Designer of the Week: Katy Sanders

SummerHouse Designer of the Week Katy Sanders Every few weeks, we pick a different designer to feature as our designer of the week! It’s so much fun for us to really focus in on one designer at a time and see what they’ve been working on, what’s caught their eye, and where they turn for inspiration!

Our newest designer of the week is Katy Sanders! This girl has been working extra hard lately and has pulled together some beautiful rooms! Find out about what’s most inspired her lately, her favorite recent project, and much more! Keep reading!

Tell us about a few of your favorite details in a project you’re currently working on!

My latest project involved a complete living room design for a home in the Bridgewater subdivision. Having downsized to one main living area, my clients needed a comfortable, casual, user-friendly space. I chose slipcovered pieces, warm wood tones, and natural fibers.

Here’s a look at the final selections. We cannot wait for the install this fall!

SummerHouse Designer of the Week Katy Sanders

What is your favorite design trend right now?

I am excited to finally see a shift from cooler tones back to natural, earthy palettes. Most recently, I have been drawn to designs that incorporate warm neutrals, jewel tone accents, matte finishes and mixed materials. My husband and I are building a home this fall, and I am looking forward to adding a few of these details myself!

Is there a publication, book, blog, website, or magazine that has just really inspired you lately? Tell us about it!

The fall issue of Milieu Magazine is absolutely stunning and so inspiring. Designer Betsy Brown’s home in Birmingham is featured. It is breathtaking, and her attention to detail is incredible. Some of the most beautiful designs can be found here in the south!

What’s your favorite room in a home to design? Why?

The master bedroom is one of my favorite spaces to design. While many clients overlook this area, I encourage people to make this a priority. I have heard countless times, “No one goes in there but us.” BUT, it is so important. It’s a personal space where you wind down and rejuvenate, and that is definitely worthy of some design attention! I love helping clients transform their bedrooms into relaxing, beautiful retreats.

Thank you, Katy, for sharing with us! You inspire all of us!

Have a GREAT week and thanks for dropping in today!

What Sets SummerHouse Apart?

What is SummerHouse?

SummerHouse is a beautiful place that acquired its name after owner Lisa Palmer spent a week vacationing in Florida’s renown 30A several years back. The vibes she got while on that sunny stretch of heaven on earth were the vibes she wanted to deliver to the clients of her growing interior design business. She loved the way their rental house for that summer week made her feel.

SummerHouse 🙂

Fast forward several years and not only is SummerHouse a business where Lisa Palmer makes clients happy, or a showroom that inspires its visitors with its unique mix of modern, classic, funky, and soft. It’s also a design family. SummerHouse has grown to employ seven interior designers, and that is what makes us unique! We are not just a store. We’re not just a design group. We are a design HOUSE! We sell directly off the floor. Our design services are free to those who purchase from us. Our designers are all trained designers with degrees in their field!

The SummerHouse Designers

SummerHouse is a powerhouse of talent! Our designers care. They love their work and it shows. They love detail. They value superior client service. They go the extra mile. They listen to those for whom they design.

SummerHouse is special. We’d love the opportunity to show you a SummerHouse experience. We will work within your budget to deliver maximum style and maximum satisfaction. And we look forward to doing so!

Come in and meet Lisa, Katy, Mary Courtney, Katie, Lindsey, Elish, and Katherine. Any of these talents will work their hardest to make you happy! We can’t wait to see you!

Designer of the Week: Elish Phares Moon

SummerHouse Interior Designer of the Week: Elish Phares Moon // www.alwayssummerblog.comWe’re beginning a new round of our always popular Designer of the Week series! Going first is Interior Designer Elish Phares Moon! We love having this girl as a part of our team and love hearing more about her favorite project to date, the item she longs to have in her house, and much more! Keep reading! 🙂
.
.

What is your favorite design trend right now and why?

My favorite design trend right now is actually designers who are using their expertise to explore designs a little off the beaten path. In a new generation of clients who are Pinterest, HGTV, and internet educated it’s sometimes difficult for interior designers to “wow” their clients. I love seeing designs that aren’t replicas of the most commonly pinned bathroom on Pinterest. I’m not pointing fingers- I’m definitely guilty of sometimes seeking inspiration online before wracking my own brain. But I’ve been really inspired lately not by perfectly replicated designs, but by the designers and clients who take a little liberty with trying out new things!

We know designers always have a little pile of samples of things that they hope to be able to use in their own homes one day… Tell us about one thing that’s in your current pile and why you love it or how you plan to use it!

I am very guilty of having a “happy” pile for my future home. Right now my favorite thing is the most unessential. I am completely in love with a jeweled Samuel & Sons trim. I stare at it longingly often and dream of ways to make it work. Of course, having a seasoned design eye, I chose something very costly. I’m just like my clients though- I need to be practical. I need a home that is inviting and that doesn’t have a warning sign at the door- “no one under the age of 5, though sippy cups are welcome”. I need practical! But that doesn’t mean I haven’t ruled out a gorgeous trim on future drapery. Your home has to make YOU happy first and foremost. And there’s nothing wrong with that.

SummerHouse Interior Designer of the Week: Elish Phares Moon // www.alwayssummerblog.com

What’s your favorite room in a home to design? Why?

My favorite room to design is a living room. It’s the heartbeat of the house (second only to the kitchen) where many memories are made. I like the challenge of creating a beautiful but functional space. That one room really needs to be the full package. It has to be visually appealing, functional, the hub for the house. I think a successful living room design is incredibly rewarding.

Tell us about your favorite project to date and what you love about that particular project!

My favorite project to date has been a roughly 14 month project in Oxford, MS. We just had our first install for the project last week and I’ve never had a more rewarding experience. It wasn’t the scale of the project (though large), the budget, or the location. It was an incredibly close relationship with a client equally dedicated to not sacrificing details in her home. The projects that I consistently walk away from feeling accomplished and gratified, are the ones that reflect an open and communicative relationship with my client. It shows in every detail: the cohesiveness of rooms, materials, etc.. We worked hard to be on the same page throughout and I think it shows. I feel very grateful for the opportunity to have learned so much and gained such experience… and to have a project I can walk away from proud I have my name on it.

Bedroom on a Budget

SummerHouse Interior Designer Mary Courtney Johns designing a bedroom on a budget // www.alwayssummerblog.comYou might have seen the post we did several weeks ago featuring designer Katie Carone and the living room she put together on a tighter budget! She did a beautiful job, so this time, we put designer Mary Courtney Johns to the test!

Mary Courtney has pulled together a drool-worthy bedroom that looks like it cost about three times what it actually totaled! This room is under $15,000!

Do keep in mind that this is ALL new furniture, so even if $15,000 doesn’t seem low to you, picking just a few new pieces for a certain room can really bring your existing pieces to life by only spending a fraction of this.

Our designers are experts in merging your existing furniture with perfectly selected new pieces to bring the utmost style to your space without breaking the bank!

We think Mary Courtney did a fantastic job of sourcing her specs from our more moderately priced (yet still very good quality) designer lines! Here’s her project!

Designing on a budget... A high end designer's take on a budget bedroom! // www.alwayssummerblog.com

Queen bed // $3530
Queen Coverlet // $455
Pair of Euro Shams // $130 each
Pair of faux fur accent pillows on bed // $210 each
Pair of Bedside Tables // $1370 each
Pair of Lamps // $345 each
8 x 10 Rug // $1865
Pair of Benches // $924 each
Artwork pair // $1500 each
 Room Total // $14,808
“I started this design off with a bed that would make a statement and followed with complimentary, budget friendly options that would only elevate the overall space. These selections, being that they are neutral and transitional, can easily be moved to a guest bedroom years down the road if the homeowner is wanting a change in their own bedroom. I love a portion of high contrast in interiors and used the intensity in the footstools and artwork to play up this feature. The paint color used is Benjamin Moore Intense White, which is an almost white with a tint warm gray; a wonderful backdrop for the deeper tones so they really stand out! It looks much more gray in the image above, but on a wall, it looks whiter!”

Getting The Most For Your Money

How to achieve high design on a low budget! Advice and selections by SummerHouse Interior Designer Katie Carone // www.alwayssummerblog.com

We gave our newest designer Katie Carone the task of putting together a living room with all new furniture but on a somewhat tight budget! She’s put this entire room together for under $15,000! Now keep in mind that this is ALL new furniture, so even if $15,000 doesn’t seem low to you, picking just a few new pieces for a certain room can really bring your existing pieces to life by only spending a fraction of this.

We love the beautiful living room she’s put together using our more well-priced designer lines! Here is more information on each piece!

Art // $1140

Cowhide Rug // $540

Grace Coffee Table // $2245

Callie Lamps // $685 each

Cole Drinking Table // $1085

Albion Sofa with three contrast pillows // $2431

Franco Chairs // $1716 each

Jolene Side Table // $855

Trudy Oval Side Table // $855

8 x 10 Sedona Sisal Rug // $390

Grand total // $14,343

Katie went with one of Lisa’s favorite design M.O.s that she calls “high/low.” This is where, even if most pieces in a space are budget conscious (or “low”), splurging on a couple of items (“high”) can really elevate the level of the entire design. Katie’s splurges were the lamps and the drinking table.

“The lamps are very transitional pieces and could be used throughout the house in several different places. On console tables, on bedside tables… So many places! And I love the acrylic base. It gives it an element of high design.”

“I aboslutely drool over that drinking table. Black and gold is my obsession! I know it’s more expensive, but when you find one piece you absolutely love, you just can’t compromise. It gives the room that wow factor!”

SummerHouse Interior Designer Katie Carone // www.alwayssummerblog.com
Katie Carone

“I love the idea of ordering a sofa that comes standard with contrast pillows like this one. You can order them in a different fabric and use them somewhere completely different, like on a guest bed or in some side chairs.”

“Revere Pewter is one of my absolute favorite paint colors– it would be really nice in this room. I love that you can use browns and grays with it!”

Decking A Dorm Room: Part III

Part III of Decking a Dorm Room is here! We are so excited to share more of designer Katherine Shelton’s secrets to make your dorm room the most fabulous in the dorm! Today we are focusing on how to organize elegantly. Here are some great tips to maximize your smaller space while still making your dorm room feel chic, organized, and just like home!

+ Raise your bed – Bunk beds are always a fun idea, however, we have found it to be more practical to raise both of the beds instead. By raising the beds, each roommate will have their own space and have plenty of room under it for storage.

+ Bed skirt – A custom bed skirt is vital if you raise your bed. Add velcro to the ledge of the bed and back of the fabric and the bed skirt will cover the storage under your bed and the fabric will add more style to your room!

+ Bar cart – Once the bed is raised, it will give you plenty of room for a dresser and other storage. We love the idea of adding a small bar cart under your bed with a coffee maker, mugs, and other coffee accessories. Your friends will thank you during study sessions and your wallet will thank you for not visiting the coffee shop before every test! This could also sit out from under your bed if you have the space of course!

+ Stool/Ottoman – Stools are perfect to place right next to your bed. It will serve many purposes: stepping stool to get onto the raised bed, a seat for guests, and storage. We recommend an ottoman that allows the cushion to come off.. this is great storage for scarves, snacks, the list goes on and on!

+ Stacked boxes and assorted bowls- We have a variety of fabulous boxes and bowls to store jewelry, office supplies, makeup or you can even add them to your bar cart for coffee, sugar, and tea bags!

Dorm Room Organizing // Always Summer Blog

+ Tray – Adding a tray (pictured above) is a great way to pull everything together as well as create a flat surface atop beds and ottomans to put drinks and food on. Andddd check out this fun tray we have… you can create your own bottom image and change it up as much as you’d like!!

+ Canisters – These are great to store bathroom products, your favorite candy, and many other nick-nacks that you don’t just want lying around.

Ten Tips for Decking a Dorm Room

It’s that time of year! High school seniors have decided what college they will attend in the fall, picked a roommate, and have their orientation date booked. The next step – finding out their dorm assignment!

Designing an eye-catching space is a must for girls in college these days. Unfortunately, it can be a daunting task. Not only is it a small space, but that space has to be shared with another girl. Luckily, there are TONS of tips and tricks to maximize the efficiency of a dorm room while bringing in decor that fits each girl’s personal style.

Today, we are kicking off Part I of Decking a Dorm Room! Did you know that we can help you design your/your daughter’s dorm? We sat down with SummerHouse designer Katherine Gatlin Shelton and asked her for ten of her best tips for designing a dorm room. Grab your notepad or hook up your printer.. You’ll want to keep these tips! Here is what she had to say…

  1. Custom Headboards.  Neutral linen or velvet fabric with nailhead or contrast cord.  It is smart to think resale when designing these headboards.

2. Four Drawer Bedside Chest. This needs to be tall and wide with enough storage to accommodate both girls.

3. Matching lamps to go on top of your chest.  Each girl will need her on light in her life!:)  Lamps can be colorful or neutral depending on the chest finish and overall room design.

4. Storage Ottomans for the end of each bed.  A girl can never have enough seating for company and this is a great way to accommodate guests as well as a clever place to store all of our infinity scarfs.

5. Fun Desk Chairs.  This is a great place to bring in Lucite, or lacquered finishes as well as a great pop of graphic fabric.

6. Modern Art is a great way for each girls to express herself and give the room a style of its own.

7. Upholstered bulletin boards for party pics.  Great way to bring all the room’s fabrics together to coordinate the space.

8. Bedding, and make it fabulous.  You must have lots of layers.  Euro, standard, bolster and lumbar pillows, coverlet, plush duvet, and skirt.

9. Drapery to soften your window and wall.

10. Don’t Forget Your Jewelry!!  Accessories are a must in our fashion and decor. Books stacked with a bowl on top.  Starburst mirrors, soft throws placed on the back of your chair, several sizes of boxes stacked on top of each other and just the right color and scale is most important.

The room pictured below is a great example of maximizing space, while creating a cozy ambiance that exudes personal style that is sure to make your girl feel right at home.
