We are a part of something over on Instagram that we are really excited about called Rafl Jxn!
In a nutshell, several great local Jackson area businesses (us included!) have each given Rafl gift cards to our shops. Each month, a huge pool of gift cards (think $1500 at the very least) will be given away to wonderful local folks like YOU! Or your mom! Or your husband! All of you can enter!
All you have to do is follow rafljxn and follow the other businesses participating (which are the businesses that rafljxn follows – including us!)
Once you’re following all of those accounts, you just have to comment on entry posts to be entered to win. (Entry posts look something like this!) The more entry posts you comment on, the better your chances of winning are! Each participating business will post one entry post per week. So it is definitely helpful to turn on notifications for each participating business so you can be sure to not miss a single entry post!
Rafl explains it fully on their How It Works page, so check here for the full explanation!
We plan to post our next entry post some time today so keep an eye out! 😉 And GOOD LUCK!
We’re beginning a new round of our always popular Designer of the Week series! Going first is Interior Designer Elish Phares Moon! We love having this girl as a part of our team and love hearing more about her favorite project to date, the item she longs to have in her house, and much more! Keep reading! 🙂
What is your favorite design trend right now and why?
My favorite design trend right now is actually designers who are using their expertise to explore designs a little off the beaten path. In a new generation of clients who are Pinterest, HGTV, and internet educated it’s sometimes difficult for interior designers to “wow” their clients. I love seeing designs that aren’t replicas of the most commonly pinned bathroom on Pinterest. I’m not pointing fingers- I’m definitely guilty of sometimes seeking inspiration online before wracking my own brain. But I’ve been really inspired lately not by perfectly replicated designs, but by the designers and clients who take a little liberty with trying out new things!
We know designers always have a little pile of samples of things that they hope to be able to use in their own homes one day… Tell us about one thing that’s in your current pile and why you love it or how you plan to use it!
I am very guilty of having a “happy” pile for my future home. Right now my favorite thing is the most unessential. I am completely in love with a jeweled Samuel & Sons trim. I stare at it longingly often and dream of ways to make it work. Of course, having a seasoned design eye, I chose something very costly. I’m just like my clients though- I need to be practical. I need a home that is inviting and that doesn’t have a warning sign at the door- “no one under the age of 5, though sippy cups are welcome”. I need practical! But that doesn’t mean I haven’t ruled out a gorgeous trim on future drapery. Your home has to make YOU happy first and foremost. And there’s nothing wrong with that.
What’s your favorite room in a home to design? Why?
My favorite room to design is a living room. It’s the heartbeat of the house (second only to the kitchen) where many memories are made. I like the challenge of creating a beautiful but functional space. That one room really needs to be the full package. It has to be visually appealing, functional, the hub for the house. I think a successful living room design is incredibly rewarding.
Tell us about your favorite project to date and what you love about that particular project!
My favorite project to date has been a roughly 14 month project in Oxford, MS. We just had our first install for the project last week and I’ve never had a more rewarding experience. It wasn’t the scale of the project (though large), the budget, or the location. It was an incredibly close relationship with a client equally dedicated to not sacrificing details in her home. The projects that I consistently walk away from feeling accomplished and gratified, are the ones that reflect an open and communicative relationship with my client. It shows in every detail: the cohesiveness of rooms, materials, etc.. We worked hard to be on the same page throughout and I think it shows. I feel very grateful for the opportunity to have learned so much and gained such experience… and to have a project I can walk away from proud I have my name on it.
We love a great swivel chair around here! Adding a swivel to a chair just makes it more fun. Plain and simple! It also makes it more functional in many circumstances! Nurseries, chat groups, keeping rooms, near fire places… The list goes on and on!
Many of the swivel chairs we have access to can also rock, and some even have returns on them, meaning if you spin it, it goes right back to the correct facing position after you get up! Here are a few of our favorite swivel chairs, ranging from more modern to more traditional! Swivel chairs can fit into almost anyone’s aesthetic!
For more info on any of these, just ask one of our designers! We’d love to answer any questions we can about these great swivels!
Thanks so much for stopping by today. We love having you follow along with us here! Have a great second half of the week!
You might have seen the post we did several weeks ago featuring designer Katie Carone and the living room she put together on a tighter budget! She did a beautiful job, so this time, we put designer Mary Courtney Johns to the test!
Mary Courtney has pulled together a drool-worthy bedroom that looks like it cost about three times what it actually totaled! This room is under $15,000!
Do keep in mind that this is ALL new furniture, so even if $15,000 doesn’t seem low to you, picking just a few new pieces for a certain room can really bring your existing pieces to life by only spending a fraction of this.
Our designers are experts in merging your existing furniture with perfectly selected new pieces to bring the utmost style to your space without breaking the bank!
We think Mary Courtney did a fantastic job of sourcing her specs from our more moderately priced (yet still very good quality) designer lines! Here’s her project!
Queen bed // $3530
Queen Coverlet // $455
Pair of Euro Shams // $130 each
Pair of faux fur accent pillows on bed // $210 each
Pair of Bedside Tables // $1370 each
Pair of Lamps // $345 each
8 x 10 Rug // $1865
Pair of Benches // $924 each
Artwork pair // $1500 each
Room Total // $14,808
“I started this design off with a bed that would make a statement and followed with complimentary, budget friendly options that would only elevate the overall space. These selections, being that they are neutral and transitional, can easily be moved to a guest bedroom years down the road if the homeowner is wanting a change in their own bedroom. I love a portion of high contrast in interiors and used the intensity in the footstools and artwork to play up this feature. The paint color used is Benjamin Moore Intense White, which is an almost white with a tint warm gray; a wonderful backdrop for the deeper tones so they really stand out! It looks much more gray in the image above, but on a wall, it looks whiter!”
Give Mary Courtney a call (601-853-4445) if you want to know more about any of these pieces! Way to go for pulling together such gorgeousness, Mary Courtney!
Meet Della Turner! Della is our new receptionist and we are so happy to have her as the newest member of the SummerHouse team! If you haven’t had the chance to meet her yet, do yourself a favor and get up here and introduce yourself! This woman is wonderful!
Get to know her a little better…
1. Tell us a little about yourself! Your family, where you’re from… All that good stuff!
I am Della Turner, a long time resident of Rankin Co. I am a mother of two daughters and I love being their mom! l also have the cutest dog who is a great joy in my life. Spending time with my family and good friends is what I like to do in my free time. I like to travel and see new places!
2. What was your first impression of SummerHouse?
I first went to the website and looked around at the photos and thought wow. But when I went in for my interview and started to look around, I went WOW!
3. What is your favorite item in the store right now? (We know it probably changes daily!) 😉
One of my favorite things is a black and white pillow by VRUGS. There is also a Marco chestnut/pecan chair that I love because I can see it in my home!
4. What’s the best movie you’ve seen lately?
Finding Dory. Kind of corny huh! Even though my daughters are older, we still enjoy watching Disney films together sometimes.
5. How do you take your caffeine?
My caffeine of choice is Mountain Dew!
6. What’s your favorite meal? (Can be homemade or at a restaurant!)
My favorite meal is a roast with carrots, onion, bell peppers and potatoes, slow cooked in a crock pot. Collards greens, corn bread, garlic mashed potatoes and a tall glass of sweet tea. I am a true southern girl!
7. Tell us something about yourself that we don’t know yet!
One thing that no one here knows yet is that my birth name is Della Reece. When I tell people that, they always ask if I was named after the singer Della Reese! I really don’t know, and then they ask if I sing! And the answer is YES! Mostly at church. 🙂

You need to meet our summer intern, Mollie Williams! We are so happy to have Mollie around to help us stay organized, help the designers with little projects, and to share little bits of design wisdom and reality with! Mollie, you have been a joy so far! We are so glad we get to have you for the rest of the summer! 🙂
A little Q&A with Mollie…
Tell us about yourself! Where you’re from, about your family, where you went to school… All that fun stuff!
Well, I was born in Jackson, AL and moved here to Mississippi when I was 2 years old. I am from Pearl! I have 2 older brothers and a huge family that is always there when I need them. Growing up I was a gymnast for about 13 years. I graduated from Pearl High School in 2009. I have an Associates Degree from Hinds Community College and I am a senior interior design major at the University of Southern Miss!
What was your first impression of SummerHouse?!
My first impression of SummerHouse was the people. Everyone here has been so nice and I feel like part of the family now.
What has been your favorite interior design class so far?
That’s a tough one, but so far I would say it’s a tie between Design Media and BIM (Revit) when we designed a restaurant.
What’s your favorite local restaurant in the area?
In town, Jason’s Deli, but my heart and soul would say Froghead Grill in Clinton!
How do you describe your personal design style?
My personal design style would be like contemporary, comfy, light neutral tones, with a splash of color. Modern meets Classic.
What’s your favorite way to spend a lazy weekend?
A perfect lazy weekend is a date with my bed and Netflix!
What has been your favorite type of design to work on in school? Tell us what you love about it!
So far, I like residential and restaurant design. My favorite part about residential is designing the bedroom and bathrooms. I would love to work with clients and to one day make their home comfy and accessible. To see them happy brings joy to my heart. As far as restaurant design, I like it because you can go crazy with the lights, colors, and different types of furniture. People don’t just go to restaurants to eat. At least I know I don’t! The first impression happens whenever they walk through the door.
What else do we need to know about you?!
Well, my favorite colors are green and pink. I am a Christ follower. I love animals. My family is the most important thing to me in the world. I have 5 nieces and nephews. After graduation, I will finally own a dog and therefore will become a “dog” Mommy! My fantasy career would to one day be a famous singer or end up on Television somehow.

Well, Atlanta Food and Wine Festival 2016 is officially in the books! Lisa had a blast being a part of the Rathbuns’ Watch List Event which was part of the festival! Her space turned out beautifully, and she loved getting to work with Chef John Lasater! We have heard rave reviews from attendees about the food and the beautiful space! Total WIN!
Watching the space come together was very rewarding, as are all installations! Here’s a little start-to-finish for you!
Camille, Marty, and Lisa did a fabulous job of getting things together, and the help provided by ADAC was wonderful!
Here are a few more shots. WE LOVE!
This pretty girl’s name ended up being Sassafras, and she absolutely STOLE THE SHOW! She was captured by photographer Karen Sachar, whom you can find out more about here!
Here is Lisa with all of the other talented designers who were a part of the Rathbuns event!

Beautiful work, Lisa! Every detail is perfection. And this, folks, is why she’s our design leader! 🙂
We have a brand new artist here at SummerHouse whose art we are just crazy about! Our wonderful clients seem to be just as wild about it as we are because this work sure has garnered LOTS of attention!
Meet Lynn Sanders. This pretty lady sure can create some beautiful work! Get to know her just a little bit better!
Tell us a little about yourself! Where you’re from, about your family, etc…
I grew up in Lafayette, LA but after college, and living in various other states for work, my husband and I settled in Alexandria, Louisiana, where we have lived for the past fourteen years. We have a sixteen year old son, two cats and two dogs.
How long have you been painting? What got you into painting?
I was always your typical creative person growing up; taking art lessons and being in charge of school dance decorations. Prior to my art career I did management and marketing/special events for shopping centers. So there was a history of creativity. Finally, about ten years ago my cousin inspired me to start painting again. She is also an artist and lives in Memphis. I began by creating paintings for children’s rooms which morphed into painting abstractly. Six years ago I quit my day job and have never looked back.
How do you describe your style? It’s so beautiful, whimsy, and unique!! We love it!
I am an abstract expressionist so my style is free flowing. I do not get bogged down in the minute details of painting, but look at the big picture. Although the pieces take a while to complete I think they all reflect my impatience. The acrylic medium and tool I paint with really are reflective of my impatient nature. Although the pieces may take a while to complete my painting process is fast. I would love to paint small but my process just does not lend itself to small formats. Painting large is my real passion.
We have a great selection of your abstract pieces in our showroom. Is this your primary style, or do you have other styles/mediums you use that we don’t show here at SummerHouse?
I am always trying new processes and I feel my strokes and compositions have evolved over the past ten years. So you never know I may have a new style on the horizon. Lately I have incorporated linen textures to my canvases and this is something I am currently experimenting with. In the past, I have painted koi fish and birds. They are very specific to me and I do not paint the koi fish much anymore (painted them from 2006 – 2012). I have done birds since 2012 when I retired the koi. I think there are seven or eight bird paintings hanging in homes across the South. I do a couple of them a year. It’s good to step away from the abstracts for a bit.
What is the most exciting design project you’ve ever gotten to be a part of?!
Gosh, the best part of my job is going in so many wonderful homes!!! However, my most exciting project was being asked to do Charley G’s restaurant in Lafayette. The restaurant was being remodeled and they wanted a more contemporary feel and used my art to convey that idea. So all the artwork in the restaurant is mine. That’s pretty cool.
What would you say inspires your work most?
My mood, music, and my love for beautiful things are the biggest influences on my paintings. Whether it is a beautiful horizon or a lovely home, those are the things that inspire me to create. It is so humbling to see my work in the context of a beautiful room that has been artfully designed, either by the owner or interior designer. I have always had a passion for decorating so my work goes hand in hand with that.
What else do we need to know about you?!
I spent a month last summer living in an art colony on Nantucket Island. I have many funny stories from that experience. I had a wonderful time and hope to do it again in the future. Besides that, I love the beach, animals, tennis, novels by Jane Austen and the South!

Many thanks to Lynn for allowing us to get to know her a little bit better! Stop by the showroom or check out our online shop to see more of Lynn’s work! It’s safe to say that we’re obsessed with her beautiful colors and style! 🙂
We gave our newest designer Katie Carone the task of putting together a living room with all new furniture but on a somewhat tight budget! She’s put this entire room together for under $15,000! Now keep in mind that this is ALL new furniture, so even if $15,000 doesn’t seem low to you, picking just a few new pieces for a certain room can really bring your existing pieces to life by only spending a fraction of this.
We love the beautiful living room she’s put together using our more well-priced designer lines! Here is more information on each piece!
Art // $1140
Cowhide Rug // $540
Grace Coffee Table // $2245
Callie Lamps // $685 each
Cole Drinking Table // $1085
Albion Sofa with three contrast pillows // $2431
Franco Chairs // $1716 each
Jolene Side Table // $855
Trudy Oval Side Table // $855
8 x 10 Sedona Sisal Rug // $390
Grand total // $14,343
Katie went with one of Lisa’s favorite design M.O.s that she calls “high/low.” This is where, even if most pieces in a space are budget conscious (or “low”), splurging on a couple of items (“high”) can really elevate the level of the entire design. Katie’s splurges were the lamps and the drinking table.
“The lamps are very transitional pieces and could be used throughout the house in several different places. On console tables, on bedside tables… So many places! And I love the acrylic base. It gives it an element of high design.”
“I aboslutely drool over that drinking table. Black and gold is my obsession! I know it’s more expensive, but when you find one piece you absolutely love, you just can’t compromise. It gives the room that wow factor!”
“I love the idea of ordering a sofa that comes standard with contrast pillows like this one. You can order them in a different fabric and use them somewhere completely different, like on a guest bed or in some side chairs.”
“Revere Pewter is one of my absolute favorite paint colors– it would be really nice in this room. I love that you can use browns and grays with it!”

Thank you so much, Katie! We love what you’ve pulled together! If you have any more questions about these pieces, give Katie a call! 601-853-4445
