It’s time for another edition of Inside The Orange Box, where our designers take a moment to talk through common design issues or give little pieces of design advice to you guys! We love picking their minds about specific design-related topics! If you’ve ever got a question you’d like to see our designers’ input on, feel free to comment with your topic idea and we’ll do our best to work it in!

Today’s question is…

When designing a dining room, what do you as a designer find to be the best starting point? What do you pick out first?

INTERIOR DESIGNER LISA PALMER

“When designing a dining room, I usually start with the table. It’s the focal point in the room… usually. In decorating, there are no hard fast rules. So, sometimes I have started with a beautiful gilt mirror and then selected the console for the long wall and so on. The mirror would become the star of the room.”

INTERIOR DESIGNER TODD PRINCE

“With a dining room I love to start out with the rug if one is needed.  That helps establish a stylistic approach and a color palette.”

INTERIOR DESIGNER MARY COURTNEY JOHNS

“The light fixture above the table is often times the focal point so I would consider that to be a major decision when designing a dining room. No matter the style that is being aimed for, this component is crucial for setting the tone for the rest of the room. A statement needs to be made!”

INTERIOR DESIGNER CAMILLE HOLLAND PARKER

“After the table, of course, I love to start with a beautiful wall covering in a dining room! It is fun and can be applied to walls or unexpectedly to the ceiling! It really elevates the design of the space!”

INTERIOR DESIGNER ELISH PHARES MOON

“Dining rooms are fun to design because they don’t have many essentials (dining table, dining chairs, etc…) so there is room, dare I say need, for something bold. There is freedom to design with an unexpected element because formal dining rooms aren’t often used on a daily basis, so wear and tear, neutrality, and practicality aren’t necessarily the driving force. I love to try a rich paint color, a beautiful wall covering, or a bold pattern on drapery. The dining room in itself has the potential to be a homeowner’s best art piece.”

INTERIOR DESIGN KATY HINES

“The CHANDELIER!  Lighting can really set the tone for the whole design – dressy, formal, relaxed, informal…  It can also define the style of the room – traditional, modern, or transitional.”
