Inside The Orange Box: Where To Start Designing a Dining Room

25
SEPTEMBER
2015

It’s time for another edition of Inside The Orange Box, where our designers take a moment to talk through common design issues or give little pieces of design advice to you guys! We love picking their minds about specific design-related topics! If you’ve ever got a question you’d like to see our designers’ input on, feel free to comment with your topic idea and we’ll do our best to work it in!

Today’s question is…

When designing a dining room, what do you as a designer find to be the best starting point? What do you pick out first?

INTERIOR DESIGNER LISA PALMER

“When designing a dining room, I usually start with the table. It’s the focal point in the room… usually. In decorating, there are no hard fast rules. So, sometimes I have started with a beautiful gilt mirror and then selected the console for the long wall and so on. The mirror would become the star of the room.”

INTERIOR DESIGNER TODD PRINCE

“With a dining room I love to start out with the rug if one is needed.  That helps establish a stylistic approach and a color palette.”

SummerHouse Interior Designers on Dining Rooms... // www.alwayssummerblog.com

INTERIOR DESIGNER MARY COURTNEY JOHNS

“The light fixture above the table is often times the focal point so I would consider that to be a major decision when designing a dining room. No matter the style that is being aimed for, this component is crucial for setting the tone for the rest of the room. A statement needs to be made!”

SummerHouse Interior Designers on Dining Rooms... // www.alwayssummerblog.com

INTERIOR DESIGNER CAMILLE HOLLAND PARKER

“After the table, of course, I love to start with a beautiful wall covering in a dining room! It is fun and can be applied to walls or unexpectedly to the ceiling! It really elevates the design of the space!”

SummerHouse Interior Designers on Dining Rooms... // www.alwayssummerblog.com

INTERIOR DESIGNER ELISH PHARES MOON

“Dining rooms are fun to design because they don’t have many essentials (dining table, dining chairs, etc…) so there is room, dare I say need, for something bold. There is freedom to design with an unexpected element because formal dining rooms aren’t often used on a daily basis, so wear and tear, neutrality, and practicality aren’t necessarily the driving force. I love to try a rich paint color, a beautiful wall covering, or a bold pattern on drapery. The dining room in itself has the potential to be a homeowner’s best art piece.”

SummerHouse Interior Designers on Dining Rooms... // www.alwayssummerblog.com

INTERIOR DESIGN KATY HINES

“The CHANDELIER!  Lighting can really set the tone for the whole design – dressy, formal, relaxed, informal…  It can also define the style of the room – traditional, modern, or transitional.”

Meet Katherine!

23
SEPTEMBER
2015

We are so thrilled to have interior designer Katherine Shelton back at SummerHouse! She was here for several years, then got married, moved away, had a couple of beautiful boys, and is back in the Jackson area getting right back into her SummerHouse groove! For those of you who don’t have the pleasure of knowing Katherine, here is a quick Q&A to find out a little more about her!

(1) Tell us a little about yourself!SummerHouse Interior Designer Katherine Shelton // www.alwayssummerblog.com

My name is Katherine Gatlin Shelton from Madison, MS. I am married to Rustin Shelton and we have three children together, all boys! We spend most all of our time playing baseball, football, and soccer.

(2) What is your favorite way to spend a day off of work?

Favorite way to spend a day off of work… I like to sleep in, go for a run, and get a mani/pedi!

(3) Why are you most looking forward to being back at SummerHouse?!

I am so excited to be back at Summerhouse! I love working in such a beautiful environment with so much design inspiration everywhere you look.

(4) What is the best movie you’ve seen in the last year or so?

Because I have children, the best movie I have seen in the past year is Disney’s Brave. My boys and I LOVE watching this movie!

(5) How do you take your caffeine?

I like flavored coffees with three creams and one splenda. The flavor I’m really liking right now is Caramel Vanilla!

(6) What is your favorite design publication?

I just love House Beautiful. It is my most favorite go-to magazine when I need some design inspiration or when I have some time to just sit and flip through something.

(7) What’s your favorite local restaurant in the Jackson area?

I love the food and atmosphere of Table 100 in Flowood.

(8) How would you describe your personal design style?

My personal style tends to be very eclectic. I love an old piece of french furniture lacquered a creamy white with funky brass hardware. A piece like that looks great paired up with a light color linen chair, a bold mod print pillow, a clean lined lamp, and a big abstract piece of art. I am always evolving as a designer so my taste tends to change a good bit. My clients’ homes reflect their own tastes, though, rather than my own.

(9) Anything else we need to know about you?!?!

As a designer I love the fulfillment of a very happy client when the job is complete and they love what I have done. It makes this line of work so gratifying!

Designer Of The Week: Todd Prince

07
AUGUST
2015

This week’s Designer of the Week is Todd Prince! We loved hearing about his favorite room to design, how he likes to recharge, and why he loves mixing old and new! Keep on reading!

SummerHouse Designer of the Week : Todd Prince // www.alwayssummerblog.com

1) What is your favorite room in a home to design? What makes designing that room so special?

I love designing any room but lately I’ve started a love affair with dining rooms. I think it’s partly because it’s a room where so many of my personal favorite things come together… family, food, and conversation. Dining rooms used to be just “pretty” rooms that were not often used. That’s not true anymore. Dining rooms are actually used now. Dining rooms are now more often incorporated into the living space making it all one cohesive space instead of distinct rooms. Friends and families gather in them around great food and share actual social conversation with one another. It’s the one room where I think people actually talk. In this world of iPhones, social media, texting, and Facebook the one thing that will make people disconnect from that world is food! There has also been a “food lovers explosion” over the past few years and most of my clients consider themselves “foodies.” I love it!

I love doing great details on dining chairs like slip covering new chairs or slipcovering clients’ existing chairs. On one client recently, I used Belgian linen box pleated slipcovers with silk buttons down the back for a detail. For another client, I used a washed linen dressmaker style slipcover with ties for a more casual look to update some chairs they already had. In my own home, my side chairs are vintage 1950s chairs with classic style parsons chairs as the head chairs covered in a modern Pierre Frey fabric.

I also love using great lighting to set the mood! In my dining room, I have a true vintage George Nelson light fixture. I paired that with a modern acrylic bar cart to give the room a more modern feel.

The dining room is a special room in the home and I love that! I know these photos show a range of style, so this proves my ultimate goal of making the client happy. I’m up for using something they already had and updating it, or starting over with something completely new but detailing it in a way that is special to the client.

The dining room is all about family, friends, and food…..no facebook here!

2) What is your favorite element to include into a design these days?

I love a room to feel collected…not overly designed so lately I have really been trying to incorporate some pieces that my clients already have into their spaces. Sometimes I’ll pull pieces that they have used in one room and in one way for a very long time and refinish or recover it and give it a new life. I am currently working on a new construction project in Oxford MS and we have done that in almost every room. Giving a piece a client really loves new life is always rewarding and very creative.

SummerHouse Designer of the Week : Todd Prince // www.alwayssummerblog.com

3) Can you tell us about your favorite design project to date?

My favorite design project to date…. that’s a hard one. I just completed a mid-century modern new construction project in Eastover and I loved the process. I have been involved in the project for 2 years now and when you invest so much it’s amazing when you see it completed. I am personally drawn to the mid-century style but we put a fresh take on it. I found vintage pieces for these particular clients at market…like the dining table and beautiful lamps and mixed it with more modern pieces for a “fresh” mid century feel. I invested so much of myself into the project that it became very personal to me. The clients were great to work with and we all enjoyed the process. I got to use some of my favorite tricks as well. I painted the entire family room a very dark color (walls, ceiling, and trim), mixed old and new pieces, and used full walls of amazing tile for a great impact. The project was so much fun!

4) What is your favorite environment to refresh your mind and get inspired?

To refresh and recharge myself I go to the water! Just listening to the rolling waves of the ocean helps me to clear my mind and get ready to face the design work again. It’s my happy place! We have a family vacation planned for the week of Thanksgiving to the beach and I can’t wait!

Designer of the Week: Lindsey Townsend

24
JULY
2015

We’re excited to have Lindsey Townsend as our designer of the week! We had a great chat with her about a fun project she’s working on, where she finds her best inspiration, and more!

Designer of the Week: Lindsey Townsend // www.alwayssummerblog.com

1. As a designer, what has most been grabbing your attention lately? A certain color, type of pattern, decor style…?

I love mixing antique pieces with contemporary. I like how collected it can make a home feel. I have also been drawn to anything antique brass, hammered metal, stone table tops, organic patterns, and small touches of acrylic. I have been very inspired lately by emerald greens and deep blue grays.

Designer of the Week: Lindsey Townsend // www.alwayssummerblog.com

2. Tell us about your favorite project you’ve worked on as a SummerHouse designer. What was it that you loved about that project?

I have to say there are many projects and clients I have truly loved working with here at Summerhouse. My favorite project at the moment is a new construction project I am working on. It is on the water in Lost Rabbit. The clients and I have been working together on everything from the ground up. A unique feature of this home is that it has a twenty-two foot Nanawall. This wall will have the capability of opening completely, so that the great room can lead right onto the covered balcony. My clients like to spend a lot of there time outside, so there will be 4 beautiful outdoor areas for them to spend their time lounging and entertaining. The style of this home is a beautiful mix of timeless and contemporary. I can’t wait to see this project completed and installed at the end of the year!

Designer of the Week: Lindsey Townsend // www.alwayssummerblog.com

3. What inspires you most as a designer?

I can find inspiration in anything most times. It can come from a certain fabric, a rug, wall covering, or even a light fixture. But art may inspire me most. A beautiful piece of art can really become an integral part of my entire design scheme. I also draw a lot of inspiration from what other designers around the country are doing, from such publications as Atlanta Homes and Elle Decor.

Designer of the Week: Lindsey Townsend // www.alwayssummerblog.com
4. We’re getting excited about your new home! What project to you plan to tackle first when you get into your new house? Give us a teaser of a future project that you’ll eventually get to if you can!!

Well we are buying a 31 year old home, so having said that… it has amazing character and potential. It just needs a little TLC first! We first plan to update all paint, lighting, and freshen up the landscaping. After that we plan to completely remodel the kitchen and all bathrooms! Finally, once we make it through all that, I plan to redesign our master bedroom. We are very excited to get started.

With spring coming upon us — finally! — we have really been thinking about spending more time outdoors! Outdoor spaces become the setting for casual family dinners, parties, and quality time spent with friends around a fire pit, so why not have them looking their best? Often times, your outdoor space can be seen from inside, which makes it every bit as important for that space to be beautiful! It’s still a part of your interior design even if it isn’t technically interior!

Here are a few pictures of outdoor spaces our designers have done to get you thinking about your own space! Remember that outdoor furniture and fabrics have come such a long way in just a few short years. You’ll be surprised what companies make these days that are intended for outdoor use!

Inside The Orange Box: Favorite Roll Arm Upholstered Styles

For this week’s Inside The Orange Box, we asked a few of our designers what their favorite roll arm style upholstery pieces are, and we LOVE what they came up with! All of the styles they picked are updated yet timeless, which describes the perfect piece of furniture if you ask us!

Designer Todd Prince loves the 1573-41 chair from Lee Industries. He likes how the casters work with the rolled arms!

Jacque is a fan of the Chester sofa by Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams because of its beautifully proportioned button tufting, the pleated roll arm at the same height as the back, the tight seat left untufted for comfort, and the gracefully turned feet in front, all with ferrules. It is a classic looking sofa for just about any room!

Meet Jen!

27
OCTOBER
2014

We have a new face around here to introduce you to! Meet Jen Kadar, our new receptionist! She’s recently taken over the role of greeting people who come into the store as well as keeping things sane at the front desk and with the phones!

Jaclyn, who has moved on to new ventures, left some big receptionist shoes to fill, but Jen seems to be fitting right on in and not missing any beats! We’re so glad to have her here! Since you’ll be seeing a lot of her, it’s probably time for you to get to know her a little better! Let’s get to some questions!

1. Tell us a little about you! Where you grew up, where you went to school, what you studied…

I grew up mainly in West Monroe, LA, went to undergrad at Louisiana Tech University, graduating with a Bachelors of Fine Arts in Photography and a Minor in Architecture. After graduating, I ran away from LA as fast as possible to Nashville, TN. From Nashville, I moved to Glasgow, Scotland to attend the University of Glasgow and graduated with a Master of Letters in 19th Century Art and Design History.

Meet Jen // SummerHouse // www.alwayssummerblog.com2. We hear you’re married to a Scottish guy! How did y’all meet?

When I moved to Glasgow for grad school, I knew ONE person in the whole of Scotland! My roommate Gillian and I had worked at a ranch together in Colorado years before, and she was my Glasgow connection. When I arrived, she was out of town, but left me a list of her friends and their numbers, saying one of them had a car and would take me on a drive through the country… Simon was the guy with the car (and having a car in Glasgow is a BIG deal – I lucked out)! We met the 2nd day I was in Scotland, starting dating 2 weeks later and the rest is history!

3. What is your favorite thing about SummerHouse so far?

Definitely the people. Everyone has been so welcoming! It’s great to be working with a group of talented, creative and fun people. It is also really pleasant to work in a beautiful space surrounded by such pretty things every day!

4. Since you’re new to the Jackson area, what aspect of the city have you been most impressed by?

When my husband and I bought our house, we didn’t realize we were less than a mile from the Reservoir and the Natchez Trace Trails! It’s great to be able to drive down the road and have such a beautiful area to explore. We’ve also started exploring the restaurant and bar scene and it seems like there’s a plethora of great options. I love having a good balance of nature and city!

5. What’s your favorite book or movie and why?

Hmm… it’s hard to choose! For books, my favorites are Jitterbug Perfume by Tom Robbins because he is just beyond brilliant, and The Great Divorce and The Space Trilogy by C.S. Lewis because I love everything that C.S. Lewis has ever written. The way he describes fictional worlds is so beautiful and interesting, I just read his books over and over again and always see something new. For movies, my favorite is Love Song for Bobby Long, which most people have never heard of, but it’s such an honest portrayal of people struggling with their pasts and trying to better themselves.

6. If you could take home one piece of furniture from the showroom floor, which piece would it be?!

I LOVE the grey Whitaker sectional! It’s huge and so comfortable, but also structured and modern with so many beautiful details. I love anything with nail head detailing!

7. What is your favorite holiday? Why?

My favorite holiday is definitely Thanksgiving, because it’s like Christmas without the ulterior motive of presents. It’s just all about family coming together, and that’s when my entire family comes down. I also come from a long line of crazy good cooks, so the food is to die for. Family and food, can’t get any better than that!

8. What else do we need to know about you?!

Well, hmm… I’m kind of a jack of all trades and have dabbled in so many different things. As a kid, I took every different kind of lesson you can think of: dance, gymnastics, tennis, xylophone, swimming, soccer, etc.. Then as I got older, my creative outlet went a million directions: architecture, painting, drawing, photography, jewelry making, graphic design, and even song-writing. My brother and I wrote alot of songs together when I lived in Nashville, and I have a half-finished EP that we started recording with good friends that got interrupted when I moved to Scotland. I played my first and last show in Nashville at my going away party! The past couple of years, my husband and I bought our first home and then relocated to Ridgeland and purchased our second home, so renovating houses has taken up all of my creative energy!

Master Bedroom Masterpiece

08
SEPTEMBER
2014

SummerHouse Interior Designer Elish Phares takes us inside the master bedroom of one of her clients to remind us of just how beautiful simple design can be! We love the tight color palette, clean lines, and all of the natural light! Elish tells us a little bit about what all went into this design!

What did your client say she wanted in this room and what were you working with?

For this room, we pretty much had a fresh start in there! The only thing we worked with was her bed, which she had already purchased from SummerHouse. I got to start basically from scratch in there. We selected paint colors together, which is when I learned that her favorite color in any shape or form is blue. So I knew I needed to include several shades of blue! I had already redone her living room, and her master is right off of her living, so I wanted it to be different but I wanted it to still flow off of her living.

She wanted it to be calm and soothing. I think she and her husband really like to read, so we made a little reading nook for her over in the corner. A big debate for them was whether or not they wanted to keep a TV in the bedroom, but we eventually decided not to, so we ended up with a lot of room for book storage. They can also use their night stands for storage!

Tell us more about working with this client!

She is great to work with! I knew the design would have to involve blue because that’s her favorite. She likes pretty things, but we have to be somewhat practical- we couldn’t do anything too crazy- because her dogs get on everything. Her dogs sleep on the foot of the bed so the bedding, except for the shams and decorative pillow, is washable.

We were trying to create a balance between the bed she already had, which is actually kind of green, and that blue. So that was kinda where the color palette came from. And she’s not overly girly. So that’s why the lamps are a little bit rustic. She’s kind of drawn to reclaimed things sometimes! It ended up being a really nice mix.

How long have you and this client been working together?

We have been working together for about a year now! She’s made several house updates throughout my time working with her. She’s updated finishes, redone her kitchen, redone her floors, painted…. So we are kind of doing interiors as we are going through some of her home updates.

Thanks Elish! So soothing and relaxing… Keep up the good work! 🙂

Bright Blue in the Bedroom

AUGUST
2014

We love incorporating a pop of turquoise into a room whenever we can! This vibrant blue hue is happy, bright, and surprisingly neutral! We particularly love how the color brings these darling bedrooms to life, all designed by our lead designer Lisa Palmer. See if you agree!
