Meet Jen!

We have a new face around here to introduce you to! Meet Jen Kadar, our new receptionist! She’s recently taken over the role of greeting people who come into the store as well as keeping things sane at the front desk and with the phones!

Jaclyn, who has moved on to new ventures, left some big receptionist shoes to fill, but Jen seems to be fitting right on in and not missing any beats! We’re so glad to have her here! Since you’ll be seeing a lot of her, it’s probably time for you to get to know her a little better! Let’s get to some questions!

1. Tell us a little about you! Where you grew up, where you went to school, what you studied…

I grew up mainly in West Monroe, LA, went to undergrad at Louisiana Tech University, graduating with a Bachelors of Fine Arts in Photography and a Minor in Architecture. After graduating, I ran away from LA as fast as possible to Nashville, TN. From Nashville, I moved to Glasgow, Scotland to attend the University of Glasgow and graduated with a Master of Letters in 19th Century Art and Design History.

Meet Jen // SummerHouse // www.alwayssummerblog.com2. We hear you’re married to a Scottish guy! How did y’all meet?

When I moved to Glasgow for grad school, I knew ONE person in the whole of Scotland! My roommate Gillian and I had worked at a ranch together in Colorado years before, and she was my Glasgow connection. When I arrived, she was out of town, but left me a list of her friends and their numbers, saying one of them had a car and would take me on a drive through the country… Simon was the guy with the car (and having a car in Glasgow is a BIG deal – I lucked out)! We met the 2nd day I was in Scotland, starting dating 2 weeks later and the rest is history!

3. What is your favorite thing about SummerHouse so far?

Definitely the people. Everyone has been so welcoming! It’s great to be working with a group of talented, creative and fun people. It is also really pleasant to work in a beautiful space surrounded by such pretty things every day!

4. Since you’re new to the Jackson area, what aspect of the city have you been most impressed by?

When my husband and I bought our house, we didn’t realize we were less than a mile from the Reservoir and the Natchez Trace Trails! It’s great to be able to drive down the road and have such a beautiful area to explore. We’ve also started exploring the restaurant and bar scene and it seems like there’s a plethora of great options. I love having a good balance of nature and city!

5. What’s your favorite book or movie and why?

Hmm… it’s hard to choose! For books, my favorites are Jitterbug Perfume by Tom Robbins because he is just beyond brilliant, and The Great Divorce and The Space Trilogy by C.S. Lewis because I love everything that C.S. Lewis has ever written. The way he describes fictional worlds is so beautiful and interesting, I just read his books over and over again and always see something new. For movies, my favorite is Love Song for Bobby Long, which most people have never heard of, but it’s such an honest portrayal of people struggling with their pasts and trying to better themselves.

6. If you could take home one piece of furniture from the showroom floor, which piece would it be?!

I LOVE the grey Whitaker sectional! It’s huge and so comfortable, but also structured and modern with so many beautiful details. I love anything with nail head detailing!

7. What is your favorite holiday? Why?

My favorite holiday is definitely Thanksgiving, because it’s like Christmas without the ulterior motive of presents. It’s just all about family coming together, and that’s when my entire family comes down. I also come from a long line of crazy good cooks, so the food is to die for. Family and food, can’t get any better than that!

8. What else do we need to know about you?!

Well, hmm… I’m kind of a jack of all trades and have dabbled in so many different things. As a kid, I took every different kind of lesson you can think of: dance, gymnastics, tennis, xylophone, swimming, soccer, etc.. Then as I got older, my creative outlet went a million directions: architecture, painting, drawing, photography, jewelry making, graphic design, and even song-writing. My brother and I wrote alot of songs together when I lived in Nashville, and I have a half-finished EP that we started recording with good friends that got interrupted when I moved to Scotland. I played my first and last show in Nashville at my going away party! The past couple of years, my husband and I bought our first home and then relocated to Ridgeland and purchased our second home, so renovating houses has taken up all of my creative energy!

Thank you so much, Jen! We love it all! It’s such a pleasure to have this girl greeting us every time we walk in the door. Next time you come see us, we think you’ll agree! 😉
