Acrylic fabrics have come SUCH a long way over the past several years that sometimes we even have trouble telling the difference between a regular fabric and an indoor/outdoor fabric! Take a look at a few fabrics that have caught our eyes lately and have us longing for an outdoor evening with some close friends and a bottle of wine!

The Importance of Design Part I: Rebecca Atwood

Why is design important? In this series, we will talk with influential designers in the industry to get this question answered.

We are honored to begin with Rebecca Atwood, a Brooklyn based designer and artist. Rebecca creates home textiles using a combination of traditional textile techniques and hand painting. Every part of her product is carefully thought out, right down to the gold YKK zippers that are used on every pillow to guarantee the highest quality. The process is so important to her she has an entire section on her website dedicated to it (check it out here)!

Rebecca was kind enough to take a minute to have a quick Q&A session with us! Here is what she had to say on the importance of design.

1. I see in your about section, “Behind each design is a story drawn from her collection of family heirlooms, textures found in nature, vintage patterns discovered at the flea market, inspired color combinations from world travels or a composition from her sketchbook. “  Can you tell us the story behind a specific pattern that you particularly love?!

Our marble pattern has a lot of personal history.  I actually learned the Suminagashi marbling technique during a parent’s weekend at Rhode Island School of Design with my Mom. We spent an afternoon marbling and I saved all of the papers. This technique of floating ink in a bath of water is very meditative and the resulting patterns remind me of the coastal landscape I grew up with on Cape Cod.  These papers were then scanned into the computer and I put them into repeat.

2. Can you describe your pattern design process in a nutshell?

My design process is a bit different for each pattern, but all of my designs start with a hands-on process. It might be directly painting on the fabric, folding and dyeing it – or working in my sketchbook with gouache, watercolor, ink, or cut paper.  I focus first on creating an interesting concept and then how to translate it into fabric. It may be digitally printed, screen printed, woven, hand painted or dyed.  Then I work on creating a mood board for a collection – I’m pulling together a color palette, pinning up inspiration images of rooms and environments, and mixing in my artwork. I love this stage of developing the bigger picture.

3. When did you first realize you wanted to make a business out of designing fabrics, art, and goods made from your designs?

When I was graduating from college I knew I needed a job, and textile design seemed like the closest thing I could do to painting and be paid. That was the start of my interest in the home décor world.  I worked for a few years at Anthropologie and then a small NY-UK based design consultancy company creating private label programs for retailers here and abroad while also consulting on trends.  I wasn’t actually sure I ever wanted to have my own line, but as things went along in my career it seemed like the next move.  I just wanted to dig deeper and develop product that I really loved and wanted to put out into the world. There is so much product out there, but a lot of it isn’t thoughtful, and I wanted to break through that mold.  I also wanted to control how and where the product I designed was being made.

4. What is something that really sets your business apart from others that might be considered similar?

I think the focus on the creative process is something that sets my business apart. I set aside time just to explore ideas without focusing on what they will become — I think that’s the only way to really allow for your best work to come forward.  We still do all of the hand-dyeing in the studio in Brooklyn. Hands on is so important.

5. What is your favorite item(s) in your current collection? Can you tell us a little bit about why you love it/them so?

I don’t think I can pick a favorite! I really love all of the pieces in the line, and it’s important to me that they are all pieces I would live with in my own home.  I’m constantly creating and so I’m always partial to what I’m working on next. Right now, for example, I’m working on our first collection of woven throws. I’m loving this departure into a new technique that’s so different than print.  Our shibori pillows from our current collection will always also be a favorite. I love how each one is unique due to the hand dyeing process.

6. What is your favorite way to spend a weekend?

I love a lazy weekend at home with my husband and our two kittens! Going to a yoga class at Bend and Boom, making a delicious meal or eating at one of our favorite neighborhood spots, and just catching up on time together.

Thank you so much Rebecca!
Here is some eye candy brought to you by Rebecca Atwood herself!

Lovely Living

When designer Elish Phares Moon fist met with new client Dot, who she refers to as one of her sweetest clients, their personalities automatically clicked! As Elish began to talk through designing Dot’s new town home, which was a downsize from where she previously lived, Elish found that the most important thing to Dot was keeping a feeling of spaciousness despite the decreased square footage.

Timeless with a little spunk! Interior Design by Elish Phares Moon of SummerHouse // www.alwayssummerblog.com

Timeless with a little spunk! Interior Design by Elish Phares Moon of SummerHouse // www.alwayssummerblog.com

Of designing the space, Elish says, “the biggest challenge in this space was creating adequate seating and keeping symmetry without sacrificing an open floor plan.”

Dot was very open to Elish’s design direction but wanted to still be able to showcase her own personality, which Elish was completely open to! Dot’s living area turned out to be a perfect reflection of her: timeless with a bit of spunk!

Elish’s favorite aspect of the space was the beautiful skirted sofa and leather ottoman. “It feels like a space that could have passed for a traditional sitting room yet is still cozy and inviting. Plus Dot is the consummate hostess and always keeps fresh flowers in a little vase on the ottoman that doubles as her coffee table.”

This design is truly a wonderful example of a designer/client working relationship.

“Dot was very trusting of my expertise but made sure that we had specific places where her personality showed through. She hand selected the accent pillows on the sofa from a trip to Philadelphia; They marry perfectly with the subtle hues I already selected for the living area,” says Elish!

We love how it all turned out! Thank you, Elish and Dot, for contributing! 🙂

Inside The Orange Box: Placing Pillows On A Sofa

02
JANUARY
2015

This week’s Inside The Orange Box deals with the issue of pillow placement on a sofa! There are multiple things to consider when picking out what your pillow arrangement needs to look like, so our designers give a few great pointers!

Inside The Orange Box - Design tips from SummerHouse's Interior Designers // www.alwayssummerblog.com

Interior Designer Todd Prince

On a sectional, there always need to be three pillows in the corner – one larger and two smaller. On each end of the sofa, you need a minimum of two 22” pillows on one end and a minimum of one 22” on the other end. There should be a variety of styles, as well. For a sofa, you have tons of options! You can always do a 24” and a 22” on each end, but what I really love are two pillows on one end (one larger and one slightly smaller) and a throw with one pillow on the other so it’s not so matchy matchy.

Interior Designer Sunny Holliday

It really depends on the size and cushion style of your sofa. Sometimes I like to do three lumbars across if there are three back cushions and three seat cushions. If the sofa is 85 or so inches long, and has two back cushions over two seat cushions, I will do two 22” pillows with a lumbar in between them. If the sofa comes standard with throw pillows, it’s fun to change the fabric for the throw pillows with a different fabric from the company.

Inside The Orange Box: Placing Pillows On A Sofa // www.alwayssummerblog.com

Interior Designer Katy Hines

Keep the height of your accent pillows and back cushions on the sofa within one or two inches of each other. If the back cushions are 20″ high, a 22″ pillow is a great choice.

Interior Designer Jacque Moor

Decorative pillows need to reflect the style of not only the sofa, but the room! On a long, deep sofa, I would have four pillows total. 24″ pillows at each end with 22″ pillows in front of each. This will allow the sofa to not seem overbearing in a room, and a comfortable place to lounge!

The SummerHouse Bay at Mistletoe Marketplace

06
NOVEMBER
2014

‘Tis the season for Mistletoe Marketplace, Jackson’s official kickoff to the holiday season! As we have done the past several years, SummerHouse designed one of the entrances to the shopping part of the event, and it turned out beautifully!! Lisa and Marty, the brains behind the operation, went in the direction of a woman’s study with a beautiful, soft color palette. It’s always quite a rush getting our bay ready to go, but always a lot of fun. When you’re ordering pieces from market (which was just a couple of weeks ago!), having custom pieces made, and obsessing over the tiny details, like pencil color (seriously!), like designers do, it’s quite a feat getting everything finished in time! But there’s nothing like a hard deadline to get things happening! 😉

Here are some snapshots of our space… We hope you’ll stop by and take a look if you get to go to Mistletoe this year!

Inside The Orange Box: Detailing A Custom Pillow

03
OCTOBER
2014

Our Inside The Orange Box topic for today is all about detailing your pillows! Pillows make such an impact, even if they aren’t the biggest, most expensive items in the room. They are of utmost importance!

Pillows are a place where designers can get a little creative with fabric and all of the fabulous trims that are available to them today!

There are so many ways to take a pillow up a few notches with simple tweaks or additions, so our designers share some of their favorite ways to do so!

>>> DESIGNER ELISH PHARES <<<

“There are so many ways to make one pillow go a long way. One of my favorite details is to add a sheer flange. Another under-used detail is the boxed pillow. You can also reverse the fabric application or add banding… just a subtle something extra can go a long way!”

“If the design is right, railroading a fabric (or running it the opposite way from how it comes off the bolt) on a lumbar pillow or long accent pillow is a nice change up. I like to do a contrasting fabric for the backs of pillows as well! And usually I order my pillow forms one inch bigger than the actual size of the pillow to make sure they’re nice and full!”

“I commissioned the late artist Lynn Green Root to do an art piece for me, and I had her custom art piece embroidered onto silk for these pillows. The client kept the original pen and ink drawing that she did and he framed it for his walls. It became a really, really special project for many reasons.”
