In this edition of Inside The Orange Box, our designers are talking about powder rooms! Specifically, how to make the biggest impact in the smallest room of the house! Our question to them was, “If you could only change one thing in a powder room, what would you change that makes the biggest impact?”
Here’s what they had to say!
INTERIOR DESIGNER KATY SANDERS
The walls! Whether it is a dark, saturated paint color or a fun wallcovering, this is the best way to make a big impact in a small space!
Lighting makes a huge impact in such a small space. There is a fine balance between there being too much and too little. Having sconces as well as a chandelier allow for plenty of direct light on your face while looking in the mirror as well as illumination for the overall room. This also makes the room feel more substantial and open. Choose some standout fixtures to increase the impact factor!
So this may not be the simplest answer, but it depends on what state the bathroom is in. If you have decent cabinetry and stone already, try a new paint color or wallcovering. If the countertop is an eyesore, invest in some beautiful stone. (Some powder bathrooms might be small enough to score a deal on a stone remnant!) Another easy update is new lighting! Get creative and evaluate your priorities.
Picking a dramatic new paint color or wallcovering is always the quickest and easiest change that can make such a huge difference in a powder room, assuming no major updates or remodels need to occur. Second to this would be updating the fixtures and/or lighting.
Have you seen the latest issue of Portico Jackson? We recently had a media room featured!! And it is perfect! Chic, family friendly, and functional. Does it get any better? Look at this beautiful space by Lisa and former SH Designer Todd Price (who just moved to Cali! We miss you Todd!!)
Isn’t this the coziest room?! The perfect place to hang out with family watching movies and playing games! Great job, Lisa and Todd. We know these clients are super happy, which is ultimately what it’s all about! 🙂
We have a few new groupings on the showroom floor that are simply breathtaking! Beautiful color mixed with perfect neutrals… Lovely accessories, unique art, one of a kind pieces… Here are a few snaps of the newest vignettes!

We are a part of something over on Instagram that we are really excited about called Rafl Jxn!
In a nutshell, several great local Jackson area businesses (us included!) have each given Rafl gift cards to our shops. Each month, a huge pool of gift cards (think $1500 at the very least) will be given away to wonderful local folks like YOU! Or your mom! Or your husband! All of you can enter!
All you have to do is follow rafljxn and follow the other businesses participating (which are the businesses that rafljxn follows – including us!)
Once you’re following all of those accounts, you just have to comment on entry posts to be entered to win. (Entry posts look something like this!) The more entry posts you comment on, the better your chances of winning are! Each participating business will post one entry post per week. So it is definitely helpful to turn on notifications for each participating business so you can be sure to not miss a single entry post!
Rafl explains it fully on their How It Works page, so check here for the full explanation!
We plan to post our next entry post some time today so keep an eye out! 😉 And GOOD LUCK!
We love a great swivel chair around here! Adding a swivel to a chair just makes it more fun. Plain and simple! It also makes it more functional in many circumstances! Nurseries, chat groups, keeping rooms, near fire places… The list goes on and on!
Many of the swivel chairs we have access to can also rock, and some even have returns on them, meaning if you spin it, it goes right back to the correct facing position after you get up! Here are a few of our favorite swivel chairs, ranging from more modern to more traditional! Swivel chairs can fit into almost anyone’s aesthetic!
For more info on any of these, just ask one of our designers! We’d love to answer any questions we can about these great swivels!
Thanks so much for stopping by today. We love having you follow along with us here! Have a great second half of the week!

Watching the space come together was very rewarding, as are all installations! Here’s a little start-to-finish for you!
Camille, Marty, and Lisa did a fabulous job of getting things together, and the help provided by ADAC was wonderful!
Here are a few more shots. WE LOVE!
This pretty girl’s name ended up being Sassafras, and she absolutely STOLE THE SHOW! She was captured by photographer Karen Sachar, whom you can find out more about here!

Beautiful work, Lisa! Every detail is perfection. And this, folks, is why she’s our design leader! 🙂
We have a brand new artist here at SummerHouse whose art we are just crazy about! Our wonderful clients seem to be just as wild about it as we are because this work sure has garnered LOTS of attention!
Meet Lynn Sanders. This pretty lady sure can create some beautiful work! Get to know her just a little bit better!
Tell us a little about yourself! Where you’re from, about your family, etc…
I grew up in Lafayette, LA but after college, and living in various other states for work, my husband and I settled in Alexandria, Louisiana, where we have lived for the past fourteen years. We have a sixteen year old son, two cats and two dogs.
How long have you been painting? What got you into painting?
I was always your typical creative person growing up; taking art lessons and being in charge of school dance decorations. Prior to my art career I did management and marketing/special events for shopping centers. So there was a history of creativity. Finally, about ten years ago my cousin inspired me to start painting again. She is also an artist and lives in Memphis. I began by creating paintings for children’s rooms which morphed into painting abstractly. Six years ago I quit my day job and have never looked back.
How do you describe your style? It’s so beautiful, whimsy, and unique!! We love it!
I am an abstract expressionist so my style is free flowing. I do not get bogged down in the minute details of painting, but look at the big picture. Although the pieces take a while to complete I think they all reflect my impatience. The acrylic medium and tool I paint with really are reflective of my impatient nature. Although the pieces may take a while to complete my painting process is fast. I would love to paint small but my process just does not lend itself to small formats. Painting large is my real passion.
We have a great selection of your abstract pieces in our showroom. Is this your primary style, or do you have other styles/mediums you use that we don’t show here at SummerHouse?
I am always trying new processes and I feel my strokes and compositions have evolved over the past ten years. So you never know I may have a new style on the horizon. Lately I have incorporated linen textures to my canvases and this is something I am currently experimenting with. In the past, I have painted koi fish and birds. They are very specific to me and I do not paint the koi fish much anymore (painted them from 2006 – 2012). I have done birds since 2012 when I retired the koi. I think there are seven or eight bird paintings hanging in homes across the South. I do a couple of them a year. It’s good to step away from the abstracts for a bit.
What is the most exciting design project you’ve ever gotten to be a part of?!
Gosh, the best part of my job is going in so many wonderful homes!!! However, my most exciting project was being asked to do Charley G’s restaurant in Lafayette. The restaurant was being remodeled and they wanted a more contemporary feel and used my art to convey that idea. So all the artwork in the restaurant is mine. That’s pretty cool.
What would you say inspires your work most?
My mood, music, and my love for beautiful things are the biggest influences on my paintings. Whether it is a beautiful horizon or a lovely home, those are the things that inspire me to create. It is so humbling to see my work in the context of a beautiful room that has been artfully designed, either by the owner or interior designer. I have always had a passion for decorating so my work goes hand in hand with that.
What else do we need to know about you?!
I spent a month last summer living in an art colony on Nantucket Island. I have many funny stories from that experience. I had a wonderful time and hope to do it again in the future. Besides that, I love the beach, animals, tennis, novels by Jane Austen and the South!

Many thanks to Lynn for allowing us to get to know her a little bit better! Stop by the showroom or check out our online shop to see more of Lynn’s work! It’s safe to say that we’re obsessed with her beautiful colors and style! 🙂
Many thanks to Inspiration Mississippi for sharing this beautiful space designed by our owner and lead designer Lisa Palmer! We love this living room (and the clients for whom it was designed!) and are thrilled to get to share it with you! Head on over to the Inspiration Mississippi blog to see more of what Lisa has to say about designing this cozy space…
As many of you know, Lisa has been selected to participate in the Rathbuns’ Watch List Event, which is part of the Atlanta Food and Wine Festival! She has been paired with chef John Lasater of Nashville’s Hattie B’s restaurant and together they are working on an incredible modern southern experience!
We asked Lisa about being paired with Chef Lasater and she emphasized the influence the South has had on both her design aesthetic and his culinary style. She is hoping that the fusion of his and her modern southern styles in two different areas of art, so to speak, “will make people feel relaxed but intrigued.”
We love the selections Lisa has made so far for their space. The colors, the one of a kind pieces… This is going to be so good! Here’s a sneak peek at the rendering and some of the design elements!
Isn’t that chartreuse divine?! We are in love.
We’ll have more photos from the actual space once the event has taken place! Can’t wait to show you… Stay tuned!
Commercial spaces sometimes have a tendency to look very… well… Commercial! But when done correctly, it IS possible to take a blah space and turn it into something fantastic!
SummerHouse interior designer Todd Prince (who just left us to move back to California! We miss you already, Todd!) did an amazing job of taking the office of one of our favorite clients and turning it into a warm, inviting, and functional space! Take a peek!
We love the mid-century accents, that big fiddle leaf fig, and the beautiful black and white photography mixed with dark, stained pieces! We could definitely get used to having an office like that! 😉
Thank you so much for stopping by today. We hope your week is off to a great start!
