A Moment With Artist May Benton

09
JULY
2014

We recently had the great pleasure of catching up with a very talented artist named May Benton! If you’ve been to SummerHouse recently, you’ve undoubtedly seen her work. It’s simply stunning, and so different! May tells us a little about herself and her work in this quick little interview!

Artist May Benton with her work // www.summerhousestyle.com
Meet May!

1. Tell us about you in a nutshell!

Born and raised in Jackson, MS, I loved growing up in Mississippi and my Southern roots have kept me grounded and inspired throughout my life. After attending JA for elementary and Jackson Prep for high school, I went to the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) where I earned a BFA in Photography and a minor in Art History. After college I moved to California to continue my photographic aspirations and it was in the awe-inspiring city of San Francisco that I met my amazing husband, Matt. We loved living in California but eventually decided to move to Jackson to be closer to family and friends. Fondren has been home to us and our two dogs for the past twelve years.

2. We LOVE your artwork. What is your process called?

My images are created using the photographic process called Mordancage’. This process was invented by the late French photographer, Jean Pierre Sudre, in the 1960s. It is an acid solution consisting of copper chloride, glacial acetic acid and hydrogen peroxide. The process begins by making a photogram using native Mississippi plants and flowers that have been gathered throughout the seasons. Once I have arranged my plant compositon, I process the photogram in my darkroom using standard photographic chemicals. After the print has been fixed and washed, the Mordancage’ process can begin. The acid solution literally “lifts” the silver gelatin from the solid black areas of the photogram and the gelatin can be manipulated in many unique ways. The process leaves behind a striking texture and metallic property unlike any other photographic process.

“Queen Anne’s Lace”

3. Where did you learn about Mordencage’ and why are you passionate about it?

I was taught the Mordancage’ process by Professor Craig Stevens while taking Advanced Black and White Printmaking at SCAD. Professor Stevens studied and mentored under Jean Pierre Sudre for decades. He would translate for Sudre, who could not speak English, during his workshops in the beautiful town of Aix in the south of France. Sudre passed away in 1997 but I did have the pleasure of going to his home and meeting his wonderful wife, Claudine, while attending the SCAD Italy/France summer quarter abroad.

“Peacock #1”

4. Did we hear correctly that you’re one of very few artists in our area who practices this technique?

Yes, the Mordancage’ process has remained pretty exclusive and is not widely practiced as a photographic process. Only a handful of photographers across the world use and teach this unique printmaking technique.

5. What is the most exciting place this work has taken you?

The most exciting place my work has taken me would have to be the SoHo Photo Gallery in New York City. My work has been chosen for several juried shows of Alternative Photography hosted by that inspiring gallery.

"Savannah Song" by May Benton // www.summerhousestyle.com

6. Why did you choose SummerHouse as a showplace for your work?

I chose Summerhouse because of many reasons. I am inspired by interior design and I think that as an artist, having your work displayed alongside interior decor is one of the best ways to connect with the customer. Everyone at Summerhouse is so professional and talented and absolutely wonderful to work with! The store and merchandise are just beautiful and their artwork is the perfect accompaniment to their design aesthetic.

"Migrant Motion" by May Benton // www.summerhousestyle.com

7. Where do you draw your inspiration for your work?

I am greatly inspired by nature. I love being outside in the natural world and finding interesting plants and flowers and studying their uniqueness that God created. Also traveling and exploring something new have always brought me much inspiration.

Thank you so much, May!

You can find out more about her and see more from her on her website and her Facebook page! And of course, you can see her beautiful photographs in person here at SummerHouse!

Inside The Orange Box: The Importance Of Art

27
JUNE
2014

Inside The Orange Box this week, we’re talking all about ART and its importance in a home. We visited with Whit Geary, owner of VIEW GALLERY just a few doors down from us! We love Whit’s taste and, since she was once a SummerHouse Interior Designer, we thought she’d be the perfect person to give us a little insight into the value of art in a personal space. Let’s see what she has to say!

Inside The Orange Box // SummerHouse

“During the time I spent as an interior designer, I was able to integrate original art into most of the jobs I was doing. It was so transforming to a space that it left me with a real impression of the importance of art in a home. I’ve worked with the most beautiful fabrics, accessories, elements… Glass, iron, velvets, cottons… The whole bit… But it’s so different when a piece of art is involved in a design scheme!”

Art from View Gallery in The Township in Ridgeland, MS // www.alwayssummerblog.com

“I prefer to start with a great piece of art when designing a space because it’s one of the most valuable investments you make in your home. Typically you don’t get rid of it. You know, sofas you’ll recover, or you might change out your chairs… But art, you keep. As is.”

Art from View Gallery in The Township in Ridgeland, MS // www.alwayssummerblog.com

“Selecting a piece of art is such a great way to start a plan for your home because I think it reflects your personality the best. Your home is going to feel like you if you start that way. On the flip side, I’ve also seen really good designers completely map out a scheme for a home and come back at the end and introduce the art, which is perfectly fine as well. There is no rule about whether to start with it or finish with it!”

Art from View Gallery in The Township in Ridgeland, MS // www.alwayssummerblog.com

How do you pick the right piece of art?

“Work with a professional* who will ask a lot of questions about your lifestyle, things you’re interested in, what your home is like, and what your needs are. Many times people come in and they have a specific space they’re looking to fill. Occassionally, I have people who are collectors and are looking for the next piece of art that captures their attention. Most of the time, though, it’s people wanting to address an empty space or add a focal point. Is their goal to have a focal point, or are they just looking for something that pleases them? Neither answer is wrong!”

(*SummerHouse designers + Whit make the BEST professional art selection team in the world! In our humble opinion… 🙂 )

Art from View Gallery in The Township in Ridgeland, MS // www.alwayssummerblog.com

“Scale is so important. So is texture. Depending on whether you have a smooth surface or a textured surface, there are certain pieces that will look better than others. Most of the time people just need a little bit of guidance, which I am happy to provide!”

Thank you for your insight, Whit!!

Lines We Love: Natural Curiosities

23
JUNE
2014

We’ve always been huge fans of the art that the talented people behind Natural Curiosities create, so when we saw their newest collection, inspired by Egyptian hieroglyphs, we were instantly enthralled!

These ancient symbols are “silkscreened over gold leaf to highlight their understated beauty as abstract art,” as the company puts it.

See what you think about these 24″ x 24″ works of art!

Yesterday’s impromptu Trunk Show / Sample Sale with Lauren Lachance was a success! And so much fun!

Lauren brought in all of her market samples, plus several other beauties she had available, and set them up all over the showroom. Her art always looks so pretty mixed in with SummerHouse furnishings like what we have on the floor!

Guests enjoyed a little bite to eat while taking in the botanical beauty of these unique pieces of art. It truly was a great day here at the store!

Clean and Inviting

02
JANUARY
2014

Today we have a beautiful project by designer Casey Jenkins to show you! This Master Bedroom turned out exactly how Casey and her clients wanted it, which is always the best outcome! We’ll let Casey tell you a little more about the project!

Bedroom by designer Casey Jenkins // SummerHouse

“The clients started off needing a desk for their office. They were very particular about color finishes and function for their everyday use. Then focus shifted to completing the Living Room.

When I proposed the Living Room, they were so inspired that we decided to complete other rooms as well! This is where we decided to do the Master Bedroom, which is always my favorite room to design! In a Master Bedroom, it is easy to lock down purpose for furniture pieces as well as comfort for the client.”

Master Bedroom by Interior Designer Casey Jenkins | SummerHouse

“These two young clients loved the color palette that was presented to them, and we got started right away! It may be hard to capture by photograph, but the back wall is lined with a Schumacher ivory and matte gold Greek key design. The drapery fabric has an embroidered linen abstract vertical design providing movement and color. The bed was custom made by a local artisan with a light cream linen insert.

We went with all custom pillows and went between slight variations of fabric colors ranging from ivory to light and charcoal blue. The Moore Council Washed Oak Chests are fabulous with a secret door at the top!”

Master Bedroom by Interior Designer Casey Jenkins | SummerHouse

“My favorite wall in this room houses 9 Lauren LaChance botanicals. They bring such a warmth to the space and sense of nature into this serene room! The small slip-covered Lee chairs allow for a small reading area with custom Hodsoll McKenzie embroidered pillows.”

Master Bedroom by Interior Designer Casey Jenkins | SummerHouse

“I so enjoy working with these clients that allow me to present to them what I believe is best for them in their everyday environment. The home’s interior now feels so clean and inviting, just the way we wanted it!”

What You May Not Know About The Lauren Lachance Collection

02
OCTOBER
2013

The Lauren Lachance Collection Trunk Show is only a week away! We’re getting really excited about the pieces that they’re bringing (they actually just sent us a long list!), so we can’t wait to mingle with Lauren and Eduardo and talk plants! As we’ve gotten to know more and more about their collection, the more interesting they become. Here are some fun facts highlighting what we’ve learned!

What you may not know about The Lauren Lachance Collection…

– The Lauren Lachance Collection is the largest collection of plant pressings in the world!

LAUREN LACHANCE ART AT SUMMERHOUSE– Artist Lauren Lachance and her husband Eduardo Benitez of Texas are the masterminds behind the beautiful Lauren Lachance Collection.

– Pressed botanical art blends seamlessly alongside transitional and contemporary art and furnishings, and never fails to capture attention. We know this from experience! Our clients love it!

– Lauren and Eduardo use hand selected organic plant material from around the globe to use in their art.

– The plants in the new collection that will be showcased here at SummerHouse on October 10 were largely harvested last winter along the coastline from Naples, Florida to New Orleans, Louisiana. Get ready to see tropical leaves, sea grasses, and swamp lilies in their new collection, in addition to flowers, lotus hydrangeas, orchids, and ferns from their existing collection!

– On gathering plants last winter, Eduardo says, “We loved every minute of our six week trip: Kayaking inter coastal river ways to gather swamp specimens, and other endless hours wading and walking through overgrown brush along roadsides and empty inlet islands.”  Quite the adventurers they are!

– Their orchid art pressings grace the halls of Harvard University and have been shown at the Chicago and New York Botanic Gardens. Impressive, wouldn’t you say?!

Botanical Pressed Art by Lauren Lachance // SummerHouse – In April, Lauren and Eduardo will be guests of honor at The Nature Conservancy’s first annual fund raiser in Scottsdale, Arizona alongside world renowned floral designer Remco van Vliet of the Metropolitan Museum of Modern Art.

– The tropical leaves, orchids, seaweed and wildflowers are pressed and preserved in a labor intensive process that creates original, archival, museum-quality pieces of art.

– The orchid art authentically depicts endangered or extinct species, which are reproduced using a variety of tropical plant material.

– Hanging on our walls at the store during the show will be, among many, two very important pieces from last winter’s Gulf Coast adventure: A triptych of tropical palms and fronds, each panel measuring 44″ x 64″ inches, and a scene from the Everglades Canopy measuring 6′ x 9′.

– Their most challenging commission was a series of eight 12′ high Palm fronds for a palatial hallway! It took over six months just to find the different palms and another several months to complete the drying process!

– Lauren and Eduardo love what they do!

Don’t miss the ALL DAY trunk show on October 10th, starting at 10 a.m., then join us for cocktails and hors d’oeuvres from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. and chat with the artists themselves! We look forward to seeing you!

We aren’t sure how we’re going to handle our excitement over these pieces once they actually arrive, but we’ll cross that bridge when we get there!
