Meet Marguerite!

06
OCTOBER
2015

We have a pretty new face around SummerHouse for you to meet! Marguerite is our newest design assistant and she is fitting right in! She is doing an incredible job so far. We are thankful to have her around!!

Let’s get to know her a little better with our typical “Q&A of the new person!” 😉

Meet Marguerite, new SummerHouse Design Assistant! // www.alwayssummerblog.com

1. Tell us about yourself! Where you’re from, about your family, where you live…

I grew up right here in Ridgeland, MS and I am the oldest of 4. I have two brothers and one sister, as well as my mom, my dad, and a dog!

2. Where did you go to school? What was your major?

I went to Mississippi State and I majored in Interior Design

3. What was your favorite class throughout all of college?!

History of Interiors abroad in London for a month. It was such an awesome experience!!

4. Where did you go on your last vacation?

Charleston, SC and it was fabulous!

5. What’s your favorite magazine and why?!

Any design magazine. I can’t get enough!

6. If you had to choose one celebrity to hang out with for a day, who would it be and why?

I am not a huge T-Swift fan, but if I chose her, she would probably bring her squad so I would get to chill will all the celebs!

If not Taylor, I’d choose Nichole Kidman because I would love to visit her Australian Farmhouse. It looks just beautiful from what I have seen.

7. What do you think of SummerHouse so far?!

It’s fabulous! Couldn’t surround myself with better, more hard working people!

8. Describe yourself in 5 words or less!

A silly, easy going, people person

/ / / / /

Thank you Marguerite! Keep up all of the awesome work! 🙂

Luxury Reads

14
SEPTEMBER
2015

We just got in a huge shipment of INCREDIBLE books from Assouline, a company with the coolest reads around! All of them are just as pretty sitting on your coffee table as they are interesting to go through. Here are some of our top picks, although this is not all of the new ones we’ve gotten in!

Brand new shipment of Assouline books // SummerHouse // www.alwayssummerblog.com

A little about some of these lovely reads…

HUNTING: LEGENDARY RIFLES“Relating anecdotes of expeditions in different countries and exploring various traditions, Hunting: Legendary Rifles combines the thrill of the hunt with the history of the arms’ rich historic past, from creation and refinement of each gun to exhilarating examples of its use.”

CRAFT COCKTAILS“Craft Cocktails explores the new golden age of the cocktail as a culinary art form. Brian Van Flandern shares some of his famous recipes conceived while working as the head mixologist for Michelin three-star chef Thomas Keller at Per Se in New York. Additionally, Van Flandern has collected recipes from some of the best craft cocktail lounges in the city. From garnishes and glassware to temperature and balance, His original recipes can be found at bars in New York, London, Paris, Hong Kong, Singapore, and dozens of other major cities around the world.”

AMERICAN BEAUTY“Photographed by Vogue alumna Claiborne Swanson Frank, American Beauty is a tribute to the women who symbolize our country today—from Jenna Lyons to Lisa Mayock, Solange Knowles to Lily Aldridge—each of whom possesses an original blend of grit, grace, glamour, and gravitas that make them fitting exemplars of kaleidoscopic American beauty.”

IN THE SPIRIT OF THE HAMPTONS – From the glamorous parties and unparalleled beaches to the mega-estates and its storied history, the Hamptons are magnetic. This beautifully illustrated updated edition of In the Spirit of the Hamptons by Kelly Killoren Bensimon, including a new foreword by Pamela Fiori, sends the reader on a personal tour of the many hamlets that make up the Hamptons—each with its own charm—from iconic restaurants such as Southampton’s Sant’Ambroeus or the renowned Parrish Art Museum in Water Mill or the ultra high-end shopping scene in East Hampton.”

Designer Of The Week: Katy Hines

28
AUGUST
2015

Our newest designer of the week is bride-to-be Katy Hines! We’re loving the things that have been inspiring her and catching her eye lately! Keep reading… >>>

SummerHouse Designer of the Week: Katy Hines // www.alwayssummerblog.com

1) What project have you been most excited about working on lately?! What do you love about this project?

I recently completed the lighting specifications for a new construction home in Chattanooga, Tennessee.

The client’s home is a rustic modern approach in design style. Lighting selections that blended effortlessly with the style of the home and furnishings were key to the success of the design. Style, scale, proportion and function are critical details when designing lighting plans, and when done correctly, it can make such a big impact on the overall aesthetic. I really view it as a work of art! I enjoyed the process and the end-result turned out beautifully!

2) Is there a color or type of pattern you’ve been really into lately that you find yourself reaching for when putting together presentations?

Here is a Hickory Chair pattern I have been reaching for a lot. These colors and this pattern have really caught my eye lately.

Hickory Chair 4101-95 // www.alwayssummerblog.com

I am also loving the warmth, great mix of textures and overall style of this vignette on our floor:

SummerHouse Designer of the Week: Katy Hines // www.alwayssummerblog.com

3) What inspires you most as a designer?

My clients inspire me most. Without them, we wouldn’t be here! I love the challenge of creating functional and beautiful spaces that are personal and tailored to each client’s own style and interests.

SummerHouse Designer of the Week: Katy Hines // www.alwayssummerblog.com

When initially working on the conceptual design of a project, I often turn to some of the best in the business. Trade magazines like Milieu Magazine and Atlanta Homes and Lifestyles offer great sources of inspiration from renowned designers all over the world! Not to mention the library of published design books we have here at our fingertips!

And I cannot forget to mention the people I work with. We have such a great team of designers and support staff. We all work closely together and inspire each other everyday!

4) Tell us how you think you’ve grown as a designer of the years!

I have learned that communication is key when working with clients. Styles and interests, likes and dislikes, and the lifestyles and patterns of people are all different. Melding your talent with the client’s vision is what truly makes you successful in this business.

2015

We are thrilled to announce that interior designer Barbara Westbrook will be at SummerHouse signing her brand new book Gracious Rooms on September 17th from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m.!

Barbara is extremely talented, so we look forward to picking her design brain while she’s here! 😉

Michael J. Clement Lamps

22
JULY
2015

We are carrying a new line here at SummerHouse that we are SO excited about called M. Clement Designs! Michael Clement, owner and founder, has a beautiful line of one-of-a-kind lamps and bowls that are all hand thrown and hand painted. Each is even signed, so his designs are true works of art! And customization is available!

Michael was kind enough to do a mini interview for us so we could get to know more about him and his company!

M. Clement Designs at SummerHouse in Ridgeland, MS // www.alwayssummerblog.com

M. Clement Designs at SummerHouse in Ridgeland, MS // www.alwayssummerblog.com

1) Tell us about yourself and your tie to New Orleans!

I was born and raised in New Orleans, and have lived here nearly my whole life, except for the six years I spent at LSU studying Landscape Architecture. I have said that I am genetically incapable of living anywhere else. New Orleans has a great sense of community. I love how this community has left its mark on the landscape of New Orleans. Whether it is through its architecture, food, or music, this city has a soul, layers of life like I have not seen anywhere else.

2) Your lamps and accessories are incredible! How long has ceramics been something you’ve been into and how did you get into it?

In the late 1990’s I worked at a lamp company, Burts Cason, in Baton Rouge on the weekends (because Landscape Architecture is not known for its high pay). I was painting their shades and doing basic gilding and painting. It was there that Kay Cason taught me the technique of gilding. Working there sparked the fire.

In 2001, I bought a bag of clay and made a small urn for a personal project that looked like a temple and gilded it in silver. This led to me making a replica of a house for a friend, a storage box for another and a lamp as a wedding gift.

I thought back to my working at Burts Cason and recalled how much I loved going to the studio. By this time the landscape field was on the decline during the economic downturn and I decided to change fields. I put together 6 slab built lamp base shapes and showed at High Point Market.

From those 6 slab built shapes we expanded to 20 plus shapes. I found a potter in Lafayette, Bruce O’dell, who throws some of our designs on a wheel completing the line.

M. Clement Designs at SummerHouse in Ridgeland, MS // www.alwayssummerblog.com

3) Do you have a favorite item in your current line? Tell us about it.

Like children I love all of my work equally. My favorites are always changing. Sometimes a client will come up with a unique color and pattern combination on a traditional piece that will make me see it differently.

We really enjoy the “brushstroke” technique we are doing now. It is a technique that needs to be done somewhat quickly making the pattern more expressive. We are also exploring shapes from the mid-century and are curious to see where it will lead.

M. Clement Designs at SummerHouse in Ridgeland, MS // www.alwayssummerblog.com

4) Do you have any fun summer plans?!

Because I love working in the studio and the business is relatively young, it does not leave much time for travel. My partner and I may take a stay-cation in the French Quarter and play tourist for the weekend. It is great to see your city from a different perspective.

/ / / / /

Thank you Michael!

Be sure to come see his stunning pieces in person next time you’re in the area! We currently have several styles on our showroom floor! And as always, thanks for stopping by today!

Meet Melissa!

08
JULY
2015

We have a beautiful new face to introduce you to today! Meet Melissa Bryant, our new receptionist! We have had a lot of rearranging going on up here lately (you know we like to keep things from getting boring!), so if you haven’t been in in a few weeks, you’ll find Melissa at the front where Danielle used to be! Danielle is taking Camille’s place as design assistant since Camille has moved up to Designer! We are so proud of our talented and versatile team!

Anyway, enough about that! Let’s get to know the new girl! 😉

Meet Melissa Bryant! // www.alwayssummerblog.com

Tell us about yourself! Where you’re from, where you went to school, what you majored in, if you have any pets… All that good stuff!

Well, I’m from Madison, MS! I graduated from The University of Southern Mississippi in 2014 and received my Bachelor of Fine Arts with emphasis in Graphic Design and I’ve been working with various businesses and private clientele with logos and websites and everything in between including drawings and paintings. At heart, I’m an illustrator through and through: I always have a sketchbook or three and a bag of pencils in my purse. (My purse is heavy.) I have two books that I’ve self-published and I’m always working on new ideas. I’m obsessed with books and publications. And speaking of obsessions, I have three cats! Max, Molly, and Caesar and I absolutely adore them. I also love antiquing, collecting odds and ends, and kayaking with my family.

What was your first impression of SummerHouse?!

PRETTY EVERYTHING. I LOVE being in SummerHouse. Walking into work everyday is refreshing. Maybe because it’s so bright and clean and I’m surrounded by beautiful things and people. Plus, it smells good. We have the best candles.

What is your favorite way to spend a weekend?

If I’m not drawing or cleaning, I’m spending my time with loved ones. If we’re not somewhere eating, we’re at a local music show, a friend’s house, the movies, or doing something else that’s fun. I lay low during the week, so on weekends I like to get outside!

How do you take your caffeine?

Dr. Pepper. Or tea. I should stick to tea. I’m not really a coffee drinker but lately I’ve been exploring the ways of a good cappuccino.

What’s your favorite holiday and why?

Christmas. I love the spirit that comes along with it. All the lights, crisp air, the music, the giving, and food. It’s romantic. So, I don’t mind premature Christmas decorating…

What’s your favorite local restaurant in the Jackson area?

Hardest question ever. It depends on the food! Pizza? Basil’s. Italian? La Finestra. Burgers? Majestic.

What is the most exciting place you’ve ever visited?

I haven’t been to many places but I reallllly loved the Memphis zoo. So many wild cats!

Best movie you’ve seen recently? Why did you like it?

Mad Max. The aesthetic is strange and beautiful and I’m in serious need of some art books from that film.

What else do we need to know about you?!

I’m kind of a quieter person but I warm up quickly (if you’re friendly) though I have a knack for handling distressed people. I love tidiness and organization, I am always early and I’m never late. If I’m late, something happened to me, haha.

/ / / / / \ \ \ \ \

Thank you SO much, Melissa! We are SO glad to have you on the team! We love your punctuality and tidiness– You keep the rest of us sane! 🙂 Welcome to the team!
