The second of our recent new faces around here (you can see the first one here!) is Lisa’s new assistant Mary Courtney Johns! Since Mary Courtney went to Mississippi State, she already knew about half of the staff up here, so the transition into the new work environment was made a little easier because of all the familiar faces!

We asked Mary Courtney a few questions to get to know her a little bit better! Let’s get started, shall we?

Meet Mary Courtney // SummerHouse // Ridgeland, MS

1. Where are you from and what brought you to Jackson?

I was raised in the Mississippi Delta, Greenville being the place I call home. I met my husband soon after graduating from Mississippi State and we moved to Jackson after our wedding. He is from Brandon and we are surrounded by family (which will be very convenient for Baby #1 coming in January!).

2. Tell us a little about your design background.

I started out my career working for a local fabric store as a sales associate/design consultant and then moved on to a local high end design shop, at which I learned a wealth of information and skills which I will continue to hone and take with me, and all of which I have brought to SummerHouse!

3. What piece of furniture on the showroom floor do you have the biggest crush on? 🙂

First off, I must say I would have a secret love affair with every piece of art in this place. My love for art is just as strong as my love for interior design, watercolor being my own medium of choice. But if I had to choose ONE furniture piece, the Homer Chest would be it. I love its clean simplicity, beautiful wood tone, and the large amount of storage!

4. What is one of your favorite shelter publications?

One blog I find myself going to often is Design Sponge, I think because of the range of design related information it offers. You can find interior spaces, entertainment ideas, innovative products, and DIY projects (which I am ALL about). I love to get crafty!

5. Are you a morning person or a night owl?

Definitely a night owl. Anyone who knows me is well aware that a full conversation will not take place until a good hour has passed since my stepping foot out of bed.

6. What’s the best movie you’ve seen lately?

Captain Phillips and Prisoners before that. Both met my high expectations!

7. What is your favorite room in your house and why?

My baby’s nursery. I have been working on that room since I found out I was pregnant and it is just now beginning to come together. I have made the bumper pad and crib skirt myself and next will be looking into drapery. I also found a very feminine dresser at an antique store in which I will be refinishing. I believe anything that can be reinvented and given new life will add nothing but character to any room!

8. If we were to follow you around on a day off, what might we find you doing?

Sewing or painting. I always feel the need to have some sort of project in the works.

9. What’s your favorite thing about SummerHouse thus far?

Within my first two weeks here, there were four mini celebrations (Boss’ Day, two birthdays, and a farewell) complete with wine and sweet treats! I love that everyone is considered an important part of the team as a whole and my welcome has been warm and inviting.

10. What else do we need to know about you?

I love traveling, whether that means a weekend trip or to be away months on end! I thrive on new experiences and love when my outlook and opinions are challenged. But I also love a quiet night at home. Both are essential!

Thanks so much, Mary Court! SO glad to have you on the team! 🙂
