Space Transformed

SummerHouse Interior Designer Lisa Palmer took a completely empty home and turned it into a cozy, masculine bachelor pad // www.alwayssummerblog.com

There is a brand new magazine out in Mississippi called VERVE, and one of Lisa’s projects landed on the cover of the current issue! Having one of our designers’ projects featured is always such an honor, especially when it winds up on the cover of the publication!

This space was designed by our leading lady Lisa Palmer. It was a complete and total transformation, as this client started with an entirely blank slate. “The first time I went to this client’s house, he had one rug and four or five pieces of furniture. That was it!”

Lisa took his empty house and made it a rich, cozy, masculine home. Neither Lisa nor her client could have been more pleased with the result!

Our Favorite Soft Blue Paint Colors

It’s time for another round of paint color favorites! With the arrival of Spring, beach trip plans in the works, and warmer weather settling in, we can’t help but be inspired by soft shades of blue! We asked our staff what their favorite blues were, and we got a great response!

Interior Designer Lindsey Townsend’s pick is Sleigh Bells by Benjamin Moore

Interior Designer Katherine Shelton likes Iceberg by Benjamin Moore. “This is a great go-to for a pale blue paint color. It looks good in a master bedroom, nursery, or bathroom. In fact, you could really use it anywhere in your home.”

Interior Designer Elish Moon’s pick is Benjamin Moore’s Arctic Gray. “If I’m ever unsure of a color I haven’t used before, choosing a “color” with a gray undertone is usually a safe bet. It helps ground a color and creates a more soothing tone. Benjamin Moore’s Arctic Gray is a beautiful soft blue with just a hint of gray.”

So there you have it! Our favorite soft blues! Have you ever used any of these?

Do keep in mind that paint colors can be a little difficult if you aren’t trained in picking them out. So many factors determine how a color ends up working on a wall, so if you are ever in doubt, it’s always a good idea to hire a designer to help you. Making a small investment into design time on the front end can save time, headache, and definitely money on the back end!

Our designers would love to help you select the perfect paint colors for your space. Give us a call today!

Paint Color FAQs

SummerHouse's most frequently requested paint colors // www.alwayssummerblog.com

Let’s talk about paint colors, shall we?

We decided a blog post all about our most asked about paint colors was in order! 😉 Without further adieu…

A Few Moments With Artist Carol Sneed

We recently got the opportunity to chat with local artist Carol Sneed about her work, her family, her inspirations, and how she got into art in the first place! Keep reading to find out more about this talented woman whose work we could not adore any more!

Original Oil on Canvas Art by Carol Sneed // www.alwayssummerblog.comCan you tell us a little about yourself? Where you’re from, about your family, how you like to spend a lazy weekend

I am from Canton, MS. I met my husband, Bill, at Ole Miss, and we married after his first year of Medical School. After my graduation from The University of MS with a Bachelor of Arts degree, and later earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree at The University of Houston in design, I practiced Interior Design in Jackson, MS.

We have one daughter, Katherine, who is married to Hunter Worley, and they live in Birmingham, AL.

On a lazy weekend, believe it or not, I like to get some painting in. It is therapy- sometimes, that is! I also like to read & practice sketching. If I am in the mountains where the summer weather is cool, I like to hike or bike.

How long have you been painting, and what got you into painting?

Well, my mother’s favorite piece from the fourth grade, a crayon & watercolor, entitled “Cotton Picking” still adorns her walls. My teacher entered it in an art contest and it won first place.

Original Oil on Canvas Art by Carol Sneed // www.alwayssummerblog.comI have been designing and painting a good deal of my life. At Ole Miss, I took art electives for fun. After Ole Miss graduation, I studied painting from a local instructor for fun. My fine Arts degree included every form of art. After retiring from Interior Design, I knew I had to focus my artistic energy in some direction, and painting was a natural creative outlet. I began sketching and painting seriously in 1999.

How do you describe your style?

That is a hard question! It may not have a name. ha! My goal, however, is to take what is complex and paint it simply. When painting abstractly and experimenting with different color combinations, I try to keep the composition fresh, spontaneous, and appearing effortless.

What do you most enjoy about creating art?

I love an eclectic mix. I enjoy creating art that is very much at home with antiques as well as contemporary pieces. I am always keeping “art for interior design” in mind, and I paint the types of pieces that I searched for to place in client’s spaces.

Original Oil on Canvas Art by Carol Sneed // www.alwayssummerblog.comWhat would you say inspires you most as an artist?

I love the inspiration I receive through travel- to drink it all in. There is nothing like being there to capture the essence of the place. My city scenes and Aspen landscapes are drawn as much from memory as through photo references and sketches. Matisse, CĂ©zanne, Bonnard, and Monet are just a few of my current influences.

I am especially fascinated by nature as a whole, the most awesome masterpiece of all, created by the only perfect artist.

What else do we need to know about you?!

Every day is a gift, and I am thankful for the opportunity to do something I enjoy- and hopefully bring pleasure to other people.

Inside The Orange Box: Nontraditional Neutrals, Part 2

31
JULY
2015

You might remember seeing from our last Orange Box post about nontraditional neutrals! Today, more of our designers are getting in on the discussion! Let’s see what they have to say!

DESIGNER LINDSEY TOWNSEND

One of my favorite non-traditional neutrals is dark slate blue-greys. I love how it can really ground a space while also balancing well with many other color schemes.  It can be used within a traditional design palette or contemporary.  It is a very versatile non-traditional neutral!

SummerHouse designers' favorite nontraditional neutrals // www.alwayssummerblog.com

DESIGNER CAMILLE HOLLAND

My favorite non-traditional neutral is black, it is usually thought of as an accent to white or grey neutrals, but it is amazing standing on its own as the main color in a space! It pairs great with all colors and can make any room stand out as a show stopper or can tone down a space for subtle elegance!

DESIGNER KATY HINES

I have really been drawn to blush tones lately!  When paired with creams and ivory, it creates a soft, sophisticated palette.  And it is a beautiful accent to darker neutrals like charcoal and taupe.  Here are a few blush accents you can find in our showroom now!

Inside The Orange Box: Nontraditional Neutrals, Part 1

17
JULY
2015

In this edition of Inside The Orange Box, we’re getting our designers to share their favorite non-traditional neutrals! As much as we all love a good white, gray, or beige, we asked them to think a little beyond that. Their answers are great! Let’s get started!

DESIGNER MARY COURTNEY JOHNS

A deep teal with a bluish-gray undertone would be my first choice for a non-traditional neutral. It adds interesting contrast to any lacking space. I have this color accenting my living and bedroom!

SummerHouse designers' favorite nontraditional neutrals // www.alwayssummerblog.com

SummerHouse designers' favorite nontraditional neutrals // www.alwayssummerblog.com

DESIGNER ELISH PHARES

I have many, especially as trends fluctuate, but one of my favorite non-traditional neutrals is olive green. It translates as a neutral and is a beautiful compliment to so many bold colors that often need a balancing force. Olive green pairs well with gold/amber, blush, eggplant, navy, soft blue, etc…

SummerHouse designers' favorite nontraditional neutrals // www.alwayssummerblog.com

SummerHouse designers' favorite nontraditional neutrals // www.alwayssummerblog.com

DESIGNER TODD PRINCE

I choose amethyst as my non-traditional neutral because it works so well with so many colors that I personally love, like light or dark gray, olive green, or white. Amethyst is one of those colors that has a gray undertone to it, but it’s so so so flexible. It works particularly well with green!

Master Bedroom Masterpiece

08
SEPTEMBER
2014

SummerHouse Interior Designer Elish Phares takes us inside the master bedroom of one of her clients to remind us of just how beautiful simple design can be! We love the tight color palette, clean lines, and all of the natural light! Elish tells us a little bit about what all went into this design!

Shades of Blue // Master Bedroom by Interior Designer Elish Phares // www.alwaysssummerblog.com

What did your client say she wanted in this room and what were you working with?

For this room, we pretty much had a fresh start in there! The only thing we worked with was her bed, which she had already purchased from SummerHouse. I got to start basically from scratch in there. We selected paint colors together, which is when I learned that her favorite color in any shape or form is blue. So I knew I needed to include several shades of blue! I had already redone her living room, and her master is right off of her living, so I wanted it to be different but I wanted it to still flow off of her living.

Shades of Blue // Master Bedroom by Interior Designer Elish Phares // www.alwaysssummerblog.com

Shades of Blue // Master Bedroom by Interior Designer Elish Phares // www.alwaysssummerblog.com

She wanted it to be calm and soothing. I think she and her husband really like to read, so we made a little reading nook for her over in the corner. A big debate for them was whether or not they wanted to keep a TV in the bedroom, but we eventually decided not to, so we ended up with a lot of room for book storage. They can also use their night stands for storage!

Tell us more about working with this client!

She is great to work with! I knew the design would have to involve blue because that’s her favorite. She likes pretty things, but we have to be somewhat practical- we couldn’t do anything too crazy- because her dogs get on everything. Her dogs sleep on the foot of the bed so the bedding, except for the shams and decorative pillow, is washable.

Shades of Blue // Master Bedroom by Interior Designer Elish Phares // www.alwaysssummerblog.com

We were trying to create a balance between the bed she already had, which is actually kind of green, and that blue. So that was kinda where the color palette came from. And she’s not overly girly. So that’s why the lamps are a little bit rustic. She’s kind of drawn to reclaimed things sometimes! It ended up being a really nice mix.

How long have you and this client been working together?

We have been working together for about a year now! She’s made several house updates throughout my time working with her. She’s updated finishes, redone her kitchen, redone her floors, painted
. So we are kind of doing interiors as we are going through some of her home updates.

Thanks Elish! So soothing and relaxing… Keep up the good work! 🙂

A Favorite Of Ours

19
JUNE
2014

Marty recently revamped the showroom floor, and this grouping (which you may remember seeing a similar version of in this blog post!) is just one of our favorites! It’s so pretty and colorful without being too much, and we love the color, pattern, and fun new art! Most of these furniture pieces are by Suzanne Kasler for Hickory Chair!
