Designer Of The Week: Mary Courtney Johns

22
MAY
2015

We are kicking off a new, ongoing series where every week or two, we highlight one of our amazing interior designers! We’re excited for you to get to know them just a little better, find out what is inspiring them, and what projects they have going on!

Our very first Designer of the Week is Mary Courtney Johns!

SummerHouse Designer of the Week: Mary Courtney Johns // www.alwayssummerblog.com

Mary Courtney is our newest designer (she was formerly Lisa’s assistant!) and is doing such a great job in her new SummerHouse role! She’s a very talented designer and such a sweetheart on top of that! Without any further delay, let’s get to some Q&A!

What project have you been most excited about working on lately?

The project I have been most thrilled about lately is a living room on a lake in Madison. This space has tons of natural light pouring in and open views of the homeowner’s beautiful pool and the lake behind. The client has an existing rug ottoman that she wanted to take color inspiration from to drive the direction of the rest of the furnishings in the room. The color scheme is made up of deep charcoal brown, wheat, and warm gray, with accents of terracotta in the form of pillows. These colors are represented in an array of different textures from a thick, nubby weave on a pair of sofas to a worn leather on a swivel chair and pillows incorporating linen and velvet. Although this house is the client’s main home, it is essentially a lake house so the space needed to stay casual and livable. I incorporated a few refined touches since this is the only indoor living area in the home to have a good mix of formality and comfort. Every detail of this project mirrors my own tastes and how I want a living room to feel. I always strive to bring out the homeowner’s personality and desires while incorporating my design knowledge, but in this instance, my client and her space was exactly matched to my aesthetic!

SummerHouse Designer of the Week: Mary Courtney Johns // www.alwayssummerblog.com

What commercial space has most inspired you in the past few months as far as the feel/atmosphere/aesthetic? What about that space made such an impression on you?

Saltine in Fondren is actually really inspiring. It invites you in to sit and stay a while. I love when fun details are incorporated into a commercial space, cue the octopus decal on the wall serving itself up a Tabasco laden oyster. It dictates how people should behave and exemplifies a certain air of relaxation. The rustic chairs, park bench style banquettes, and aged wood floors also play their part in the carefree nature of this restaurant. The beauty of the tile detail at the oyster bar has an attraction similar to the inside of an oyster shell mimicking the iridescence through the tile work. I could go on and on!

Do you have any design projects going on at your own home right now? If so, can you tell us a little about them?!

I usually have a watercolor painting or a sewing project in the works at home but with a husband and a 16 month old, time is limited these days!

Has there been a color that’s really been grabbing you lately?

Coral! It’s not red and it’s not pink. It is versatile and complements a vast range of colors. It’s both juvenile and sophisticated depending on the application.

SummerHouse Designer of the Week: Mary Courtney Johns // www.alwayssummerblog.com

What do you most love about being a designer?

Being that I have always had a close relationship with art and hands-on projects, designing is my outlet for creativity. I am able to get lost in the search for fabrics and furnishings that are just the right fit for any certain space. The addition of small but meaningful details excites me like putting the final touches on a watercolor painting! Working with clients keeps my work from being redundant and molds my aesthetic into what is most needed within their spaces so I am constantly challenging my personal tastes.

Thanks, Mary Courtney! Stay tuned for another Designer of the Week coming soon!

The SummerHouse Bay at Mistletoe Marketplace

06
NOVEMBER
2014

‘Tis the season for Mistletoe Marketplace, Jackson’s official kickoff to the holiday season! As we have done the past several years, SummerHouse designed one of the entrances to the shopping part of the event, and it turned out beautifully!! Lisa and Marty, the brains behind the operation, went in the direction of a woman’s study with a beautiful, soft color palette. It’s always quite a rush getting our bay ready to go, but always a lot of fun. When you’re ordering pieces from market (which was just a couple of weeks ago!), having custom pieces made, and obsessing over the tiny details, like pencil color (seriously!), like designers do, it’s quite a feat getting everything finished in time! But there’s nothing like a hard deadline to get things happening! 😉

Here are some snapshots of our space… We hope you’ll stop by and take a look if you get to go to Mistletoe this year!

A Visit to ADAC

04
AUGUST
2014

A couple of weeks ago, a group of SummerHouse staff took an overnight field trip to Atlanta to visit ADAC, the Atlanta Decorative Arts Center! ADAC is like a theme park to designers, so naturally, our crew (which consisted of Todd, Tina, Sunny, Jacque, and Lisa) had a fantastic time! It was a first-time visit for most of them, which made the trip extra exciting!

Our Newest Designer!

01
AUGUST
2014

SummerHouse Interior Designer Molly Ferguson // www.alwayssummerblog.comWe are so excited to introduce our newest SummerHouse Interior Designer to you! Her name is Molly Ferguson and we sure are enjoying having her up here! She’s energetic and fun to be around so we’re sure you’ll love her as much as we do!

Let’s get to a little Q&A with Molly so we can all get to know her just a little better…

Tell us a little about yourself. Where you’re from, about your family… You know, all that good stuff!

I grew up in Hattiesburg, MS. I graduated from The University of Southern Mississippi in 2004 with a BS in Interior Design. My husband Jamey and I have lived Flowood area for about nine years now. We have been married for 5 years but have been together for ten. We met at a USM football game and have been together since then. We have one fur baby. Her name is Oolie and she is a Calico cat. Calico cats were actually named after a type of fabric. Calico fabric is a small scaled printed fabric, so I call her my designer cat! I feel very blessed to have Jamey in my life. Not only is he my best friend but he is my rock!

What’s been your favorite thing about SummerHouse in your short time up here so far?

I did my internship with Lisa in 2004. Over the last 9 years I have gained experience in Interior Design and sales and have grown so much as a designer since my internship. My favorite thing about SummerHouse is that I feel like I never left! It’s like an old friend you can go years without seeing and then pick back up right where you left off! I’m very excited to share all the fabulous items and services that SummerHouse offers with my clients and friends.

How (or when) did you first discover your love for interior design?

Ever since I was a kid, I’ve loved design. I would rearrange my room every couple of months. My father owned a paint store when I was young and after it closed he started painting, so I always had access to whatever paint color I wanted. He would mix up custom colors for me! I remember that when I wanted my bedroom lime green, my mother and father were very nervous and hesitant, but they trusted me. It was perfect for a teenager. My design style and passion has evolved a lot since then, though!

How do you take your caffeine?

I like my caffeine in the morning. I usually have 1 or 2 cups of coffee.  And I’m a coffee snob! I like to grind my own beans which are usually flavored. I add a splash of fat free milk and done.

What’s your favorite local restaurant?

Jackson, MS has some of the best restaurants! I can’t pick just one favorite. Jamey and I love eating in downtown Jackson, Belhaven, and Fondren. We try to stay in Jackson and Flowood when we do eat out. I love supporting local restaurants and businesses.

What’s your favorite interiors publication, either print or online?

I love Pinterest. It has the best of all worlds. Every website, magazine, and designers all in one place!

Tell us a little bit about your design philosophy!

I believe that every room in a house should be a favorite and serve a purpose! A kitchen should be sufficient and user friendly. A kitchen is were you bond with your friends, family, and make memories. A living room should be functional and comfortable. A bathroom is a place to wash the stress of the day away and you should feel like you are stepping into a spa. I feel that the bedroom should be an oasis, a place to get away and energize for the next day.

I also believe that the client comes first. I want my clients to enjoy the Interior Design experience. I hope that my knowledge and experience eases any stress a client may have. My number one goal is for the client to be 100% happy and make their visions and needs become reality!

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<

Thank you, Molly! We all look forward to getting to know you even better in the coming months! Thanks for being a part of our team!

One Dreamy Nursery

10
JUNE
2014

Designer Todd Prince recently completed a nursery for a very special little girl that we are so excited to share with you! Nursery design is always so much fun, and we love the direction Todd took with this particular one. We’ll let him tell more about it!

Dreamy Little Girl's Nursery by SummerHouse Designer Todd Prince

Dreamy Little Girl's Nursery by SummerHouse Designer Todd Prince

“The first thing the client said is, “I want it dreamy. I want to walk in and it feel soft and dreamy.”

They wanted it comfortable and light with just a little bit of blush and white. They wanted interesting and open storage, which is why we did the open shelving so it can grow with her, and we did a 3-drawer chest as a changing table that can one day be used more like a dresser as she gets older.”

Dreamy Little Girl's Nursery by SummerHouse Designer Todd Prince

Dreamy Little Girl's Nursery by SummerHouse Designer Todd Prince

“We did a swivel glider chair and ottoman in the room that is comfortable for the mother now, but can also grow with the room as the child gets older. We tried to do things that would work great with the nursery but would also grow along with the child. The only thing that really won’t grow with her is the bed.”

Dreamy Little Girl's Nursery by SummerHouse Designer Todd Prince

“My client never said she wanted floral, but when she said “dreamy” to me, I just kept picturing something that was pale and large scale. That blush colored Mary McDonald large-scale fabric we used for drapery was the impetus for everything that happened in the room.

She did say more than once that she didn’t want the room to feel like a big linen bedroom. She wanted texture but she wanted it light. So we did a washable velvet on the swivel rocker, a hide on the ottoman, which is easily cleanable, a heavyweight linen on the drapery, and the carpet is a very thickly woven continuous loop carpet so it has the look of a lambs wool sweater. I had a local artisan tweak the finish on the Restoration Hardware baby bed, and did a mixture of silver and gold on all of the metal in the room. We mixed lots of texture to create interest.”

Dreamy Little Girl's Nursery by SummerHouse Designer Todd Prince

“I tried to make it as flexible as possible all while keeping it completely dreamy like a baby. The word dreamy kept coming up a million times. That was the only word she could find to describe the way she wanted the room to feel!”

Dreamy Little Girl's Nursery by SummerHouse Designer Todd Prince

“We did an antique venation glass mirror to make the space feel like it had a little age to it, but the art is all modern. We hung the really glossy Bonnie Fuchs paintings with two Sarah Haas Otts paintings salon style so nothing would be too matchy matchy.  To play off the artwork, and to counteract the hide and linen, I needed a little bit of shimmer at the bottom of the bed so we did a Classic Cloth silk bedskirt and used a Samuel & Sons trim for just a little bit of shimmer.”

Dreamy Little Girl's Nursery by SummerHouse Designer Todd Prince

Dreamy Little Girl's Nursery by SummerHouse Designer Todd Prince

“And, most importantly, we left as much room as we could in the middle of the room for her to play!”

We love how it turned out, and Todd’s client loved it too, which is the most important opinion of all! We hope you love this as much as we do!

Inside The Orange Box: Our Favorite Florals

06
JUNE
2014

With florals being such a big fashion trend this season…

Summer 2014 Trends

(image sources here and here)

…we thought we’d get in on the floral fun and share some of our designers’ favorite floral patterns for interior design! For this week’s Inside The Orange Box, our designers choose their favorite floral fabric or wallpaper and tell us what it is about that pattern that they love…

Let’s see what they’ve picked!

Inside The Orange Box // SummerHouse

– Lead Designer Lisa Palmer –

“This Zimmer + Rhode floral would be beautiful as a tailored skirt under a honed marble top as an entry table that had some height so you could see the large scale of the pattern. Finish the top of the skirt with a beautiful flat braid. Gorgeous!”

SummerHouse Interior Designers' Favorite Floral fabrics and wallpapers

– Designer Elish Phares –

“I love how bright and cheerful this Stark pattern is. It makes me happy, and I like how the pattern is not a cliche floral.”

SummerHouse Interior Designers' Favorite Floral fabrics and wallpapers

– Designer Sunny Holliday –

“I love this wall paper from Winfield Thybony! The Iris pattern is expressive and effective, without overpowering. An iris symbolizes eloquence, which shows up in the pattern of this wall covering.”

SummerHouse Interior Designers' Favorite Floral fabrics and wallpapers

– Designer Lindsey Townsend –

“I like that this Groundworks pattern is floral, but a very subtle floral. It looks like it’s painted!”

SummerHouse Interior Designers' Favorite Floral fabrics and wallpapers

– Designer Elizabeth Gullett –

I’m loving this rich Dessin Fournir silk velvet right now!! It has such depth to the color, and the “leaf” design is perfectly abstract. I know it’s going to look fabulous on my client’s dining chairs in the Agate color way! We are doing all of the chairs using different parts of the repeat to further enhance the “natural randomness” of the pattern. When the same “leaf ” is in the exact same spot on five chairs, that makes the pattern loose something for me… it feels too structured. I love it’s free, all-over form and want to embrace that quality.”

SummerHouse Interior Designers' Favorite Floral fabrics and wallpapers

– Designer Katy Hines –

“This pretty Galbraith & Paul pattern is all done by hand and made to order. I love this line because it’s so customizable. You can even get their fabric patterns done in wallpaper!”

SummerHouse Interior Designers' Favorite Floral fabrics and wallpapers

– Designer Todd Prince –

“Generally speaking, to quote quote Austin Powers, floral is not my bag, baby. However, when I do floral, I want to do it in a large scale in a linen fabric that does not overpower the space. When it comes to floral, I’m going to do a two color, big-scale pattern like this Mary McDonald pattern for Schumacher. This room in particular called for this type of floral. I want my florals to be a soft backdrop. The larger the scale, the better a floral looks.”

Walking The Line

21
MAY
2014

Designer Todd Prince was recently tasked with helping a long-time SummerHouse client with his new office! The client wanted his office to sort of walk the line between upscale corporate and residential, so when you see these photos, you might not feel like you’re looking at someone’s workspace! Todd did a great job of meshing hospitable comfort with business-friendly design.

We’ll let Todd tell you a little about what went into the design of this beautiful space!

Walking the Line Between Corporate and Cozy // by Designer Todd Prince // SummerHouse

Walking the Line Between Corporate and Cozy // by Designer Todd Prince // SummerHouse

“He wanted this to feel very residential. Not officey. He wanted guests to his office to feel as if they were coming into their home when they came into the space. We decided to go very rich and warm in color. We went with a very dark kind of slate blue wall and we did that throughout the entire space. We used brown leathers, deep gray linens, metal accents, and used modern art to make it feel very residential.

Walking the Line Between Corporate and Cozy // by Designer Todd Prince // SummerHouse

We wanted to try to accommodate as many people as possible, so in his office, we did a sofa and two chairs. In the conference room, we did a table with six chairs and then two sofas, so he could accommodate as many as 12 people in that room.

Walking the Line Between Corporate and Cozy // by Designer Todd Prince // SummerHouse

We did the horn chair covered in hide for a pop of interest when you walk in the door because he did want it to feel very hip while also teetering the line between office and residential. We chose fabrics and leathers that would wear well over time and we accessorized as minimally as possible.

Walking the Line Between Corporate and Cozy // by Designer Todd Prince // SummerHouse

On the casegood pieces we went a little more old world with worn finishes. We did a Club Cu piece for the bar, which is great because it has plenty of storage. In the conference room he did the big John Richard Adrianna Buffet over which he hung a big TV because the buffet could contain all the components.

We gave him lamp lighting in his office to give him good light, but he was lucky to have an office with two walls of windows. Lots of natural light always makes a space feel comfortable.

Walking the Line Between Corporate and Cozy // by Designer Todd Prince // SummerHouse

We tried to go as residential as we could while also making it as upscale corporate as we could. We kinda tried to walk that line and I really like how it turned out!”

When we asked the client how he liked the end result, he said, “It was the best experience. I love SummerHouse and I love working with Todd. I could not be more pleased with how things turned out!”

Great job, Todd! We agree that it turned out absolutely beautifully!!

Our Newest Designer: Sunny Holliday!

05
MARCH
2014

SummerHouse Interior Designer Sunny HollidayMeet Sunny Holliday! Sunny is our newest Interior Designer and is absolutely a joy to be around! Her name matches her sweet and happy personality just perfectly! 🙂 We have really enjoyed getting to know this girl, and think you will too! As we do with all of our newbies, we interviewed her with some fun, designery questions!

Tell us a little about yourself! Where you’re from, where you went to school, a little about your family…
I am from the Jackson area. I attended high school at MRA. After receiving my Interior Design degree from the University of Southern MS, I moved back to Jackson for an Interior Design internship, and I have been back here ever since. I have been happily married for four years… no kids yet, but my dog, Cotton, is our baby for now 🙂 My adorable nephews are my heart!!

What is your favorite aspect of living in the Jackson area?
There are so many great aspects about living in the Jackson area! Having all of my immediate family and close friends here is definitely the best aspect. Also, attending regular community events, as well as endless shopping and dining experiences are pleasant characteristics of Jackson. I love the fact that there is usually an art show to attend, and often times a great band to be heard. It’s a big city, but a small city! I love that about Jackson. Seeing familiar faces throughout the town always makes me feel at home.

In your short time so far at SummerHouse, are there any fabric or furniture lines that you’ve just absolutely fallen in love with?!
Oh YES!! I am always drawn to beautiful fabrics and wall coverings. Here, at SummerHouse, our library has so many wonderful options for this! My favorite upholstery line is Lee Industries. I have found maximum comfort in this line, along with endless fabric and finish options. It’s a very customizable line. As far as art, Lauren Lachance is my new favorite artist right now. Stop by the showroom to see her amazing work!!

What is your favorite TV show, past or present?
Currently, Modern Family always provides a good laugh. The Today Show &/or Live with Kelly & Michael gets me going in the mornings.  Also, Girls is one of my favorite series out right now. If it’s a week day, and I’m home from 6-7pm, you will always find my TV on the news, followed by Wheel of Fortune!

What’s the best trip you’ve ever taken?
Well, I always love the beach with friends and family!! The best and most recent was a trip to NYC last October. It was just my mom & me for her birthday, and we had a blast! From fine dining to Broadway shows to touring the city and shopping, it was a very memorable and eventful trip that I will never forget!!

How would you describe your personal design style?
My personal design style is clean, modern & light. I love functional and beautiful spaces that are meaningful. From the small accessories to the main focal point of the room, I want every piece to have a purpose! As far as working with my clients, I really listen to them to see what their needs are. From there, I take my personal style, along with aesthetical and practical views, and really give them what they want!

When you are not partaking of your new favorite thing (which of course is working at SummerHouse!) what would you say are your hobbies?
Spending time with my friends and family is my “2nd job”. It’s my life! It keeps me going. Along with that, any vacationing to any beach makes me happy!

What else do we need to know about you?!
I think one of my greatest qualities is that I’m a very positive person! Rarely will you find me complaining, saying no or getting mad. I get over things pretty quickly and don’t like to be angry. So, most of the time, you will find me very cheerful and happy!!

Sunny’s name and her contagiously wonderful attitude work perfectly together! We are so glad to have this girl up here and can’t wait to see her grow as a designer! Next time you’re in the area, be sure to stop in and meet her!

New From Studio Bon!

12
NOVEMBER
2013

We have some exciting posts to bring you later this week recapping a super fun staff party we had over the weekend, Christmas plans, and some beautiful projects by our talented design staff! But since those aren’t ready yet, we wanted to show you a few new intros we’re kind of going crazy over right now…. 🙂

One of our favorite fabric lines, Studio Bon, has come out with some new patterns that we’re just in love with! (And not only do they offer fabrics, but wallcoverings too!!)

The goldy tones get us in the holiday mood for some reason, and the patterns are so fun and different (which Stuio Bon is always good at introducing!)

SUMMERHOUSE LOVES STUDIO BON!

We could see the wallcovering in a powder room or as an accent wall, and the fabrics would be great for headboards, pillow, or anything in between!

Do you love these as much as we do?!
