Easter Inspiration

Happy March!! This new month has really snuck up on us, even with the extra day in February (hey, leap year!), but we are so excited that spring is inching closer. We were just thinking about what March has in store for us and realized Easter will be here before we know it!

Our designers have some great tips about decorating for Easter so we decided to share a few with you!

Designer Katherine Shelton

This year when you go to decorate your table take three pots and paint them you favorite spring color such as robins egg blue, mint green or my favorite color this year Gray. Place them straight down the center of the table and plant white tulips in each. Around each pot place two to three eggs on each side unevenly. This year rather than dying your eggs boil them and leave them white. Then add a little gold or silver leaf to the white eggs.  Set the table with your favorite spring china or solid white china, silver and linen napkins and your done!  Will look so simple and amazing.  Happy Easter!

Designer Elish Phares Moon

My family never did decorate for Easter, but when I was younger decorating eggs was always a tradition. Now that I’m older I’d love to try some of the more mature designs that have been on Pinterest!

Thank you ladies! And of course we aren’t going to leave without great eye candy. Here is some Easter inspiration to kick off your day!

Inside The Orange Box: Favorite Celebrity Designers, Part 2

A couple of weeks ago, we shared some of our designers’ favorite celebrity designers! If you missed that post, you can get to it here!

Today, a few more designers give their input on which celeb designers they love and why! Let’s see what they have to say!

Interior Designer Todd Prince

I like Thomas O’Brien. His Aero book is one of my favorites. I love how his designs look very “found” and never overly decorated. He is great at mixing old and new and brining in a little bit of eclectic. I think his work is great.

Interior Designer Lindsey Townsend

The interior design community is full of a wealth of talented designers and architects.  I follow the work of so many!  Some of my favorite designers to draw inspiration from are McAlpine Booth & Ferrier Interiors, Beth Webb, Darryl Carter, Melanie Turner, and the always amazing Suzanne Kasler.

Interior Designer Elish Phares Moon

I truly don’t have a favorite designer. To me, the mark of a great designer is one who evolves with their clients, therefore they may not have an easily detectable signature style. Still, there is always that common thread in design that is well-executed that is magnetic. Some designers that I seem to always be drawn to aspects of their projects are Jessica Helgerson, McAlpine Booth & Ferrier Interiors, & almost any designer based out of Atlanta – the talent packed into that city is incredible! Oh and Aerin Lauder’s product design is unparalleled…she can do no wrong.

We love all of these picks! Great style is truly so inspiring.

Inside The Orange Box: Shelf Help

09
OCTOBER
2015

We’re back with another edition of Inside The Orange Box! Today’s topic: Bookshelves. Here is what we asked our designers!

What is one of your favorite ways to add interest to bookshelves?

INTERIOR DESIGNER LISA PALMER

Bookshelves can be challenging. I always like bookshelves to be about books. So I start at the bottom with books and work my way up adding accessories.  There is a balance achieved that is a little unexplainable when mixing accessories and books. I just know when the shelf is balanced and then when the side of the bookshelf in total is balanced. Sometimes you have to play with it several times to achieve it. I like to combine new and old, modern and traditional accessories with books as well as art in the bookshelves for an interesting balance.

Inspiring bookshelves // www.alwayssummerblog.com

INTERIOR DESIGNER MARY COURTNEY JOHNS

I tend to keep shelving minimal so that each item has room to stand out on its on. This space is meant to display items personal to the home owner so there should be no need to add extra, meaningless pieces to fill leftover inches. Take your time to find items that are sentimental and appropriate.

Inspiring bookshelves // www.alwayssummerblog.com

INTERIOR DESIGNER TODD PRINCE

I love working in small pieces of art and family photos into bookshelves so that it doesn’t read too “bookish.”  Also I love hanging art from the front of a shelf as well.  Great impact and it changes the depth perception of the entire bookcase.

Inspiring bookshelves // www.alwayssummerblog.com

INTERIOR DESIGNER ELISH PHARES MOON

Mix static and organic elements. Books interspersed with horns or a geode. Make a bookshelf look a bit more collected by adding a novel sculpture. Bookshelves are a great place to let an owner’s individualism show through.

Inspiring bookshelves // www.alwayssummerblog.com

INTERIOR DESIGNER KATY HINES

Art is a great way to add interest to bookshelves.  It can break your eye from the common repetitiveness of books and accessories.

INTERIOR DESIGNER CAMILLE HOLLAND PARKER

Using found objects and personal items, without over-crowding the shelves, is essential to adding interest. Most people assume filling up the bookshelves is the best way to tackle it, but I start just the opposite way. Less is more and creating symmetry with hefty and dainty objects is a great way to calm the eye when reading bookshelves.

Inspiring bookshelves // www.alwayssummerblog.com

(( find all of the original sources of these photos via this pin board! ))

What is your favorite element to incorporate into bookshelves?

If you ever need any help with getting yours looking just right, don’t hesitate to call us for help! We love the challenge of bookshelves!

Inside The Orange Box: Nontraditional Neutrals, Part 2

31
JULY
2015

You might remember seeing from our last Orange Box post about nontraditional neutrals! Today, more of our designers are getting in on the discussion! Let’s see what they have to say!

DESIGNER LINDSEY TOWNSEND

One of my favorite non-traditional neutrals is dark slate blue-greys. I love how it can really ground a space while also balancing well with many other color schemes.  It can be used within a traditional design palette or contemporary.  It is a very versatile non-traditional neutral!

SummerHouse designers' favorite nontraditional neutrals // www.alwayssummerblog.com

SummerHouse designers' favorite nontraditional neutrals // www.alwayssummerblog.com

DESIGNER CAMILLE HOLLAND

My favorite non-traditional neutral is black, it is usually thought of as an accent to white or grey neutrals, but it is amazing standing on its own as the main color in a space! It pairs great with all colors and can make any room stand out as a show stopper or can tone down a space for subtle elegance!

DESIGNER KATY HINES

I have really been drawn to blush tones lately!  When paired with creams and ivory, it creates a soft, sophisticated palette.  And it is a beautiful accent to darker neutrals like charcoal and taupe.  Here are a few blush accents you can find in our showroom now!

Designer of the Week: Elish Phares

05
JUNE
2015

Our Designer of the Week this week is Elish Phares!

SummerHouse Interior Designer of the Week: Elish Phares // www.alwayssummerblog.com

(1) Tell us about your favorite project that has been completely finished and installed! What made that project stand out?

My favorite installed project to date is probably Arco Avenue. It was my first true “commercial” design experience, and really pushed me outside of my residential design comfort zone. The owners, Katie & Jordan, have a strong vision for their store and were lovely to work with. In addition to nailing down a style that captures the owners of Arco as well as appeals to their customer base, I had to study retail design, safety concerns, and really work out custom details. The result is something I am proud and honored to be a part of.

SummerHouse Interior Designer of the Week: Elish Phares // www.alwayssummerblog.com

(2) We know you’re starting to think about a house of your own since you’re getting married this summer (YAY!) What, to you, is the most important thing to order/get done to that house?

2. I am getting married soon and we are in the process of finding our future home! This is so exciting, but as many of you know, there is a big dose of reality involved. Icky words like budget and re-sale value come into play. I think first you need to sit down and really think about priorities for your wants and needs and then figure out where and if those things fall into your budget. For some, like us, it may be really stripped down at first like a fresh coat of paint to brighten up the inside of your home or create curb appeal outside. For me, so far, my priorities have been paint because it is a great way to get a big return for a small investment, as well as rugs. It may sound strange, but good rugs are investment pieces. More vital things like kids, school, etc.. may knock big items down our list in the future. I’d rather knock out one or two big ticket items now and then slowly check off the rest of our list over time. I may be a designer, but I live in the real world too- you can’t always do a full home makeover at once. Design how you would like your space ideally and don’t compromise. It may take a little longer to check things off of your list, but do it once and do it right.

SummerHouse Interior Designer of the Week: Elish Phares // www.alwayssummerblog.com

(3) What have you been into lately as far as patterns? Where is your favorite place to use a pattern?

Lately I have been into really subtle patterns. Neutrals with texture or tonal patterns using herringbone, greek keys, etc.. I also have really loved washed patterns with splashes of color. Patterns that are washed or faded and don’t have sharp edges. For neutral patterns the world is your oyster; they are great on drapery, sofas, bedding…anything. For other patterns I think sometimes smaller doses can actually catch your eye more easily because they are focused. I often use patterns on throw pillows, a lone accent chair, or a pair of ottomans.

(4) Is there anywhere in the Jackson area you like to go to get inspired and refreshed?

I am so blessed to live in a beautiful area of Jackson that has a wide range of homes. Jackson is packed with character! I also run in the mornings to get my daily outdoor time and get my day off to a good start. It’s just how I decompress and process. One of my favorite things to do is look at the homes in my neighborhood as I run; ongoing renovations, new landscaping, etc… There are so many different styles represented and some days I will randomly notice a home I’ve passed every morning for a year and just never keyed on. It’s crazy!

SummerHouse Interior Designer of the Week: Elish Phares // www.alwayssummerblog.com

(5) What do you most love about being a designer?

Some may laugh, but being an interior designer is a tough, demanding occupation. It was a very undervalued service until recently. It’s still sometimes a challenge to help people understand the value of a professional eye. Your home is your respite. It is your oasis in the madness of everyday life and hectic schedules. It is where many memories are made and family inside jokes are shared. It is a value that can’t always be defined but is always felt. I think I enjoy proving to myself and others daily that I know what I’m doing and one of the most rewarding experiences in life is right under your nose…loving where you live!

Meet Danielle!

We have a new face for y’all to get familiar with around here! (And we have several position changes to tell you about, too!)

Danielle Rooney // SummerHouseDanielle Rooney // SummerHouseFirst, the new face. Meet Danielle Rooney, our new receptionist! Danielle is absolutely precious, and the most perfect addition to our fun-loving team up here at SH! Jen, our former receptionist, will now be our web store manager! She’s got a major in photography and is just really good with computers in general, so it was a natural fit. Patty, our former web store manager, is now going to be Lisa’s assistant! Having worked as a design assistant before, and because she and Lisa just gel so well, this too was a natural fit! That means Mary Courtney, Lisa’s former assistant, is now a designer! Yay for Mary Court! We know she’s going to do a killer job and we can’t wait to see all of the gorgeous projects she’ll get to work on with you guys!

Now it’s time for our traditional Q&A with the newbie!

Tell us about yourself!

I am from Madison! I split my time pretty evenly between Ole Miss and Southern. I am finishing up my degree in Public Relations at Southern, and I will be graduating in May. My dad is from Ireland, but he is currently living in Brussels, Belgium! He works for International Paper. My older brother also works for International Paper and is living in Memphis. My mom lives here in Madison, and she works for Lee Hawkins Realty. My step dad, Toby, is my world! He lives in Madison too and he works for Hemphill. He’s wonderful! He’s always treated me like his own daughter. I have an Australian Shepherd named Meeko, and I’m obsessed with her. She’s such a diva!

From where do you think your interest in interior design stems?

I realized that my interest started when I was traveling. I started re-telling my traveling stories by using details of what the place looked like, using very small details. The look and feel of whatever place I was in created the mood and memories for me. I realized that I wanted to be a part of that and help others to have memories of their own. I could learn about different people and their lifestyles. I could create an atmosphere that helps people feel happy and proud of their own space. I just really wanted to be part of that!

What’s your favorite design publication and why?

I would have to say I really love Southern Living. I really love the country/farmhouse/cottage look. It tends to show very light and airy houses with hues of light greens and blues. I love that! My dream house would be a little beach cottage on the South Carolina shore.

Where would your dream vacation be?

Hmm. I have never been to Hawaii, and I have always wanted to. I would also love to go to Greece! I think that is my next stop on my European check list.

What’s your favorite local place to eat in the metro Jackson area and why?

Definitely Babalu! Their guacamole, sangria, and tuna tacos are to die for. Not to mention, I just love the ambiance and outside patio. The best time of year to eat at Babalu is the summer when you can sit outside at night.

What TV show are you currently most obsessed with?!

It’s a little bit cheesy, but I am obsessed with The Vampire Diaries!

How do you take your caffeine?

Always and in any way possible. My favorite coffee shop is Cups! I go probably at least once a day. I either get a cappuccino, or if I’m craving something sweet, I’ll get an iced Blondie Latte with espresso ice cubes!

If you could have any one superpower, what would it be?

This is always such a hard one for me. I think I would love to fly. My favorite thing in the world is traveling, but I have such a fear of planes, even though I’ve been flying since I was 4. It would be perfect if I could fly anywhere in the world!

What’s your favorite way to spend a little free time?

Anytime I can just be outside enjoying the sunshine and running around with my dog. I also love to spend time with my best friend and her two baby boys!

What was the best part about your first day at SummerHouse?

Everyone that works here is just so sweet and welcoming! They made me feel so comfortable and like I was part of the family already. I’m excited to keep learning about design and getting to know everyone!

/ / / / /  \ \ \ \ \

Thank you for allowing us to get to know you a little better, Danielle! Looking forward to having you around! 😉

Inside The Orange Box: Detailing A Custom Pillow

03
OCTOBER
2014

Our Inside The Orange Box topic for today is all about detailing your pillows! Pillows make such an impact, even if they aren’t the biggest, most expensive items in the room. They are of utmost importance!

Pillows are a place where designers can get a little creative with fabric and all of the fabulous trims that are available to them today!

There are so many ways to take a pillow up a few notches with simple tweaks or additions, so our designers share some of their favorite ways to do so!

>>> LEAD DESIGNER LISA PALMER <<<

“My favorite pillow detail is, hands down, a butterflied corner on a sheer flange!”

>>> DESIGNER ELISH PHARES <<<

“There are so many ways to make one pillow go a long way. One of my favorite details is to add a sheer flange. Another under-used detail is the boxed pillow. You can also reverse the fabric application or add banding… just a subtle something extra can go a long way!”

“If the design is right, railroading a fabric (or running it the opposite way from how it comes off the bolt) on a lumbar pillow or long accent pillow is a nice change up. I like to do a contrasting fabric for the backs of pillows as well! And usually I order my pillow forms one inch bigger than the actual size of the pillow to make sure they’re nice and full!”

“I commissioned the late artist Lynn Green Root to do an art piece for me, and I had her custom art piece embroidered onto silk for these pillows. The client kept the original pen and ink drawing that she did and he framed it for his walls. It became a really, really special project for many reasons.”

In fact, all of their stonewashed coverlets are washable, plus a handful of their other fabric/coverlet options. And all of their sheets are made to order, which allows for customization! Another bonus– Almost all of their blankets and coverlets are stocked, so special orders of those items usually ship very quickly! Do you see why we love this line? 🙂

Beautiful, right?!

We love the monogrammed pillow from Bliss thrown into the mix to add just one more touch of personalization! And all of the bedding perfectly compliments that Vanguard bed!

Give us a call, or come in and see us, and ask a designer to show you all of your options and get your bed looking better than ever!
