Naturally Chic

You may remember several months back when we went on a social media posting frenzy about the beautiful Atlanta Homes and Lifestyles show house that Lisa got to be a part of! Lisa designed the upstairs lounge in this magnificent home:

“Architect Yong Pak of Pak Heydt & Associates and builder Michael Ladisic of Ladisic Fine Homes transformed a James Means-designed home in the heart of Buckhead in its Kingswood neighborhood. The six-bedroom home is sited on 2 acres of land on top of a hill in quiet cul de sac, overlooking a preserve and recreational fields (read: no rear neighbors!). Charleston-inspired cobblestone and brick driveway, heart of pine floors, slate roof.”

Now that the issue with the showhouse feature is out, we can share the room with you! Here’s the spread:

We recently added a charming little vignette to our Ridgeland showroom from the new Bungalow Classic collection for Highland House that we are more than in love with!

“The BUNGALOW CLASSIC duo Randy and Courtney Tilinski, also known as “Mr. and Mrs. Bungalow”, bring their design talents and signature style to their new BUNGALOW CLASSIC COLLECTION for HIGHLAND HOUSE. Meet SummerHouse | Ridgeland Designer Lana Pate

Meet Interior Designer Lana Pate! // www..alwayssummerblog.comWe are so excited to introduce y’all to our newest designer at SummerHouse | Ridgeland! Her name is Lana Pate and she is such a perfect addition to our team. We love this girl, and we think you will too. Get to know her a little better with this quick Q&A!

What got you interested in the Interior Design field?

One of my mother’s best friends was a decorator as I was growing up.  Our families spent a lot of time together.  I loved being around her amazing and never ending energy.  It was impressive watching her make “something” out of “nothing”.  She encouraged me at an early age to pursue my talents and dreams, and she remained a mentor to me throughout my career.

How would you describe your personal taste in design?

My personal taste is much like my personality – colorful!  I decorate my home the same way I advise my clients to design theirs – by surrounding myself with things I love.  I love original art with bold bright colors.  I also have a huge obsession for luxurious fabrics. Velvet being my most favorite!  Did I mention I love gold?  A girl’s got to have a little bling in her world.  My decor is classic with a dose of French and pops of color.

What is your favorite day to spend a day off?

I like to spend my day off by sleeping in then meeting my sister for a delicious lunch at one of our local restaurants.  In the afternoon, I like to go see a movie alone.  It’s a different experience going to the cinema alone versus with family/friends.  When I’m alone, I can completely immerse myself in the story and escape reality for a couple of hours.  I like to end my day with a long hot bath and a good book.

What’s the best movie you’ve seen recently and why?

Since I literally go almost every week, it’s hard to narrow the field.  Though it’s been a few months, The Light Between Oceans had a profound effect on me.  The story and the characters were very complex.  It was an incredibly sad movie (book), but I could sympathize with each character’s plight.  I pretty much cried the entire time.

What is your favorite source of design inspiration?

My go to source has always been magazines such as Veranda, Traditional Home, Architectural Digest, etc.  I think I started subscribing to Traditional Home when I was 13.  But I also enjoy letting art inspire me.  If I hit a “block” on a project, I’ll head to a local art gallery.  It never fails to get my creativity flowing again

How do you take your caffeine?

My daily dose is unsweetened tea.  But my favorite is Dr. Pepper (preferably in a can).  Sadly, I consider those treats these days!

What is your favorite part of being in the Summerhouse family so far?

I’m loving being surrounded by so much creative energy.  I enjoy how everyone just seems to feed off one another.  It’s fun to see others’ projects and design styles.  And it’s nice to have sounding boards sometimes.

Thank you, Lana! Welcome to the SummerHouse fam! 🙂

30A Living

30A Living

We have a new book in the shop that leaves us absolutely smitten. This new book, called 30A Living, is compiled by talented duo Lynn Nesmith and Jean Allsopp, and highlights the beauty and charm of the magnificent strip of Florida beach towns known as 30A. The homes in these beach towns are as equally magnificent as the beaches on which they are nestled.

30A Living available at summerhousestyle.com

We got to chat with both Lynn and Jean about how this book came together and learned so much! Writer Lynn and photographer Jean found each other when they worked together at Southern Living earlier in their careers and have continued a friendship from there. We are so glad they remained friends and started putting books together because their books are GORGEOUS! 30A Living is a follow up to 30A Style, which was a book that was so popular, it got reprinted three times and sold out every time.

Because of the success of 30A Style, 30A Living just seemed like a natural follow-up. Same beach towns, same staff, but larger format, different homes, and more pages! “We wanted all of the various 30A communities to be represented, as well as a variety of styles. Contemporary, cottagey, traditional. I like the mix that ended up in the book,” says Lynn.

“The biggest challenge with this book was choosing which photos to include to have the best mix of styles,” Jean adds.

When we asked Lynn what she hoped readers of this book walked away with, she told us, “I hope readers get design ideas and get inspired. Even if you can’t build homes like the ones we show, hopefully you can still at least get great ideas. I love 30A, and the people who vacation here love it too. It was a joy to get to highlight all of the different communities and how different they all are.”

It is a joy to us to flip through each page of this book, one by one, devouring the stunning detail of each of the featured homes. Jean and Lynn, y’all did a BEAUTIFUL job! Every word and every photo are top notch!

Beachy Bold

We are big fans of a coastal-inspired space, since coast equals beach, and beach equals summer! (We aren’t called SummerHouse for nothin!)

We also love when a bold velvet has the opportunity to enter the scene.

Absolute design magic happens when beachy and bold come together seamlessly, creating a livable, unexpected, totally gorgeous room! That’s exactly what happened in the guest room of one of Lisa’s favorite clients, who was in need of an update.

That big blue velvet and that serene Lynn Sanders painting on a canvas of white walls and white bedding just created the happiest vibe! We also love the feel of the herringbone rug, textured side tables, and stunning blue lamps! The shell mirror, made by the client herself, adds just the right amount of authentic beachiness to the room.

This client’s guests are sure to feel right at home when they get the opportunity to spend a night or two in this happy space!

We hope you’re enjoying the end of your summer and taking it all in before school starts back!

Wild About Wallpaper

Wallpaper. We love it! It’s a fun way to add interest to a space, large or small. A full room, an accent wall, on the back of a bookshelf… We love both subtle and bold. It’s just so versatile! We’ve used our share of wallpapers, wall coverings, and hand painted wall stencils to add interest to some of our favorite spaces to get them juuuuust right. Here’ proof that wallpaper (and wall stenciling) is EVERYTHING!

Can you tell which two photos are hand painted wall stencils? If you guessed the last two photos, you are correct! Lisa designed each of the rooms in which the hand painted stencils were used, and they could not have turned out prettier! Those rooms (well, all of them actually!) are proof that hiring a designer is SO worth it. Trained interior designers understand scale and color and can get your walls exactly how they should be.

Updated Classics

Great interior design is an investment. There is no doubt about that! And we all know that the wisest investments are the ones that will take us the furthest. That’s why SummerHouse style is such a worthwhile investment! We love to pick pieces that we have heard best described as “modern, traditionally speaking.” This simply means that we pick classic pieces that are updated to meet the standards of today’s style! Our pieces will last you well into the coming years without losing an ounce of style. In this edition of Web Store Wish List, we’ve picked out a few of our favorite updated classics!

Meet Our Intern Emily Simmering

Last week you met Katie Coit, our summer intern from Mississippi State University. Today we want you to meet Emily Simmering from Mississippi College! Emily is so much fun! We hope you get the chance to meet her before her stint with us is complete!

Let’s get on to a quick Q&A with her.SummerHouse Interior Design Intern Emily Simmering

Tell us about yourself!

I’m Emily Simmering and I am from Gulf Breeze, FL which is a small town next to Pensacola Beach. I currently go to Mississippi College. I am the youngest of three with an older brother and older sister. My family and I are really close and family is everything to me. I absolutely love art, and painting with watercolor is my favorite.

What made you want to go into Interior Design?

Growing up I always loved art but never thought about interior design until my senior year of high school. That year, my mom and dad bought their dream home but it was an older home and needed to be redone. During that time I was able to see the design process and help with the finish selections and that is when I fell in love with the Interior Design process.

What place in the world have you visited that left you most inspired to design?

A place that has inspired me most in design is actually my hometown. Gulf Breeze is located in between Pensacola and Pensacola Beach, which have two completely different styles. Downtown Pensacola is influenced by the French culture with a lot of exposed brick and restored wood. I love how Gulf Breeze goes from the French influence of Pensacola to the beachy design of Pensacola Beach to everything in between. It is a good showcase of the many different design styles out there.

What Interior Design class has been your favorite and why?

It is hard to determine which class has been my favorite so far… It is between hand rendering or Interior Design Two. Hand rendering really made me think outside the box and let me use my artist background. Interior Design Two focused on residential design and I was able to see the whole process and take a project from beginning to the end. Both were really fun.

Where do you see yourself ten years from now?

I have no idea where I’ll be in ten years but I do know I want to be in residential design. I would love to work with a company like SummerHouse and eventually have my own firm. But I do know I want to be on the coast somewhere! Not positive where just yet, but I know I can’t be away from the beach for too long!

/ / / / / / / / / /

Emily, you are making us want to plan a trip to Gulf Breeze and go back to design school all at once! Thank you so much for sharing! We love having ya around 😉

Long Distance Design

This design project was done without the clients and the designer ever meeting face to face! Incredible! // alwayssummerblog.com

Designer Elish Phares Moon recently wrapped up a design project in Texas after a long distance working relationship with her clients, whom she has never before met face to face! This project is so interesting because it shows us what fabulous designers, understanding clients, great communication, and a great delivery team can accomplish! We asked Elish to share a little more about the project and how it worked because we are just so darn impressed with how it all turned out!

“In December of 2016, I had an inquiry about design services and potential work with some clients in Spring Valley, Texas. This young couple had just purchased their dream home and had budgeted for working with a designer to nail down the look they wanted in their main rooms. Focusing on the dining room, living room, and master bedroom, we discussed design direction in depth and committed to a tight timeline. Because the couple wanted to be able to move in to completely furnished rooms by their closing date, I brainstormed the initial design scheme with Lisa Palmer, SummerHouse’s owner and principal designer, to speed up the process. (I got my start at SummerHouse as her assistant before moving on to a full time designer.) She and I work well together and were able to streamline the couple’s vision into a beautiful and functional design for their young family quickly.”

The key to working with a client long-distance is transparency and communication. We put together a detailed presentation packet complete with samples and swatches that were clearly labeled. Two of my strengths are organization and communication, so I actually really enjoy working on out-of-
state projects! Our clients asked detailed questions and gave us great feedback. After a few minor changes we got everything on order and began our countdown until the install! Thanks to understanding clients dedicated to quality design, trusted vendors, an experienced delivery team, and a little patience, this project evolved into a finished design that I take pride in and that my clients enjoy!”

Beautiful job, Elish! Such a great result. We love seeing a good, challenging design project come to completion! 🙂

Meet Our Intern Katie Coit

We are SO lucky up here this summer! Not only do we have one great intern at our Ridgeland shop, but we have two fabulous interns! Emily Simmering and Katie Coit have done an amazing job of getting new project binders organized, getting fabric samples neatly folded, and doing research on upcoming projects among other things!

Today, we want you to meet Katie! This cute girl has been so much fun to get to know, so we want you to get the chance to get to know her too! She might even be along on a home visit or two with some of our designers, so heads up! 🙂

SummerHouse Interior Design Intern Katie CoitTell us a little about yourself!

I grew up in Flowood, MS, and I graduated from Jackson Preparatory School in 2013.  I will be returning to Mississippi State University in the fall to complete my final year in the Interior Design program!

What made you want to go into Interior Design?

When I was growing up, I always loved and appreciated aesthetically pleasing spaces and how they made me feel.  I liked to study buildings and rooms by how they were constructed, designed, decorated, etc. I decided during my senior year of high school that I wanted to pursue a career in Interior Design so that I could create living and work environments that would make people enjoy their surroundings.

What’s your favorite publication to go to for design inspo and why?

I have acquired quite the magazine collection over the years with subscriptions to Veranda, Interior Design Magazine, Architectural Digest, and others. I tear out pages from the magazines that inspire me and put them in a journal I started in high school. I also spend my spare time on Houzz and Pinterest.

How would you describe your personal design style?

My design style is full of neutral colors…. My friends love to comment on the rare occasion where I end up wearing color or selecting something that has color on it (I blame years of shopping at Limited Too when I was younger for my phobia of colors.) I love spaces and pieces that are timeless. I also love for my spaces to be clean and organized. So, I guess you should imagine a white room with timeless furniture and everything in its place, and you would have my style in a nutshell.

What Interior Design class has been your favorite and why?

In our studio class last fall, we were all assigned different countries to research and design a restaurant for.  We had a day where we had to bring in a dish from our country and share with the class what we researched and how it impacted the design of our restaurant. My partner and I were given Japan, and we created a contemporary sushi bar based off of an old castle in Osaka, Japan.

So fun, Katie! No wonder we like you so much 🙂
Stay tuned for an interview with Emily coming soon! And thanks for stopping by today! We hope you had the BEST weekend!
