Sefte Living

Today, we’re featuring a beautiful company that not only provides gorgeous products but has a deeper purpose of bettering the lives of the ones who make the products. We would like to introduce to you SEFTE LIVING, owned by sisters Sarah and Jennifer.

SummerHouse gets to know Sefte Living's founders Jenn and Sarah // www.alwayssummerblog.com

Jenn and Sarah were kind enough to take the time to answer a few questions we had for them:

Tell us about yourselves! We know you’re a pair of beautiful blonde twins that appear to be very close! Where do y’all live? What about families? What do you do on the weekends?

Jenn: We are bridged by the entire country! I am in the Bay Area (Marin County) and Sarah is in Tribeca, NYC. I have two little girls (2 and 4 years old). Sass has two boys (3 and 5 years old). We call each other’s children our ‘half-children’. I love Sarah’s boys as if they were my own!

Sass and I both try to connect with our families on the weekends.  I usually try to let my girls go wild in the woods in and around beautiful Mt. Tam. They wander and explore, fall down and get dirty. Growing up in Tahoe, I thoroughly believe in the combination of dirt and children being magical.  For Sass in NYC, a weekend is a far more cultural experience. When I was there a couple weeks ago, we took the boys to the Whitney Museum to see the Frank Stella exhibit. I thought it was a bit ambitious with two little guys under 5, but they loved it. There is a children’s art studio there that is spectacular. We spent an hour or so creating out own Frank Stella inspired masterpieces.

How long has Sefte Living been in existence? What inspired y’all to start this venture?

Jenn: The business was born in 2008. Sarah and I had always been wanderers (and wonderers) by nature and had been living and traveling abroad for several years. Marriage and children on separate coasts required that we reassess how we stay involved in the world and with each other. Through Sefte, we found a means to stay connected with each other and with our extended sisters in Peru and around the world. It also provided us a means to show the ancient and exquisite weaving traditions we’d found in our travels and showcase it as art.

Since we mainly sell your throws, let’s focus on those: Do you have a favorite throw in your collection, or do they all get equal love? Tell us what you love about your favorite(s).

Jenn: Indisputably, I would say that for both of us, the Paya Crocheted throw has a special place in our hearts. The Paya was the first design we completed with a cooperative of Peruvian women who literally crochet their way to financial independence. As they make each coin, they share their daily stories, gossip, laugh and cry together. This throw has true soul. There is a real human touch and a real human story in every one.

SummerHouse gets to know Sefte Living's founders Jenn and Sarah // www.alwayssummerblog.com

Are all of your throws produced in Peru?

Jenn: Yes, all of our knits are made in the High Andes of Peru.

What does Sefte mean?

Jenn: Sefte means ‘soft’ in old English. It was this soft lens that we use to look at everything when we design and collaborate: Soft, muted colors. Soft textures. Soft on the earth. Softness is calming and creates moments of reflection and connection. It invites people to get closer.

What sets Sefte apart from other businesses of a similar nature?

Jenn: Anyone (well, maybe not anyone!) can make a beautiful blanket, but how many blankets have a soul? A real human hand that makes them? It is the craftsmanship that sets us apart. Sefte throws, blankets and pillows are made by native Peruvian women – a place and people very close to our hearts. These remarkable women have worked with the alpaca fiber their entire lives and recognize the finest quality fibers simply by touch. They give life to our knit, crochet and weave designs, adding an element of personality and depth of experience that is irreplaceable.
And we repay them for their craftsmanship as best we can: Most of our artisan partners in Peru are single mothers from the highlands who, due to the insufficient social system, have to provide for their families all by themselves. Sefte offers them a safe, fair place to work, a path to financial independence, and a means to preserve their rich tradition.

SummerHouse gets to know Sefte Living's founders Jenn and Sarah // www.alwayssummerblog.com

Sarah: I think what distinguishes us from other companies is a desire to create and inspire a lifestyle and culture of “getting closer,” slowing down, connecting with those you love, making every morning  a Sunday morning.  Inspiration comes from a simple moment that imparts a feeling of peace and serenity. It’s the same feeling that slowly wraps around you when you take the time to relax, read, reflect and dream. It’s a purposefully idle Sunday morning in bed and a whisper in your ear from the person you love. This slower, more deliberate way of living is woven into every piece we design. It is what we want to translate to our customers.

We love a great wing chair. They work well as pairs flanking fireplaces or library tables, or as a foursomes in a chat group. They’re even great as individuals in the corner of a room with a little side table or a floor lamp!

We also love the wide variety of styles in which wing chairs come! Here are just a few that we have used in projects, had on our showroom floor, or have been eyeing for a while now just waiting on that perfect project to come along! 😉

The Staff’s Web Store Favorites

14
MARCH
2014

Have you visited our new web store yet? It’s up and running (and looking gorgeous!)

Next time you head to the online shop, be sure to keep an eye out for our staff’s favorite items! We got our designers and support staff to share a little about why they love certain pieces and even got some insight on how a few of them would style the items in their own homes! Let’s see what everybody picked!

DESIGNER LINDSEY TOWNSEND

Favorite Item: Modern Square End Table

SummerHouse Design Staff's favorites from the www.summerhousestyle.com web store

“I love an acrylic piece mixed into any space with antique or french style pieces.  I love the juxtaposition of both old and new.”

DISPLAY AND BUSINESS OFFICE MANAGER MARTY SMITH

Favorite Item: Gareth Sculpture

SummerHouse Design Staff's favorites from the www.summerhousestyle.com web store

“My favorite item is the Gareth Sculpture because I am a fan of anything with horns and anything with gold or brass! It is so right now!”

DESIGNER ELIZABETH GULLETT

Favorite Item: Henry Fireplace Tool Set
SummerHouse Design Staff's favorites from the www.summerhousestyle.com web store

“Some pieces are just a necessity in every home, and I’m always looking for those that can be beautiful AND functional. When the item is constantly on display, it’s even more important. What was once an eyesore can become another layer in your room. The edgy, beautiful modernity of these iron fire tools creates a piece of art…. Definitely a real winner!!”

DESIGNER CASEY JENKINS

Favorite Item: Tremont Chair

SummerHouse Design Staff's favorites from the www.summerhousestyle.com web store

“My absolute favorite thing on the web store would have to be the lovely Tremont Chair!
The gilded iron chair frame paired with a white linen tightly upholstered seat and back cushion is the perfect chair for almost any living, keeping, or bedroom setting! This chair upholstered in a white hide would be fabulous! I will admit, it’s not the most comfortable, but beauty is pain, and this chair is worth it!”

SOCIAL MEDIA DIRECTOR LAUREL DONAHOO

Favorite Item: Fawn Observation Print

SummerHouse Design Staff's favorites from the www.summerhousestyle.com web store

“My husband is a big deer hunter, and we both love art, so this print would be perfect in our home! Those colors and the style speak to me, and he would love the subject matter! I’m envisioning this hanging on one of the big walls in our breakfast room! It would be stunning!”

DESIGNER ELISH PHARES

Favorite Item: Gazelle Horn Plaque

SummerHouse Design Staff's favorites from the www.summerhousestyle.com web store

“I adore these Gazelle Horns! I actually already own them and have them hanging over my bed. They were my first ever Summerhouse purchase! I tend to go a little luxe, but love influences from nature. I have these hanging over my upholstered blue headboard with antique nailhead. The horns are flanked by b+w photos of my grandfather when he was in the navy. Captures my style perfectly.”

DESIGNER SUNNY HOLLIDAY

Favorite Item: Tampa Pewter Swivel Chair

SummerHouse Design Staff's favorites from the www.summerhousestyle.com web store

“There are several great components to why I love this chair! The leather is simply splendid, the comfort is beyond perfection & the style is captivating. Are you ready for the icing on the cake???…. It’s a swivel chair! Oh how I heart a swivel chair!! The great thing about it being a swivel chair is that it’s perfect for conversational areas. The perfect “home” for this chair would be in a keeping area, living room or bedroom, even an office would be suitable. The fact that you can “swivel” 360 degrees makes it very functional for conversation areas of a space.”

DESIGN ASSISTANT PATTY ROBBINS

Favorite Item: Balustrade Table Lamp

SummerHouse Design Staff's favorites from the www.summerhousestyle.com web store

“This lamp is elegant, sophisticated, and transitional. It is gorgeous on its own and even more beautiful in a pair!”

DESIGNER KATY HINES

Favorite Item: Antique Oak Cabinet

SummerHouse Design Staff's favorites from the www.summerhousestyle.com web store

“I love the Antique Oak Cabinet because it’s a one-of-a-kind.  I would use this in my keeping/breakfast room to create an interesting and strong focal point in the space!”

WEB STORE MANAGER ANNA GOODSON

Favorite Items: Emory Sofa // Dior Couture Book // Tom Ford Book // Gazelle Horn Plaque // XXXL Cowdide Rug // Dean Chandelier // Quartz Cluster Votive Candle Holder // Phyllo Pillows

SummerHouse Design Staff's favorites from the www.summerhousestyle.com web store

“These are some of my favorite items on our web store, and I think the combination is a good representation of my personal style. The brown velvet sofa paired with the textured pillows would look great with my (always growing) vintage pillow collection, and the faux bois and gold combination of the chandelier would be an excellent addition to ANY home (but especially mine!). As you can tell by the gazelle horn mount, cow hide rug, and crystal votive, I like elements that have a somewhat natural feel. I love pairing things like the gazelle horn mount with softer elements, such as fresh flowers… Everywhere if possible! As a photographer, the Dior Couture and Tom Ford coffee table books are just no brainers! Throw all of this in a living room, add floor to ceiling windows, my vintage pillow collection, fresh flowers, and I might never leave.”

Go ahead and start picking out what YOUR favorite item in the web store is because choosing one just might win you a SummerHouse prize pack! Details coming next week… Get excited!

And have a GREAT weekend!

Today we have a beautiful project by designer Casey Jenkins to show you! This Master Bedroom turned out exactly how Casey and her clients wanted it, which is always the best outcome! We’ll let Casey tell you a little more about the project!

Bedroom by designer Casey Jenkins // SummerHouse

“The clients started off needing a desk for their office. They were very particular about color finishes and function for their everyday use. Then focus shifted to completing the Living Room.

When I proposed the Living Room, they were so inspired that we decided to complete other rooms as well! This is where we decided to do the Master Bedroom, which is always my favorite room to design! In a Master Bedroom, it is easy to lock down purpose for furniture pieces as well as comfort for the client.”

Master Bedroom by Interior Designer Casey Jenkins | SummerHouse

“These two young clients loved the color palette that was presented to them, and we got started right away! It may be hard to capture by photograph, but the back wall is lined with a Schumacher ivory and matte gold Greek key design. The drapery fabric has an embroidered linen abstract vertical design providing movement and color. The bed was custom made by a local artisan with a light cream linen insert.

We went with all custom pillows and went between slight variations of fabric colors ranging from ivory to light and charcoal blue. The Moore Council Washed Oak Chests are fabulous with a secret door at the top!”

Master Bedroom by Interior Designer Casey Jenkins | SummerHouse

“My favorite wall in this room houses 9 Lauren LaChance botanicals. They bring such a warmth to the space and sense of nature into this serene room! The small slip-covered Lee chairs allow for a small reading area with custom Hodsoll McKenzie embroidered pillows.”

Master Bedroom by Interior Designer Casey Jenkins | SummerHouse

“I so enjoy working with these clients that allow me to present to them what I believe is best for them in their everyday environment. The home’s interior now feels so clean and inviting, just the way we wanted it!”

SummerHouse in the Sunshine State

Elizabeth Gullett

SummerHouse designer Elizabeth Gullett recently finished a project in Santa Rosa, Florida that we are all in love with! See what Elizabeth has to say about the challenges that the project presented and how she overcame those challenges. And check out these gorgeous photos!

I must say that this Santa Rosa Beach, Florida carriage house has been one of my most favorite projects yet. Not only was the location divine -with its ocean views, private pool and private beach access- but the client and I shared a unity of vision that made this project go incredibly smoothly! Right off the bat, Kay and I knew we were going to work great together. She’s as enthusiastic as I am, and there was so much to be excited about!

BEACH HOUSE BY ELIZABETH GULLETT // SUMMERHOUSE

The Challenge: 1) To create a relaxing environment that was livable, fresh, and interesting, while easily accommodating guests ranging from grand-kids to business associates. One of the main issues we had to consider was the fact that this would be where Kay’s kids and grandkids stayed when they came to visit. So everything needed to be super durable, easy to clean, and all around super family friendly, with as much sleeping room as possible. 2) The carriage house needed to have a “chic” element about it as well, because (very fortunate) business associates and clients would be staying here occasionally. 3) The furnishings should direct attention outside toward the amazing views, and not steal it from them. 4) The carriage house should also flow smoothly from the main house (they are attached), and yet stand on it’s own two design feet.

The Solution: 1) This was accomplished with heavy duty fabric on a sleeper sofa, cleanable slipcovers on the chairs, and a darker wool rug downstairs. Wool is naturally stain-resistant, and the darker color makes it even more kid-friendly. The bar stools are made of a heavy-duty grey washed rattan – just wipe them clean!  2) A variety of carefully mixed finishes and washes brings an eclectic, yet sophisticated flair to the different case pieces in the house. The accessories-from classic, thick coffee table books to white coral on acrylic bases-add another layer of chic. The furniture is more rustic, while the accessories are more classic and elegant. 3) Furniture was arranged with each spectacular view as the focal point; every seat gets a good sightline to the ocean! 4)  I chose a palette of crisp white, soothing greens and fresh blues- a classic beach palette, done in a slightly unexpected, dressier way. The blue was pulled from the main house, bringing a sense of cohesiveness.

“Not only was the location divine -with its ocean views, private pool and private beach access- but the client and I shared a unity of vision that made this project go incredibly smoothly!”

“A variety of carefully mixed finishes and washes brings an eclectic, yet sophisticated flair to the different case pieces in the house.”

The words we both kept using to describe the feeling we wanted for the house was “Non-beachy, beachy.” Sounds silly, but it fit. Clean, relaxed, sophisticated, and fresh, but with no wicker or “coastal” furniture to be found anywhere…a “different” type of beach house. Kay pretty much gave me free rein in the fabric and furnishing selection, and after the initial presentation didn’t change a thing. It was so affirming that she not only loved, but trusted, the entire vision!

Like I said, one of my most favorite projects yet. 🙂

GREAT JOB, ELIZABETH!

Lines We Love: Serena and Lily

Serena and Lily, a line that started out solely with bedding, began in 2003 with creative minds Serena Dugan and Lily Kanter.  Serena had a background in fabrics, Lily a background in baby-focused retail.  After they collaborated and launched their initial baby/child bedding line, they saw such great success that they decided to branch into “grown up” bedding.  The next step was furniture and accessories!  They continually evolve and add, keeping things interesting for those of us who follow their every move.  Here are just a few of the things these ladies have created.  Hopefully it will be easy for you to see why we love Serena and Lily so!
