As per usual, we are obsessing over the new LonnyMag for this month… Have you seen it? We love the bright, summery spaces that dominate most of it. Perfect for… drumroll please… SUMMER! Here are a few of the items that we carry that made it into the mag. Come shop LonnyMag with us! 🙂
Have you been by the store to meet Elish yet? She is Lisa’s amazing new assistant!! (Laurel is starting a new chapter and is no longer a full-timer at the store, but is still doing all of the social media, so she’s still around!)
Elish is a great addition to the SummerHouse team and is fitting right in! 🙂 Her organization skills, eye for fashion (both in interiors and in wearable fashion), and her cute personality make her a joy to work with! Let’s get to know her a little better, shall we?
SummerHouse: So your name is kinda different but super pretty!! Can you tell us a little bit about the origination of that?
Elish: My name….my mom’s family is Italian and Elizabeth is the trademark family name that gets worked in somehow on every girl’s name. My Dad is Irish, so they compromised and named me Elish which is gaelic for Elizabeth. Hence, the odd name.
SummerHouse: What has been the biggest shock about your new job at SummerHouse?! You’ve only been here a few weeks, but there has to be something that surprised you or caught you offguard!
Elish: I think my biggest shock at Summerhouse was how much of the business side of Interior Design I’d be doing…
SummerHouse: What is your favorite thing to cook and why?
Elish: My favorite thing to cook is either my chicken pesto salad because I made it up and it’s pretty different from traditional chicken salad. Or I love cooking crawfish fettuccine…I have a great recipe that isn’t too hard but tastes great!
SummerHouse: What is your favorite movie? Why?
Elish: Hmmm favorite movie is a tough one…I’d say Wild Hearts Can’t Be Broken because I grew up watching it and I’m a sucker for those kinds of movies. Or Last of the Mohicans…I always watch it with my dad and the music is incredible.
SummerHouse: How would you describe your own personal design style?
Elish: My personal design style is better described by the designers I respect…in fashion, as well as interior design. I love Alberta Ferretti, Kelly Wearstler, Zac Posen, Elizabeth & James, Robert Kuo… I’m usually drawn to clean lines broken up by rich textiles, any type of sleek surface like mirrors and metallic finishes, & cool colors or grayed neutrals.
SummerHouse: When you are not partaking in your new favorite hobby, which is to work at SummerHouse, what are your other hobbies?!
Elish: Well I love running and being outside so that’s a pretty big hobby, I love to cook and have people over for dinner, & I have 4 nephews and a brand new little niece that I love to visit! 🙂
SummerHouse: Tell us one weird thing about you that we may find interesting, or that not many people know
Elish: One weird thing? So hard to choose….haha Well I am an OCD bed maker. It’s weird. I make mine every morning no matter what. Even if I know I’m going to wash my sheets that night. And I sometimes can’t help myself and make other peoples beds…It makes the whole room look instantly put together!
SummerHouse: Anything else you want us to know?! 🙂
Elish: I love working at Summerhouse and I’m thankful I have so many amazing, sweet people to be around everyday!
We are FINALLY getting a blog post up about this! We are just now recovered from all the fun we had! If you were here, you know what we’re talking about! DJ Young Venom played some pretty awesome tunes to set the backdrop for the evening. VIP Catering, Soulshine, and Hey Cupcake showed us their stuff with the wonderful food they provided, and Vintage Wine Market was able to give some education in Wine 101. We learned all about the whites: sweet vs. dry, bubbly vs. non-bubbly, what is good with spicy food and what is good with sweet food…. We could go on and on with all of our newfound knowledge!
In addition to the fabulous DJ, the amazing wine, and the to-die-for food, we had quite the stylish photo booth! Here are a few of our favorite staff pictures from “inside the booth:”
We would like to thank all of the wonderful businesses that contributed to our swag bags! All of our VIP’s enjoyed sifting through their prizes to see what local swag they would be walking away with! We had items from Millie D’s Yogurt Shop, Fusion Coffeehouse, Body Anew Medical Spa, Kinkade’s Fine Clothing, CoatTails, Broadstreet Baking Company, Metropolitan Bank, Crawford Eye Care, Jackson Free Press (of course), SummerHouse (of course, of course…), and several others! We think our VIP’s were well pleased! Here’s the proof 🙂
Lastly, but certainly not least, we would like to thank Anne Taylor Duease for coming out and showcasing all of her beautiful Adonis jewelry. A few of us walked away with some brand new bling, and we’re so excited about it! Anne Taylor is so much fun to hang out with– we love when she gets to come around!!
SHOP LOCAL SOCIAL was such a great success, that we are talking about doing it more often! Maybe quarterly, maybe twice a year…. What do you think we should do?! We wanted to give one more “thank you” to Jackson Free Press for all the hard work they put into this event– it would not have happened without you guys!! We look forward to next time! 🙂
Happy Thursday! This day is finally here… We’ve been anticipating this event for so long! 🙂 Just a little recap of what’s going on this evening at SHOP LOCAL SOCIAL:
The party will be from 5:00 to 8:30 at SummerHouse. VIP Catering and Soulshine are providing the food. Vintage Wine Market is providing the wine. Swag bags for our 25 VIP’s filled with goodies from our favorite local shops, but if you’re not a VIP, no worries! We’ll be giving away a REALLY good door prize! We’ll have a photo booth with photographer Byron Wilkes snapping some fun pics while DJ Young Venom is mixing some groovy tunes. Speaking of photo booth… We actually caught Brittany modeling one of the moustaches that came with our photo booth props! She is totally rocking this look, don’t you think?!
Anne Taylor Duease will be here with her beautiful jewelry on display for you to play with and take home with you! Last but not least… you’ll be able to take TWENTY percent off of your purchases tonight! (with a very few exclusions…)
Here is something you can take home with you for 20% off tonight:
We can’t wait to see all of you tonight in your party gear celebrating local shopping! Cheers!
If you follow us on Twitter or Facebook, you’ve probably been able to sense our excitement about an upcoming event we are planning with Jackson Free Press! If you DON’T follow/like us, you need to! (Here are links to the SummerHouse Twitter and Facebook.)
SHOP LOCAL SOCIAL will take place at SummerHouse on the evening of Thursday, April 28. The whole idea behind SHOP LOCAL SOCIAL was to highlight some of our favorite local shops, artists, and eateries as well as to bring a little more awareness to SummerHouse! We love all of the local joints that really define the Jackson metro area, and we are SO excited to be partnering with JFP because they know how to throw a party! Plus they are just awesome in general.
So what can I expect at this party? So glad you asked! We will have some delicious food, great wine, a fun photo booth (complete with really cute photographer!), a DJ who really knows how to mix some tunes, live models wearing items from Blithe and Vine, a gorgeous jewelry artist showing off her handiwork, VIP swag bags, and much more….
How can I become a VIP and get a really cool swag bag? Again, SO glad you asked! All you have to do is “like” us on Facebook. Between now and the 28th, we will be posting status updates to the effect of, “Be one of the first 5 to comment on this post and secure your spot as a VIP!” Just by commenting, you will be added to our VIP list, which means you will be one of 25 lucky people to walk away with a SummerHouse bag full of awesome goodies.
We are still in the process of getting all of the details nailed down so we will keep you posted! GET EXCITED!
Don’t forget to save the date: Thursday, April 28th!
We brought over a lot of great new inventory today! Marty and the guys did a great job (as always!) in getting the floor looking better than ever! Here are a few of the highlights….
Check out our newest ad, coming out in the next issue of VIP! We are in love Brown Jordan products, and Brian did an AMAZING job on this ad!
Happy birthday to us,
Happy birthday to us,
Happy birthday to SummerHouse…..
Happy birthday to us!
March is our birthday month, and this year we are turning FIVE! It is hard to believe SummerHouse has been going strong for five whole years! It is actually older than that because Lisa had “Little SummerHouse,” as she likes to call it, in Fondren for years before moving to The Township in Ridgeland! What started out as a tiny, tiny shop with a shared resource library has grown into a beautiful showroom with a great big independent resource library! We love being out at the Township and have loved watching the steady development of the area around us.
Enough about SummerHouse… What do YOU get out of it being our birthday? Well, starting tomorrow (March 1), we will have markdowns on every piece of in-stock furniture and most accessories! In addition to amazing savings, we will have homemade gourmet cupcakes every Saturday! The cupcakes alone are worth a trip… Marty makes them using her secret recipe!
We hope to see you lots during the month of March! 🙂
As one of our designers was flipping through fabrics this morning, she ran across a CUTE fabric that many of us had somehow never seen! In researching to find what other colorways this particular fabric came in, we discovered a whole line of super fun, bright fabrics that just made our Monday! The designer is Amanda Nisbet and her line is called AND (Amanda Nisbet Designs) What do you think?!
Our FOR THE LOVE OF ART event was last night and we had so much fun! We had an amazing turnout! Lots of beautiful art, delicious food, live portrait sketches by artist Dyann Gunter, and great company all made for a good time. The cherry on top of the evening was the fact that it was benefitting CARA, the largest no kill animal shelter in Mississippi. They rely solely on donations, so we were excited to have the opportunity to do something to help them. Here are a few snapshots from the evening.
Thanks to all who came out last night. As you can see, we had a ball! And thanks to all of our amazing artists who were willing to participate and give to CARA! Dyann Gunter, Lauren Barksdale Hill, Anne Taylor Duease, Jean Seymour, and Kathryn Morris Trotter all deserve a huge round of applause!
If you would like more information about CARA, visit their website for the latest updates!
Stay tuned for information on our upcoming events… 🙂
We brought over LOTS of new stuff yesterday and today. Come check everything out! We have a long list of new Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams things (including a great charcoal gray Chester grouping!), some new Hickory Chair, a few great new pieces from LEE Industries, some OLY… There are so many new things, it is hard to remember them all! Here are a few shots of what you have to look forward to next time you come to the store:
Marty worked hard all day yesterday getting the floor set up with all of our new stuff! We got in our first shipment of Hickory Chair and we are SO excited about it! It is all beautiful! We also got some new Ferguson Copeland, Mitchell Gold, and LEE! Check it out….
We got an email this morning from Schumacher introducing the new Trina Turk outdoor fabrics and they are fabulous! We have had so much fun using the fabrics from her last introduction, so we are looking for ways to incorporate these into current projects! Even though these are labeled as outdoor fabrics, we love using them inside, particularly for kids areas. They clean with almost no effort at all! You can view all colorways of these patterns here.
As we were playing on the Jonathan Adler site, a few of their new items just really grabbed us! We have some of this at the store, and have the capability to order any of it! They get more and more creative every season, and that is exactly why we love them!
The past couple of days have been spent working on the showroom floor. We have many new pieces of furniture, new lamps, and new accessories that we’ve had fun working with! Here are a few shots of what we’ve been doing!
So last week at our SummerHouse Christmas party, Melanie made the BEST jambalaya any of us had ever tasted. We asked her for the recipe and she was so sweet to share it with us. It was even her idea to put it on the blog so all of you could have it too! Make this for your next party or gathering and be prepared for lots and lots of compliments!
Note from Melanie: Not only is this a great dip, but it is also excellent over rice or pasta. ENJOY! And have a very merry Christmas!
We have something exciting going on around here!! All you need to do is read this flyer (see below), log on to Facebook and LIKE the SummerHouse page (found here), take pictures of your Christmas decorations, upload those pictures to facebook, and post them on our wall! We are DYING to see what your houses look like! Indulge us, please! 🙂
Meet the newest member of the SummerHouse family: BrittanyIvy! Brittany is our new Jr. Designer/Design Assistant and is fitting right in! Not only is Brittany funny and extremely talented, but she is also very organized! On her first day, we overheard her saying “I can’t stand for anything to be messy.” Such sweet, sweet music to all of the designers’ ears… 🙂
We took a moment to ask Brit Brit a few questions. What a sweetheart she is!
How are you liking SummerHouse so far? What’s your favorite thing about working here?
I love working at SummerHouse! A few of my favorite things about working here are, 1) the people I work with! All the designers and employees are so friendly and inviting, and I think that makes all the difference in a workplace! 2) The thing I love about coming to work everyday is that I never know what task I will be faced with. Everyday is different and unique its own way.
What is your personal design style?
I would have to say that my personal design style would be more on the eclectic side – mixing the old with the new! I love shopping at antique and second-hand stores and finding unique original pieces and mixing it with new items and using what I already have!
What is your favorite place to find design inspiration? Magazines, blogs…?
I find inspiration from magazines such as Interior Design Magazine and ELLE Decor. Another inspiring place to find design are from the designers here at SummerHouse! Seeing all the projects that are going on around me are interesting and motivating! Each designer has their own personal style and its a great way to get to know each designer!
What is your favorite movie and why?
I would have to say of all the movies out there that Fried Green Tomatoes would have to be my favorite! Overall, the story is uplifting! I love that Evelyn gains independence by visiting Ninny and hearing the powerful story she has to tell. A few other movies I’ve enjoyed over the years are Forrest Gump, Little Miss Sunshine, and all of the Shrek movies!
What did you do over the weekend?!
Over the weekend you would have found me in Starkville, MS at the Mississippi State vs. Arkansas football game! Although the bulldogs couldn’t pull out a win for us in double overtime, I still had a great time visiting with friends!
What is something funny/unique about you?
I’m 25 years old and still sleep with my teddy bear and blankets.
Mark your calendars! Thursday, December 2, will be the best Christmas Open House this area has ever seen! All of the wonderful merchants at The Township and all of the wonderful merchants at The Renaissance have decided to team up for CHRISTMAS AT COLONY PARK. From 5:00 to 8:00 on December 2, all businesses in both areas will stay open after hours. All of the businesses at The Township will be offering specials that night, and many businesses will also have drawings for you to participate in!
The part about this open house that we are MOST excited about is the carriage rides! We will have horse-drawn buggies giving tours of The Township! It will cost $10 or a bag of dog/cat food in order to be able to ride on the carriage. All proceeds of this will be donated to CARA animal shelter.
We will keep you updated on things as the date draws nearer. We are so excited, and hope you and your friends will all make plans to be here! Visit http://www.christmasatcolonypark.com/ to learn more!!
Meagan Burks, one of our amazing designers, is faced with design challenges on a regular basis (as most designers are!) Where does she turn when she needs inspiration? Meagan has several designers, including Kelly Wearstler, Suzanne Kasler and Bobby McAlpine, whose styles really inspire her. All of them have books that help refresh Meagan’s sometimes depleated creativity.
“First and foremost, Bobby McAlpine is an architect; and his new book, “The Home Within Us” is my favorite new architectural design book. I have been an admirer of his architecture and interiors long before I knew he designed furniture. The upholstery collection he designed for Lee Industries, one of our manufacturers, perfectly showcases his use of gracefully sculptural lines that are as timeless as they are unique.”
In contrast to Bobby McAlpine, Meagan also finds inspiration from Kelly Wearstler. Kelly Wearstler’s HUE is a reminder of how to properly incorporate daring color into interior design. As The New Yorker so eloquently put it, Kelly is “the presiding grande dame of West Coast interior design.”
“You can always tell it’s a Kelly Wearstler room. Her mix of pattern, color, and texture is so bold, but it always works. What shows through in her interiors shows through in her textile designs.”
Somewhere between the earthy, natural Bobby McAlpine and the bright, bold Kelly Wearstler falls Suzanne Kasler. Her versatility is endless.
“Suzanne Kasler is known for her classically inspired rooms, soothing palettes, and casual elegance. Her lighting fixtures bring Southern charm, European sensibility, and a respect for architectural details to her interiors. Her work is polished and refined, yet casual, relaxed and effortless”
Suzanne describes her own style as “a fresh mix of continental flavor and classic style, emphasizing light, scale, and architectural elements of space, creating collected interiors.” Her book, Inspired Interiors, beautifully showcases the mix that Suzanne is known for.
