Meet Our Intern Emily Simmering

Last week you met Katie Coit, our summer intern from Mississippi State University. Today we want you to meet Emily Simmering from Mississippi College! Emily is so much fun! We hope you get the chance to meet her before her stint with us is complete!

Let’s get on to a quick Q&A with her.SummerHouse Interior Design Intern Emily Simmering

Tell us about yourself!

I’m Emily Simmering and I am from Gulf Breeze, FL which is a small town next to Pensacola Beach. I currently go to Mississippi College. I am the youngest of three with an older brother and older sister. My family and I are really close and family is everything to me. I absolutely love art, and painting with watercolor is my favorite.

What made you want to go into Interior Design?

Growing up I always loved art but never thought about interior design until my senior year of high school. That year, my mom and dad bought their dream home but it was an older home and needed to be redone. During that time I was able to see the design process and help with the finish selections and that is when I fell in love with the Interior Design process.

What place in the world have you visited that left you most inspired to design?

A place that has inspired me most in design is actually my hometown. Gulf Breeze is located in between Pensacola and Pensacola Beach, which have two completely different styles. Downtown Pensacola is influenced by the French culture with a lot of exposed brick and restored wood. I love how Gulf Breeze goes from the French influence of Pensacola to the beachy design of Pensacola Beach to everything in between. It is a good showcase of the many different design styles out there.

What Interior Design class has been your favorite and why?

It is hard to determine which class has been my favorite so far… It is between hand rendering or Interior Design Two. Hand rendering really made me think outside the box and let me use my artist background. Interior Design Two focused on residential design and I was able to see the whole process and take a project from beginning to the end. Both were really fun.

Where do you see yourself ten years from now?

I have no idea where I’ll be in ten years but I do know I want to be in residential design. I would love to work with a company like SummerHouse and eventually have my own firm. But I do know I want to be on the coast somewhere! Not positive where just yet, but I know I can’t be away from the beach for too long!

/ / / / / / / / / /

Emily, you are making us want to plan a trip to Gulf Breeze and go back to design school all at once! Thank you so much for sharing! We love having ya around 😉

Long Distance Design

This design project was done without the clients and the designer ever meeting face to face! Incredible! // alwayssummerblog.com

Designer Elish Phares Moon recently wrapped up a design project in Texas after a long distance working relationship with her clients, whom she has never before met face to face! This project is so interesting because it shows us what fabulous designers, understanding clients, great communication, and a great delivery team can accomplish! We asked Elish to share a little more about the project and how it worked because we are just so darn impressed with how it all turned out!

“In December of 2016, I had an inquiry about design services and potential work with some clients in Spring Valley, Texas. This young couple had just purchased their dream home and had budgeted for working with a designer to nail down the look they wanted in their main rooms. Focusing on the dining room, living room, and master bedroom, we discussed design direction in depth and committed to a tight timeline. Because the couple wanted to be able to move in to completely furnished rooms by their closing date, I brainstormed the initial design scheme with Lisa Palmer, SummerHouse’s owner and principal designer, to speed up the process. (I got my start at SummerHouse as her assistant before moving on to a full time designer.) She and I work well together and were able to streamline the couple’s vision into a beautiful and functional design for their young family quickly.”

The key to working with a client long-distance is transparency and communication. We put together a detailed presentation packet complete with samples and swatches that were clearly labeled. Two of my strengths are organization and communication, so I actually really enjoy working on out-of-
state projects! Our clients asked detailed questions and gave us great feedback. After a few minor changes we got everything on order and began our countdown until the install! Thanks to understanding clients dedicated to quality design, trusted vendors, an experienced delivery team, and a little patience, this project evolved into a finished design that I take pride in and that my clients enjoy!”

Beautiful job, Elish! Such a great result. We love seeing a good, challenging design project come to completion! 🙂

The Best Soft Bedroom Colors

Last week we shared our designers’ picks for dark and cozy bedroom paint colors. Today, we’re sharing their brighter, airier picks! Paint colors can be very tricky, so whenever you are in doubt, hire a designer! We promise that you’ll save time and money in the long run if you do it right the first time. Our designers actually love picking out paint colors, so with any one of them helping you, you cannot go wrong!

With all that said, here are some of their favorites when it comes to softer paint colors!

Design Assistant Camille at SummerHouse Ridgeland says, “I enjoy a pretty, crisp white, like White Dove, for a bedroom because it gives a clean slate to work with when selecting the main upholstery items. You can accent white walls with Drapery, Pillows, and maybe a unique bedside table or chest.”

SummerHouse | Oxford Interior Designer Laurie Conway’s pick is Lullaby by Sherwin Williams.

“I love BM November Rain,” says Ridgeland Interior Designer Katy Sanders.”It is a beautiful greige green you cannot go wrong with!”

“You know me, I’m one extreme or the other,” says SummerHouse designer and owner Lisa Palmer of her picks. “I love something black like Onyx, or I go with White Dove. Oh, and I love Sherwin Williams White Dogwood that I used in a client’s bedroom. It is the prettiest pink.”

“Pale Oak by Benjamin Moore is such a brilliant color!” says Ridgeland Interior Designer Katherine Shelton. “I love it on the walls of a master bedroom. It will go warmer or cooler depending on the fabrics and finishes you surround it with.”

Oxford Interior Designer Rebecca Cornelius says “Collingwood or Revere Pewter BM are soft neutrals & light warm greys that you can use anywhere indoors safely.  Simply White and White Dove are the best all round go-to whites.  You can put anything with them!”

“I’ve noticed when choosing paint colors I tend to be drawn toward colors with a greige undertone,” says Ridgeland Interior Designer Elish Moon. “Although I haven’t tried it, Benjamin Moore’s “Gray Wisp” seems like it would lend itself well to creating a serene environment. This soft color can go blue or green, depending on the room, and is low commitment and high style!”

Ridgeland Design Assistant Anabel Webb’s lighter pick is Decorator’s White, although right now she’s really more into the deeper hues!

Meet Our Intern Katie Coit

We are SO lucky up here this summer! Not only do we have one great intern at our Ridgeland shop, but we have two fabulous interns! Emily Simmering and Katie Coit have done an amazing job of getting new project binders organized, getting fabric samples neatly folded, and doing research on upcoming projects among other things!

Today, we want you to meet Katie! This cute girl has been so much fun to get to know, so we want you to get the chance to get to know her too! She might even be along on a home visit or two with some of our designers, so heads up! 🙂

SummerHouse Interior Design Intern Katie CoitTell us a little about yourself!

I grew up in Flowood, MS, and I graduated from Jackson Preparatory School in 2013.  I will be returning to Mississippi State University in the fall to complete my final year in the Interior Design program!

What made you want to go into Interior Design?

When I was growing up, I always loved and appreciated aesthetically pleasing spaces and how they made me feel.  I liked to study buildings and rooms by how they were constructed, designed, decorated, etc. I decided during my senior year of high school that I wanted to pursue a career in Interior Design so that I could create living and work environments that would make people enjoy their surroundings.

What’s your favorite publication to go to for design inspo and why?

I have acquired quite the magazine collection over the years with subscriptions to Veranda, Interior Design Magazine, Architectural Digest, and others. I tear out pages from the magazines that inspire me and put them in a journal I started in high school. I also spend my spare time on Houzz and Pinterest.

How would you describe your personal design style?

My design style is full of neutral colors…. My friends love to comment on the rare occasion where I end up wearing color or selecting something that has color on it (I blame years of shopping at Limited Too when I was younger for my phobia of colors.) I love spaces and pieces that are timeless. I also love for my spaces to be clean and organized. So, I guess you should imagine a white room with timeless furniture and everything in its place, and you would have my style in a nutshell.

What Interior Design class has been your favorite and why?

In our studio class last fall, we were all assigned different countries to research and design a restaurant for.  We had a day where we had to bring in a dish from our country and share with the class what we researched and how it impacted the design of our restaurant. My partner and I were given Japan, and we created a contemporary sushi bar based off of an old castle in Osaka, Japan.

So fun, Katie! No wonder we like you so much 🙂
Stay tuned for an interview with Emily coming soon! And thanks for stopping by today! We hope you had the BEST weekend!

SummerHouse | Ridgeland design assistant Krystle Short loves colors in the deep green family. “I am infatuated with deep, sultry greens right now! Q&A With April Shelby Crowell

April Shelby Crowell of A. Shelby Pottery via alwayssummerblog.com

As you might have noticed from social media and from our web store, we have a new local potter represented at SummerHouse and we are EXCITED!

Our friend April Shelby Crowell, the mastermind behind A. Shelby Pottery, was kind enough to take the time to answer a few questions for us so we could all get to know her better! Lisa and Marty fell in love with her pottery at our Lee Loves Local event (along with Traditional Home Magazine, in which she was just featured!) and it’s been true love ever since. Let’s get on with our chat with April!

April Shelby Crowell of A. Shelby Pottery via alwayssummerblog.comTell us a little about yourself, please ma’am!

I grew up in Florence, MS with my parents and older brother. I’m really fond of that small town childhood!  I’ve always had a passion for the arts and my parents have always been super supportive of that. Now I live in Flowood with my husband, Jon Richard. He is the best encourager, and his let’s-make-it-happen attitude is one of my biggest inspirations. And we’re pretty obsessed with our dog, Potter. Yes, we named him after my profession!

How long have you been creating pottery?

I took my first pottery class in the first semester of my freshman year of college (2008), and seriously I was in love with it before class even started! I continued to take pottery classes all throughout college, graduated from Miss. State University in 2013 with a BFA, emphasis in ceramics, and have been making pottery on my own ever since!

April Shelby Crowell of A. Shelby Pottery via alwayssummerblog.comWhat inspires your style? It’s so fun and different!

That’s a tough one because I’m inspired by so much.  Specifically, this Gold Collection came to life from my love for handmade, functional objects mixed with the simple, chic style I admire in interior design and home decor.  I feel like in our area when people think “pottery” they think “country” or “rustic.” While I do admire and appreciate that look, it just isn’t my personal style.  So I started to create these minimalist forms using a monotone color scheme. Even though I am my own worst critic, I really liked the pottery I was making so I just rolled with it!

April Shelby Crowell of A. Shelby Pottery via alwayssummerblog.comWhat is your favorite thing about creating pottery?

Again, so many inspirations and so many reasons why. I just love the whole process of working with my hands to make stuff. Anything, really! I just stick with clay most of the time! It’s crafty and challenging. Pottery is a long process so when products are finally complete it’s really quite satisfying!

What else do we need to know about you and your pottery?!

Recently someone told me, “I see your pottery when I walk into my living room and it just makes me so happy.” I don’t say that to sound boastful, I say it because that’s one of the many reasons I love doing what I do.  If my pottery makes someone happy then I’m happy too.  When you purchase a piece of A. Shelby Pottery you’re not just picking up any ordinary object off the shelf, you’re getting a piece of art that is very special to me because a lot of time and craftsmanship goes into each piece. I hope you enjoy my pottery just as much as I enjoy making it for you!

Thank you so much, April! Your work is inspiring and we are honored to carry it 🙂

Be sure to stop by either SummerHouse location to shop April’s work, or you can check some of it out on our web store!

We hope you’re having a great week!

Meet Laurie Conway

Meet Laurie Conway of SummerHouse | Oxford Happy almost weekend, y’all!

There’s a new face in the Oxford shop that you need to get to know! May we introduce to you Laurie Conway! Laurie is a fabulously talented designer who we are thrilled to have as part of our Oxford team and SummerHouse family! Get to know her just a little bit better with a quick Q&A…

1. Tell us about yourself! Where you’re from, about your family, where you went to school…

I grew up in Tupelo and studied Interior Design at Mississippi State. After graduation I moved to Jackson where I have worked in Design for over 20 years. I have two amazing children, Ben and Julia, who are my heart and soul. I have family in Oxford and northeast Mississippi as well as in Jackson. I’m so excited to be back in the Oxford area!

2. Give us a quick overview of your design background!

I started out with an architectural firm and quickly realized I loved residential design even more. I have worked in design for over 25 years, both on my own and for other designers in Jackson.
3. What got you interested in working in the Interior Design field?
I have always loved to design and create things. When I was young, I loved making furniture for my Barbies. My Mom says as a child I could be content for hours with typing paper, a ruler and a pencil. I have never wanted do anything else, so it is definitely my passion.
4. What is your favorite source of design inspiration and why?

I’m not a huge fan of digital media, but I love to flip through a magazine over and over again. I have stacks of them on the floor by my bed. I love Traditional Home, Veranda, Milieu and Elle Decor just to name a few!

5. How would you describe your personal taste in design?

I love clean lines mixed with antiques and modern pieces, and layering with accessories and rugs for texture.

6. What is the most inspiring place you’ve visited lately?

New Orleans is always an inspiration to me, so I go there as often as possible. Walking around in the Garden District and sitting in Audubon Park are my happy places.

7. What is your favorite way to spend a day off?

I love working in my yard and potting flowers. I love to paint as well as faux finish. Creating is so relaxing to me.

8. What’s the best movie you’ve ever seen and why?

Fried Green Tomatoes is one of my favorite movies. I love how it depicts Southern women’s lives and strength.

9. How do you take your caffeine?

Black!

10. What is your favorite part of being in the SummerHouse family so far?!

I am so excited to be a part of this great team. The designers are so incredibly talented and welcoming and Lisa is of course fabulous!!

Thank you so much, Laurie! We are thrilled to have you on board!

Happening in Atlanta

Lisa Palmer in the Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles Southeastern Designer Showhouse

We told y’all a few weeks ago about Lisa’s involvement in the Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles Southeastern Showhouse & Gardens. Remember seeing that here? Well, the time has come for the showhouse to actually HAPPEN!

Lisa Palmer in the Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles Southeastern Designer ShowhouseWe are SO proud of Lisa and the beautiful room she has crafted for the stunning home in which this year’s showhouse takes place. Lisa created a beautiful, inspired space that we hope all of you will get to see in person!

The showhouse starts April 20 and is open Thursdays through Sundays until May 14.

Lisa told us a little about her room and what inspired her design!

“My space is on the second level of the home. It’s a study/reading room. I loved the space when I first saw it because of the fantastic natural light that the space gets! It’s not a very big space – It’s about 17 feet by 13 feet- but I had a good amount of space to work. It’s on the second level, which houses several bedrooms, and I’m right off of a gorgeous staircase.

Our inspiration for the space was springtime! I also took inspiration from the architecture of the home which had a real traditional feel, so I couldn’t go super modern. We wallpapered the space in a gorgeous Philip Jeffries ivory raffia wallcovering that has a little sheen to it. And because it was spring, my color scheme was ivory, black, and fern green. The Pantone color of the year is this particular fern green so I went with that because it reminded me of springtime!

I have some comfortable seating in there as well as some interesting pattern. I also wanted to showcase Mississippi artists. I wanted the people of the region to see how talented the artists in our area are. So I used one of the walls as a showcase for our Mississippi artists. I love how that art wall turned out!

Lisa Palmer in the Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles Southeastern Designer Showhouse

The room overall has sort of my signature look with high contrast. My drapery is an ivory linen when a beautiful quarter inch glazed black linen flange all the way around. We did this beautiful ivory armless Hickory Chair sofa in an ivory linen velvet, and I did a really cool armless chair in a Zak and Fox pattern of deep charcoal and ivory with a very gardeny pattern. Then there’s this fern green chair by Lee Industries with this really cool braid that brings in the black and ivory around the bottom.

All of this is sitting on top of this sisal and wool greek key rug by Patterson Flynn Martin. And to top it all off, I’ve got this really killer, semi modern yet earthy light fixture in a bronze and gold that came from the showroom of Paul Plus at ADAC.

So this room is bright, it’s fun, it has a little traditional spin and a little modern spin, and it’s very springy.

This showhouse is really something to see. People need to come over and tour it! Mississippi is represented in this house, so we are really excited to be a part of it.”

/ / / / / / / / / /

Be sure to keep up with all things showhouse related by following them on Instagram! We really hope you get a chance to get over to Atlanta to see all of the prettiness for yourself! The proceeds benefit the Atlanta History Center!

AND! Don’t forget that Lisa and Marty are headed to High Point Market this weekend, too, so keep up with all of their market fun by following our hashtag #SHGoesToMarket 🙂 We can’t wait to see what all they find!
