GIVE & GET Coat Drive for Stewpot Community Services

02
DECEMBER
2013

As you might remember reading in our post from last week about the upcoming Christmas Open House at The Township (which we hope you can come to- it’s Thursday!), we are doing another coat drive this year!

The drive will run from December 5th (the day of the Open House) until December 19th, and just to make things a little more exciting, we’re giving away two Lee Industries chairs in the process!

Do we have your attention yet?! Keep reading…

SummerHouse Coat Drive

We’ve cleverly entitled this year’s event the GIVE & GET COAT DRIVE because when you give, you get the chance to win! For each coat you bring us to give to Stewpot, you get one entry into the drawing for these beautiful chairs! (Did we mention they’re from one of our most esteemed vendors, that they’re leather, and that they’re swivel gliders?! SERIOUSLY!)

Donate a coat, enter to win one of TWO of these chairs!

Every coat earns one entry, so if you bring ten coats, you get to put your name in the drawing ten times! Sounds pretty great, right?! (We do ask that the mens, womens, or childrens coats you bring are in new or gently used condition.)

We hope to see you December 5th for the Open House (or anytime during the two weeks after that) with an arm full of coats to drop off! Once the drive is over on 12/19, we’ll draw the two winners on 12/20, so be sure you don’t miss the chance to be a part of our biggest giveaway to date!

For more information about our coat drive, please don’t hesitate to give us a call! (601-853-4445) And for more information about the Christmas Open House, CLICK HERE!

Mistletoe Marketplace Designer Bay

NOVEMBER
2013

Mistletoe Marketplace officially started today!

Last night was the Preview Gala, the event’s kick off party, which took place at the Mississippi Trademart in downtown Jackson. Several of our staff members attended (looking wonderful, everyone!) and they all said it was the fun-filled winter wonderland they’d hoped it would be! 😉

SummerHouse

This year we had the opportunity to do a Designer Bay, which always turns out to be a fun (yet challenging) project! This year, we went with a black and white color story, popping in some pretty fuschia! Our lovely photographer Anna got some great shots of the space! We love how it turned out!

TSG Shoot: Behind the Scenes

28
OCTOBER
2013

We had a blast last Friday during our photo shoot for The Scout Guide Jackson, which is a highly anticipated new publication that will be available in Spring 2014!

BEHIND THE SCENES WITH TSG

The mission of The Scout Guide, as explained on TSG’s home site, “has always been about supporting locally owned businesses and celebrating the unique, talented treasures found in our communities. With the increasing proliferation of chain-store commerce and unbelievable surge in online sale outlets, we feel the need to love and protect homegrown businesses has never been more important.”

We’re excited to be a part of Jackson’s first edition of The Scout Guide, which will be an annual publication! Lisa, Todd, and Marty were fabulous SummerHouse models, photographer Tom Beck was so much fun, and TSG editor Kristin Allen did a great job of coordinating!

Behind the scenes with The Scout Guide & SummerHouse!

We can’t wait to see the finished product in the Spring, but for now, we’re getting our TSG fix via their fantastic blog! Check it out here. You can also like The Scout Guide Jackson on Facebook!

Enjoy!

Lauren Lachance In The Press

07
OCTOBER
2013

It’s officially Lauren Lachance week at SummerHouse! Our big trunk show event with her is all day on Thursday (10/10), so we’re devoting one post a day to her work from now until Thursday!

Today we’re talking about pieces from The Lauren Lachance Collection that have been featured in the press! Although there are many instances of her work appearing in nationally published projects, we just picked a couple of our favorites. We love how these pressed botanicals work in both modern and traditional settings!

The partictular grouping below are four 26″ x 34″ pressed leaves in their signature French Gray frame. Ann Holden, a New Orleans interior designer got these from Lachance through Geri Bremmerman, who owns a shop on Magazine Street in New Orleans!

The pressings in this photo are all 20″ x 28″ cream hydrangeas for Phoebe Howard’s grand opening of her Charlotte, NC showroom. This photo is also featured in her book, The Joy of Decorating!

The pressed pieces also mix beautifully with other art. The versatility is amazing! We think you’ll be impressed to see the botanicals hanging in our showroom amongst our other art. It’s going to be beautiful!

Looking forward to seeing you (and your friends!) on Thursday!

SEPTEMBER
2013

As you may or may not know, we’re hosting a Lauren Lachance Trunk Show here at SummerHouse on Thursday, October 10! We are really excited about this event because, not only is Lauren super nice, but her work is OUTSTANDING… And you’re all invited!

She was kind enough to send a few images of items she plans to bring to the show in a couple of weeks. She’s actually bringing about 200 pieces of all different sizes! We aren’t sure how we’re going to handle our excitement over these pieces once they actually arrive, but we’ll cross that bridge when we get there!

For now, we’re lusting over these botanical beauties…

Chatting With Natalie Ray

03
JULY
2013

NATALIE RAY AT SUMMERHOUSEArtist Natalie Ray, whose artwork adorns the walls of the SummerHouse showroom, took a minute to answer a few questions for us, despite the crazy busy summer schedule she’s juggling right now!

We loved getting a closer look into the life and inspirations of one of our favorite artists!

1) For those who don’t know you as well, give us a quick little “Natalie in a nutshell!”

I was born in Jackson and have lived here ever since. My parents, Jim and Linda Burwell, are both pretty eccentric/artsy people. As restaurateurs in the Belhaven area, they had many “artist” friends. They began taking my sisters and me to events like the Chimneyville Crafts Festival (by the MS Craftman’s Guild) at a very young age to see the works of their artist friends. Even as a young child, I was amazed by it all (glass, wood, metal, etc.).

I went to Millsaps College where I majored in Business Administration and minored in Art. I always thought I would paint “when I got old,” so I went into the technology sector after college and ended up over Operations of a local software development company. As many tech companies of that time,
the company was very short-lived. While I was looking for another job, I painted a few paintings. A friend asked if she could commission me to paint a painting for her husband for their anniversary. After that another friend asked, then another. I decided to give it a shot and officially opened my
business, Natalie Ray Designs, in 2001. In addition to painting, I teach private art lessons and camps to children.

My husband, Rand (also from Jackson), and I have been married for 18 years and have three awesome children: Bracken, Greyton and Ainsley. They are my everything 🙂 If I am not painting/teaching art, I am at a Basketball game, Soccer Game, Riding Lesson or some type of kid event.

By artist Natalie Ray // SummerHouse

2) How long have you been painting?

Although I began drawing at a very young age, I did not pick up a paintbrush until I took my first painting course at Millsaps. I was hooked at day one and have painted ever since.

3) What is your favorite medium?

My favorite medium is acrylic (especially on masonite… I love the way it soaks up the paint so quickly). I’ve tried using oils, but I am too impatient to wait for the drying time. Anyone that knows me well, knows that I am pretty ADD so I need to see results pretty quickly or I get bored (ha!) I also use charcoals, and watercolor quite a bit in my work.

By artist Natalie Ray // SummerHouse

4) Can you recall the first or most momentous experience that inspired you to really express yourself on canvas?

When I was in college, my art professor asked us to create a painting from something that inspired us. As I was walking back to my dorm, I saw an empty classroom with all the desks in rows. There were these big windows against one wall and several of the desks were off-center (from students leaving and knocking into them). I just had to paint it. I put my own “twist” on it by painting each of the desks a different (bright) color. There was something about showing the extraordinary in the ordinary that struck me. I still come back to that theory when I paint today. There is really so much extraordinary in the ordinary that people often miss.

5) What is the strangest request for a commission piece you’ve ever gotten?

Ok.. I really can’t think of a strange request… is that weird?? One of the greatest requests I have gotten, however, was from a friend whose 6th/7th grade son wanted a painting of the guitars/highway signs at the Crossroads in Clarksdale. As a fan of Robert Johnson (and the Blues in general), I thought it was about the coolest thing ever and was so much fun to paint!!

By artist Natalie Ray // SummerHouse

6) What is your favorite aspect of being an artist?

I thrive on change. Really. I hear people say that change makes them nervous. I am the exact opposite. I get nervous when things stay the same for too long. I love that I literally learn something new every day as an artist. You have to make yourself vulnerable as an artist and try new things. You have to put yourself out there. It’s kind of scary sometimes, but it is so rewarding when someone tells you how much one of your pieces means to them.

7) What else can you share with us?!

A bit of information that is probably not important to anyone other than myself… In addition to being an artist, I am a HUGE music lover. The Beatles will always be my absolute favorite (reminds me of my childhood.. Mom and Dad had The White Album when I was young.. how cool is that??!!), but I love a little bit of everything- blues, jazz, alternative, funk… really into Americana/Folk these days. I do my best work (in my opinion) when I have my music playing.

Thank you so much Natalie!! Be sure to stop by the showroom next time you’re in the area to see her work with your own eyes — We feel sure you’ll leave inspired (and possibly in possession of a new piece of art!)
