Meet Our Intern Katie Coit

We are SO lucky up here this summer! Not only do we have one great intern at our Ridgeland shop, but we have two fabulous interns! Emily Simmering and Katie Coit have done an amazing job of getting new project binders organized, getting fabric samples neatly folded, and doing research on upcoming projects among other things!

Today, we want you to meet Katie! This cute girl has been so much fun to get to know, so we want you to get the chance to get to know her too! She might even be along on a home visit or two with some of our designers, so heads up! 🙂

SummerHouse Interior Design Intern Katie CoitTell us a little about yourself!

I grew up in Flowood, MS, and I graduated from Jackson Preparatory School in 2013.  I will be returning to Mississippi State University in the fall to complete my final year in the Interior Design program!

What made you want to go into Interior Design?

When I was growing up, I always loved and appreciated aesthetically pleasing spaces and how they made me feel.  I liked to study buildings and rooms by how they were constructed, designed, decorated, etc. I decided during my senior year of high school that I wanted to pursue a career in Interior Design so that I could create living and work environments that would make people enjoy their surroundings.

What’s your favorite publication to go to for design inspo and why?

I have acquired quite the magazine collection over the years with subscriptions to Veranda, Interior Design Magazine, Architectural Digest, and others. I tear out pages from the magazines that inspire me and put them in a journal I started in high school. I also spend my spare time on Houzz and Pinterest.

How would you describe your personal design style?

My design style is full of neutral colors…. My friends love to comment on the rare occasion where I end up wearing color or selecting something that has color on it (I blame years of shopping at Limited Too when I was younger for my phobia of colors.) I love spaces and pieces that are timeless. I also love for my spaces to be clean and organized. So, I guess you should imagine a white room with timeless furniture and everything in its place, and you would have my style in a nutshell.

What Interior Design class has been your favorite and why?

In our studio class last fall, we were all assigned different countries to research and design a restaurant for.  We had a day where we had to bring in a dish from our country and share with the class what we researched and how it impacted the design of our restaurant. My partner and I were given Japan, and we created a contemporary sushi bar based off of an old castle in Osaka, Japan.

So fun, Katie! No wonder we like you so much 🙂
Stay tuned for an interview with Emily coming soon! And thanks for stopping by today! We hope you had the BEST weekend!

When we asked our design staff about their favorite bedroom wall colors, their picks were split between light & airy and dark & cozy! We love every single pick, so we’re bringing you the dark picks today and will share the lighter picks with you next week, so stay tuned!

SummerHouse Owner and Lead Designer Lisa Palmer has Benjamin Moore Onyx in her own bedroom and adores the coziness that the color provides.

SummerHouse | Ridgeland design assistant Krystle Short loves colors in the deep green family. “I am infatuated with deep, sultry greens right now! Narrangansett Green and Newburg Green, both by Ben Moore, are fabulous examples of how one can introduce rich, soothing color without overwhelming a space.”

Meet The Oxford Team: Olivia Weeks

SummerHouse Oxford Interior Designer Olivia WeeksWith our Oxford store opening REALLY SOON (like, next week!), we wanted to start introducing you to the friendly faces you’ll find when you visit SummerHouse Oxford! Olivia Weeks will be an Interior Designer at the new location and we just know y’all will love her. She is so talented and so much fun! Find out a little more about this talented chick with this little Q&A!

Tell us a little about you! Where you’re from, where you live, about your family…

I just usually say I am from Jackson, Mississippi when people ask me that question! I’ve lived in many places throughout the metro-Jackson area. I’ve lived in Madison, Mississippi the majority of my life, but I did spend a year in the Belhaven area after college round one, and now my family is currently living out in the Reservoir area. I currently live in Oxford, Mississippi; I study social work at Ole Miss and I am hoping to pursue humanitarian aid efforts in the future. I have a sweet two-year-old daughter, Ryann; she is my love and my life.

Tell us a little about your design background! Education, experience, all that good stuff…

I have a Bachelor of Science degree from Southern Mississippi in interior design. Prior to joining the Summerhouse team, I worked for a local marketing agency for over a year after college and then for Ethan Allen for a little over a year after that, before deciding to take a huge leap of faith and go back to school to pursue another degree.

Give us the number one reason you’re excited to be a part of the SummerHouse team!

I am excited to be apart of a team that truly loves what they do everyday. Working for Lisa Palmer is amazing; she is an inspiring designer and someone that I think all the designers at Summerhouse should emulate in their designs. She is dedicated to being a great designer and professional and really wants to give her clients the best quality work they deserve. I am so incredibly excited to get started and thankful to her for giving me this opportunity to help her grow her new Oxford, Mississippi location.

SummerHouse Oxford Interior Designer Olivia WeeksWhat is your favorite design publication?

Architectural Digest; I love architecture, and I love the story that architectural details can tell about a place. There are always creative and innovative designs in that magazine and wonderful stories about how these designers created these spaces and what inspired them most. As a designer, this is something I really enjoy doing; finding a neat architectural detail in a space and really bringing it alive through interior design.

What’s the best movie you’ve seen recently and why?

Since I have a two-year-old, going to the movie theater is really out of the question these days, so right now I am watching movies at home. Most recently, I watched “Contact”; I believe it was released in 1997, so it is a little dated, but I love how determined Jodie Foster’s character is about her research. And who knows, maybe we are not the only ones out here in the Universe. I do also want to go see this new movie “Allied” with Marion Cotillar and Brad Pitt over the holidays; I might be able to break away for that one at some point.

What is your favorite local restaurant and why?

Bravo! I never get to go, but the pasta is so yum; I go every year, New Year’s Eve, and then its back to the grind New Year’s Day.

What else do we need to know about you?

As I have gotten older, I see myself becoming more and more obsessed with everything being in its place. If things are moved, I get the slightest bit of anxiety these days. I love reading and I am a huge advocate for reading a book over watching television; I believe that reading and staying educated are important aspects of life and being successful, and journaling seems to help this as well. I enjoying working out and running. I’m running my first half marathon in January; I am excited and nervous at the same time, but I try to keep to the course and maintain a constant training schedule.

/ / / / / / / / / /

Thank you so much, Olivia, for letting us learn a little more about you. So excited to have you on the Oxford team! We know you’ll do a wonderful job!

Inside The Orange Box: Our Favorite Grays

When it comes to paint colors, one of the safest shades you can pick is a beautiful gray. The right gray goes with almost everything! It’s also a great coordinating color to pair with whites, other neutrals, and even some bolder colors! But grays can be tricky, so you’ll want to consult a professional first if you’re even the least bit unsure of your pick!

Our designers and design staff weigh in on their personal favorite gray paint colors! Let’s see what they picked!

The best paint colors with gray undertones // www.alwayssummerblog.com

INTERIOR DESIGNER LISA PALMER’S PICKS:

“My favorite gray paint color is Sherwin Williams Agreeable Gray. I have used it on floors and walls when I need a light warm gray. It is sort of a creamy gray and pairs well with a soft white such as Ben Moore White Dove.”

“My favorite dark gray paint color is Benjamin Moore Iron Mountain. When I need a jolt of rich smokey gray, I turn to this one. It is dark, so be prepared for a moody space.”

Inside The Orange Box: Favorite Celebrity Designers, Part 1

In this edition of Inside The Orange Box, we asked our designers to talk about their favorite celebrity designers! Their feedback is brilliant, as always! Here’s what they have to say…

Interior Designer Camille Parker

“My favorite celebrity designer hasn’t always been the same, but as my style evolves so does my go-to designer for inspiration. However, for the last few years and currently, Kelly Wearstler is my favorite. She is edgy but does not compromise her style choices for trends, making sure her designs are classic. She uses only the best finishes and materials, so her designs are always fresh and enviable!”

Inspiring Celebrity Designers: Kelly Wearstler // www.alwayssummerblog.com

Inspiring Celebrity Designers: Kelly Wearstler // www.alwayssummerblog.com

Interior Designer Katherine Shelton

“I have many favorite celebrity designers but one that currently comes to mind would have to be Nate Berkus.  I am inspired by his design with the way he mixes so many finishes and textures in one room to create such a unique feeling.  I also am so intrigued by the tones he chooses to design a room with.  I love his eclectic style.  In all of his rooms you can normally find antiques mixed with vintage and new furniture and accessories.  I am such a fan of designing a space with blacks, whites, and neutral tones accented with bold saturated color.”

Inspiring Celebrity Designers: Nate Berkus // www.alwayssummerblog.com

Interior Designer Mary Courtney Johns

“It is difficult to name a designer that is my favorite being that there are so many intelligent and inspirational creative people out there! If I was to name a person whose work I most love and someone who I look up to it would be Windsor Smith. She is daring in her choices but at the same time is successful at mixing in traditional pieces with offbeat, bold punches.”

Inside The Orange Box: Home Bars We Adore

30
OCTOBER
2015

With this time of year ringing in the most festive of seasons, we thought we’d celebrate by sharing some of our designers’ favorite home bar photos! They were asked to submit photos of bars that inspired them and to tell why. We love what they picked!

INTERIOR DESIGNER ELISH PHARES MOON

The bar setup below just makes me so happy! It is fresh, cheerful, and looks like it actually gets used. The clean brass design mixed with the greenery and fresh produce is spot on. Can we say brunch cocktail?

SummerHouse designers' favorite home bars // www.alwayssummerblog.com

INTERIOR DESIGNER CAMILLE HOLLAND PARKER

I love this bar cart because it is ideal for a smaller space or for someone who doesn’t always need a bar accessible. The accessories are clean and do not clutter the bar, giving the essentials plenty of room to shine!

SummerHouse designers' favorite home bars // www.alwayssummerblog.com

INTERIOR DESIGNER TODD PRINCE

I love the bar cart we have in our own home! We use it every night. It’s acrylic, so it’s really cool without having too much visual weight. And who doesn’t love enjoying a cocktail prepared at such a fun “work station?!”

SummerHouse designers' favorite home bars // www.alwayssummerblog.com

INTERIOR DESIGNER LINDSEY TOWNSEND

I love how this beautiful sideboard has been transformed into a functional bar, just by simply topping it with a tray.  This can be done with any console table, buffet, or credenza. Place your bottles, decanters, and a few glasses on the tray.  Store the rest of the essentials inside the piece of furniture.

SummerHouse designers' favorite home bars // www.alwayssummerblog.com

INTERIOR DESIGNER MARY COURTNEY JOHNS

Being that I like my surroundings to be visually clean, I love that with this setup you have the option to close the doors when not imbibing! The glasses and bottles are kept organized and easily accessible. The aqua lacquer and brass base and hardware only add a splash of fun to this inviting piece!

SummerHouse designers' favorite home bars // www.alwayssummerblog.com

INTERIOR DESIGNER KATHERINE SHELTON

What I love most about this home bar is that it does not look like a home bar!  A table and counter stools placed in front of clean custom mill work that is outfitted with a mirrored back and glass shelves to house all of your shiney bar essentials. Then surrounded with built ins that are just filled with a mix of beautiful old and new books. I also really love the stark white and caramel color palate.  Blends perfectly with the color of fine whiskey and scotch!

Inside The Orange Box: Favorite White and Light Neutral Paint Colors

Inside The Orange Box this week, we’re talking about paint colors! Choosing a paint color seems to give most people more anxiety than almost anything when it comes to interior design! Our designers weigh in on their favorite white and neutral paint colors to hopefully help reduce the stress commonly associated with the topic!

SummerHouse Designers' favorite white and neutral paint colors // www.alwayssummerblog.com

Inside The Orange Box: How To Make A Bed, Part 2

21
AUGUST
2015

We gave you part one last week, so today we give you part two of this Orange Box topic: Our designers’ favorite ways to make a bed!

DESIGNER TODD PRINCE

“I think bedding should be super practical. You have to be able to clean it! I love a coverlet with a duvet folded at the foot of the bed. That allows your bedding to be changed out with the seasons, since we need to be able to do that here in the South! On a king bed, I love doing two king size pillows against the headboard with 3 euroshams in front. I’m all about practicality, texture, and color. I love a pretty and functional bed!”

SummerHouse Designers' Favorite Ways to Make A Bed // www.alwayssummerblog.com

DESIGNER CAMILLE HOLLAND

“My favorite way to make a bed usually starts with crisp white bedding and a white coverlet, while using a neutral soft patterned fabric for euros or accent pillows! Simple and classic!”

SummerHouse Designers' Favorite Ways to Make A Bed // www.alwayssummerblog.com

DESIGNER LINDSEY TOWNSEND

“I like to keep an overall clean and simplistic look, definitely not too over done.  I love accent fabrics, so if I use a really bold pattern fabric as a large lumbar across the front, I will use fairly simple euro shams behind the lumbar to balance it out. I tend to use euro shams most often because I like the height they give (unless the headboard is very low, then I will use standard shams.) Also, I like always having something at the foot of the bed. It can be a folded duvet, throw, or bed scarf. Layers of texture and soft pattern can help create a most inviting environment!”

DESIGNER KATY HINES

“I always start with whites for the basics like coverlets, sheets, etc. It’s fresh, crisp, and relaxing. Then I layer color and texture in the accent pillows and throws to tie in with the paint, art, and accessories.”

Currently, I am really into a new introduction from Harlequin- Makrana 110914.  Its a Faux Bois print and is absolutely beautiful in every color way.”

Mary Courtney is our newest designer (she was formerly Lisa’s assistant!) and is doing such a great job in her new SummerHouse role! She’s a very talented designer and such a sweetheart on top of that! Without any further delay, let’s get to some Q&A!

What project have you been most excited about working on lately?

The project I have been most thrilled about lately is a living room on a lake in Madison. This space has tons of natural light pouring in and open views of the homeowner’s beautiful pool and the lake behind. The client has an existing rug ottoman that she wanted to take color inspiration from to drive the direction of the rest of the furnishings in the room. The color scheme is made up of deep charcoal brown, wheat, and warm gray, with accents of terracotta in the form of pillows. These colors are represented in an array of different textures from a thick, nubby weave on a pair of sofas to a worn leather on a swivel chair and pillows incorporating linen and velvet. Although this house is the client’s main home, it is essentially a lake house so the space needed to stay casual and livable. I incorporated a few refined touches since this is the only indoor living area in the home to have a good mix of formality and comfort. Every detail of this project mirrors my own tastes and how I want a living room to feel. I always strive to bring out the homeowner’s personality and desires while incorporating my design knowledge, but in this instance, my client and her space was exactly matched to my aesthetic!

What commercial space has most inspired you in the past few months as far as the feel/atmosphere/aesthetic? What about that space made such an impression on you?

Saltine in Fondren is actually really inspiring. It invites you in to sit and stay a while. I love when fun details are incorporated into a commercial space, cue the octopus decal on the wall serving itself up a Tabasco laden oyster. It dictates how people should behave and exemplifies a certain air of relaxation. The rustic chairs, park bench style banquettes, and aged wood floors also play their part in the carefree nature of this restaurant. The beauty of the tile detail at the oyster bar has an attraction similar to the inside of an oyster shell mimicking the iridescence through the tile work. I could go on and on!

Do you have any design projects going on at your own home right now? If so, can you tell us a little about them?!

I usually have a watercolor painting or a sewing project in the works at home but with a husband and a 16 month old, time is limited these days!

Has there been a color that’s really been grabbing you lately?

Coral! It’s not red and it’s not pink. It is versatile and complements a vast range of colors. It’s both juvenile and sophisticated depending on the application.

What do you most love about being a designer?

Being that I have always had a close relationship with art and hands-on projects, designing is my outlet for creativity. I am able to get lost in the search for fabrics and furnishings that are just the right fit for any certain space. The addition of small but meaningful details excites me like putting the final touches on a watercolor painting! Working with clients keeps my work from being redundant and molds my aesthetic into what is most needed within their spaces so I am constantly challenging my personal tastes.
