One Dreamy Nursery

10
JUNE
2014

Designer Todd Prince recently completed a nursery for a very special little girl that we are so excited to share with you! Nursery design is always so much fun, and we love the direction Todd took with this particular one. We’ll let him tell more about it!

Dreamy Little Girl's Nursery by SummerHouse Designer Todd Prince

“The first thing the client said is, “I want it dreamy. I want to walk in and it feel soft and dreamy.”

They wanted it comfortable and light with just a little bit of blush and white. They wanted interesting and open storage, which is why we did the open shelving so it can grow with her, and we did a 3-drawer chest as a changing table that can one day be used more like a dresser as she gets older.”

“We did a swivel glider chair and ottoman in the room that is comfortable for the mother now, but can also grow with the room as the child gets older. We tried to do things that would work great with the nursery but would also grow along with the child. The only thing that really won’t grow with her is the bed.”

“My client never said she wanted floral, but when she said “dreamy” to me, I just kept picturing something that was pale and large scale. That blush colored Mary McDonald large-scale fabric we used for drapery was the impetus for everything that happened in the room.

She did say more than once that she didn’t want the room to feel like a big linen bedroom. She wanted texture but she wanted it light. So we did a washable velvet on the swivel rocker, a hide on the ottoman, which is easily cleanable, a heavyweight linen on the drapery, and the carpet is a very thickly woven continuous loop carpet so it has the look of a lambs wool sweater. I had a local artisan tweak the finish on the Restoration Hardware baby bed, and did a mixture of silver and gold on all of the metal in the room. We mixed lots of texture to create interest.”

Dreamy Little Girl's Nursery by SummerHouse Designer Todd Prince

“I tried to make it as flexible as possible all while keeping it completely dreamy like a baby. The word dreamy kept coming up a million times. That was the only word she could find to describe the way she wanted the room to feel!”

Dreamy Little Girl's Nursery by SummerHouse Designer Todd Prince

“We did an antique venation glass mirror to make the space feel like it had a little age to it, but the art is all modern. We hung the really glossy Bonnie Fuchs paintings with two Sarah Haas Otts paintings salon style so nothing would be too matchy matchy.  To play off the artwork, and to counteract the hide and linen, I needed a little bit of shimmer at the bottom of the bed so we did a Classic Cloth silk bedskirt and used a Samuel & Sons trim for just a little bit of shimmer.”

“And, most importantly, we left as much room as we could in the middle of the room for her to play!”

We love how it turned out, and Todd’s client loved it too, which is the most important opinion of all! We hope you love this as much as we do!

Speaking of our dear Chelsea… Since her husband was transferred to South Carolina in December, we find ourselves in need of another interior designer/sales associate! So we’re hiring!

If you are interested in this position or know someone who is, please take a look at this blog post with more information about the job. We’d love to hear from those of you who are qualified! 🙂

Designer Showhouse Feature in Mississippi Magazine

04
JANUARY
2013

{ mississippi magazine }

The latest issue of Mississippi Magazine has a wonderful 10-page spread on the Designer Showhouse out at Chestnut Hill that our very own Lisa Palmer led the design on! Be sure to pick up a copy and read the story that starts on page 182!

Mississippi Magazine

Here’s a quick excerpt from the wonderful writeup!

“Lisa Palmer of SummerHouse in Ridgeland was chosen as lead designer. Palmer chose fundamentals– wall colors, flooring, and tile. She shares, “I received the plans about six months prior to building. I changed the plans up quite a bit by arching doorways, adding cypress beams, rounding corners instead of using casings in openings, adding flatboard to walls and ceilings to give it more of a cottage feel. I worked with Al Bruce on the front door and added shutters instead of sidelights. I used a lot of semi-transparent stains in different mixes to achieve a unique look.”

We hope you enjoy this story, and the rest of the issue, as much as we did!

One Really Big Mirror

Designer Todd Prince just finished up part of a project that we are all going crazy over! This HUGE, custom designed mirror is just what this big, beautiful dining room needed!

Designer Todd Prince for SummerHouse // Ridgeland, MS

About the space:
Todd says the solid masonry wall in this dining room needed something reflective to open up the space. His first thought was to do a really, REALLY big mirror.

About the mirror:
This bad boy is ELEVEN feet high by NINE feet wide! That’s 99 square feet of mirror! Brown’s Fine Art and Framing in Jackson, who made this custom masterpiece, had to rent a space to construct it because it was bigger than what they had the space to make in their shop!

The frame was custom made and custom finished by hand. The frame finish was originally a solid silver, but Allison at Brown’s made it look a little more aged.

Not only did Allison hand finish the frame, but also the rosettes used at the corner of every 20″ x 20″ piece of mirror used to create the full reflective surface.

“BIG shout out Allison Simmons at Brown. She did a fantastic job,” Todd says.

Here are a couple more photos of this beautiful home, holiday ready, for your viewing pleasure!

A Beachy Before + After

How about a great BEFORE + AFTER to get you through the rest of the day?

SummerHouse Designer Elizabeth Gullett was approached by a client who was in need of a bedroom update.
This client was in love with a particular bedroom pictured in Coastal Living and asked for Elizabeth’s help in giving her bedroom a similar feel.

BEFORE
BEFORE

Elizabeth says, “The feeling in that picture was great. It was the exact feeling we wanted to achieve– fresh and beachy and clean. But the client’s house is very refined with lots of antiques. If we did the same look in the picture, it wouldn’t have flowed with the rest of her house. We took the feeling in the picture and made it applicable to her home.”

A Brand New BEFORE & AFTER

OCTOBER
2012

{{ let’s update, shall we? }}

We’ve got a very inspiring BEFORE & AFTER to show today! It is amazing what a great design mind (which would be Lisa’s mind, to be precise!) and a few new things can do for a space!

All of these rooms are in the same house, and all of them turned out just beautifully! This particular client wanted to update her home, keeping some of her favorite pieces while adding some new ones. Take a look at these before and afters!

What a dramatic change! The updates Lisa did to this space opened up the room while simultaneously making it feel much warmer. Cleaner lines, simplification of pattern, and just an overall cleaned up new scheme make all the difference in this beautiful living area!

The client’s daughter actually painted the beautiful piece of art over the love seat, which was the starting point for the sunroom. The wall, the floor, and the furniture were all changed to bring this space into modern times! We love the deep turquoise chair and pillows that ground the space. Just gorgeous!

Outdoor fabrics we love…

Its SUMMER!  Which means it is time to sit by the pool by day and grill outside with friends by night!  Why not brighten up your back porch or pool deck with some functional and beautiful outdoor fabrics?  We love using outdoor fabrics not only for outdoor projects, but for indoor projects as well!  Since outdoor fabrics are so durable and easy to clean (on top of looking great!), why NOT use them inside?  They are especially great for families with small children.  Take a look at these great patterns:

Trina Turk for Schumacher. Bamboo Forest Parrot
Perennials. Jake Stripe Tutti Fruitti
Perennials. Ripples Fire Island
Trina Turk for Schumacher. Peacock Print Pool
Perennials. Bird Tracks Fire Island
Perennials. Bubbles Key West
Trina Turk for Schumacher. Pisces Punch
Perennials. Coral Island Scuba Do

Top 5 reasons why outdoor fabrics are so dear to our hearts:

  1. They are just as great indoor as they are outdoor!  (Perfect for barstools, banquettes, pillows and upholstery for kids areas, the list goes on…)
  2. They are fade resistant.  They will keep their color for YEARS.
  3. Most can be spot cleaned with mild soap and water.  If you have a cushion or pillow with a removable casing, the casing can be machine washed!
  4. If hotels and restaurants use them, then we KNOW they must be super durable.
  5. They can add a fun punch of color to an unexpected place. (A hammock, for example!)
