11 Holiday Entertaining Tips To Lessen Your Party-Planning Stress

SummerHouse's Top 11 Holiday Party Planning Tips // www.alwayssummerblog.com

It’s time to start thinking about holiday party planning! The less stressful a party is for you, the hostess, the more fun it will be for both you and your guests! The SummerHouse staff has rounded up some of our best party tips to share with you to hopefully lessen your holiday stress and increase your party-planning fun!

Executive Design Assistant Camille Parker: “I love to throw a quick party, and usually end up with equal parts store bought goodies and home made treats! A great trick is to always put the store bought things in a nice dish or piece of pottery/china, it completely transforms the dish and your guests are none the wiser!”

SummerHouse's Top 11 Holiday Party Planning Tips // www.alwayssummerblog.com

Interior Designer Elish Moon: “My best party tip is create balance in the budget, preparation, menu, etc.. I have a cake that I make every year specifically for Christmas. It is incredible but extremely time consuming. To make sure I enjoy the party prepping and don’t get overwhelmed, I break making this cake down into manageable stages. I make the layers about two weeks ahead of time and freeze them. Then the day before the party I make the filling and the icing and put the cake together. The day of I’ll garnish. This makes the process less daunting for me! Try applying this method to other areas. To lower the impact of a party to your budget start buying what you can ahead of time. This way everything doesn’t hit all at once. I try to remember- if hosting a holiday gathering gets too stressful because of things within my control, I’m defeating the whole purpose of the party! If buying ready made cookies and icing them yourself or not hand making place cards saves a step and helps you breathe a little easier it’s worth it! Not only for you, but for the people who are there to enjoy your company! Happy Holidays!”

SummerHouse's Top 11 Holiday Party Planning Tips // www.alwayssummerblog.com

Interior Design Assistant Anabel Webb: “Something that my mother and her friend group has always practiced (since I can remember) for literally EVERY dinner, get together, or party is that they will pull out the serving platters about a day ahead of time and then they’ll label what will go where, like “the McCarty will hold the Sausage Balls” and what not…I’ve started doing it ever since I’ve gotten married and my husband actually thinks it is the most organized, uptight, and brilliant idea he’s ever heard of.”

SummerHouse's Top 11 Holiday Party Planning Tips // www.alwayssummerblog.com

Interior Designer Katherine Shelton: “I personally do not host many holiday parties. However, I have attended many and know never to show up empty handed. I always bring a nice bottle of wine or a simple dish that everyone is sure to love!”

SummerHouse's Top 11 Holiday Party Planning Tips // www.alwayssummerblog.com

Interior Designer Lana Pate: “I always serve a signature cocktail but I also include a festive punch for non alcoholic guests and children. One of my favorite holiday cocktails is Milk Punch!”
SummerHouse's Top 11 Holiday Party Planning Tips // www.alwayssummerblog.com

Receptionist Della Turner: “Make sure you’re well stocked on bathroom must haves!! Have plenty of toilet paper, hand towels, and hand soap. And make sure you have a candle lit, or at least have some air freshener on hand!”

SummerHouse's Top 11 Holiday Party Planning Tips // www.alwayssummerblog.com

Social Media Director Laurel Donahoo: “I’ve learned over the years that the day of a party is not the time to try a new recipe. If you want to make something you’ve never made before, I recommend doing a practice round a week or so in advance, just so you can work out any kinks and perfect it in time for the party! That way, if it’s a total flop, you have time to figure out what went wrong or just make something completely different!”

SummerHouse's Top 11 Holiday Party Planning Tips // www.alwayssummerblog.com

Interior Design Assistant Krystle Short: “Be sure to appeal to all of your guests senses! Natural elements like rosemary sprigs and whole cranberries are always beautiful, especially when combined with nostalgic treats like ribbon candies or peppermint sticks!  When entertaining, I try to use cohesive scents from candles throughout the home (like this yummy Aerin candle).  Keep treats and snacks scattered throughout the space to prevent people from bunching up in just one.  When playing holiday tunes, go for artists that are easy on the ears like Nat King Cole or She and Him.  Low lighting from lamps and string lights are best as overhead can be too harsh.  As far as refreshments go, I highly recommend a big ol batch of Brandy Milk Punch!”

SummerHouse's Top 11 Holiday Party Planning Tips // www.alwayssummerblog.com

Interior Designer Lindsey Townsend: “It’s always nice to have a holiday candle burning for holiday parties.  If you are on a budget, trying using fresh greenery or flowers from your yard or somewhere near by.  Christmas tree farms will give away cuttings for free — they are great to use for a large table piece or around your mantel.”
SummerHouse's Top 11 Holiday Party Planning Tips // www.alwayssummerblog.com

Director of Operations Marty Smith: “Don’t fret over fancy fresh flowers. You have a huge source of fabulousness in your back yard,  around your neighborhood  or even off the side of the road. Clip from your tress, shrubs, and other plants in your yard.  You will be surprised at what an impact a big bunch of magnolia branches in your favorite container will make. You have guestS to tend to and food to make, no need to have flowers being an added stress. Sit back, get a good play list going, grab a cocktail and ENJOY.”

SummerHouse's Top 11 Holiday Party Planning Tips // www.alwayssummerblog.com

Interior Designer Laurie Conway: “I like to pull out my favorite crystal or silver serving pieces and place a cake or dressing into them, garnishing with rosemary and fruit. My secret is that it was all prepared by Mcdade’s but everyone thinks I prepared it all and will ask for my recipe!”

30A Living

30A Living

We have a new book in the shop that leaves us absolutely smitten. This new book, called 30A Living, is compiled by talented duo Lynn Nesmith and Jean Allsopp, and highlights the beauty and charm of the magnificent strip of Florida beach towns known as 30A. The homes in these beach towns are as equally magnificent as the beaches on which they are nestled.

30A Living available at summerhousestyle.com

We got to chat with both Lynn and Jean about how this book came together and learned so much! Writer Lynn and photographer Jean found each other when they worked together at Southern Living earlier in their careers and have continued a friendship from there. We are so glad they remained friends and started putting books together because their books are GORGEOUS! 30A Living is a follow up to 30A Style, which was a book that was so popular, it got reprinted three times and sold out every time.

Because of the success of 30A Style, 30A Living just seemed like a natural follow-up. Same beach towns, same staff, but larger format, different homes, and more pages! “We wanted all of the various 30A communities to be represented, as well as a variety of styles. Contemporary, cottagey, traditional. I like the mix that ended up in the book,” says Lynn.

“The biggest challenge with this book was choosing which photos to include to have the best mix of styles,” Jean adds.

When we asked Lynn what she hoped readers of this book walked away with, she told us, “I hope readers get design ideas and get inspired. Even if you can’t build homes like the ones we show, hopefully you can still at least get great ideas. I love 30A, and the people who vacation here love it too. It was a joy to get to highlight all of the different communities and how different they all are.”

It is a joy to us to flip through each page of this book, one by one, devouring the stunning detail of each of the featured homes. Jean and Lynn, y’all did a BEAUTIFUL job! Every word and every photo are top notch!

Beachy Bold

We are big fans of a coastal-inspired space, since coast equals beach, and beach equals summer! (We aren’t called SummerHouse for nothin!)

We also love when a bold velvet has the opportunity to enter the scene.

Absolute design magic happens when beachy and bold come together seamlessly, creating a livable, unexpected, totally gorgeous room! That’s exactly what happened in the guest room of one of Lisa’s favorite clients, who was in need of an update.

That big blue velvet and that serene Lynn Sanders painting on a canvas of white walls and white bedding just created the happiest vibe! We also love the feel of the herringbone rug, textured side tables, and stunning blue lamps! The shell mirror, made by the client herself, adds just the right amount of authentic beachiness to the room.

This client’s guests are sure to feel right at home when they get the opportunity to spend a night or two in this happy space!

We hope you’re enjoying the end of your summer and taking it all in before school starts back!

Wild About Wallpaper

Wallpaper. We love it! It’s a fun way to add interest to a space, large or small. A full room, an accent wall, on the back of a bookshelf… We love both subtle and bold. It’s just so versatile! We’ve used our share of wallpapers, wall coverings, and hand painted wall stencils to add interest to some of our favorite spaces to get them juuuuust right. Here’ proof that wallpaper (and wall stenciling) is EVERYTHING!

Can you tell which two photos are hand painted wall stencils? If you guessed the last two photos, you are correct! Lisa designed each of the rooms in which the hand painted stencils were used, and they could not have turned out prettier! Those rooms (well, all of them actually!) are proof that hiring a designer is SO worth it. Trained interior designers understand scale and color and can get your walls exactly how they should be.

If you’re interested in updating your walls, give us a call! We’d love to help you fulfill your vision. Thank you so much for stopping by today! It means so much to us.

Recently, as we were flipping through the latest issue of Traditional Home, we saw a feature on page 25 about canopy beds and felt our eyes turning into hearts as we stared at the page! So we rounded up a few more to go along with the ones that Traditional Home liked! All of these beds can be ordered through SummerHouse! 🙂

Designer of the Week Katherine Shelton

SummerHouse Designer of the Week Katherine SheltonOur newest Designer of the Week is Katherine Shelton! We love having Katherine as a part of our team. She is such a hard worker and filled with so many great ideas!!

Let’s get on to her Designer of the Week Q&A!

Tell us about a few of your favorite details in a project you’re currently working on!

All of my projects lately, no matter the color palate, seem to have a lot of texture in them. From all of the fabrics to the finishes on the furniture and the accessories as well as the art. And I am Loving it. I LOVE textures!!! They make me very happy!

What is your favorite design trend right now (and why?)

I currently have several favorite design trends. I really like all the carrera marble we are seeing. It seems to be everywhere! Floors in the kitchen and bathrooms, backsplashes and walls. At SummerHouse we have just gotten in some of the cutest picture frames and coasters mixed with carrera marble and wood. Love them! I am also really liking chevron pattern floors… You can lay this pattern with wood, natural stone, or brick. Just makes a small or large space so interesting and can give a room that designer look instantly. Of coarse we want to keep this at a minimum in one home! And lastly, I love all of the brushed gold! It is all the rage. From cabinet hardware and bath fixtures to lamps and chandeliers. And mixing it with grey paint colors and carrera marble is my favorite look. You can also find brushed gold on furniture nail heads and casters and all kinds of accessories come in this finish.

SummerHouse Designer of the Week Katherine Shelton

Is there a publication, book, blog, website, magazine that has just really inspired you lately? Tell us about it!

I Love the Atlanta Homes and Lifestyles. It is always so full of fresh ideas. I am also very fond of Atlanta Homes and Lifestyles because I lived Buckhead and truly miss living in in that beautiful city. I hope to one day be able to move back. Everyone drums to their own beat. The homes are all so unique to the personalities of each homeowner. I love all of the creativity and uniqueness shown in this publication each and every time it comes out.

What’s your favorite room in a home to design? Why?

My very favorite space to design in a home is a child’s bedroom. It is where I can be the most creative, the most fun, and the most colorful or bold in pattern play. The look on a child’s face when you reveal the space to them is also so wonderful. Wallpaper or fun paint on the walls, modern mixed with antique or vintage pieces, fun built in play spaces or desk areas, a mixture of original art, photography, and prints and custom bedding and window treatments are just a few important key factors on creating a fabulous baby, child, or teen bedroom.

White on White

We absolutely love all white spaces. White on white is crisp, neutral, both modern AND traditional, and simply soothing. All white spaces start with all white walls and trim, so we hit up our design staff for their favorite white + white combos. We love what they’ve picked!

The SummerHouse designers weigh in on their favorite white on white paint color combinations! // www.alwayssummerblog.com

Design Assistant Anabel Webb prefers the Benjamin Moore combo Decorator’s White with Simply White on the trim. Design Assistant Camille Holland Parker likes White Dove on White Dove! Design Assistant Krystle Short’s pick is Ben Moore’s Navajo White on the walls with Farrow & Ball James White on the trim. Designer Katy Sanders likes all Ben Moore Ivory White on both walls AND trim! Lindsey Townsend loves Ben Moore Moonlight White with Simply White on the trim. Katy Carone’s pick is Ben Moore Glacier White on the wall with White Dove on the trim.

Designer Elish Phares Moon likes the monochromatic Ben Moore Moonlight White on both walls and trim and tells us why it’s so beautiful!

“One color? For the walls AND trim? It may sound too good to be true, but in this case, less is more. Although it’s a little too much restraint for some personalities, an all white house is incredibly inviting. It took me a while to get on board. I thought “all white? and stifle my creativity? Leave a huge canvas… blank? NEVER! ” I first tried this combo with a client in Oxford… when I finally saw the finished product it was love at first sight. I loved it so much I did it in my own home- and I fall a little more in love with it each day.”

Great picks, designers. Do YOU have a favorite white on white combo? Tell us in the comments below!

Big Impact In A Small Room

In this edition of Inside The Orange Box, our designers are talking about powder rooms! Specifically, how to make the biggest impact in the smallest room of the house! Our question to them was, “If you could only change one thing in a powder room, what would you change that makes the biggest impact?”

Here’s what they had to say!

INTERIOR DESIGNER KATY SANDERS

The walls!  Whether it is a dark, saturated paint color or a fun wallcovering, this is the best way to make a big impact in a small space!

SummerHouse designers share the most impactful changes that can be made in a powder room

( photo cred )

INTERIOR DESIGNER MARY COURTNEY JOHNS

Lighting makes a huge impact in such a small space. There is a fine balance between there being too much and too little. Having sconces as well as a chandelier allow for plenty of direct light on your face while looking in the mirror as well as illumination for the overall room. This also makes the room feel more substantial and open. Choose some standout fixtures to increase the impact factor!

SummerHouse designers share the most impactful changes that can be made in a powder room

( photo cred )

INTERIOR DESIGNER ELISH MOON

So this may not be the simplest answer, but it depends on what state the bathroom is in. If you have decent cabinetry and stone already, try a new paint color or wallcovering. If the countertop is an eyesore, invest in some beautiful stone. (Some powder bathrooms might be small enough to score a deal on a stone remnant!)  Another easy update is new lighting! Get creative and evaluate your priorities.

INTERIOR DESIGNER KATIE CARONE

Picking a dramatic new paint color or wallcovering is always the quickest and easiest change that can make such a huge difference in a powder room, assuming no major updates or remodels need to occur. Second to this would be updating the fixtures and/or lighting.

What is your favorite design trend right now and why?

My favorite design trend right now is actually designers who are using their expertise to explore designs a little off the beaten path. In a new generation of clients who are Pinterest, HGTV, and internet educated it’s sometimes difficult for interior designers to “wow” their clients. I love seeing designs that aren’t replicas of the most commonly pinned bathroom on Pinterest. I’m not pointing fingers- I’m definitely guilty of sometimes seeking inspiration online before wracking my own brain. But I’ve been really inspired lately not by perfectly replicated designs, but by the designers and clients who take a little liberty with trying out new things!

We know designers always have a little pile of samples of things that they hope to be able to use in their own homes one day… Tell us about one thing that’s in your current pile and why you love it or how you plan to use it!

I am very guilty of having a “happy” pile for my future home. Right now my favorite thing is the most unessential. I am completely in love with a jeweled Samuel & Sons trim. I stare at it longingly often and dream of ways to make it work. Of course, having a seasoned design eye, I chose something very costly. I’m just like my clients though- I need to be practical. I need a home that is inviting and that doesn’t have a warning sign at the door- “no one under the age of 5, though sippy cups are welcome”. I need practical! But that doesn’t mean I haven’t ruled out a gorgeous trim on future drapery. Your home has to make YOU happy first and foremost. And there’s nothing wrong with that.

What’s your favorite room in a home to design? Why?

My favorite room to design is a living room. It’s the heartbeat of the house (second only to the kitchen) where many memories are made. I like the challenge of creating a beautiful but functional space. That one room really needs to be the full package. It has to be visually appealing, functional, the hub for the house. I think a successful living room design is incredibly rewarding.

Tell us about your favorite project to date and what you love about that particular project!

My favorite project to date has been a roughly 14 month project in Oxford, MS. We just had our first install for the project last week and I’ve never had a more rewarding experience. It wasn’t the scale of the project (though large), the budget, or the location. It was an incredibly close relationship with a client equally dedicated to not sacrificing details in her home. The projects that I consistently walk away from feeling accomplished and gratified, are the ones that reflect an open and communicative relationship with my client. It shows in every detail: the cohesiveness of rooms, materials, etc.. We worked hard to be on the same page throughout and I think it shows. I feel very grateful for the opportunity to have learned so much and gained such experience… and to have a project I can walk away from proud I have my name on it.
