11 Holiday Entertaining Tips To Lessen Your Party-Planning Stress

SummerHouse's Top 11 Holiday Party Planning Tips // www.alwayssummerblog.com

It’s time to start thinking about holiday party planning! The less stressful a party is for you, the hostess, the more fun it will be for both you and your guests! The SummerHouse staff has rounded up some of our best party tips to share with you to hopefully lessen your holiday stress and increase your party-planning fun!

Executive Design Assistant Camille Parker: “I love to throw a quick party, and usually end up with equal parts store bought goodies and home made treats! A great trick is to always put the store bought things in a nice dish or piece of pottery/china, it completely transforms the dish and your guests are none the wiser!”

SummerHouse's Top 11 Holiday Party Planning Tips // www.alwayssummerblog.com

Interior Designer Elish Moon: “My best party tip is create balance in the budget, preparation, menu, etc.. I have a cake that I make every year specifically for Christmas. It is incredible but extremely time consuming. To make sure I enjoy the party prepping and don’t get overwhelmed, I break making this cake down into manageable stages. I make the layers about two weeks ahead of time and freeze them. Then the day before the party I make the filling and the icing and put the cake together. The day of I’ll garnish. This makes the process less daunting for me! Try applying this method to other areas. To lower the impact of a party to your budget start buying what you can ahead of time. This way everything doesn’t hit all at once. I try to remember- if hosting a holiday gathering gets too stressful because of things within my control, I’m defeating the whole purpose of the party! If buying ready made cookies and icing them yourself or not hand making place cards saves a step and helps you breathe a little easier it’s worth it! Not only for you, but for the people who are there to enjoy your company! Happy Holidays!”

SummerHouse's Top 11 Holiday Party Planning Tips // www.alwayssummerblog.com

Interior Design Assistant Anabel Webb: “Something that my mother and her friend group has always practiced (since I can remember) for literally EVERY dinner, get together, or party is that they will pull out the serving platters about a day ahead of time and then they’ll label what will go where, like “the McCarty will hold the Sausage Balls” and what not…I’ve started doing it ever since I’ve gotten married and my husband actually thinks it is the most organized, uptight, and brilliant idea he’s ever heard of.”

SummerHouse's Top 11 Holiday Party Planning Tips // www.alwayssummerblog.com

Interior Designer Katherine Shelton: “I personally do not host many holiday parties. However, I have attended many and know never to show up empty handed. I always bring a nice bottle of wine or a simple dish that everyone is sure to love!”

SummerHouse's Top 11 Holiday Party Planning Tips // www.alwayssummerblog.com

Interior Designer Lana Pate: “I always serve a signature cocktail but I also include a festive punch for non alcoholic guests and children. One of my favorite holiday cocktails is Milk Punch!”
SummerHouse's Top 11 Holiday Party Planning Tips // www.alwayssummerblog.com

Receptionist Della Turner: “Make sure you’re well stocked on bathroom must haves!! Have plenty of toilet paper, hand towels, and hand soap. And make sure you have a candle lit, or at least have some air freshener on hand!”

SummerHouse's Top 11 Holiday Party Planning Tips // www.alwayssummerblog.com

Social Media Director Laurel Donahoo: “I’ve learned over the years that the day of a party is not the time to try a new recipe. If you want to make something you’ve never made before, I recommend doing a practice round a week or so in advance, just so you can work out any kinks and perfect it in time for the party! That way, if it’s a total flop, you have time to figure out what went wrong or just make something completely different!”

SummerHouse's Top 11 Holiday Party Planning Tips // www.alwayssummerblog.com

Interior Design Assistant Krystle Short: “Be sure to appeal to all of your guests senses! Natural elements like rosemary sprigs and whole cranberries are always beautiful, especially when combined with nostalgic treats like ribbon candies or peppermint sticks!  When entertaining, I try to use cohesive scents from candles throughout the home (like this yummy Aerin candle).  Keep treats and snacks scattered throughout the space to prevent people from bunching up in just one.  When playing holiday tunes, go for artists that are easy on the ears like Nat King Cole or She and Him.  Low lighting from lamps and string lights are best as overhead can be too harsh.  As far as refreshments go, I highly recommend a big ol batch of Brandy Milk Punch!”

SummerHouse's Top 11 Holiday Party Planning Tips // www.alwayssummerblog.com

Interior Designer Lindsey Townsend: “It’s always nice to have a holiday candle burning for holiday parties.  If you are on a budget, trying using fresh greenery or flowers from your yard or somewhere near by.  Christmas tree farms will give away cuttings for free — they are great to use for a large table piece or around your mantel.”
SummerHouse's Top 11 Holiday Party Planning Tips // www.alwayssummerblog.com

Director of Operations Marty Smith: “Don’t fret over fancy fresh flowers. You have a huge source of fabulousness in your back yard,  around your neighborhood  or even off the side of the road. Clip from your tress, shrubs, and other plants in your yard.  You will be surprised at what an impact a big bunch of magnolia branches in your favorite container will make. You have guestS to tend to and food to make, no need to have flowers being an added stress. Sit back, get a good play list going, grab a cocktail and ENJOY.”

SummerHouse's Top 11 Holiday Party Planning Tips // www.alwayssummerblog.com

Interior Designer Laurie Conway: “I like to pull out my favorite crystal or silver serving pieces and place a cake or dressing into them, garnishing with rosemary and fruit. My secret is that it was all prepared by Mcdade’s but everyone thinks I prepared it all and will ask for my recipe!”

Easter Inspiration

Happy March!! This new month has really snuck up on us, even with the extra day in February (hey, leap year!), but we are so excited that spring is inching closer. We were just thinking about what March has in store for us and realized Easter will be here before we know it!

Our designers have some great tips about decorating for Easter so we decided to share a few with you!

Designer Katherine Shelton

This year when you go to decorate your table take three pots and paint them you favorite spring color such as robins egg blue, mint green or my favorite color this year Gray. Place them straight down the center of the table and plant white tulips in each. Around each pot place two to three eggs on each side unevenly. This year rather than dying your eggs boil them and leave them white. Then add a little gold or silver leaf to the white eggs.  Set the table with your favorite spring china or solid white china, silver and linen napkins and your done!  Will look so simple and amazing.  Happy Easter!

Designer Elish Phares Moon

My family never did decorate for Easter, but when I was younger decorating eggs was always a tradition. Now that I’m older I’d love to try some of the more mature designs that have been on Pinterest!

Thank you ladies! And of course we aren’t going to leave without great eye candy. Here is some Easter inspiration to kick off your day!

Decorating for a Cause

24
DECEMBER
2011

On Sunday, December 11th, Reunion (a neighborhood in Madison) hosted their annual Tour of Homes where people could buy tickets to view five beautiful homes all decorated for Christmas. This is something Reunion does each year to help raise money for various area charities chosen by the homeowners. We had the pleasure this year of helping one of our favorite families get their home ready for the tour. The charity this family chose to help was the Mississippi Children’s Museum. Take a look at their beautiful home, made even more beautiful with a little help from Marty and Melanie!

Lisa has helped this wonderful family with their home for years and years and has done a beautiful job, don’t you think?! The last two photos are of the most recently completed bedroom belonging to the family’s youngest daughter. It turned out so nicely!

*Thanks to our friend Rachel Kabukala for all of her gorgeous photographs!*

We hope you’re having a lovely holiday season so far! Can you believe tomorrow is Christmas Eve?!

Bar Exam {the fun kind!}

23
AUGUST
2011

Before you revert back to bad memories of law school, your husband being in law school, your friend being in law school, your sister being in law school…. Someone you know being in law school…. Let me explain! This is a FUN bar exam! We want to look over some great ideas for home bar setup, as well as what you need to have in your own home bar. Let’s start with some great examples of pretty bars, then we’ll move on to the grocery list!

What are some things we can learn from these photos?

1. It is good to have your home bar stocked with a variety of liquors and liqueurs.
2. Each of these beautiful bars has some interesting accessories closeby (like plants, books, heirloom looking pieces, and other unique finds.)
3.  An intersting piece of furniture or cart or tray add a lot to a bar setup.

What do I need to have in my own home bar?

After some research, we found that the home bar should include the following items:

Liquors:
mid to high end vodka
mid to high end whiskey or bourbon
mid to high end tequila
mid to high end rum (best to have a white and a dark)
mid to high end gin
a simple brandy

Liqueurs:
Bailey’s
Malibu Rum
Triple Sec or Cointreau

Mixers: Tonic Water, Sparkling water, Fruit juices, Both light and dark sodas, Tomato Juice

Garnishes: Lemon, Lime, Sugar or Simple Syrup, Salt, Mint, Ice, Olives, Cherries

Wines: Light bodied red, Full bodied red, Sweet white, and Dry white.

Other important items: Wine glasses, high ball glasses, cocktail napkins, stirring spoons/straws, corkscrew, and a little black book of cocktail recipes!

Have fun getting your own home bar ready for your next party!
We’d love to see pictures, so please feel free to submit some! 🙂

A Summer Soiree, SummerHouse style!

As many of you know, we love Rue Magazine. Everything they put in their magaizne is brilliant. It may not be our style, but brilliant, nonetheless. In the most recent issue, we were taken with the Sunset Soiree! Here’s our take on a similar party, with local resources so you can get all you need right here in the Jackson area! 🙂

Here’s the party that has us so inspired…

…And here are our picks as to where in the area you can get the goodies to make this party happen!

1. INVITATIONS AND PRINTED MATERIALS

May we recommend enlisting the services of Cultigraphic Creative, a graphic design group started by a couple of native Jacksonians. They can do whatever you want! Here is a sample of their creative handiwork:

2. FLOWERS AND TABLE DECOR

We have a lot of beautiful, whimsy votives that would be perfect to scatter amongst flowers on your table. These from Roost, for example, are an all-time favorite amongst the SummerHouse girls!

Roost knows best! 🙂

Speaking of flowers… We are in love with Tulip Floral, located in the Duling School building over in Fondren. Here’s a small sample of the amazing stuff that Lesley can do!

Tulip Floral

3. FOOD AND DRINK!

What is a Southern summer party without petit fours? We happen to love what Primo’s has to offer in the petit four arena. They do them up right!

Adorable, summery petit fours are a MUST!

Champagne is another necessity at a summer party. Enjoyed by itself, or mixed with a fruit juice, chilled champagne makes any fun party just a teeny bit MORE fun!  Calistoga Wine and Spirits, next door to SummerHouse, carries the Sophia Coppola one (complete with pink wrapper!)

Everyday Gourmet (also located just a couple of doors down from us!) has these beautiful, non-traditional Riedel champagne glasses available. How adorable are these?!

Riedel Champagne flutes available at Everyday Gourmet

Now that we have invitations, decor, food and drinks nailed down, there is just one thing left we’d like to suggest! That would be…

4. THE PERFECT DRESS

This little beauty comes from Anthropologie. And it is called the Junebug dress… This is perfect for any hostess to wear. It would flatter any body type and it totally fits the theme of the party!

How To Throw an Ice Cream Social

With it being our month birthday and all, we have had parties on the brain…  After thumbing through Rue Magazine (a million times…) we keep getting stuck on their adorable ice cream social idea! So we wanted to go with that, but with a little SummerHouse spin!

How to throw an Ice Cream Social:

1.  Make a guest list and decide on a date and location.  Be sure to give yourself enough time to get everything planned and invites sent out!  We love these fun invitations we found on etsy!  If you don’t have time to send inviations via snail mail, create a facebook event or e-vite invitation!

2.  Once invitations are sent out, start planning logistics!  You will need to get the following:  (1) decorations.  We will get to that later! (2) plenty of bowls (3) plenty of spoons (4) ice cream cones, should you risk the messiness of melting ice cream with nowhere to go (5) at least 3 flavors of ice cream.  May we suggest keeping the flavors simple so your toppings can really shine!  Also, it is a good idea to have one frozen yogurt for those watching their calorie intake (6) the best part: TOPPINGS!  Some of our favorites: dark chocolate chips… butterscotch chips… mini marshmallows… crushed candy bars… MnM’s… pecans… almonds… confetti sprinkles… crushed waffle cone… raspberries… kiwi… chopped strawberries… gummie bears… cake mix (yes, cake mix! mix in a couple of tablespoons into vanilla ice cream and BAM! you have cake batter ice cream)

The latte bowls from Anthropologie are PERFECT for an ice cream social!

3.  Decorate!  In order for your ice cream social to be photogenic, decorations are key.  When we think about ice cream socials, we think COLOR!  Have colorful bowls, fun tablecloths, funky napkins,  brightly colored banners, balloons, streamers…. the list goes on and on…

The Hollywood beverage napkins from Jonathan Adler have great colors and just the right amount of funk!

Another idea is to tell your guests to dress in bright colors.  We found this adorable dress over at Blithe and Vine that would be the perefct accent to any ice cream social! The color reminds us of orange sorbet… YUM!

From Blithe and Vine

4. Have fun and take lots of pictures!  You can’t plan a colorful event without properly documenting it! Be sure to get pictures of your setup, your adorable decor, and all of your friends! That will definitely be scrapbook-worthy.  Something to show your kids one day….

There are lots of different twists you could add to your own ice cream social.  We would love to hear your ideas! And if you throw an ice cream social anytime soon, you MUST take pictures and send them to us!  We want to see your creativity at work!  Now go have fun and eat lots of ice cream! 🙂
