Why We Love Michael Clement

Our #LeeLovesLocal event is this Thursday and we are so excited to have artist Michael Clement join us! Michael is bringing his exquisite handmade lamps and bowls for the event. As if that’s not exciting enough – Michael is making custom mini bowls exclusively for SummerHouse! We cannot wait for the mini bowls to join the rest of Michael’s pieces in our showroom. Check them out below.

Michael J. Clement Lamps

22
JULY
2015

We are carrying a new line here at SummerHouse that we are SO excited about called M. Clement Designs! Michael Clement, owner and founder, has a beautiful line of one-of-a-kind lamps and bowls that are all hand thrown and hand painted. Each is even signed, so his designs are true works of art! And customization is available!

Michael was kind enough to do a mini interview for us so we could get to know more about him and his company!

1) Tell us about yourself and your tie to New Orleans!

I was born and raised in New Orleans, and have lived here nearly my whole life, except for the six years I spent at LSU studying Landscape Architecture. I have said that I am genetically incapable of living anywhere else. New Orleans has a great sense of community. I love how this community has left its mark on the landscape of New Orleans. Whether it is through its architecture, food, or music, this city has a soul, layers of life like I have not seen anywhere else.

2) Your lamps and accessories are incredible! How long has ceramics been something you’ve been into and how did you get into it?

In the late 1990’s I worked at a lamp company, Burts Cason, in Baton Rouge on the weekends (because Landscape Architecture is not known for its high pay). I was painting their shades and doing basic gilding and painting. It was there that Kay Cason taught me the technique of gilding. Working there sparked the fire.

In 2001, I bought a bag of clay and made a small urn for a personal project that looked like a temple and gilded it in silver. This led to me making a replica of a house for a friend, a storage box for another and a lamp as a wedding gift.

I thought back to my working at Burts Cason and recalled how much I loved going to the studio. By this time the landscape field was on the decline during the economic downturn and I decided to change fields. I put together 6 slab built lamp base shapes and showed at High Point Market.

From those 6 slab built shapes we expanded to 20 plus shapes. I found a potter in Lafayette, Bruce O’dell, who throws some of our designs on a wheel completing the line.

M. Clement Designs at SummerHouse in Ridgeland, MS // www.alwayssummerblog.com

3) Do you have a favorite item in your current line? Tell us about it.

Like children I love all of my work equally. My favorites are always changing. Sometimes a client will come up with a unique color and pattern combination on a traditional piece that will make me see it differently.

We really enjoy the “brushstroke” technique we are doing now. It is a technique that needs to be done somewhat quickly making the pattern more expressive. We are also exploring shapes from the mid-century and are curious to see where it will lead.

M. Clement Designs at SummerHouse in Ridgeland, MS // www.alwayssummerblog.com

4) Do you have any fun summer plans?!

Because I love working in the studio and the business is relatively young, it does not leave much time for travel. My partner and I may take a stay-cation in the French Quarter and play tourist for the weekend. It is great to see your city from a different perspective.

Thank you Michael!

Be sure to come see his stunning pieces in person next time you’re in the area! We currently have several styles on our showroom floor! And as always, thanks for stopping by today!

Inside The Orange Box: How To Determine What Size Chandelier You Need

24
APRIL
2015

This week’s Inside The Orange Box is short and sweet. And extremely useful! This is a trick we use all the time to help determine what size chandelier we need for a given space.

How to determine the correct size chandelier to get for a given space // Design tips from SummerHouse Interior Designers // www.alwayssummerblog.com

It is as simple as this:

Take the length of your room (say 12 feet), the width of your room (say 18 feet), and add those two numbers together. You get 30. That’s the number of inches in diameter your fixture should be (give or take a couple of inches!) So a fixture anywhere from 28″ to 32″ in diameter should be just right for that space!

We hope you have a fantastic weekend! If you’re in the area, be sure to stop in and see us!

Inside The Orange Box: The Right Light

05
DECEMBER
2014

Inside The Orange Box this week, we talk about getting the right light! Three designers share their secrets of perfecting the ambient lighting in whatever room they are designing… So let’s see what they have to say!

Interior Designer Elish Phares
I don’t have a hard and fast rule when choosing lighting for a space. Unless you are starting from scratch, each room comes with it’s own deciding factors: ceiling height, paint colors, natural light, size, etc. I love a pair of matching lamps in a room, but I usually avoid more than one pair. If I need another matching pair I usually start varying height. For example, a pair of table lamps and a pair of floor lamps look great together but aren’t too repetitive. A beautiful ceiling fixture can go a long way, but I like it to be a focal point and not fight with the rest of the room. If there is already a lot going on, I may think twice about adding a large hanging fixture. Lastly, remember who you are designing for! How do they use the space? What are they drawn to? The room should always be a reflection of those living in it.
SummerHouse Designers share tips on getting the right light // www.alwayssummerblog.com
SummerHouse Designers share tips on getting the right light // www.alwayssummerblog.com
Interior Designer Lindsey Townsend
When designing lighting for a space, I always take into consideration how the space is going to be used, the amount of natural light, the paint color, the ceiling height, and the size of the room. When starting from scratch, I like to have evenly dispersed can lighting along with a ceiling fixture in the center of the room.  In most cases I will select a decorative ceiling fixture, but not in all cases, because again, it depends on the function, size, furniture, and overall design style of the room.
If the space already has many interesting design aspects then I will select a very simple light fixture, but in other spaces I do the opposite! I will select a light fixture to be the focal point and the rest of the space is designed to compliment it, not compete!  I always put separate dimmers on the light fixture and the can lighting when possible.  Dimmers are always nice to have when entertaining!
SummerHouse Designers share tips on getting the right light // www.alwayssummerblog.com
Interior Designer Molly Ferguson
You should have a mix of light sources at all different levels to create a flattering ambiance. You also need appropriate task lighting for whatever you do in that space. I try to stay away from fluorescent lights if at all possible. In some instances, fluorescent lights will accent blue tones and make reds look colder, and they often are very harsh. Incandescent lighting gives off a warmer, more flattering glow. The most ideal light source is natural light. I believe if the sun is up, your drapery should be open!
Every house is so different, so there are many factors to take into consideration when selecting lighting for a space. It’s always good to hire a professional for guidance in tricky areas such as lighting!

14
MARCH
2014

Have you visited our new web store yet? It’s up and running (and looking gorgeous!)

Next time you head to the online shop, be sure to keep an eye out for our staff’s favorite items! We got our designers and support staff to share a little about why they love certain pieces and even got some insight on how a few of them would style the items in their own homes! Let’s see what everybody picked!

DESIGNER LINDSEY TOWNSEND

Favorite Item: Modern Square End Table

SummerHouse Design Staff's favorites from the www.summerhousestyle.com web store

“I love an acrylic piece mixed into any space with antique or french style pieces.  I love the juxtaposition of both old and new.”

DISPLAY AND BUSINESS OFFICE MANAGER MARTY SMITH

Favorite Item: Gareth Sculpture

SummerHouse Design Staff's favorites from the www.summerhousestyle.com web store

“My favorite item is the Gareth Sculpture because I am a fan of anything with horns and anything with gold or brass! It is so right now!”

DESIGNER ELIZABETH GULLETT

Favorite Item: Henry Fireplace Tool Set
SummerHouse Design Staff's favorites from the www.summerhousestyle.com web store

“Some pieces are just a necessity in every home, and I’m always looking for those that can be beautiful AND functional. When the item is constantly on display, it’s even more important. What was once an eyesore can become another layer in your room. The edgy, beautiful modernity of these iron fire tools creates a piece of art…. Definitely a real winner!!”

DESIGNER CASEY JENKINS

Favorite Item: Tremont Chair

SummerHouse Design Staff's favorites from the www.summerhousestyle.com web store

“My absolute favorite thing on the web store would have to be the lovely Tremont Chair!
The gilded iron chair frame paired with a white linen tightly upholstered seat and back cushion is the perfect chair for almost any living, keeping, or bedroom setting! This chair upholstered in a white hide would be fabulous! I will admit, it’s not the most comfortable, but beauty is pain, and this chair is worth it!”

SOCIAL MEDIA DIRECTOR LAUREL DONAHOO

Favorite Item: Fawn Observation Print

SummerHouse Design Staff's favorites from the www.summerhousestyle.com web store

“My husband is a big deer hunter, and we both love art, so this print would be perfect in our home! Those colors and the style speak to me, and he would love the subject matter! I’m envisioning this hanging on one of the big walls in our breakfast room! It would be stunning!”

DESIGNER ELISH PHARES

Favorite Item: Gazelle Horn Plaque

SummerHouse Design Staff's favorites from the www.summerhousestyle.com web store

“I adore these Gazelle Horns! I actually already own them and have them hanging over my bed. They were my first ever Summerhouse purchase! I tend to go a little luxe, but love influences from nature. I have these hanging over my upholstered blue headboard with antique nailhead. The horns are flanked by b+w photos of my grandfather when he was in the navy. Captures my style perfectly.”

DESIGNER SUNNY HOLLIDAY

Favorite Item: Tampa Pewter Swivel Chair

SummerHouse Design Staff's favorites from the www.summerhousestyle.com web store

“There are several great components to why I love this chair! The leather is simply splendid, the comfort is beyond perfection & the style is captivating. Are you ready for the icing on the cake???…. It’s a swivel chair! Oh how I heart a swivel chair!! The great thing about it being a swivel chair is that it’s perfect for conversational areas. The perfect “home” for this chair would be in a keeping area, living room or bedroom, even an office would be suitable. The fact that you can “swivel” 360 degrees makes it very functional for conversation areas of a space.”

DESIGN ASSISTANT PATTY ROBBINS

Favorite Item: Balustrade Table Lamp

SummerHouse Design Staff's favorites from the www.summerhousestyle.com web store

“This lamp is elegant, sophisticated, and transitional. It is gorgeous on its own and even more beautiful in a pair!”

DESIGNER KATY HINES

Favorite Item: Antique Oak Cabinet

SummerHouse Design Staff's favorites from the www.summerhousestyle.com web store

“I love the Antique Oak Cabinet because it’s a one-of-a-kind.  I would use this in my keeping/breakfast room to create an interesting and strong focal point in the space!”

WEB STORE MANAGER ANNA GOODSON

Favorite Items: Emory Sofa // Dior Couture Book // Tom Ford Book // Gazelle Horn Plaque // XXXL Cowdide Rug // Dean Chandelier // Quartz Cluster Votive Candle Holder // Phyllo Pillows

SummerHouse Design Staff's favorites from the www.summerhousestyle.com web store

“These are some of my favorite items on our web store, and I think the combination is a good representation of my personal style. The brown velvet sofa paired with the textured pillows would look great with my (always growing) vintage pillow collection, and the faux bois and gold combination of the chandelier would be an excellent addition to ANY home (but especially mine!). As you can tell by the gazelle horn mount, cow hide rug, and crystal votive, I like elements that have a somewhat natural feel. I love pairing things like the gazelle horn mount with softer elements, such as fresh flowers… Everywhere if possible! As a photographer, the Dior Couture and Tom Ford coffee table books are just no brainers! Throw all of this in a living room, add floor to ceiling windows, my vintage pillow collection, fresh flowers, and I might never leave.”

Fenwick Residence

26
NOVEMBER
2013

Designer Elizabeth Gullett recently completed a FABULOUS project that we wanted to share with you! We got Elizabeth to tell us a little about this beautiful kitchen and bathroom, and a little about her thought process, while working on the Fenwick Residence…

{ KITCHEN }

“This kitchen was designed for a young, hip, growing family. It needed to be modern and crisp, but still warm and approachable. The creamy white cabinets and wall color make one of my favorite combos: Benjamin Moore Moonlight White and Simply White. The touches of warm brass on the lighting and hardware give a touch of the past, but in a fresh new way. The dark walnut island adds a big shot of warmth and richness- without it, I think this kitchen would have felt cold and boring. Sunbrella slipcovers on the island barstools will hold up to lots of spaghetti- just bleach these babies!”

{ BATHROOM }

“This bathroom is one of my favorite parts of the house. A sculptural soaking tub makes a strong focal point immediately as you enter, grounded by the silk pendant overhead. The marble is everywhere- the floors, the walls, and then detailed on the shower floor and ceiling. Huge glass shower doors on each side keep it clean and open. The same Moonlight White and Simply White paint that was used in the kitchen is repeated here. The hardware color changed to polished nickel, giving a clean, crisp feeling. (Note: mixing metals in a house can be great- it gives depth and interest from room to room! I used soft satin brass, polished nickel, and bronzed iron in this house.)”

Mistletoe Marketplace Designer Bay

07
NOVEMBER
2013

Mistletoe Marketplace officially started today!

Last night was the Preview Gala, the event’s kick off party, which took place at the Mississippi Trademart in downtown Jackson. Several of our staff members attended (looking wonderful, everyone!) and they all said it was the fun-filled winter wonderland they’d hoped it would be! 😉

SummerHouse

This year we had the opportunity to do a Designer Bay, which always turns out to be a fun (yet challenging) project! This year, we went with a black and white color story, popping in some pretty fuschia! Our lovely photographer Anna got some great shots of the space! We love how it turned out!
