living room when no one was around. It has always been my passion. I had no choice in the matter. This is the profession I was born to do.

If you could travel anywhere in the world for a week, where would you go? Why?

I have a severe wanderlust for India. I have traveled extensively, and this is one place that I have always wanted to go but never had the chance. I want to explore the cuisine, culture, landscapes, etc… I imagine its streets lined with spice markets, exotic flowers, and gorgeous textiles… Heaven!

What is the best movie you’ve seen recently? Why’d you like it?

The Shape of Water – It was visually stunning!

What’s your favorite local restaurant and why?

It has to be City Grocery. I love it for the shrimp and grits. Why else?

What is your favorite design publication?

I love Architectural Digest and Elle Décor. You will always find these on my coffee table at home. I also love Dwell and Paper magazine. I am always scouring the web for great design blogs. Two of my favorites are Apartment34.com and Yellowtrace.com.au.

Give us the number one reason you’re excited to be a part of the SummerHouse team!

Its reputation! I love being a part of such a talented and established team of designers with a design firm with as many accolades as SummerHouse.

What is your favorite thing about being an interior designer?

I love being able to increase the quality of peoples lives. The spaces we live in are a direct reflection of us. Knowing that I create spaces that give my clients a sense of pride or a beautiful calming place to retreat to after a long day makes me happy. It makes all the long hours and hard work completely worth it.

Who is your favorite character on a TV show OR who is your favorite TV personality and why?

What else do we need to know about you?

I feel that the relationship between designer and client is a close one. We are invited into their homes and is some cases become part of the extended “family”. Because of these relationships I love to put something in every room I design that makes the client laugh or at least brings a smile to their face when they see it. This can be something small and inconspicuous. Most of the time its an inside joke between the client and myself. Many people get caught up in the serious aspects of design. I always try to take the time to step back and remember to have fun. I believe it shows in the finished design.

Thank you so much for your time, Chad! It’s a pleasure having you on board. 🙂

Ridgeland Showroom Update

SummerHouse Furniture and Interior Design // Ridgeland, Mississippi // www.summerhousestyle.com

Our Ridgeland showroom has undergone quite an update recently, and we’re so excited to show you all of our new pieces! We update our floor fairly often because, if you didn’t know, we sell directly off our showroom floor! When you walk in and see something you love, that actual item can be yours! No waiting on a piece exactly like it to come in next month. The chair you see is the chair that can go home with you immediately (if you have room in your vehicle!)

We do also offer a white glove delivery service where you can have your new purchases delivered and placed in your home if they are more than your trunk can handle! 😉

So because we sell directly off our showroom floors, we end up with holes. We fill holes almost daily, but sometimes we just need a full out red0! So here’s the most recent Ridgeland redo. (Oxford’s recent redo will be posted next week!)

It’s All In The Details

You might remember seeing our marketing “wintern” (winter intern) on our InstaStories over the past couple of weeks! We are so thrilled to have Makenzie Brinson with us for her winter break before she heads back for spring semester at Ole Miss!

She’s been so helpful in multiple areas, so we thought we’d get her to contribute a little to the blog, too! We asked her to come up with a concept and subsequently pull together photography and copy for her own blog post here and she totally nailed it. Below, we’ll let Mak take it away! 🙂

/ / / / / / / / / /

It is by no coincidence, many have heard the saying, “It’s all in the details.” When designing a house or room, it is more than just having the perfect sofa, or an exquisite dining room table, all of which are very important. It also includes the picture-perfect details to make your space feel as if it has come to life.

SummerHouse owner and lead designer Lisa Palmer explains details like this: “Having great furniture is like having your little black dress, the basic necessity to any woman’s wardrobe. It is what you do with that dress that makes the outfit. Accessorizing your LBD and designing a room are very similar.”

Because of this, we took to our SummerHouse showroom floor to find our favorite accent pieces, pillows, and accessories.

It's All In The Details // www.alwayssummerblog.com

It's All In The Details // www.alwayssummerblog.com

Since Christmas is right around the corner, we could not help but notice the lovely Christmas tree that sits in our front store room. Sparkling from head to toe, this grey metallic ornament, and the others like it, is sure to help light up the tree while keeping the room extra cozy with its winter hues.

“Something old, something new” holds true to this second photo as one sees how this modern painting works perfectly with this antique table to give the old new life.

With this velvet pillow, we admire how its combination of mixed greys creates a fluent pattern that isn’t overwhelming but is instead subtle in the way it adds pretty color to a room.

It's All In The Details // www.alwayssummerblog.com

It's All In The Details // www.alwayssummerblog.com

Thanks to the pattern of the above pillow, this white patio furniture goes from basic to chic with just the touch of a pillow. Nevertheless, its natural hues leave the room looking simple and timeless.

Light up your night life with these entertaining string lights while adding a little funk by pairing them with a fierce bowl. This combo is certain to leave your friends in awe of the beauty that has invaded your space. This is all due to the fact that you understand the importance of accessorizing.

It's All In The Details // www.alwayssummerblog.com

It's All In The Details // www.alwayssummerblog.com

Sometimes detail is even found in the smallest accessory. By adding a candle, your room can not only enjoy a pop of color, but ALSO a ravishing smell to go along with it.

And finally by adding a little spunk to your patio life, these cheetah pillows are sure to wow any crowd.

As we all know, there are many different ways to liven up a room with detail. These selections are just a few of our favorites here at SummerHouse. After all, famous furniture designer & architect, Charles Eames, said it best when he said, “Details are not the details; they make the design.”

Well Framed

Framed // www.alwayssummerblog.com

We have noticed that many of our designers have been placing exposed wood frame sofas and settees in their projects lately, which got us thinking about how much we love the versatility of this style!

Carved exposed wood adds a touch of old world charm to a space, where sleek wood adds a slightly more modern touch. Either way, we love the element that this type of seating brings into a space!  We rounded up a few of our favorite exposed wood framed pieces for your viewing pleasure. Which one is your favorite?!

The Lifetime of a Furniture Investment

Today, SummerHouse Interior Designer Elish Moon takes the stage to talk a little bit about the life of a piece of furniture and why good furniture from SummerHouse is worth the investment. We love what Elish shares and we think you will too!

The Lifetime of a Furniture Investment // www.alwayssummerblog.com

“So we have entered this era where interior design is trending and more and more accessible. In response, there are more designers, online retailers, and pop up stores than directions to turn. They’ve all got pretty pieces, unique pieces, stylish pieces. How on earth do you make a decision? Well let me share a few insider tips that might make your decision making a hair easier.

Summerhouse has been in business over a decade and is locally owned and operated. That means each piece, each line, each vendor we carry is very specifically chosen for our client and our locale. We’re not a big box store, we aren’t marketing to the masses, and our consumer lives next door, works with us, or runs into us at the local market. What does that mean? We have to sell a product we can stand behind, that is quality, and that will surpass the test of time. I as a designer am incredibly selective about what I sell to my clients. The performance of what I sell is not only a reflection of the vendors we put our names behind but a reflection of my expertise! Many potential clients are scared about making their first big “design investment”. Here are a few common misconceptions that I hear often:

1. “I have kids. And a dog. They eat macaroni and cheese on this. There’s no way I’m purchasing a nice sofa. We’ll get one when they’re grown.”
This makes me cringe. Why can’t you have kids and pets AND a nice sofa? It’s 2017…didn’t you know you can have it all!? If you are buying a “throwaway sofa” it may have to be replaced in a few years. You’ll end up spending the same amount (probably more, actually) continually replacing your “temporary” sofa as you would in the nice one! You can purchase a sofa that has a lifetime warranty on the frame, well made cushions, etc.. and just make smart choices on the fabric. Get a slipcovered sofa that is washable. Order your sofa in a performance fabric. The options are endless! You can live your life (the real one…baby spit up and all) and still be comfortable in your own home. I promise.

2. “Bar stools are how much?! Why?”
What are some of the most used pieces of furniture in your home? Sofa, bar stools… Doesn’t it make sense that a piece you use every single day might need to be high quality so it can take the abuse? Often those “bargain stools” (you know what I’m talking about) are poorly constructed, glued together, stools that got imported here on a container. They cannot hold significant weight, are not engineered for long lasting durability or stability, and wear much more quickly than an american made, hand constructed, piece. All furniture is not created equal y’all.

The Lifetime of a Furniture Investment // www.alwayssummerblog.com

3. “I saw this item online for less and it’s the same item you have in your store???”
This is a tough one. I’ll be honest… sometimes the same item IS out there for less, but there is SO much value built into everything we sell that goes beyond the item itself. All Recliners Are Not Created Equal

Recliners.

That word will divide a room in a heartbeat! Half the world hates the oversized, overstuffed picture that pops into mind, while the other half of the world lives for evenings spent laid out watching tv.

Over the past several years, furniture manufacturers have really grasped onto the concept that, in so many cases, the men need comfy recliners while the women need sleek, clean-lined furniture.  And we as designers are loving it!! In decades past, there has been very little middle ground on this matter. Either the woman sacrifices style for a big puffy recliner, or the man sacrifices comfort for a sleek, yet non-reclinable chair.

Thankfully all of that has changed. Many of our favorite manufacturers continue to introduce beautiful, comfortable recliners each market, and we love it! When the husband and the wife can be equally excited about a recliner, that makes for a happy designer who can pull together a beautiful yet functional room!

Here are six of our top recliner picks that meet all the requirements for the style seekers AND the comfort seekers.

Our Designers' Favorite Recliners // www.alwayssummerblog.com

Are these not beautiful!? These all blend beautifully into a chic room while providing the comfort and function desired of a recliner.

Shop one, four, and five on our online shop, then give us a call about the other three. Our designers can get you all the info you need! Also, keep in mind that this is just a tiny sampling of the recliners we have access to. If you’re looking for something different, we can help! Contact us here.

Thanks so much for stopping by today. We love having you here! 🙂

Why Hire A SummerHouse Designer?

Why should you hire a SummerHouse designer? Our owner and lead designer Lisa Palmer answers that question and dispels a few myths that exist about working with us! Keep reading to see what LP has to say on the matter!

“The thought of hiring a designer can be a bit stressful. Will my designer get my style and produce rooms that I will truly love? Will she send me a huge bill? How do I know she will do what she says? What if she doesn’t communicate well? There are so many concerns, so why hire a SummerHouse designer?

Well, to be honest… I think our designers are the best in the area. Truly! A picture tells a thousand words, so the fact that you can see our work on our website’s interior design section and our social media sites like Instagram and Facebook will seriously help in the decision making. Also the fact that we have two stores in Mississippi showcasing a beautiful mix of furniture, accessories, art and bedding, shows our clients who we are. They can see, touch, and experience the quality of the pieces that we stock and can special order. We also work as a team in most cases, so our clients get not only their preferred SH designer, but most often, we will ask opinions from our team members for confirmation that what we are presenting are the best pieces for the spaces. Our many years of experience in the market, our continuing education with our furniture and accessory manufacturers, the fact that our designers are degreed Interior Designers, and our high level of personal client service are all big factors in why hiring a SH designer is a win-win.

Why Hire A SummerHouse Interior Designer? // www.alwayssummerblog.com

As far as the cost of hiring a SH designer, we are great at working within budgets when they are given to us! We carry some high-end lines, yes, but we also have several outstanding “meat and potatoes” manufacturers who make beautiful, quality products at more affordable prices. We do not charge for our time when you are purchasing from us, so you will not receive a bill for our time in addition to the quote you are presented. You know what you are getting and what it will cost before you ever get out your checkbook.

Since we are local, we have a reputation to maintain, if I’m being quite honest! Our clients are not just customers. They are our friends. The people we run into at Kroger. The people our kids are in school with. They’re not just a number to us like they may be to a big box store. It is my goal for every single person who shops with SummerHouse to leave having had a great experience. People talk. So I don’t want to leave any room for them to be able to talk poorly about my baby! (SummerHouse, that is!)

Lastly, to piggyback on that last point, because we are a local business with a great client base, we have grown to a point where our manufacturers care about keeping us really happy! Our business office and warehouse staff are great at dealing with claims, damages, and other not-so-fun areas of the business so our clients don’t have to. When you order from SummerHouse and something comes in dented or broken, we take care of that for you. When you order from a larger retailer, in most cases, YOU will be the one making the claim on the damaged piece, which is no fun for you. We want your furniture buying process to be enjoyable!

We love what we do, we love getting to make a difference in the lives of our clients, and we value your trust. That is why you should hire a SummerHouse designer!”

What better way to kick off the Ole Miss / LSU weekend?!  The show is from 10-6, with light bites and cocktails from 3-6. Below are a few of the Oxford-y pieces she’ll have with her!

At the Ridgeland shop, we’re excited to welcome jewelry designer Mark Edge in for a jewelry trunk show on Tuesday, 10/24! Mark will have hundreds of pieces of jewelry with him (many of which are brand new introductions) PLUS he is currently taking appointments for one-on-one meetings to discuss custom designs. Mark can take your keepsakes (old keys, medals, lockets, or just whatever!) and turn them into stunning pieces that you can wear. Call us at 601-853-4445 to make an appointment with Mark to discuss him making a piece just for you!

To get things started on the right foot, we’re also hosting a cocktail reception for Mark on Monday 10/23 from 5-7. We hope you’ll join us for a night of fun and fellowship!

The Interest In The Unpredictable

The Interest in the Unpredictable: A unique study that is equally as gorgeous as it is surprising // By SummerHouse Interior Designer Elish Moon

When we first saw pictures of a study that SummerHouse | Ridgeland Designer Elish Moon recently completed, we were blown away! Not only was it a stunning space, but it was so unexpected! It’s not every day that we see a deep green velvet sofa, deep green walls, and pops of warm spice. We were enamored, so we got Elish to share a little bit more about this lovely design! (Disclaimer: These are cell phone pictures. We hope to get some better ones done very soon! But the space is still stunning!)

I worked with them first as an assistant and then as a designer. While this couple had a beautiful home we had done by the water, they moved to a slightly smaller, easier to manage residence in their retirement. Although their previous home was absolutely beautiful, this new home was cleaner, brighter, and more modern. They wanted the design direction to reflect that. While the entire home is light, bright and airy, the husband wanted one space to still capture the warmer, cozy, richer feel of their previous home… and occasionally escape from boisterous grandchildren! This second level bonus room-turned-study was our one room to depart our white color scheme and go for something rich and bold. Together we chose the beautiful Benjamin Moore Narragansett Green for the walls. His love of books is evident in this space and they became a focal point as he crafted bookshelves to fit his needs by hand. The very narrow footprint was a challenge but really ended up working in our favor. We were able to line the walls with shallow shelving and order an apartment length sofa in a perfectly coordinated velvet. Although this room was somewhat of an afterthought, it became one of our favorite rooms as elements seamlessly fell into place. I’m hoping they can spend many hours in this room enjoying their well deserved retirement!”
